[Q] Dungeon Defenders - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I’m curious as to what kind of performance other people are getting in Dungeon Defenders on your stock Nexus S? I have had the game for more then a month now and it runs great up until certain points in battle with the influx of multiple waves and towers blasting away. The game doesn’t become unplayable but it does get a little choppy until all the mobs are cleared out. I would think this as being the norm for such a graphic intense game but I see people saying how great this game runs on their phone (droid, evo, galaxy s whatever). I’m trying to gauge what “runs great” means for others that have the game and if my Nexus S is underperforming for some reason. I have tried all the tips for getting better performance out of the game but it doesn’t seem to help much. Is this what everyone experiences for this game on your Nexus S?

What rom are you using?
I noticed on Stock 2.3.2 the gpu seamed to perform the best in smartbench, cm mod always scored lower.
Stock 2.3.3 also scores lower and the latest nightly cm 11 build is scoring like 1600 in smartbench for gpu appose to stock 2.3.2 which scored 3000....
I think it may just have something to do with newer video drivers being used though which smartbench is misreading.
I actually think the hummingbird is just as capable for gaming as the Nvidia cpu the only difference is this game and others to come are being optimized for Nvidia, nvidia is possibly even paying for this the way they do on PC.

Electopia Benchmark

For giggles, can one of you that's stock run the Electopia benchmark? There's been some interesting results and it would be cool to see how another dual-core phone with a different CPU/GPU performs. The Sensation folks are obviously not amused.

Even the Desire HD blew away my G2x on this benchmark but it could be the custom ROM... I'll switch back to AOSP and try it again.
16FPS
Can't be right, my Thunderbolt smoked my g2x
26 FPS Thunderbolt vs 16FPS G2x
Something is very wrong with those numbers if this is supposed to be measuring opengl 2.0
I have stock and with a really hard time getting it to respond to touch input and with the sound off here are the scores:
Average FPS - 15.56
Time - 60.04
Number of Frames - 934
Trianglecount - 48928
Peak Trianglecount - 68838
This was a super buggy program on the G2x. I think it is definitely not optimized for dual core or at least the Tegra 2 architecture.

There's no way the G2X would be lower than the Sensation. The test probably isn't dual-core optimized and the new CPU/GPUs are throwing it off. Thanks for trying though.

And there is no way the g2x could be lower than a single core adreno 205 Thunderbolt.
15.57 FPS for me running stock/not rooted. Like previously mentioned, it was very unresponsive to touch.

The sad part is that this isn't just a benchmark - its a game first and foremost.
And yeah I can't get past 16FPS on stock speed OR at 1.5GHz so I think there's definitely coding issues as Nenamark using Trinity on Bionic scores 72FPS. I think my Inspire (Adreno 205) got about 35?
+1
Lets all buy phones with top benchmarks!!!!!!
Better yet lets all get iPhones.....

But if you really stop and think about it, if each of the different CPU/GPU's behave differently running the same software because of proprietary hardware performance tweaks we'll all be screwed in the long run. No matter how Electopia was written, one would think it would behave the same way on different CPU/GPU combinations - even if it wasn't dual-core optimized. So developers are either going to have to start testing on every CPU/GPU combo to release a single version of an app or release different apps for different CPU/GPUs. It's way too early to tell as dual-core and 2.3ish isn't that common now but it should be interesting watching software performance and development play out in the future.

Its piss-poor coding on the app developer's part - plain and simple. While there are Tegra 2-specific instructions that an app developer can use in their application, there are not any mobile OpenGL 2.0 instructions the Tegra 2 doesn't support as far as I am aware.
If you want a good challenge for the chip, download an3dbench XL from Market. I just scored 32640 and that's with a bunch of background apps.
Isn't this a windows mobile port (had it on my HD2 running WM6.5)? So, how does it provide an accurate representation of gaming on an Android device? Since it is the only bench my G2x has scored poorly on and (more importantly) real world gaming is spectacular on this thing, I'm going to say it doesn't. I wouldn't put a whole lot of stock in this one...
Yeah agreed. I just ran it on the Nexus/CM7 AOSP hybrid and it still was only 16.06 while I got almost 40,000 on an3dbenchXL which put me like 30-something out of 7000ish results.
This application was influenced by Qualcomm specifically to run poorly on Tegra 2 devices. They messed with the shaders so everything is rendered at a weird angle. If you change the code to run with a normal approach, you see the same results on Qualcomm chips but also 3-5x perf on NVIDIA chips
why would you say this benchmark was influenced? if you have the sources ..please share .. so we can all look ... and how can you say BenchXL is a good benchmark? I have run BenchXL Benchmark and seen un matching results on many forums ... it is very unreliable... not a good benchmark. At least electopia gives consistent reliable results... I would go with electopia as a GPU benchmark ..
i have a xperia play for myself - which performs superb for gaming - awesome graphics - i love the games on it - awesome device. my wife has g2x - which is equally good for gaming (thought she just uses it for texting - LOL )....
i think for gaming both xperia play and g2x are good...
I'd hardly say it's biased to any one specific manufacturer based on these benchmarks:
More so I ran it myself with the latest firmware at stock frequencies (SGS2 btw ) and got:
Average FPS: 51.44
Time: 60.02
Number of frames: 3087
Trianglecount: 48827
Peak trianglecount: 68868
Quite funny difference to any other device I might say.
It's not biased towards any manufacturer, it is biased against NVIDIA's ULP GeForce GPUs in Tegra 2 SOCs.
Changes to the code cause increases in performance on Tegra 2 devices, while results on other platforms do not change.
In general, there is never a single, all-encompassing GPU benchmark to accurately compare devices. It all depends on the code, and how it interacts with the specific hardware of the device.

That AnandTech review is badly outdated, like I said; the SGS2 gets for example 16fps there in February. I myself get 58fps today.
And I don't think it's biased against Tegra. Tegra performs pretty much there where it should be considering its age, and corresponds to it's specs.
And just to prove dismiss your point that Tegra gets a different codepath, I ran Electopia Bench again via Chainfire3D using the NVIDIA GL wrapper plugin emulating said device and I'm still getting the same amount of FPS.
If what you're saying is that it's not utilizing Tegra's full potential through proprietary Nvidia OpenGL extensions, might as well pack the bag and leave because then that logic would apply to pretty much every graphics core since it's not optimized for it. What we see here in these benchmarks is a plain simple ES 2.0 codepath which all devices should support and so we can do an oranges to oranges comparision. It's also one of the heaviest fragment-shader dependent benchmarks out there for the moment, and less geometry and texture bound, and that's why it runs so badly on pretty much every chip, since they don't get this type of workload in other benchmarks. This is also why the Mali gets such high FPS as that's where the quad GPU setup in the Exynos can shine.

It's clearly MALI 400 in SGS2 is most powerful GPU right now. There is a 60fps limit on Galaxy S2, so you'll need a powerful benchmark. You can also see that in Nenamark2 too. SGS2=47fps, G2X=28fps, SGS=24fps

How well do high end games play on your Charge?

I was thinking of buying N.O.V.A. 2, Order and Chaos, and maybe one of those 3-d racing games I'm just not sure how well the Charge can run higher end games, I'm running 1.8.5 Gcharged with Voodoo and the ability to OC(although I haven't yet). Anyone care to comment on the smoothness at which any of these games run(if you've bought any).
Modern Combat 2 runs as well as it possibly can.
Just tested N.O.V.A. and it's perfect! Seems just as smooth as playing on my PSP. Running Humble with Voodoo enabled, not overclocked(1ghz) and actually considering underclocking if it doesn't hurt the gaming performance, gotta save battery life any way I can!
N.O.V.A 2 runs really smooth for me on stock ROM. Also you should try out Samurai Vengeance 2, great game.
Sent from my Charge Stock EE4
SV2 is a pretty fun game! Thanks for the tip, also glad that N.O.V.A. 2 is working, planning on buying that once I beat N.O.V.A.
It's pretty funny, an underclocked Droid Charge runs even the top spec requirement games just as smooth as a phone like the Galaxy SII with its dual core 1.2ghz and 1gb of RAM. haha.
Any game that's out right now on Android should run very well since the Charge's GPU is still pretty high-end and that matters more than having a current-gen dual-core processor. Tegra 2's graphics capabilities aren't really that extraordinary in comparison.
Tegra 3, on the other hand, is a big step up (5x faster than Tegra 2), and at that point we may see games the Charge can't run (well)... but that's not due until the 2nd half of this year.

Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 GPU

Im new to XDA so please read this post
The galaxy tab 3 7.0 is released. Its specs are 1.2GHz Dual Core processor,7inch 1024 by 600 screen TFT,GPU is Vivante GC1000 and its running 4.1 Jelly Bean.Camera are 3.15 MP rear camera and 1.3 MP front camera and it does NOT have flash. It records at 720p.Now the GPU is fairly unknown considering the market is flooded by adreno and PowerVR GPUs.Here are some details of the GPU.
About Vivante GPU Products
Optimized for Google Android apps, Vivante's product portfolio includes performance-leading technologies in 2D/3D GPU, CPC Composition Processors, GPGPU, and vector graphics. Vivante cores leverage a unified driver architecture that is compatible with industry-standard application programming interfaces like OpenGL(R) ES 3.0, desktop OpenGL(R), OpenCL(R), OpenVG(R), Microsoft(R) DirectX(R) 11, WebGL, Google Renderscript / FilterScript, Compute, and other standard APIs. With Vivante technology, mobile devices deliver stunning, high resolution user interface graphics as well as to photos, games, business applications and more.
Robust features built into the GPU cores include:
-- World's Smallest Licensable GPU Core for OpenGL ES 3.0
-- Single/Dual/Quad/Eight GPU Configurations
-- Single Software Stack
-- Battery Optimization
-- Memory Efficiency
-- Support for Heterogeneous Platform Architecture
And some Benchmarks are added. They are compared to the tab 2 7.0.
The latest Galaxy slate comes with GPU Vivante GC 1000, which as the benchmark results confirm, is twice as capable as the PowerVR SGX540 found in the Galaxy Tab 2.So while the CPU performance is probably unchanged, besides the clock difference of 200 MHz, graphics power has seen quite some boost in the latest generation of the Samsung affordable slate.
According to the benchmark results, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 is powered by a Marvell PXA986 chipset with 1.2 GHz dual-core Cortex A9 processor. The SoC is not the most impressive in the market, but is still a significant upgrade when compared to the one powering the Galaxy Tab 2.Benchmark results are given on attachments.
And please hit thanks.
Odd thing i noticed the gpu in the tab 3 7" it preforms much better than my galaxy s3 adreno 205. cpu in the s3 crushes the tab though
How is your tabs handling gaming? Mine doesn't show much promise.
Into the Dead - runs fast but has stuttering issues when striding to the left or right
Heroes O&C - laggy as hell, almost unplayable (might be due to our connection though)
Turbo Racing League - lagging at some parts of the game
Minion Rush - Before reinstalling, it was a total nightmare, totally unplayable ( <10 fps). After reinstalling, the game runs much better now yet far from perfect due to frequent hiccups (lags, freezes, etc.)
SG: DeadZone - Lagging, but not as much as Heroes O&C
Plague Inc. - Game slows down (fps) as the game progresses
However, other games run fine such as:
Dead Trigger - love the smoothness of this game. Runs perfect.
2Fuse - perfect, too.
Frontline Commando: D-Day - runs ok.
Am I the only one experiencing these problems?

I donno i do notice some lag on some things but i attribute most of that to the slow cpu then again my way of telling was running quadrant on my tab the fps on all the demos is double what my gs3 gets. And samsung fixes the scores they get as best they can.

yes if you see that mali 400 is paired with good CPUs.but vivante doesnt get that good of a cpu.it all matters on the cpu.the cpu calculates how many FPS can it pull and the GPU just tries to pull it.if the cpu cannot calculate high FPS whats the point of a good GPU?

Hi everyone, i've the galaxy tab 3 inch 7 (3g), i'm very suprised for the performance. I can run modern combat 4 in high quality in 55fps - 60 fps.
Dead trigger 2 and 1 run very fast.
gc vivante 1000 is better than mali 400,because gc vivante 1000 is a dual gpu and he support opengl ES 3.0 (in galaxy tab 3 the extension it's didn't present because the version of OS is jelly bean 4.1.2, and opengl ES 3.0 run only android 4.3+) but don't worry, galaxy tab 3 in all version will receive the kitkat, and i've tested very games (brothers in arms 2,the walking dead and etc),i'm very happy but this gpu suport only extension tegra (high quality in games). Mali 400 is very powerfull but it doesn't suport opengl ES 3.0.
i have the comparison powervr sgx 540 vs gc vivante 1000.

Fujitsu Arrowsx F02E Superp phone

I bought Fujitsu Arrowsx F02E phone last week. Great Japan phone for low price. It works great(Fingerprint sensor exelent and also HUMAN CENTRIC ENGINE). But,
1. When I turn on GPS using 3G network it restarting again and again(GPS work fine with Wifi)
2. Antutu benchmark shows lower score for processor and GPU (Compared with HTC one X(Both has Nvidia tegra 3)) HTC one x has 1.5quad but this phone has 1.7quad . So, why lower score?
3. Asphault 7 not working also(Game opened its Menu is slow and game not started).
Please help me ASAP.
And Can someone please tell me where Can I find custom rom for this?

I'm thinking of buying one of these for gaming, how's the gaming performance on it? I know demons score thd made my asus tf700t work hard.
Demon's Score THD Japanese Ver is preloaded on the phone (albeit a trial version). It runs good, some frame drops here and there.
Asphalt 7 works fine for me on my F-02E. Also gameplay is rather smooth offscreen at 1080p.
Asphalt 8 works good too, but some occasional frame drops on complex maps.
Shadowgun and DeadTrigger both plays buttery smooth.
Epic Citadel Unreal 3 Benchmark, the F-02E at 1080p on Best Quality setting gets around 30fps - 40fps (Tegra 3 works better on 720p screens, and again lack of optimization from Fujitsu on the software side)
GBA, SNES, PS1, N64 emulator all work great on the phone (after r00t and delete some bloatwarez)
2D games (Fruit Ninja, Doodle Jump, Stupid Test, Jetpack Joyride etc) works flawless in HD.
3D gaming performance of the Tegra 3+ on this F-02E is aroung 1.7x-1.8x slower than the Adreno 320 GPU on my F-06E and my Galaxy S4- i337m

Anyone use the Drastic Emulator on this phone?

Only reason I am not pulling the trigger yet. I heard that the GPU is pretty mediocre compared to the Snapdragon SoC. Anyone play any games using the DS emulator? How does it run?

Plays fine on my honor! Only played the pokemon games. I also run with high quality textures.
I can't tell much difference from the s7 minus the resolution
man i play with drastic on my Honor 4x (mediocre gpu, cpu 1.2ghz x 8) and drastic runs smooth as hell, i cant even imagine how it would run on a honor 8 lol
It runs FFIV and Mario Kart at 100% speed for me. FFIV is kind of my benchmark game as the intro seems to be one of the most demanding DS games.
