is there a way just to root and enable unknow sources without unlock and s off
If you follow bubby's method in development forums your phone will have stock firmware after you're done. Why wouldn't you want unlock and s-off anyway?

I've read and googled everything i can and I'm honestly still very confused and need the communities help!
Just got myself the one x with ROGERS, and yes I'm on stock rom 1.73
I'd like to flash a custom ROM...simple enough but the process seems confusing.
Here's what i understand i should do so far..
1. since I'm already locked (bootloader locked) i can just flash to 1.85 RUU..
2. Once i somehow find a way to do that...i need to unlock the bootloader from htcdev.com
Install CWM..by one click or maybe the adb method..
3. Or was it root first and then CWM...??
4. Install ROM..if you can figure out the instructions on that..
I need some serious help..the most detailed instructions possible...
Cheers and i appreciate all the help i can get.

Skip the first step. 1.85 is unrootable at the moment so if you try and flash using the 1.85 RUU you're screwing yourself over for the latter steps. Use the One-Click Root (search for tut) and root your device on the 1.73. Then you want to do the rest.
I belive you are mistaken. I from 1.73 root and bootloader unlock can be achieved. Then fastboot oem lock through command line, flash 1.85, unlock the bootloader again, and flash cwm. then you can flash superuser and you have root on 1.85. Right now if you want to flash custom roms 1.85 base is the only option. There are threads in the development section with tools and instructions on how to do this process.

You cannot unlock your bootloader though without your phone being rooted, and if you update to 1.85 you're stripping away your root privileges. Maybe I'm mistaken, but that's how I've understood it.
This is exactly what I'm trying to avoid... all this confusion...

You can't directly unlock or root 1.85 yet, the only way you can is if you already have a super-CID from before you upgraded. Follow the tutorial on how to do that, then unlock your bootloader using HTC Dev, then flash your recovery with ClockWorkMod, then install SuperUser using ClockWordMod. That's the only thing that will work to get you what you want on 1.85

That's exactly what I said. It is a roundabout way to root, but it is the only way. And it works.
He has a Rodgers phone so he can unlock the bootloader without needing to mod anything but i think he still needs to change the cid so that he can flash 1.85
Ok, I've seen many threads about my same questions but I haven't come up with a full answer.
I am completely stock and I want to simply gain root access (while keeping the official HTC rom), but hiding every proofs of unlocking ("RELOCKED", etc.),
From what I have understood, the procedure to take is the following:
1) unlock the bootloader, flash a recovery, install superSU: the guide is in Hasoon2000's AllinOne Toolkit thread.
2) gain SuperCID following this guide.
3) S-OFFing using Facepalm method.
4) getting back the "LOCKED" mark in bootloader following this guide.
My questions are:
a) am I forced to install a custom recovery in order to gain root access? I'd prefer not to install it, since I'd like to keep as closest as possible to stock.
b) is the linked guide for SuperCID still good? It's from May 2012 but I haven't found anything newer. Just to be sure...
c) do I need to relock before resetting the lock status flag as per number 4?
d) how can I get rid of the CID showing in the bootloader? If I set the CID back to what it was before SuperCID will it go away?
Thank you so much! If we can answer to these problems, this could become a good starting thread for other users too!
1) No, but it is the easiest method.
2) Yes, it's still valid.
3) Might work either way, but I'd recommend that you're unlocked.
4) S-OFF does that. If you S-ON again, it won't show.
Thanks usaff22!
About the recovery, is there a link to rooting without custom recovery? I haven't been able to found anything. If there is some documentation I'm willing to try.
Edit: did you mean the sideloading via "fastboot boot C:\recovery.img" method? As far as I have understood this allows me to boot into a temporary custom recovery without permanently changing the default one.
Do you think it's safe?
What are the chances of bricking your device?

I'm trying to understand this.
Usaff22, what were you referring to when you said that you could install superSU without a custom recovery?
Thanks.
Hi.. Sorry about my english
I revert my HOX to stock for warranty porpuses, and now want to root and s-off again, but before I get it back to warranty I installed RUU 4.1.1 with 3.18 so I want to do the precedure again
I'm trying to do this
Set super cid, but it fails. I think is because is the second time that I do this, since I have done before when root for the first time and now I have ATT cid... So I want to know if I can Root without unlock the bootloader, only wanna do this:
1. install TWRP (but the question is, Can I do this without unlock the bootloader?)
3 root
3. set super cid
4 S-off
Is this possible or do I need to unlock the bootloader, but since can't do the super cidhow will I do it?
Thanks a lot
Thanks
You need to unlock the bootloader, without that you can't do anything. You need to follow the 3.18 root exploit.

You have the sequence wrong.
Temp root, SuperCID, unlock bootloader, then install TWRP. Same as when you rooted before, except this time you need a new root exploit since you are now on 3.18.
All the resources you need are on my Index thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237
Also, are you sure the phone is s-on now? Depending on what was done during warranty service, it might still be s-off. Or did you make S-on yourself?
Thanks, it works
just did it,
now I'm going for s-off and will be ready
Thanks for your help
Hello everyone,
I recently purchased an AT&T HTC One X and I want to unlock bootloader and eventually root the phone. After some reading and following a few tutorials I am stuck. I just want to clear a few things up. First i followed htc AIO toolkit tutorial to unlock my htc through htcdev but error came up. I read further and saw people mentioning that I need to have s-off to unlock bootloader. I am just a little confused and would appreciate if someone would guide me in the right direction as to what steps to take to accomplish me unlocking bootloader and rooting my phone and maybe in the future to flash some custom roms.
Locked
evita s-on
I do apologize if this has been asked before
You do not need s-off to unlock bootloader. Get supercid then unlock bootloader, then gain root, then optional but recommend gain s-off. For us to help you need to give the current firmware of your device. To do this, restart your phone and hold down the volume down button until you are in the bootloader screen. Give the info you see at the very top.
My phone info is as follows
Locked
Evita PVT SHIP S-ON RL
Hboot-2.14.0000
I'm assuming you have 3.18 with that stock hboot but double check in settings to be safe. If you are 3.18 just follow the steps on how to gain supercid/unlock/root for 3.18. You can go to the FAQs stickied here for getting you to the right direction.
yes my Software number is
3.18.502.6710RD
for 3.18 I first need to get supercid/unlock before I can root? Are those the steps I need to take?
Yes in that order
To be more specific, you need to use the 3.18 root method to get temp root which also gets you SuperCID. Just any SuperCID method won't work. Click the Everything Evita link in my signature, within that resource thread navigate to the root section and click on the 3.18 root method link and follow those instructions. Once that's done you can go to htcdev and unlock your bootloader, then install TWRP 2.6 recovery.

Can anyone refer me to a how to for how to go about flashing this rom on a 100% stock phone? Every guide I look at says before starting this you must s-off first, must root first, must unlock bootloader first which is confusing. Is there an all in one guide available for doing this?
With my GS3 it was much simpler, just unlock bootloader, flash recovery/root/ROM and go.

You need s-off because on Vzw HTC you can't unlock bootloader with s-on via htcdev cause Vzw blacklist it. So their for you need s-off to unlock thru there. If you use sunshine which is a app you run very simple that will s-off an unlock your bootloader then you can just flash a recovery an flash SuperSU for root an then flash any ROM you want.
