[Q] Data consumption app? - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone!
I'm looking for a data consumption monitor app to know how much data i already downloaded/uploaded with the 3G...? To avoid suprises when the operator bill comes at the end of the month...
Thanks to all!

Would be great, I feel that my Focus just waste a lot of MBs from the data connection

no current feature in the phone shows this, and no APIs exist for an app to be created for this.
at present the only way to know is by checking with your carrier. most large carriers have a website which you can log into and check how much you're using.

I am on at&t and it shows the data used in at&t mywireless application.

My local carrier also indicates the data used, but with a 15 minutes delay.
Also it's different to check the carrier value than the real device counter

that and carriers tend to charge by the block, rather than literal count. for example, i'm on vodafone and they charge in blocks of 50kb. yes that's huge, but checking my bill, i've seen the data usage at one time and it says it's like 6 hours, some are even longer, so i don't mind then if it's a 50kb block charge.

No multitasking, so no. Not possible. Check back in Octiber, though, and see if Mango is out and Microsoft allows something like this to run in the background...

[APP] Tomorrow's Gas Price Today (Toronto-GTA Only)

Hi all,
For those familiar with TGPT (http://tomorrowsgaspricetoday.com/), I have written a small app that will check the site for updates and notify you of new prices. It also stores the prices in a DB so you can view the history.
At the moment it only works for Toronto-GTA because I live here and wrote this for me.
This is nothing fancy, it just works.
You can download it here.
Thanks.
cool, a small widget would make this even better
nice! thanks for sharing.

Originally I planned on making a widget. But then after I got the notification going I didn't think there was much point to a widget. Since I don't need it taking real estate on my screen when I already know the price from the notification. And once there is a new price, another notification will be generated.
I will try this out! Thanks!!
good stuffs! thanks!
Great start, just installed. Thanks!

This site you list is different than the one for Toronto. The Toronto site shows only a single price since almost all stations in the area are the same price. But your site shows prices for each location.
What exactly would you want to be notified of?
Damn, this kicks butt. This will serve me well when I forget to check the site before leaving work and shut down my computer. THANKS!

I think an extension for the Navigation app that show's the gas prices based on your location. It's rare, but sometimes you can find cheaper gas in different parts of a city
awesome, now just hook the rest of us canadians up please. This would be great in montreal.

Might be a problem with lock 2.0? Can you try uninstall lock 2.0 and see if the screen still wakes?
Also, TGPT doesn't do anything every couple minutes. Unless you have the debug to always notify and force update every 5 seconds. Even then I don't purposely wake the screen other than creating a notification and toast.
Yeah if go to origional lock it doesnot wakeup but see tgpt running in task manager which should not the case. I check price, kill the app, it starts again in a min also i get error when restart phone for force close tgpt app
I'm using version.1 is there new version which i can download?

crimsondr, I gotta say that I've been using this app close to since you released it, and it has been working great for me being a fellow Ontarian. I did come across one MINOR issue/bug that I never have before, only because the stars (and time) aligned it as such.
I had my Desire connected to my PC in Disk Drive mode, thereby disabling access to the SD card. TGPT tried to fire a scheduled update (once every 12 hours, which is great btw), but couldn't read it's DB from the SDcard, and threw up a Force Close error.
While it's not a huge issue because you have to have your phone in Disk Drive mode when TGPT performs an update, I just think it might be better to have the .db file on the Internal Memory of the device, especially as seeing how mine is currently 4kb in size. This should get around the exception when the SD card cannot be accessed, thereby keeping TGPT from throwing FCs.
Just thought you'd like to know since it's something that doesn't happen very often, but still does cause an issue!
Thanks again for your work and effort in dev'ing this quick, informative app!

Make sure you have Force update disabled in the settings. Other than that I don't know what is causing it and I do not have an x10a to test.

220MB of data used in less than 1 day. WHAT?

I just checked my t-mobile account and noticed I used 220mb of data since yesterday afternoon. How in the world is this possible if I was on wifi 90% of the time?
This sucks because I lose 4g speeds after 2GB of data.
are you sure that's only since yesterday & not from the start of your billing cycle?
I'm a brand new tmobile customer. Signed up yesterday.
Might be the T-Mobile app thing. There was somebody else complaining of high data usage and traced it back to this app.

I'll see if I can find the thread for you
Couldn't find the specific post/thread I was quoting, but I did find this, on Android Police:
Update: Don’t install this app until it gets an update – it will turn your GPS on every 10 seconds to update your location info, and won’t stop unless you Force Stop it from the Manage Applications screen. It was at 68% on my phone’s battery usage menu after 6 hours of doing little with my phone aside from checking e-mail sporadically. Yuck.

If it's using GPS to update your location every 10 seconds, that needs data. So I suspect, if you have this app installed, this could be your problem.
Get a data usage app that tells you what app is using how much data. If it shows that it is indeed this new T-Mobile app, there's your problem
From this post: http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/0...more-for-me-though-were-not-sure-why-exactly/

Just downloaded it. I'm not concerned with data (tho still want to read that post), I'm more concerned with why a lot of apps that I don't even use seem to always be on.
I think it's because they're stock apps and the default is always on. Once we have root, we should be able to get rid of them, and once we can flash ROMs, we can install stock HTC software, or Android Revolution HD
Just another reason to have s-off and root
Ok, after downloading traffic counter, it looks like it IS my fault for the excessive data usage.
It's showing the speed test app as using 130mb of data (since last reboot, which was yesterday). I admit I went a little crazy on the speedtest app yesterday and today (I've never had 4g speeds before switching to tmobile), but why does it use SO much data? I did quite a few tests, but still.
I tried that traffic counter app. XDA is killing my data 27mb. I spend to much time at this place.

As I'm on an unlimited data plan, I don't really care about data usage. I can go up to something like 5gb and my network (giffgaff, easily the best network in the UK) doesn't really care! The only thing I can't do is tether, but I can create a wifi hotspot for when I need to get on the internet on a bigger screen
If you're in the UK, I strongly implore you to take a look at giffgaff. Link in my sig

if you have a fast connection it needs to send/receiver bigger files to get an accurate account of what your speed it. if it only used like a 512KB file then it'd show your speed as 1028238234978234978MBps.

AT&T Customers Please Read

If you are one of the "lucky" ones who have received the following text message..
"ATT Free Msg: Your data use this month places you in the top 5% of users. Use Wi-Fi to help avoid reduced speeds. Visit www.att.com/dataplans or call 866344758 "
Please go to http://www.change.org/petitions/att-data-throttle#
and sign the petition to stop the throttling of the "top 5%" users.
I personally only used 4GB and received the message.
I signed a contract for unlimited data with AT&T . Not a "limited unlimited data plan". They state that once an "unlimited data" customer is among the top 5% of there data users they will "throttle" the users data speed. Apparently once a user reaches 2 gigabytes of usage they slow down the speed. NOT once they become one of the top 5%.
If you search the website for "AT&T" there are some other petitions you can sign as well. But the one above has the best letter and most signatures so far.
Thank you for your time. Good luck!
Seriously not trying to be an ass but ATT doesn't care.... I HIGHLY doubt they will make a change.
In the meantime I would go here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1474482 All credits to the op, The Jack of Clubs.
I always wondered what their criteria was for finding the top 5%. Do they measure it at the end of your billing cycle and compare it to other users? Or measure the amount of data you use so far at a specific date? Or gauge the rate that you are using (ie, 2gb/wk= 8gb/mo)? Obviously everyone has different billing periods, therefore data resets at different times of the month. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Or am I just overly confused?

It is worth a shot to try. What they are doing is wrong. How am I in the top 5% when I only used 4GB, some people have gotten the message using a lot less... and I see people on here claiming they are using 10+ GB!!! I am not going down without a fight... If nothing happens... then of course I will be left with no choice but to find a new carrier.
I can't seem to get that APN setting to work... I am going to use my data as normal and see when they decide to throttle me this month.

I honestly think they are just going randomly to the "unlimited" data users and sending them messages and throttling them.
Like I said above, I only used 4GB, some used less and got the message, and I see people on here claiming to use 10+ GB.
Let's not go down without a fight.. it might not go anywhere.. but hey at least we tried... and there is a chance something will happen if enough people voice there opinion....

They're sent to the top 5% in your area. In other words; it's extremely dependent on where you're at. If you live in a small town where there's maybe 300 people with an unlimited plan, chances are you're gonna be in that top 5% a lot sooner.
Personally, I think that scrapping the localisation on this would do a lot of good for AT&T's image. Right now, there's people who can pull 50+ GB of data off their plan, while others who pay the same amount get throttled at 1.2 GB. It's ludicrous. Having the throttling happen based on whether or not you're in the national top 5% of data users would make far more sense..
I'm in
I personally have not gotten the message, but I would surely feel as strongly about it as you do if I had. I most certainly would consider it to be an outrage, mostly because I use about the same amount of data as you do. (around 4gig)
Props also go out to those that have figured a way to bypass the throttling! I'm not currently running a custom rom at the moment, so I don't see all the options available to do so. I've made the settings that I found, but unsure of the impact.
Despite the outcome, this should be fought on principle alone.
On a side note I've often wondered how it is that AT&T is able to charge for 3 services when it all breaks down to sending a data packet? Voice = data packet. Text message = data packet. Data plan = data packet. In my mind this is also a travesty, unless I'm just blatantly wrong. I realize what's inside the packet may change, but in the end it's still a data packet. I imagine this is why all these companies have arisen providing unlimited everything plans for $50 a month, and I think I'm headed that way soon.

I understand its gauged locally, but how is it measured? Everyone is on a different billing period. Mine starts on the 1st while yours starts on the 15th. By the 30th, I've used 5gb and you've only used 2gb. How do they compare your usage with mine and get an accurate (I use that term loosely) estimation of who's in the top percentage at a specific time when they send you that text? The only thing that makes sense to me is them monitoring your usage after your period ends? Or unless it like what op said; random warning texts @ 2gb or so.

You honestly don't expect everyone else to use data the way you do. I use wifi whenever I can, which is as soon as I get home or when I'm in class. The remainder of the day I'm at my office, or driving around using maps/navigation, emails, browsing, Facebook, words with friends, etc. So I don't have wifi. And no, I'm not gonna hunt around for a Starbucks or Mc Donald's just to hook up to wifi that has lower speeds than my 3G; its just ridiculous.

In my opinion It's Stupid to stream any type of media while your away from your house on a Data connection! You know it's gonna use a ridiculous amount especially if your gonna sit there and stream HD videos over Data! Why wouldn't At&t have a right to throttle your usage, Pure waste. Using GPS and and other type of map software is a less of a waste. Most of you with 16GB sd cards and higher know better! Store all your music and videos on it, that's what its for. Facebook, Email, and some of your multiplayer games use **** for data, nothing barely gets wasted. With your facebook, email, and multiplayer games you shouldn't even go over 1GB of usage a month. Also Note for those sitting their listening to Pandora on their Data connection. Each song is between 3mb-6mb. How many songs do you listen too now multiply that and see how much your wasting.
i got this one month and at the time i was only at 1.4 gb! wtf

Nexus 5 on no data / low data plan.

Anyone here use their Nexus 5 on a prepaid cellphone plan that has no data or low data?
I am thinking about switching over to h2o's Unlimited Talk, Text and 500mb plan to save money and become less dependent on my cell phone. I find myself using about 5 GBS a month on straight talk but its nothing productive, just downloading the latest roms or downloading an app only to delete a few minutes later or checking facebook. I think I could get by fine just using wifi and then the 500MB to check email or use my GPS.
Thoughts?

For testing purposes?
Like you download an app just to see or to test, you can download a rom and flash it to test, right?
That being said, for the OP, not sure a low data plan will make you less "dependent" (maybe good for money), if you have access to wifi? You can always download all the last roms via wifi
It will depend of your real use apart downloading rom, maybe it will be enough with only GPS (again it depends the frequency of use, GPS can be a huge consumer of data ) and email...

You stated in your OP that you think you download and flash too much and you want to cutdown on your plan. If you download 5GB of data and its usefull its fine, but if you delete most of it its a waste of time. It was not my intention to say you have no life, as i don`t know you Lets keep it at this, i never attack or judge users, you can read all my posts if you want.

That being said, for the OP, not sure a low data plan will make you less "dependent", if you have access to wifi? You can always download all the last roms via wifi
It will depend of your real use apart downloading rom, maybe it will be enough with only GPS (again it depends the frequency of use) and email...

I mean dependent in terms of using the phone when I am out in about in public where wifi isnt available. I have no guilt about using my phone when I am sitting at home on the couch watching TV but it will deter the urge to browse the web when I am out with friends or something.

Telling someone they need to find a hobby usually implies that you think someone doesn't have a life.
PS it takes literally 5 minutes to download and flash the latest nightly of cyanogemod. I am not downloading a miillion different roms each month. Just staying up to date.
edit: also and saying "no offense" before saying something offensive isn't a hall pass to say something rude.
What's the issue here "Nexus 5 on no data / low data plan." or hobbies.....let's end the hobby discussion. Thanks
Only issue I can think of is that most of the Google Now voice commands seem to require an internet connection to work.

I am also on a limited data plan (400mb /mo) and find it kind of limiting. What i use is DS battery saver which turns off your data while your screen is off and turns it on every 30/45/60min for updates. It saves me some data and some battery so it's a win/win for me. I tend to limit my data navigation to mail/facebook and messaging apps and keep the cat gifs/videos for wifi/pc.
Another app you can try is onovo extend (it compresses the internet traffic trough their servers) but i found it a bit fiddly (never know if it's working or not and need to check it constantly) and i suspect it interferes with some apps (had a problem with my maps app but dont quote me on that).
Opera browser also compresses traffic for reduced data use.
Other than this, only your common sense and self control can bring your data use down. Being prepaid can't you buy more data anytime if you need it ?

Anyone here use their Nexus 5 on a prepaid cellphone plan that has no data or low data?
I am thinking about switching over to h2o's Unlimited Talk, Text and 500mb plan to save money and become less dependent on my cell phone. I find myself using about 5 GBS a month on straight talk but its nothing productive, just downloading the latest roms or downloading an app only to delete a few minutes later or checking facebook. I think I could get by fine just using wifi and then the 500MB to check email or use my GPS.
Thoughts?

I don't download much but still using 2gb a month - maybe go for 3 gig and see how that goes? 500mb is nothing nowadays.
I think unless you actually turn the data off, you'd struggle to stay under a 500GB a month allowance. Having seen what mine does on a day when I Fine really use it, id be concerned. You'd definitely need to tweak your sync settings and/or turn off data. Possibily even use opera browser or similar to compress your web pages.
Managing that plan sounds like too much of a chore

I have a voice and text only plan using WiFi when I need the type of downloads you describe. If I want to watch videos or listen to Music I carry a Meenova OTG micoSD card reader (check the N5 accessories section) and preload the files I need. I consider most of the data plans to be a huge consumer ripoff and am not willing not shell out the bucks for a minor convenience. My comments are definitely personal choice and there are so many WiFi hot spots around the impact of not always having Internet access hasn't hit me yet.

I think this comes down to region too (pricing I mean).
In the UK you can get 200 minutes, 5000 texts and truly unlimited data for £12.90 a month (sim only). £15.90 if you want 600 minutes.

Why do you have to download ROMs and apps over 3G? Don't you have wireless at home?
I can easily survive a month with 500MB, while checking my e-mail a few times a day (about 10 e-mails over 5 syncs), checking a few tens of articles over feedly and reading at least 5-10 of them, playing 8 Ball Pool (by Miniclip) at least on hour, using Waze for at least half an hour and other occasional searches. I only install apps over 3G on rare occasions (once a week at most), and when I cannot wait until I get home. And sometimes I'm wondering how could I wisely use more data, not to pile it up at the end of the month.
But that's just me...
Both me and my wife manage fine on a 250mb monthly plan. Over 3G we only need the odd update for the weather app and the usual Whatsapp photos and videos, from other family members. Whilst the photos and vids do consume most of that meagre allowance it still works out fine. The videos will get downloaded when at home and using the wi-fi connection.
Knowing that we are "restricted" on a tight data plan (but managing fine) it does tend to discipline me to no longer bother about using the phone more "frivolously", in terms of data usage, and I suppose when I'm at home I'll use my tablet or PC, much bigger screens etc.
Neither of us feel restricted in our use, and it works out much cheaper, but it does focus the attention away from the phone and the habitual data usage which was neither important nor needed.

[Q] Excessive data usage on Verion

hey guys. i seem to have a problem with my verizon data usage on my ultra. it seems like in the last couple months, i have been using data faster than i normally do. i have a 2 gig data plan, and i keep track of my usage closely because thats all i have to work with and i dont want to get any overage fees. i usually use data for basic browsing, social media, and some streaming music. this weekend, i was streaming some radio. i used almost 1 gig of data in one hour of streaming. before, i was able to stream over 4 hours of radio and never came close to using 1 gig. i would usually use less than .5 gigs while streaming. i have now used up all of my data in about 1.5 weeks where it would normally take me all 4 weeks. it seems like they are charging me for more data than i am actually using. i have done some research and it seems like im not the only one with the problem. i think they are doing it to either get money from overage fees or to free up their network to keep the speeds up. i have a feeling its a combination of both. is anyone else on here having a similar problem?
I am still unlimited, so I never worry about that.
Have you taken any app updates or installed new apps that would possibly use data? Maybe system updates? I believe the system updates for this phone are around 850-900 MB
Going into Settings > Data Usage; what is eating your data there?
i have not installed any new apps that would be using my data. all of my apps just updated, but they were over wifi. i have it set to only update over wifi. i have had no system updates because ive been on 4.4.4 for a few months. it shows tunein radio used .94gb, youtube at 274mb, facebook with 144mb. i was using tune in radio for about an hour and used close to 1gb. i have never used that much in such a short time period. i am seriously considering switching carriers because my contract is up and i dont want two more years of this crap.

May just be tune in genuinely using that much. Go pick up a tmobile prepaid sim and pop it in your phone. Try them out.

I can use a t-mobile card in a verizon phone?
Also I went to the verizon store to see what they would say. They said being in a lte/xlte area will eat data faster. To met that just doesn't sound right. I've used date in lte areas and have never used that much data at once. I still think there is something else going on here.

Rule #1) Verizon reps have way less knowledge than you. They are nearly brain dead when it comes to actually providing support for their phones.
Yes you can pop in a nano T-Mobile sim prepaid or postpaid, set the phone to global, and off you go.
Well that would be all good if I had tmo service. The only reason I have verizon is that they r the only one with service in my area

Check the tune in settings, maybe an app update defaulted the app to high quality streaming, when before you were on mid/low quality

I already checked for that and I did not see an option for stream quality.
ok, i did some more digging. i found that the stream in was using had a bitrate of 64kbps. over and hour this translates to .003gb or 26mb. its says in my data usage that tunein radio used .94gb which at a 64kbps rate would be over 300 hours of radio. something is definitely not right but i don't know what.

last idea... is your billing cycle window set appropriately in the data use section of the phone? If you check on myverizon web portal does it also reflect the same data numbers?

Ya, the billing cycle window is set right. I don't know who to blame here, verizon or tunein radio? Maybe it's just a fluke this month and maybe would be better next month.

but i take it you are relying strictly on what the phone is telling you... Did you verify the phone was counting right by checking on the My Account section on vzw website? If the VZW site reflects the same thing as your phone, I would at least then be able to say with some certain confidence tunein could be the culprit.
If you get a different reading from VWZ's site, then there most likely was some kind of bug/glitch in the data use app on the phone.
My verizon account says the same thing. I still don't think it's the radio app. It's either something with verizon or possibly the phone might be eating more data than it needs, but I don't think it's the app. I will know if it's the phone or not when I upgrade to a note 4 in a couple weeks.
Are you sure you exited out of your radio app? I know I have left a stream playing before when I thought I closed it.
