Is Froyo Stable?

so now that there is a froyo leak out for our phones, is it stable enough to update to it? i was thinking of going for the cognition v2.2 froyo, but obviously dont want a ton on unreliability problems lol...so whats the status on that?

I can't speak to cognition, but I have been running Froyo since it came out a few days ago (no root or lagfix) and it seems fine. Some have complained about lag - if it is there, it is not near as bad as stock 2.1. Others have said the browser has a memory leak - i have not run into that yet either.
Overall the plusses outway the minuses. I am happy with it so far. I have not had any crashes or FCs and the GPS is no worse then JH7. Unless i find a show stopper issue, I will keep it for now.

I would call it Beta. There is still stuff that looks like they ported the i9000 Rom over and they still need to do a little clean up. Some EU spellings of things, some minor bugs, Wireless AP and USB tether are present.
I think this is the 2.2 Captivate Base that they will build from. A solid Beta, but not the final.

It has been running fine for me. Once Rom Manager gets updated things will be great. Only AppsInstaller doesn't work for me but its not really that big of a deal.

This FROYO is actually very stable in that everything works perfect.............Have been running for 24 hrs barely so theres a bit more testing needed but yea its definately a GO . At first i got a couple of force closes on several of stock apps like music, phone, and a couple of others but only happend once and never happen again kind of like if it was still setting up or something but besides that and some odd color changes 2.2 is stunning i notice an overall snappier feel market 2x quiker (i dont use lag fix because it ruinned my OS a few times thats just me) and with root enabled the limitations are infinate

I've only been using it for half the day, but I have to say that samsung fixed most of the little annoying problems with this phone. We finally got the phone we paid for with the exception of lag. It's still there, but the one click lag fix solves that. All in all,i recommend the update. Especially with cognition.

I'm running the most recent release of Cognition 2.2 for Froyo with the built in one click lag fix. (Even though I really didn't even need to run the lag fix, its that smooth) It is sick. Phone is just silky smooth in all aspects. The only thing I noticed was that flash was slowing the browser down a little, but only on super large pages with tons of plug ins like huffingtonpost so I set the plug in setting to "on demand" and now I can't find a page large enough to slow down the browser. I put it next to my friends new Iphone4 and it was embarassing how much faster the Captivate was loading pages. Only things that arent working on 2.2 yet are titanium backup, which you really shouldnt use for this anyway since you don't want to install 2.1 apps on the 2.2 update, and Rom manager, but I fully expect that with the level of support we've seen from the Rom dev, he will have it updated in no time as well as an update for Titanium. Overall, I almost feel for the first time that I no longer need to scour the forums looking for ways to improve the phone. It is just sick (have I said how sick it is?) how well it runs with Cognition. GPS works perfectly, and I don't mean just getting locks. I put it on my dash and have been driving around a lot for two days and My Tracks is right on. My position does not drift off the road AT ALL anymore. No more being on other streets and otherwise just drifting around all nilly willy. GPS Test shows at least 6 or 7 locked satellites and usually 9 or 10 locked. I don't think I would get better performance out of a Garmin or Tom Tom. It does get better sat locks on the dash with a clear view of the sky rather than in the cup holder in the center console however, but that is to be expected with any GPS device. Even so, it was still fully functional in the cupholer.
I installed by Odin one click back to stock, did a GSM Master Reset via the phone keypad *2767*3855# then rooted, put the downloaded Cognition 2.2 file on my internal sd card, and then installed with Rom Manager, (works because I'm back on 2.1 at this point) I HIGHLY recommend this. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with all the spare time I just freed up by not having to flash my phone a million more times
P.S. If you can, donate a few bucks to DesignGears for the work he has done with this. It's totally worth it! It's amazing that he's gotten a ROM out so fast with the release and he is constantly working on, upgrading, and tweaking his work to make it better. (which is why im sure I'll be flashing again in the future /cry)

What does that have to do with Froyo as a stable OS?

I just opened Cnet tv and I could play the video.

I can play them. Just click the names. 2.2 stock 'beta'.

Go to pocketnow.com (full desktop version) and click through a few articles there. Muhahaha. Scrolling will become ultra slow, other apps will be forced out of memory, and you may even get a browser crash if you're lucky. That's the memory leak bug.

Go to the site and open your task manager. Is the browser not using about 100 MB of memory? Memeory leak.

The FroYo build is stable and fast. I like it.

I rolled back. It is stable - but some of the underlying features are broken. Forwarding emails does not include any comments you make. Google contact groups now work, but the listed names map to the wrong contacts.
Some nice improvements overall, but some issues are show stoppers for me. It won't crash though - or at least it didn't for me.

Has anyone tried enabling jit on this? I know it was attempted on 2.1 but no one made it past the lock screen before it bootlooped on the galaxy s. 2.2 is made for jit & it should be more stable now right? All I could find in the forums is how to do this for other phones like the droid x (sounds pretty unstable though) & im too much of a noob to figure out how to apply that to my captivate to try it.

Froyo has been pretty stable for me, and certainly better overall than 2.1 was. It still needs work to have what I would call a well-polished feel, but overall I find it to be an upgrade.
I'm hoping it is a beta, and we'll get an even better one soon

[Q] Experiences with the Rogers Canada Captivate?

Hey all, first post here. Currently I'm interested in the Rogers Galaxy S Captivate (seem to be a million different versions of the galaxy which is quite confusing). Beyond a few basic reviews/unboxings I can't really find much information on this phone. Without doing a long drawn out post I'll cut to my questions quick (I apologize if I'm posting this in the wrong forum and the noobish questions):
- What are peoples general experiences with this phone? Loves and hates?
- Froyo support, is there an official Froyo build from rogers or is it limited to 3rd party ROMs etc?
- When it comes to 3rd party ROMs etc, just how mod-able is this phone?
- Is WiFi tethering possible/available with a 3rd party ROM?

1) random shutdown issue with one of my phones. GPS problem with second. Third was fine (GPS/no shutdowns) but the build is "creaky". GPS is really fast and accurate and no problems. Battery lasts decent, depends how much you have the screen on for. Right now I can last 4 hours on idle with wifi/3G on and lose maybe 1%. Of course, nothing is really going on.
2-4 No clue yet. Haven't flashed. Kind of waiting for Froyo release from Rogers.

bought a captivate directly from rogers the day it came out off-contract. GPS worked perfectly, even weeks after, navigation and all still locked fast and accurately. However, as far as I am concerned, the 2.2 froyo release by rogers is still not out..so i rooted the phone through download mode with a .zip (took 5 seconds), and since then, have flashed every rom you could imagine. All running great, the phone has restart once..randomly, but other then that, battery life and all has been super good. Haven't had any problems, so i'd say it's pretty good if you have any more specific questions, feel free to ask. and btw, wifi tethering is possible, at least with froyo on any of the main 3rd party roms.

Wifi tethering was in stock rom just so you know. Go into wifi settings

I think you should be okay since you're getting it much later than most other people... I think I'm included as well. I had the shutdown problem but a factory reset fixed it, so I think it was just a software issue on my end. GPS is still spotty, works great and accurately but sometimes doesn't. I also have the slight problem with search popping up randomly, but I am not too bothered by that.
Otherwise it's fine, I love this phone. Everyone is so intrigued when I pull it out.

Thanks a lot. In your opinion, what's the best 2.2 ROM? One I've heard mentioned the most is Cognition.

In general, the phone is really quite good. The Rogers stock GPS doesn't have the issues that the AT&T GPS appears to have, but the modem is HSDPA not HSUPA so upload speed is limited to around 300-400 Kbps and download is limited to around 5Mbps max). Rogers also don't put on a load of bloatware which is really quite nice. Stock Rogers phone even comes with tethering enabled (USB or WiFi using MyAP). With my phone I can't really say I had any "Hates"..a few minor annoyances, such as
- the contact groups (in stock) never syncs the Google Groups
- the calendar app has no "conference call" option, I had this on my OpenEtna phone

No official Froyo support as yet. Rogers saying early 2011. Froyo is only available in custom ROMs based on a leaked ROM and now also based on the GT-i9000 (e.g. Galaxy S "Vibrant" from Bell...as well as some stuff from the Telus "Fascinate" too), as there are official Froyo builds for that (which are not without their own problems too).

Very easy, particularly from rogers as they have not prevented you from loading software in any way, so you can simply download z4root or oclf or the like, directly to your phone from it's browser and run it locally to root your phone. There are a few ways to install the ROMs but they are mostly detailed in their own announcement threads and pretty much cover the bases. There is also a ROM installer HowTo in the QnA or Question section of the Samsung Captivate forum.

All of the ROMs that the Chefs put out are really quite good. It mostly comes dow to a personal preference. One thing to be aware of is the ROM limitations. These are usually listed in their announce thread too:
Note that if you want HSUPA (up to 5.6 Mbps up/7.4 Mbps down) then you need one of the i9000 based modems. You can often put different modems from different ROMs into your own phone, but there are some limitations. The modem should come from the same build (e.g. don't put a 2.1 modem in a 2.2 ROM), some modems are HSDPA only (e.g. the Rogers and AT&T based ones) and that the modem bin is used for more than modem processing, it appears to be used in DSP so it affects that voice call handling. With some modems as a result, you may not be heard on a voice call..so test. It's not to big a deal as you can easily swap out a modem for another.
Cogntion and Perception are ROMs both by DesignGears. I liked them both but couldn't get the combination of features I wanted (which they NOW have) and I couldn't get hold of DesignGears to provide me with his set-up for compiling the kernal (one of the few chefs that compiles his own kernels...most use kernels from other people). To my thinking Perception is more "active" than Cognition leading to cognition being (considered by some) more stable...but it's just a matter of preference. I think that Cognition is not capable of HSUPA but Perception is...though withough checking I may have that the wrong way around.
Axura 2.5 is what I am currently running, though there will be no more development on the "old" Axura because AdamHolden, the latest Axura chef received too many negative comments for his liking and quit. He is starting a new ROM with a team rather than as an individual (see here).
I hear good comments about Assonance, but haven't tried it since using Axura as it fit all my needs.
There are also many others. Just take a browse through the "Captivate Android Development" forum and you will see a number of [ROM] threads. Take a quick read of atleast the first 3-4 posts on the thread as those are used to identify the current version, features, state and issues.

I love my SGS. Feels very snappy with some tweaking and a different launcher, battery life is 24-48 hours with average usage (again with some settings tweaks). No GPS or Shutdown issues on my side and I bought the phone when it was first available. A few people at my work have the phone and I've heard no issues with it at all. One tiny issue I have seen is that some texts seem to come in with an incorrect time stamp. They seem to be about 5 hours off. This can be easily fixed with a simple app so I don't even think about it anymore.

As has been mentioned before, no Froyo yet but that's pretty standard for Rogers. On the plus side there is a Gingerbread ROM being made which looks very sexy in the I9000 forums by supercurio and others.

I rooted my phone in a matter of minutes with z4 root, very simple, one click. I have tried to lag fix my device using oclf but it failed. I know it's not the phone though since a friend of mine has the same phone and his works great. If you like quadrant stats, he's right up there. I personally haven't used any ROM's yet but I will be in the near future. From what I can see there are a lot of ROM's available and it seems like a pretty simple process.

Haven't bothered, I don't need it so I don't know.
I definitely recommend this phone

No issues for a (relatively) simple user that just wants froyo. Love how un-branded rogers left this phone compared to my SE dumbphones and whatnot.
Never tried thethering (as i have no idea how much data i have left)
GPS Test gets a lock within 15 or so seconds with 50ft accuracy (lowers down to around 30 after a bit)
I think i had one of the newer batches (purchased from corporate - early December)

The Captivate is amazing with Rogers, my wife and I both have one and they are fast, solid build, and just a joy to use.

Trying to decide which ROM to go with, hoping it fixes my issues

Ok, I was an early adopter of this phone bought it the day it came out July 18th. There are a great many things that disappoint me about this phone, main thing being lack of Froyo at the moment. I'm tired of waiting for samsung, I have little faith it will truely resolve my issues which are the following
In order to use wifi I must reboot my phone, this only occurred after the official JH7 was loaded on it through the over the air update that ATT did.
Constantly having lag all the time, and having apps running that I never ever use and dont want such as ATT Navigator, ATT Family Map, etc. I was able to root the phone and get rid of those but it really hasnt helped.
My stereo bluetooth headphones must be paired EVERY single time I want to use them, its not the headphones because they work perfectly with 4 other devices.
Of course the GPS, it sucks for everyone, any of these or all fix that? Samsung seems unwilling.
So maybe I'm wishing too much but I've watched almost every youtube review of the ROMs that are out there and theres a few details that stick out for things that I want in a rom so I'll detail them here and hopefully someone can point me in the right direction as to which one has the best combo.
1. froyo based, I need 2.2 for certain apps
2. I've heard theres different modems that can affect HSPA, I want fastest download and upload.
3. No wild color schemes, I dont like orange or green. I quite like the look of the phone I think samsung did a great job with the touchwiz and I know theres alot of you out there that perfer the "vanilla" versions of Android. I'm not one of those people. I really loved the look of the cognition rom and some of the things it had visually.
4. Overclocking would be nice but not at the expense of battery life, I'm right in the 24-30 hour range just as most are on here, better would be great if possible.

Go to romkitchen.org and build your own there. There are many threads about the advantages of one modem over another, and you can pick pretty much everything yourself. Then search for CLShortfuse's GPS fix and you'll be set.

24-30 hours of what kind of use? There are a couple roms out there with stock appearance

Andromeda

30 hours, you have to consider what you are asking. I want faster dl, no lag, better gps, but I don't want to eat any more battery. It is possible to get 30hrs of light to moderate use. Heavy use will yield 12-18

Andromeda v1.2 is a rom that is pretty vanilla....simple and has the things your looking for. You have to try roms that you think will be what you want.

+2 for Andromeda 1.2.

You can fix all of these if you root the phone. The best ROM out there is the Rom Kitchen (aka "Doc's ROMs") over at romkitchen.org. You can "cook up" your own ROMs using the specifications you want. This is what is so great about the ROM kitchen, especially when compared to the other ROMs like Cognition: you can pick what you want, and don't have to take whatever it was that someone else decided was best. For example, if you want the benefits of rooting but want to keep touchwiz, the ROM kitchen has an option for that. It also lets you pick things like the theme, boot animation, apps, etc. There are 5 captivate modems, and you might just have to experiment to see which one is best. I did this, and it was well worth it. The one that worked best for me was the XXJPP modem. Just load a seperate ROM with each of the different modems, flash each, and download a few things to see which is faster. Also check and see how well the GPS works on each.
Rooting will fix the lag, although one of the ROM kitchen kernels (Glitterball's Voodoo) will improve it even further. There is something called "Project Voodoo" which is a community of developers who build a kernel tweak called Voodoo which completely fixes the remaining lag issue (this is caused by the inefficient way the captivate organizes its folders), and also improves a few other features such as resolution.

You should go try out my ROM its small and fast and stable. I'm getting great battery life and DL/UL speeds. Give it a shot.

Well I decided to go with the serendipity 5.9, I love the speed, my upload and download speeds almost doubled, bluetooth and wifi finally work like they are supposed to!!
I do have a few complaints though, like the keyboard for texting, I loved the samsung one, I hate swipe any way i can get the stock one back on there?

I just found that, wow, short of having a flash on the camera and video chat this phone is now everything I could have ever dreamed of
Holy crap what a difference. Everything actually works and is super fast. I would be on cloud nine right now except for the fact I'm probably soon getting the Atrix, this will def hold me over till then.

Im using Precision 3.5 with the monochrome 3.5 theme. Its running the latest suckerpunch kernel. For sure my favorite combo I've tried so far. Its really amazing, not to mention dev'd by ryude, who is one of the best!

Samsung Captivate running Serendipity 5.12 Paragon6 1200-100hz (uv'd and slightly oc'd) and I9000XXJVE modem. Almost have it edited/themed up how I want it. Need to get started on custom icons and I think I want to try my hand at a completely custom framework. Anyway, I was perfectly happy with 'dipity out of the box, but since I've flashed Paragon this phone is AMAZING. It's quite fast and the battery seems to last forever. Just now recharging for the first cycle after having to reflash my rom w/o a full battery, so after today I'll know for sure how long the battery last, but initially it seems like I'll get a day or so with my daughter constantly playing video's and games all day.

I have tried the team phoenix roms. I'm currently running phoenix 7.0 and am happy so far.

I am running phoenix. 7 with latest paragon 1200 rom using uv and this is by far the best combo I have had yet. Using jl3 modem and call quality is great. I change roms almost daily and this one will be here for a while, I am happy with everything this combo has to offer and speed and battery life is excellent.

...How quickly things change, now running Serendipity 6 with all the above still the same.. although I think I may flash the 1400 Paragon and try that out..

just went up to Serendipity 6.2 yesterday, same battery issues again im trying to do what I did last time to fix that part
busy day though, just got an ipad last night been trying to ha0xr that thing, no luck on jailbreaking 4.3 yet though

im still working through my first charge after wiping the battery stats so im sure it will be better once I cycle through
In those screen shots posted how did you get those multiple icons at the bottom? i mean other than the stock serendipity theme. im running the redrom right now, i dont want to lose the red but i would like the more icons at the bottom other than the phone the :: for app tray and the globe for internet

In those screen shots posted how did you get those multiple icons at the bottom? i mean other than the stock serendipity theme. im running the redrom right now, i dont want to lose the red but i would like the more icons at the bottom other than the phone the :: for app tray and the globe for internet

I wouldn't mind knowing either. I'm thinking it's a different launcher, but I'm only guessing. Still kinda new to android.

[Q] Newer captivates

Hello. Since no one seems to comment on this, I was just wondering if people have been using newer captivates and if the GPS on those units is working? If you had one built recently and had GPS flawlessly working it could mean samsung quietly fixed the bug. Just wondering if getting a cheaper captivate over the atrix is worth it since custom ROMing on this phone is so easy and fun

I got mine in December at Walmart for $48.00. It's a 1012 build and the GPS was marginal at best on stock eclair 2.1. On any custom rom here it rocks. I've had outstanding gps on Di11i's 6.0 and on Cog 4.1 with plumbbobs .93 fix.
But to answer your question, I'd say no,they haven't fixed anything.

So in other words you can use your GPS for tracking/navigation etc and it works ok? I think these xda devs should open up their own mobile company lol. Amazing work if they can fix what a huge corporation is unable to! Hats off to you all

I got my phone about 2-3 weeks ago. It's a 1012 build as well. Stock 2.1 GPS was terrible and rarely worked.
With most custom ROMs it has seemed to work much better. Whatever GPS fix FireFly 2.3 uses works GREAT. I've had 75%-85% luck with Andromeda and ~50% with Cognition. Its kind of a crapshoot.
My guess is Samsung is making these phones using the absolute cheapest garbage components they can - It's the only explanation for the varying results in speed, GPS, and overall usability on the same ROMs on 2 identical phones.
I'm running Andromeda right now and use a Speedometer app using GPS and it works pretty damn well to give me +/- 3MPH.

It works great in Srendipity, haven't tried it in movement but it finds me fast and with +-30 meters radius...

I have an older Cappy, v1008, and truly I don't find it that much worse than my TomTom.
There are distinct caveats to each device. The TomTom takes far longer to lock in new time zones, but tracks a bit better. Both hate the concrete jungle, ie the financial district in SF... Manhattan.

I have a 1012 build also and have a flawless GPS....and it was that way out of the box on stock Eclair 2.1 too! Now, on Serendipity, I get a lock INSIDE the house within 6-8 seconds. On stock 2.1 it wasn't much different either.
I'm just one of the lucky ones I guess.....

I never did and still don't have an issue on either Captivate I own.
I asked before if people with issues live in cities, which would explain GPS issues with any device.

Mine is build 1101 and out of the box I have had no GPS complaints. It locked fine in less than 10 seconds indoors with Eclair, and still does that with Froyo. Outside, it's usually less than 5 seconds. Tracking seem really accurate.

mine is one of those 1101 versions...i'm guessing it's new since i've only recently acquired it...didn't even use stock captivate, went straight to custom roms and it's gps is pretty solid...alot better than my milestone if that counts for anything

Yeah, Serendipity had good GPS as well. I've flashed so many roms in the last month it's nuts...

Happy with rooted stock Froyo..huh?

Not sure what's happening but I got my replacement Infuse (bad camera on my original Infuse) and have only rooted and frozen a few apps thus far....and it's running unbelievable for the first 24 hours!!
wifi speedtest is very strong and as good as any other rom I've used....battery life is crazy good...and launcher speed (I always use Go Launcher) is fabulous. AND the biggie...the GPS connected within 30 seconds on the first try inside? Huh?
This is NOTHING like my original Infuse.
SO, I need to test a bit more with data speeds...cross my fingers...and maybe I can keep it almost stock Froyo ROM until the final GB comes )).

I used to own the captivate and would flash all sorts of different crap on it. I got the Infuse when it came out and have been on stock froyo ever since and it's been fine except for the lack of a native SIP stack.
With modems, everyone seems to keep flashing different iterations and keep getting completely different results. I like to think the majority of modem packages are more or less the same and your speed just depends on where you are and how many other people are using the same data band nearby.
GPS itself depends heavily on time servers and not just satellite connections... I find I can always get instant fixes in a particular area if I ping a bunch of different time servers listed at http://support.ntp.org/bin/view/Servers/NTPPoolServers and use fasterfix app to force the phone to always use the fastest/most stable time server instead of being distributed/randomly allocated a server from some national list. Not saying this is definitely the way to go, especially if you travel around a lot. Just sayin' it might work for you.
