Is there any news as to when (or if) Google will update the Nexus S to allow for 1080p? Is it a hardware limitation?
1080p what?
Video output, video recorder
If regarding the camera, nope - hardware limitation.

I'm an idiot, sorry. I was thinking the iPhone 4 did 1080p recording which was why I was asking but it only does 720p which the Nexus S does seem to do now.

Nexus S does not do 720p (1280*720 res). Nexus S does 480p (720*480 res).

yes it's smooth but why would you want to play 1080p videos on a phone?
Can't be smooth at 1080p, only GS2 can, at the moment
Owning a GS2 also I have tried lots of 1080 and 720 and really on such a small screen you really can't tell much difference in quality.
you can't notice difference between 480p to 720p and 1080p on the phone
Of course the screen on our phone is 480p (800x480) so any higher is a bit useless

Did you try it yourself? Cause I did, Big Buck Bunny 1080p and Avatar 1080p trailer both run smooth as silk. There are video's on Youtube showing the O3D playing high profile 4.1 720p mkv and 1080p mkv which is pretty impressive in my opinion. Haven't tried playing 1080p mkv myself yet but will today.
The GS2 is an incredible phone but not the only one that can do incredible things anymore.
yes...we are all referring 1080p IN FLASH CONTENT,SO DURING THE NAVIGATION WITH THE BROWSER...Not with a dedicated player...

Largo79 asked "@ik911 Are you able to play Youtube 1080p vidz smoothly?" to which ik911 replied he could and then you said only GS2 should be able to. Now I could be wrong and you didn't directly reply to ik911 but I got the impression you did so I just told you Youtube 1080p content does play smooth on my O3D.
NO NEED TO SHOUT LIKE AN IDIOT over something like that...
you are an idiot instead..

Right, you clearly have no idea what I was replying to so I'm not gonna bother having this discussion with you.
I have no trouble playing embedded video, playing more than two at a time like in that review does make the players choppy which could be a Froyo vs. Gingerbread issue or just a raw power issue but who would play multiple embedded video's anyway on such a small screen (or any screen for that matter)?
Someone asked whats the point of playing 1080p on a small screen? Well when u have ur phone connected to an HDTV then it comes in handy being able to play 1080p or 720p videos

A ROM can't do hardware changes (inb4 Nexus One 720p). It's a hardware limitation.
Please use search, there are many threads about this discussion in the past.
Yea, the Nexus One 720p is just upscaled anyway.
can you help me
prolly need an hd screen for that.
Then why is there a 720p YouTube app then I been using on my infuse

Don't agree, the pixel resolution may be higher than our screen resolution, but the bitrate is also higher.
720p HD-Youtube makes a huge noticeable difference on the infuse
Just grab http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1529715 (build 3.5.5)
I just seen that the nexus 7 got a mod that makes the front facing camera able to record in 720p.... My only question is. Does our nexus s 4g have the capabilities of the same thing???

on the Nexus7 it is a simple property file tweak - on the other hand I don't think that either camera on the Nexus S is capable of 720p recording
No. Neither the front facing nor the back camera can record 720p video. Hardware limitation.

Thanks
Vikesh

then I have made changes in media_profiles.xml file.
Code:
<EncoderProfile quality="1080p" fileFormat="mp4" duration="30">
<Video codec="h264"
bitRate="12000000"
width="1920"
height="1080"
frameRate="30" />
<Audio codec="aac"
bitRate="96000"
sampleRate="48000"
channels="1" />
</EncoderProfile>
But stuck in bootloop. anybody can give suggestion..??
I googled it and there are sensors like OV5690 which is a 5mp sensor capable of video recording 1080p at 30 fps
http://www.google.co.in/search?client=chrome-mobile&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8&q=OV5690
Maybe its to do with the support of the sensor?

Ok then. I found that as venketraman said that Galaxy Nexus can capture the Full HD video from 5MP camera bt at 24Fps. Means if possible then our can. I think sensor can play a role in it but not 100%. let see changing it again with 24FPS.
Edit: I did changes in Media xml file but camera FC after selecting camcoder record button. Here is the logcat & Media_profile.xml file which I have changed.
Please lookinto it if possible.
If the sensor or CPU or both are not capable of Recording FullHD video, we cant!
We can't even play 1080p Video, let alone capture it!

buddy that right that we can't play it but what if we can able to capture & then play also..?
If other device are capable of then why not ours.?
May be... need to study the camera sensor.. but remember we don't have source for camera... so it will be difficult....

I have already tried it. Patched the camera firmware. Will try again with some other ideas. Actually the lack of NEON instructions is a problem, will see.

I may not have enough knowledge about coding but as far as i have seen, not all mobiles specified as 5mp arent same.. pixel clarity wil be diff in every fone.. jus because galaxy nexus support 1080p videos we cant expect galaxy r to support too.. fps capability too varies.. some support oly 24fps and most have 30fps.. i hv heard even h/w acceleration matters.. i think Tegra2 chipset can support 1080p.. Anyways good luck wit it guys..

I think we should have the hw capability since LG O2X is having 1080p video playback @ 24 fps. It has the same cpu and gpu.. Camera sensor is different..

Yes buddy. BTW nexus can record 1080p ar 24fps. So its clear the if we can do it, then that might b at 24fps.

yes.. even optimus 3d has 5mp camera ..
it records at full hd at 24 fps..
so try guys.. alllllllllllllllllllllll the best:good::good::good::good::good:
I dnt think its possible and even if its tweaked to record so, it may not luk gud as the sensor size is less.like a kind of cropped or zoomed video...This im telling with respect to photography..

This is the specifications of the Tegra2. I think our R is a bit cutted..

The Tegra 2 can record Full hd... I don't know if the camera sensor can.

why SO..?? its clearly showing that Tegra 2 can play 1080P video..
Now, I have installed LGcamera PRO, which has option of FULL HD recording but when I click on recording it says, Failed to record. A file is being created of 0 Bytes. Means If we can decode it then can have full HD recording..??
