This screen.
1GB+ RAM.
Dual-core CPU with decent graphics performance (if need be, look to suppliers other than Qualcomm) - that screen will need a fair amount of processing clout to back it up.
A big-ass battery.
Nice looking
For me:
I'd like a device where I wouldn't have to touch the screen to scroll. Maybe a reactive sensor built into the case that I could slide my hand and scroll the screen. Not a wheel or buttons, but something integrated into the screen or case. See the red line in the pic.

too much wasted real estate on your design.
Use the HD2 as a starting point and improve from there.

Your concept 2/HD3 one is what I'm talking about. Very industrial and sleek. Though for the capacitive keys at the bottom, I think a better design would to get rid of the bottom row, and instead, incorporate a hardware button on the side to toggle the onscreen/virtual buttons (menu, search, back, etc). Of course, having a realistic design is one thing, but for a concept, I think the future will do away with front buttons for a more cleaner look and thus having an effective full size screen from corner to corner with 3-4mm of bezel in between. I mean, looking back 5 years, you have hard keys gradually evolving into soft keys and it's only a natural evolution to have no keys at all. Virtual keys would be the new thing.
--
exactly! Though I know it's not for everyone, but if the intention of the idea/concept is to create a high-end smartphone for the future, everything has to be big, sleek and seamless. For instance, god forbid if I say this, but the iphone4 is heading toward that direction. You have a phone that doesn't have odd buldge from the camera or a hump in the back for the gps and whatnot and it's just a wonderful design sans the screen size. Rumor has it that Apple might be getting rid of the round button at the bottom and will probably utilize some sort of switch on the side to toggle the onscreen buttons/menus.

That's something I've pondered about from time to time, except I envisaged a secondary layer to the screen using some form of transparent LCD/OLED tech that the function buttons would appear on, so that they were completely disconnected from the main screen and would still function if, say, an app had frozen, in the way that proper buttons continue to work even if what's happening on screen has started to mess up.
There'd still need to be some hardware buttons other than the power button though, otherwise how would we boot into recover/bootloader etc?

Well, in that case, can't we do one better than Apple?
Especially if it's just going to be a concept...
Imagine a phone with completely rounded-off edges, kinda like two iPhone 3GSs placed screen-to-screen, only thinner of course.
You could have the screen cover the entire front half of the phone, including the front of the the curved areas. That'd be truly seamless.
Of course, that's just if you're limiting yourself to a semi-conventional design.
Given the potential advances in flexible displays in the next couple of years as well as recent breakthroughs in creating flexible circuitry, future smartphones could be very different indeed...
Well,I for one would like to see two high-quality stereo speakers, probably on top and bottom. That would be a true multimedia phone for me.
One more thing,to help out the gamers, would be something like a small, thin slide-out glass touch sensitive pad,on which the necessary buttons would appear for each game(like joysticks).
What I thought of many times would be the potential of a carbon-fibre-body phone. That, along with a scratch resistant glass(like gorilla glass) would finally make the phone much more sturdy and light.Although I don't know how it would fare with heat...
A nice addition would be a small "air pipe" that would go from top to bottom, with some special membrane that will let air go in and out but not water etc. That would help with the aformentioned heat problems!
Also,if it's not too much,a small projector on the back would be super cool.Although I don't quite place that in the mandatory section.
Other than that, the latest, most powerful hardware would suffice!Along with some new-technology battery to power the whole thing of course!
Maybe I'll come back with more, that's just a tiring days rant!

What I'd love is a dual-core landscape QWERTY. With a 4.3" high-res screen(SAMOLED+ etc) with a nice 5 row keyboard (nicely risen and spaced) with numbers on the top row, with a strong hinge. To be thin and light too. Have the screen cover most of the phone, so not a huge phone. Xenon flash with a nice camera, with good sensor too. There's a lot of other things I'd want too, just can't think atm haha.
Fuel cell battery? or any bigger battery. I'd rather have a thicker phone with more battery life than a thin phone with standard battery life.
Wireless charging, NFC.
Thunderbolt I/O Integration with faster onboard NAND? (SD cards and generally transferring anything over USB is horridly slow atm.)
HDMI out via a dock or a port on the phone? (I'm sure a dual core cpu would be able to handle 1080p)
15" tablet , 3mm thin , so u can cut a turkey in half wit it if ya dont have a knife on you on thanksgiving
nice disign

HTC manages to get them into the Desire HD, Mozart and all the other handsets with the unibody aluminium bodies.
I don't see why this would be any different.

Well, there'd be a battery cover on the design I suggested as well, so it could be done the same way.

Def need a qwerty landscape, sorry I just love the clicky and you can type without watching your fingers for no frame of reference.

Hi
I realized that there has been tons of thread about fav apps, games, phones, etc. but never about phone design. I have realized that I am not happy with my phone design, as a matter of fact there isn't any phone in the market of my design. So I have decided to draw it and talk about it (since I cant make it, lol). I am pretty sure others in this forum have prefferences for design.
DPAD/Track ball
I have moved to Android recently, bought a x10. After x10 came out I have started to note that a lot phones recently don't have dpad or track ball. I guess since multitouch screen came out they started to take out the dpad and track ball. You can see it in all of the new phones; just to name a few
Acer Liquid
Motoroi
Nokia X6
Samsung Captivate
HD2
TG01
Some HTC phones still have dpad though. It might seem very useless if you think about it. Now if you think it is useless try this, start typing and make a mistake (a wrong alphabet) but keep on typing then, try to come back to that alphabet. See how hard it is! When you are trying to go that alphabet, you tap on to the word but the cursor doesn't fall on that right place. Now if we had a dpad or track ball it would have solved the problem. I can totally understand why companies are recently avoiding those. I believe it is because, if they have to put a track ball or dpad it take up more frontal area therefore less area for screen (otherwise the phone will become pretty big). At the same time track ball and dpad both are big mechnical system so it takes volume too.
In motorola Backflip they really had an itelligent design. The trackpad in the back, I think other phones should do that too. Imagine nexus without the bottom part. It becomes small!!!
BUTTONS
Recently buttons are becoming touch-sensetive buttons. Why touch button?? They have no physical feedback! Well I understand it takes up more space and size to acomodate physical button, especailly when you have to put three or four. But there could be better way to solve this. Say you acomodate one button and four touch button. Now when you put your finger on top of a button, the LDR sences your finger then when you depress it then it fires. So it will be a plate of LDRs on top of a physical button. Check the pics for better understanding.
So anyone else has other designs??

I love the HD2 design, the pure simplicity and utility of it. Although the Nexus One is the most beautifully designed phones out there I perhaps slightly prefer a bit more industrial look.
Now if only I could snug a N1-type glowing trackball somewhere in there...
My phone has to have a portrait physical qwerty keyboard and a touchscreen, so either a front facing keyboard touch screen candy bar or a portrait touchscreen slider.
This is my favorite design, shame nothing continued that unbeatable line
Also Like Leo, Rhodium and Maple designs
I know I'll be going to hell for saying this, but the design of the iphone 4 is my favorite thus far. I noticed that a lot of smartphones out nowadays (HD2, incredible, EVO, droid, droid x, iphone 3g/3gs, etc etc) really don't have a simplistic and elegant look to them. Something always gotta stick out, odd lines, little chin, curvy body, etc. But with the iphone4, everything is flushed. It doesnt wobble, nothing is really sticking out where it shouldn't and most of all, it looks very elegant and "high-end." Sure I couldn't care less about the iOS, but I have to give props to the designers and the manufacturing processes to achieve that level of end result. I just wish HTC would pull their collective heads out of their asses and start going industrial with their design. Looking at their leaked 2010 roadmap from the beginning of the year, it seems like all their phones have the same shell but just different internals.
EDIT: of course, I'm talking about the overall aesthetic and not radio antenna placement ;]
I'm going with a slide-out keyboard.
The black-berry design with they keyboard under the screen, the keyboard is too small and hard to use.
I love my Tytn II, the newer phones with the Snapdragon CPU would be great.
Touch Pro 2 design, same idea.

You're not alone. There's so many Android phones coming out, but I have yet to see one that is able to match the aesthetics of Apple or even Nokia. I really wish there was an Android phone that looked as good as the iPhone 4.

Hello Everyone. I am here today to talk to you about Project Pluto.
This is a small update, I have been working with anodized aluminum for a little while and i found that it scratches a bit too often.
That is why I made some design changes, the top and bot of the phone are still dark grey aluminum but the center is composed of the glass in the front and a soft touch material that wraps around the device.
This soft touch material in a bit higher (0.5-1mm) than the aluminum so that when laid on a desk the aluminum does not touch the surface.
The main advantages that this design has is the high durability, better grip and a removable back cover which can lead to a replaceable battery if spares are available.
Please leave feedback bellow, I want to make something that people will enjoy using.
Disclaimer FCC and CE logos are for demonstration purposes only.
I think this is a great idea maybe you should start a kickstarter page. I would love a phone designed by fans for fans and not just for profit (although i'm sure there would be some)
Also don't forget Micro SD
Nice looking piece of hardware.
Looks like a radio... No offense, just stating what I see.

Up to 32 gig SD Card, forgot to put it in the specs info. The plan is to ask for funding on kickstarter after a few prototypes are ready,
Funding is needed to buy the parts for the first batch of phones and also for the FCC approval process if it is needed.
And yes, the goal is for this to be a 5 person project, so profits are going to be low.
Hey if you get a page up and you have a prototype or two I'd be in i love the idea and I would imagine it would be nexus like with updates
And I bet once this becomes farther along you will have a lot of support from on here.
The look of it reminds me of the N9
Also as someone who is right handed having the power button on the left makes it slightly awkward to reach.

When the kickstarter page is up I'll be sure to send you a message,
The design looks a bit n9y and a bit like the old ipod nanos. and some iphone thrown in there.
Also the lock button is on the right, initially the picture of it was supposed to be on top of the "back picture" but it looked weird on Photoshop.
The lock button is on the right, basically the same place the iPhone has it.

-Add a little more room to top and bottom and put on a front facing camera
-Round the edges on the top and bottom as well you don't want when people grip the phone for them to have sharp edges and the bottom corners
Also about the power button
-Ohh ok sorry when i was looking at it it looked reversed
Also what kind of screen? i know the resolution but what kind of material for the screen

Front Facing camera, like NFC can not be added for 2 reasons, thickness. the current one is 11.5mm thick already, and price, the current specs are already quite expensive. a ffc would add another 12 dollars in manufacturing costs. and could not be done with the company we are looking to partner with.
the top and bottom don't feel like hard edges because of the sides are rounded. I've tried many ways to round it but I cannot find a way in which it works well and doesn't look stupid. If you find a way draw it and ill add to the design and see if people like it
The screen is regular amoled with qhd resolution

but the hardware will be open, meaning someone could port meego or tizen to it.

Ahh ok well the FFC and NFC aren't necessities but they would be cool yet i can understand where you are coming from it seems like the cost for the phone itself would be close to the selling price. Also good to know that the edges aren't to rough and are slightly rounded.
Is it possible to get a size comparison between this phone and maybe one or two other ones to give us an idea on what the size of it will be
Ps ohhhh i was hoping for amoled

The back reminds be too much of a radio really with how the speaker grill is designed and the bland back. Plus the object protruding out of the top reminds me of an antenna unless that is simply a arrow.
If you are going for a minimalistic style then you've kept on tune. Just simply not my style.

It may not look it from this angle, but the phone is actually curved slightly, and the camera lense is built slightly inset from the top & bottom edge of the handset, so the lense wouldn't get scratched when you place it down, something for HTC to remember next time maybe!
Here's a 10 second video clip of the model.
Comments welcome
NOTE: Looks a lot better in HD

Ideas for another design? something different?
It's pretty nice, but that camera definitely needs to be moved. I don't even want to think about the awkwardness of trying to hold that with one hand and take a picture.
a few things about this:
-the camera is ridiculous. can you imagine laying that thing down on a table?
-why all the third party apps, and stuff in the notification bar? it makes it seem less realistic.
-It should really have onscreen buttons.
-storage/ram isn't unreasonable at all.
-you left on the docking pins? i always thought more devices should have those, not less.
-looks like sense 4.1 to me. normally a jump in numbers means a change in UI.
-good going with the battery % image though, that should be standard on all android devices.
-if you want to make this a real superphone, try adding in a really great 8 MP camera sensor
-what's "full HD" mean? full 720p? TrueHD (1080p)? If its 720p, then you should bump it up to 800 x 1280, so it surpasses "retina" PPI. If its 1080p, than this should really be a 5"+ phone.
Overall though, I like it. looking forwards to seeing more renders form you

The camera wouldnt touch the table if u place it down, the phone is curved slightly to avoid this (it's hard to see in the image) The reason I put it there is simple, thats were I personally would preffer it to go. When I take pictures (landscape) I tend to hold my One X with both hands, and I'm always covering the lense up with my fingers. It's just an idea anyway, I'm re-working this design slightly in the next one, but for now the camera is staying in the middle :cyclops:
The apps... I literally couldn't find a decent quality screenshot of the generic ROM, so that screenshot is off my One X as is.
Onscreen buttons? It has the 3 touch buttons that the One series have.
I'd love to see a phone like this with massive amounts of memory. I have a lot of music (and I mean a lot, like around 3TB worth) so this for me would be a great feature, and I would happily pay more for that extra 32GB So this is kinda like my ideal dream phone really.
I contemplated about the docking pins but just decided not to add them, the next one has them
I used a screenshot from my One X running ARHD 9.x so the UI is actually sense 4.1 (I actually just made up the specs from my head).
Battery % image is from the Battery mod in the One X dev section, a must have.
Full HD just means at-least 1080p resolution. Like I said this is really just an idea, I didn't even consider the technical details until after the render was finished.
The next one is a little "curvier"

Ahh... yeah that would be better I guess. Save some of that valuable screen space. Although I do like how you can see the 3 buttons on the phone when the screen is off, and I know a lot of people use the middle button as a wake-up for the screen, instead of the power button. I may do a more unusual design after my current one

Yes the camera position is a screamer. Also... 2gb ram. This thing ought to run like a chicken on heroin. And maybe you should bump 8 to 12 megapixels. 8 seems to be the industry standard nowadays. Instead of the bezel being a constant thinness all around, maybe be a bit longer on the top. I can see that you wanted to make the back look like a real camera so you put the lense central. Great post though - refreshing.

From the way it looks, having the phone curved that way would make it awkward to hold.

pretty nice, but its almost identical to the one x, and the camera is in the middle, not good
Hi,
I created a little concept about the successor of the Nexus 5. Maybe its called Nexus 6 or Nexus 5 (2014).
Rumors say that it will have a 5.5" display so I decided to build this in my concept. Its just a 2D render, not a 3D or something.
I were really amazed that this 5.5" display fits in a body which is just a few millimeters larger than the one of the Nexus 5. I compared the two.
So final question: What do you think about my concept?

looks nice but a bezel that thin would give you random touches on the side when trying to hold the device

Perhaps making the device thicker by a mm or two would prevent the random touches you mention.
Would also mean a larger (higher capacity) battery could be installed.
Though the almost bezel-less design, when used with a protective case/bumper may cause issues with screen edge touches.

Nice to hear your opinions
For those bezels they might have to move the buttons to the back ala LG G2/3. I like it though.
The bezel is too small, and the fact that the bottom has a different shape to the top really annoys me. Like the speaker grille though.
No bezel barely will mean bigger cases would be overlapping the screen space. Not good. For marks, or using pie or sidebars.
I like it! Never did care for Bezels...they sux's!
Do any of you guys realize and/or think about the implications of razor thin bezels? Disregarding the issue of the digitizer registering touches simply by holding the device, there are physical/engineering issues to consider. The screen has to be held within some type of housing, not just to protect the screen but the rest of the phone itself, and the bezels on your mockup are less than 1 mm thick. Exactly what type of material do you envision the housing to be made of? Even aluminum wouldn't have enough strength at under a single mm thick. Titanium? What do you think that would do to the price of the phone?
So, to achieve bezels like this would require either a significant increase in cost or a significant reduction in durability, and this is on top of the compromise in usability. And for what purpose? Exactly what is gained from having such thin bezels?
Lastly, and not to sound like an ass, but wouldn't it be better to think up something new and/or innovative instead of just marching down road obvious? Seriously... larger screen, thinner bezels? Let me guess, you see it being a 4k resolution screen too... for no other reason than just because.
I'm sure the OP isn't actually designing it.
The makers know what works. And regardless..... Most things point to no more nexus phones anyway. ?
I'm not a graphics designer or somewhat else and I'm not familiar with building phones so that was just a try how I thought it could look.
Nevertheless many thanks for your opinions and comments.

Lenovo NBD new glass C100, the latest project of Lenovo’s New Business Development Platform, is arguably one of the most anticipated device yet in the fast-growing wearable computing market in China. Lenovo NBD has sent out the test hardware to only a limited number of testers, and the one unit for me just arrived.
If you haven’t heard of the Lenovo NBD before, well, it stands for New Bench in Chinese, and specified as New Business Development(NBD) in English. It is a new internet-centric business platform in China aimed at startups, providing a vehicle where partner startups can leverage Lenovo’s resources such as software, hardware, sales channels and services utilizing their own innovative technologies and leading-edge concepts in product development. This collaboration is an example of a win-win outcome from sharing resources and can drive the development of more powerful smart devices for customers. The first wave of three innovative smart devices under NBD has already been launched last October, namely the new glass smart glasses, the new air smart air cleaner and the newifi smart router.
Unboxing
The unit we have received has very fascinating packaging. It ships in an expensive wooden box which, according to Lenovo, costs more than RMB100 ($16) to make. The reason that Lenovo invested so much in the packaging is that our unit is a collector’s edition, the retail version’s packaging will certainly differ.
You could easily find the Lenovo NBD logo on the wooden box. There is no sign of the all familiar Lenovo logo on anywhere of the packaging, so it’s clear that the products from the NBD Platform are marketed separately from Lenovo’s well-known PC and smartphone lines.
Opening the new glass packaging feels like opening a drawer, as there are two slide guides on the two side of the box, we simply need to push the cap away.
Everything inside the packaging has been well arranged and carefully fixed into the openings in a black foam.
Here are everything contained in the beautiful packaging, including a charger (5V-1A), a data/charging cable (Micro USB plug), a headphone with a single earbud, three clamps which help you fix the new glass onto your own glasses or sunglasses, a plastic frame, and the main body of the new glass itself.
The 5V-1A charger included by Lenovo NBD can easily be replaced by most of the smartphone chargers, which is good considering that you don’t always have to carry a separate charger for the glass and that any mobile charger can come in handy when the device runs short of juice.
Instead of a cylindrical cord, the USB cord ships with the new glass is wide and flat, making it really easy to wind up and less likely to get tangled. I’d really like to see more of these with other products such as smartphones and tablets.
A red headphone with a single earbud is also included. The good news is that it looks fashionable and aligned with the design language of the new glass, the bad news is that you might never want to use it because of its lack of quality and stereo effects. Fortunately it can easily be replaced by any pair of headphones, both my Monster Inspiration on-ear headphone and my Astrotec IEMs work like a charm with the new glass.
The plastic frame is designed mainly for non-shortsighted users, with two rubber nosepads affixed to attach to the bridge of your nose. Here I do feel the need to lament Lenovo’s choice of material, a more durable titanium frame would have made much more sense for a cutting-edge product like the new glass.
However, if you are short-sighted and don’t like using contact lenses, you can easily fix the main body of the new glass onto the frame of your own pair of glasses with one or two of these clamps.
Now let’s take a look at the main body of new glass. It consists of two major parts: a large battery pack that is designed to sit around the back of the wearer’s neck, and a main unit which is supposed to sit on the right-hand arm of the users’ glasses. With a small acrylic prism on the front, the main unit houses 1GB RAM, a 1.2GHz OMAP4460 dual-core processor, WiFi 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth, GPS, 16GB of total flash, and more. The two major parts are connected with a red fixed cable.
On the front of the unit is an angled reflector which receives the projected light, and bends it towards the users’ right eye, allowing them to view the new glass display in all its glory. Lenovo NBD likened the display to viewing a 25-inch HD television from 2 meters away and it’s a claim I wouldn’t refute. The new glass display has a resolution of 800*480, and with all things considered, it looks phenomenal.
An 8 megapixel camera also sits on the front of the unit, next to a small light sensor. The camera could take pictures up to the resolution of 2592*1944, and record 1080P videos. Although it might not match the snappers on those high-end smartphones in terms of the quality of the photos, it is decent enough and certainly gives the 5MP camera on the Google Glass a run for its money.
Taking a photo is accomplished by single pressing the camera button on the top side of the unit. Pressing and holding that button, the new glass will start recording videos. The side facing the human face plays host to an earpiece for phone calls and voice assistant, and a proximity sensor.
On the back of the unit is a very well-designed touch panel, which makes it easy for you to use all the features of the new glass. Swiping sideways you can switch to the left or right page, swiping down then you will go back to the last screen. You can use voice commands as well, but they won’t be as easy or as accurate as the touch operations.
The battery pack design, now patented by Lenovo, is one of the major differences from the Google Glass. It may look like a blind fold, but it is constructed to sit around the back of your neck.
The bottom side of the pack hosts a Micro USB port for charging and data transmission, the opening is protected by a rubber lid which keeps the battery pack from dust and steam.
On the top side you will find a 3.5mm audio jack and the pinhole from which the fixed cable that connects the pack to the unit comes through.
The Power/Standby Key sits on the tip of the left arm of the battery pack. I personally hate the design as the button is too small and not always easy to press, besides, it is also not as clicky as we would have liked.
The battery pack is made of environmentally friendly material that is harmless to the human skin. And the area where the pack makes direct contact to the skin is made from thermal insulation material and curved in a way to keep your skin from the heat produced by the battery.
The clamps can help you easily fix the unit of the new glass onto your own pair of glasses.
Both my GUNNAR computer eyeglasses and my Bally sunglasses can conveniently host the new glass with the help of those clamps.
You can also use the standard frame from the packaging if you are not short-sighted or prefer going out with contact lenses.
First impressions
This is what the new glass looks like when you wear it with the standard frame around your head. There is no denying that the device is striking and head-turning, and easily gets you a lot of attention if you wear it in the street. Some may love how it looks, others may hate it, but either way it is undeniably striking.
I remember posting this selfie on my Wechat Moments (similar to Instagram) and got hundreds of comments below in only a couple of hours, asking me what the new glass is and what I can do with it. So there’s no doubt that the new glass will attract lots of attentions for the wearers.
As a first generation product, the new glass doesn’t have an equally rich software ecosystem as the Google Glass, nor does it have as many features. The functions of the new glass are still pretty limited, we only have 5 preinstalled applications: Still Camera, Video Camera, Messaging, Navigation and Voice Assistant. I went out and took some photos with the 8 mega-pixel camera and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by its performance, auto-focus was fast, image production was fast. There were sometimes over or under-exposed pictures, but the overall performance was really really good. Let’s take a look at some of the snaps:
The functions of the voice assistant are very amateur, definitely no match for what Google Now or Siri is capable of. It only supports Chinese language at the moment, and may support other languages in the near future. Navigation worked as designed, useful, but far from perfect. As the new glass is currently running the earliest firmware, we assume that most of the functions will soon be improved by OTA upgrade.
A more detailed review of the Lenovo NBD new glass C100 will be posted here in a few days, please tell us what you think about the device and what you want to know.
