Saw this app in the Desire HD forum. It basically shuts down your data connection after a predetermined time set by you after the phone goes to standby.
The premium version has extra features like setting it to reconnect after a certain amount of time while in standby to allow your phone to push email etc...
I used the free app today and it works very well. The data returns quickly after coming out of standby. At my job I have terrible data coverage and it would drain my battery considerably. Today with this app I made it through a day of work without having to charge and I have over 50% left after about 12 or 13 hrs of of being off charge. It's a good app. Give it a try.
Oh, I know juice defender does this, but this app is simpler and I like simpler.

Nice. I need this. Might be worth buying
rooted?
Do you have to be rooted to get this app? I did not see it in the Market?
Sent from HTC Inspire 4G.
I don't think it requires root but I know for a fact it's in the Market. There is no space between "timeout" and "3G". If you type Timeout3g you should find it
I installed it but does not seem to be turning my data off. I'm using the free edition. I set it to 5 minutes and hit save and apply. Does the data icon actually go away when its off ?
Edit: Never mind, I'm an idiot lol I got out working perfect. Awesome app. Should help a lot with battery life on the inspire nice find.

Hi folks,
I'm new to these forums and also a new smartphone user! Wanted to find out some info on which settings I should turn off to improve battery performance. Thanks!
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
A new phone probably doesn't need battery conditioning but you can start by disabling widgets that you don't need, a lot of them pull data which sucks battery. You can also disable auto brightness and then lower the brightness of the display.
Sent from my Inspire 4G or Desire HD or whatever this thing is called via XDA app.
juice defender is a good battery saver app
I'd day the number one thing you can do is lower the screen brightness (as stated above). Constantly (automatically) adjusting the brightness is a substantial drain. I have mine set to 30, and the only time it is too dark is outside when sunny, and you can use a toggle widget to turn up the brightness when you are outside. So far I'm getting a full day of use, which is all I could ask for.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I turned off all of the att bloatware that was running on the background, as well as adjust the settings on the gps satellites and that seemed to improve the battery performance too. I did adjust the screen brightness down to 25% which is just enough for me to still enjoy the display.

SCREEBL!!!

Here are some things you can try:
Turn off Auto Sync.
Turn off GPS unless you actually use it.
Turn off WiFi if you aren't using it.
If you're willing to pay for apps, get SetCPU and make some profiles for things like screen off, etc.
Don't install any task killers. FroYo's own task management is better for both performance and battery life.
Setcpu requires root
I wanted to see how far I can increase battery uptime by just tweaking the settings. Thanks for the comments, really does help.

How to root the Inspire
Rooted Stock ROM
Wanted to report progress. In ny first charge it inky lasted 10 hours, having everything on ( gps, auto-sync, always-on mobile data, ATT crapware).
After turning all of those off, my phone is still at 70% battery life after almost 12 hours of mild use.
I'm a happy camper!

I turned off background data and my battery life is fantastic. It's pretty good if you're on WiFi most of the time as well. With all data services syncing on the network my battery was a bit rough.

Smartphone Batterlife
Any modern smartphone should last a full day of moderate use without having to manually manage any of the radios or default syncing. I found my Inspire had pretty decent battery life after I installed Launcher Pro and set it as the default launcher. I am convinced that Sense UI launcher and widgets are the killer of batteries on these phones.
for better battery life, read through this thread.
Hi all.
Looking for some serious help. Coming from a Samsung vibrant. I need help with how to save battery life on the sensation. I have been off charger for 5 hours and 51 minutes and am down to 41%. Is this normal? I have been only texting really. I got my data from battery monitor.
Thanks in advance. Anyway to make this better?
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA Premium App
It all depends on what you're using the phone for. I'm at 55% after 12 hours. yesterday I got 17 hours. if all you're doing us texting then no,thats not normal. but I suspect you're probably doing more with it than you realize since its a new toy.

He prolly has running wifi as well?
Settings > Wireless and networks > Wifi settings > [MENU BUTTON] > Advanced > Wifi sleep policy > After 15 minutes
Stop Android from phoning home and you'll save greatly on battery life.
Best way I've found to prevent battery drain, is to stop Android from phoning home.
Once you use an app like Autostarts to stop unnecessary things from starting up all the time on their own and also block a couple ports that are not always needed via an app like DroidWall, you'll see great battery life. Also see other details in that link of things I turned off to increase battery life amoung other benefits.
For now, I can only speak for seeing the difference while using a Nexus One ROM on my HD2, but I have way better battery life, GPS lock times and faster device boot ups than ever before.
This is yet another one of the reasons I must wait till the Sensation is rooted and unlocked. Because I'm not using it while it's running things I can't better manage, so they don't drain my battery.

How did u get that much? I have battery monitor as a widget. I also did not charge the phone all the way up when I first got it.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Well to be honest for the 8 hours I'm at work, I use it light. texting, a few calls and about 30 minutes of reading pulse and playing games. However the next 8-9 hours I would consider moderate to heavy use. I have no monitors or anything running, just running straight out of the box.
I'm at 34% after 14.5 hours today.
I charged it fully the first day, ran it to 0, then charged it fully again last night.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
Did draining it out help? It is really killing my battery. When my phone idles it loses about 7 percent an hour. Is this normal?
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA Premium App
Mine is at most 3% per hour so I would say check if you have any running apps that aren't supposed to be.
I suppose draining could have helped but I have no way of knowing for sure
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
Yeah I killed my battery in 12 hours with decent use and then charged to 88 had to go but now down to 35 three hours later ....thinking of draining battery and then charging

I think custom kernel can improve battery a lot..Wait
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA App
I think mine's even worse. Phone was off charger at 100% at 11am, by 1:30PM it's already down to 80%ish. By 4PM it was down to 40%ish, got it charged up to about 70%ish around 6PM, by midnight I was around 6% again.
So I think I'm losing around 10%/hr. That's gotta be abnormal, and the battery gets really hot too. At the moment, I have several speculations:
1. Death grip causing the phone to work harder to find signal, and tmo's coverage kinda sucks in my town
2. I have defective unit/battery
3. Some apps behind the scene are killing it. But I've checked what's running behind, even turned off unnecessary stuff using autorun manager. Auto sync is turned of only for gmails. Weather, IMAP mails, pulse, facebook etc are set to pull in couple hrs instead hourly. The battery life cannot be worse than my 2-yr old HD2.
Hey guys. Have you considered bump charging. HTC advised the idea for the HTC desire battery and it in most cases doubles the battery.
Sorry I can't be more specific bit I'm on my phone. I have found the relevant link. Read the 1st post. I'm gonna do it when I get in from my gig.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=712990
Bump charging kills the battery in long run.
If you have to do it to a brand new handset it can't be good news.
HTC shipping crapy product again!
Customers should not have to put up with this crap and be the beta tester!

I'd suggest uninstalling battery monitor. I had installed it on my g2x and immediately saw my battery percentage drajning more quickly. Probably because its always running in the background.
The best tip I can give for better battery life is to minimize what you allow to run in the background. Get rid of any task killers, set Facebook/Twitter/Email/etc to sync less frequently, turn off wifi if you're not using it so its not scanning for networks, and so on.
Also install juice defender from the Market. Its free. It has greatly increased my battery life.

I installed the Plus version because it allows wifi control. I just use the default settings except I change so it doesn't disable wifi. I do that because I use wifi calling at home so I dont want Juice Defender turning off my wifi. I always turn it off manually when I leave the house anyway.

Yea Balanced Settings is good if you don't mind it managing your wifi too. In the Plus version I selected Customize instead of Balanced. The only thing I changed was the wifi setting. There's a ton more settings to configure but the default ones work fine for me and I don't have the patience to sift through them all anyway lol

Hi...
I don't know whether it's just my Sensation problem or any 1 problem in Standby mode.. I noticed that the battery drop 4 to 5% /hour even I disable of Data connection....
How can i do to improve that battery backup or it will somehow come with the next update??
Thanks..
I'm using Juice defender it is designed to increase standby time by monitoring and schedule data connection when the screen is off.
To get the best saving, you need to play around witch settings in the advanced profile which require you to buy the Ultimate version of the app.
I've been using it for over a year on all my devices (apart from the xoom). Its one of my must have apps.
P.S. Give the free version try, if it works you can buy paid version to unlock more features.

I think just disabling mobile network will save battery. Over night which is around 8 hours my batter percentage doesn't go down at all
I tried juice defender free version already but seemed not so successful just only x1.16 battery improvement..

Apparently, the new FW fixes the issues - reviews have said 1.34.401.1 has a much better battery life. Hoping Vodafone roll it out soon as I've got my Sensation arriving 2moro (I'd have got SIM-free but I won it so not complaining!!)
Yes.. let's hope it'll improve on the new FW...

I used to use Juice Defender, but switched to Green Power Free. It seems to handle my data switching better than Juice Defender. Just my .02¢
Why am i getting different results during the day&night ? Both having Wifi-gps turned off. During the night it is 3mA, during the day around 100-200mA.
Is it worth it?
I use the free version and swear by it. I have exceptional battery life when using Juice defender. I have gone 16/17 hours before without needing to charge with moderate phone use. The only difference between the free and the charge version is that on the pay version you can create your own profiles. I just use the standard profile and it is awesome. Download the free version and give it a try.
Totally worth it.

thanks, I'll ive t a try. I read some palces it does mroe harm than good
How does turning the data off, then turning it on every 15 minutes do more harm than good?
I use it if I'm in a 4G area or really trying to stretch the battery out. It does work wonders!
I use the free version and notice the gains. usually see about a twenty percent gain
Absolutely, although I have a strange issue with the service getting killed since I got the G2x, still love the app though. I have UltimateJuice btw
i bought the ultimate version and i never know how to do the settings so i ended up giving up on it.. and just manually turn wifi off and 2g on when i stop using the phone >_>

I installed the free version and it unstablized my phone. There are some Wifi apps that will turn off your wifi, when you leave your home automatically. Search WOOFI in marketplace. Or Auto Wifi Enabler.
Ya I had issues with reboots and instability while using the free version, it would also cause GPS to shut off and I would need a reboot to get it back. Just as easy to toggle it my self.

I uninstalled also. I was having issues receiving POP email in a timely manner. I had it set to check every half hour but sometimes four or five hours would go by then a ton of emails would flood in. I am going to spring for the next step up because you have more control over individual apps and how they connect. I will post back with results.
for those saying it works wonders are you saying this as someone who keeps wifi and gps on all the time? wifi crunches the battery so if all this does is periodically turn it on and off it's not going to do much for me. i only turn it on when i need it.
I've used Juice Defender beta with Ultimate for a long time and was wondering with ICS if it is still really relevant. Anyone have any thoughts?

Do you really feel you need juice defender with this phone?
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
Absolutely. I have had great results with it enabled versus not. I obsess about battery life.
There are articles online stating they use more battery than they save. But really is 12+ hours without charging and screen on for 4-6 really that bad?
Sent from my HTC One XL using xda premium
Over longer periods of time, yes Juice defender will save you battery. Shorter periods, the difference is negligible.
Also, the articles about battery savers not saving battery only referred to some that were poorly coded and implemented. I do not believe Juice Defender was on the list.

Just turn off mobile data if you know you're not going to use it for a while and you're basically accomplishing the same thing. No need for an app to run in the background to do it for you. I used to use JD back in the OG EVO days and yeah it helped, but with this phone it is definitely NOT needed. We are way past that point now.

Yes, it isn't about the phone or the OS, it's about the apps. The key feature of Juice Defender IMO is the ability to put limits on what apps can use data and when. Rather than having your radios fire up every time an app wants something, you're able to exercise some control.
That's what I was thinking as well. Was thrown off as someone had posted an easter egg finding by using quick shortcuts to open the "Power Savings Settings" menu on the HOXL. So it made me think that the Rom itself had the features like turning Wifi off when not in use baked in. I'm using Juice Defender and just took my time configuring apps and it seems to be doing it's job well. x's 1.73 at the moment. Thanks for the feedback
id suggest letting your OS manage your battery ive tried it all and always had issues. i get 13.5 hours of use with 39% battery life remaining. this was with moderate use though the day. checking txts and calls with some internet fun too. I am also on WCX roms
