[Q] Rooting NS from phone? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So i just got a NS, . Was trying to root it and put CM7 on it yesterday, but my computer doesnt like SDK for some reason. Long story short, is there any way to just root the phone and install CWM or Unlock bootloader from the phone? I know its possible on other phones like the MT3GS.

[Q] why not release rooted phones?

Hey all!
I want to ask a question, might be dumb but i just don't seem to get it.
Why doesn't htc release android phones rooted? I read somewhere that the g1 (i think, maybe it was some other model) was for sale fully rooted (a separate developer version) and that the nexus one is also rooted (or am i mistaken? ) I am thinking of getting an htc desire, but am afraid of bricking it while rooting, and if nexus one is unlocked i would gladly buy that, but it is not for sale in my country on contract.
and also, is it safe to try and root? i mean ofcourse there is the risk of it bricking, but i mean is there a possibility to fix the phone after a brick? (sorry, total noob about android phones, coming from using windows mobile for 3 years )
You can't brick it just by rooting it... well, you can temporarily brick it. To put it (extremely) simply, all rooting does is manipulate the files that have been flashed onto your phone to give you root access. If you really screw up, a hard reset will replace all of those files with the stock ones.
It's the flashing to a different ROM that can potentially brick a phone. If you're worried at all about bricking, go for root but don't flash to a custom ROM.
I'm typing this from my rooted Desire
Get one, go to www unrevoked com and you're 2-3 VERY simple steps away from having a rooted Desire, don't need any techie skills or anything. It's just as easy to "un-root" it in case you're worried about your warranty
I just ordered a Motorola Defy, it looks like it takes a bit more effort to root that one, but nothing too scary
thanks for that link, will be of much use to me once i get my desire

Quick Rooting Question

Hey Guys,
I just unlocked my phone via unlock code. Now im planning on rooting it via SuperOneClick 1.9.1 method. So the question here is simple.. Can i root it and will the unlock stay intact even after doing?.. the reason this question came is My G2, i heard that when we root, the unlock goes away(if it is unlocked prior to rooting by code). Thanks in advance..
PS. the whole reason for rooting is the wifi dns problem im having .. and im on AT&T sim with data disabled!!!
Rooting shouldn't...Doing a system wipe to install a custom rom will. Don't quote me on that though. That's what has happened to my phones in the past.
Good to know.. But if i end up flashing a custom rom and the unlock goes away.. then i can simply re enter my unlock code that i have right?.. (i.e. if im asked on rebooting after installing it) owise im assuming it would work just fine..

[Q] How to root without wiping?

Im looking to root but without wiping my One S and I cant seem to get it. Towel Root doesn't work and neither does framaroot. Toolkit programs to do it via PC end up requiring bootloader unlock which will wipe the phone, but I simply just want to root. Htc QuickRoot tool says my phone is patched so that much im aware of. Im just wondering if any other methods have been introduced to help with this. Thanks.
I've been wondering the same thing, I don't have a pc so my options are none right now

Resurrecting the SM-T217A now that it has a working root.

Ok, finally after all this time, the AT&T branded Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 (SM-T217A) can be properly rooted. I have been playing with it since that moment my binaries were finally updated properly. However, several questions remain since i am still learning this stuff.
First, since root it installed, i want to flash a custom recovery, but the problem is that the bootloader is locked, that being the issue that had it unrootable for so long. So a) is there a method using terminal emulator to unlock the bootloader so i can flash a recovery of my choosing or b) is there a way to flash the recovery that bypasses the bootloader.
Second, AT&T decided to make the genius move of also locking the Tab 3's (7.0 variant anyways) native phone and dialer app. The Tab 3 is able to function as a phone, but AT&T really made a mess by locking up, and over bloating the hell out of this device.
Third. I want to install the XFramework, but read that there can be issues with that and locked bootloaders. Help please, i really don't want to shoot brick my tablet. There are more questions, so ill just add to this thread later if anyone else can help me fix these issues
How did you root it ? Do you have instructions ? Also looking for answer to boot loader myself.
Thanks
Steve

Root?

Is there a way to root without a computer? If not what is the easiest root method? I used to root phones all the time but recently I have been getting the newest phones so there's no devolpment (and it was Samsung lol). I have a work computer but it's pretty locked down on what I can and can't download. Thanks in advance!
AFAIK, you can't root without a computer.
Download whatever you need on your phone, tools and stuff, get to that work computer and copy all of it there, root the phone and delete afterwards.
