[Q] S-off vs radio s-off - HTC Inspire 4G

What is the difference between 'regular' s-off and radio s-off? is it just two different areas of nand that are locked separately? If that is the case, why would you ever want to only unlock one and not all?
I assume this is all basic stuff for the HTC vets, but the inspire is my first HTC phone.
Thanks

jokes, jokes.
really though, from the first result...
SPL/Bootloader/Radio/Bricking Phones:
SPL / Bootloader is like BIOS on a computer. At least I think of it that way. SPL can be updated! SPL comes as either Security-On of Security-Off (S-ON/S-OFF).
Note: It is my understanding that radio will boot first, followed by other systems. So it is IMPORTANT that your radio image/version will work with your SPL image/version. This is the one and only reason for phones being bricked. You can not brick your phone by flashing a ROM or Boot image or recovery image. Once you flash the wrong radio for the SPL, the only known method of recovery is to send the phone back into HTC for repair.

LOL, no, that is funny. I need to bookmark that.
I had searchedboth Google and the forums. I understand that s off is turning off Sig checking on updates. More wanted to know why there is separate soff and radio soff.
Sent from my Inspire '4g'.

There's S-Off and then ENG S-Off. The latter allows you to flash radio.img.

[Q] Risks and Rewards of an RUU?

I've looked in every RUU thread, but I can't seem to find a specific answer to 3 of my questions about them.
1) What are the risks to using an RUU? Do I risk bricking my Sensation if it fails at some point?
2) Will an RUU make my S-OFF Sensation become S-ON again, and if so, will the exploit I used (revolutionary.io, combo of alpharev & unrevoked) appear in the HBOOT screen?
3) In the unlikely event I need to send my Sensation in for warranty work, will an RUU be enough to return it to a serviceable state?

1) Providing you dont yank the cable out at any point there are no risks flashing your phone with an RUU as this is the official method to update your phone.
2) No, an RUU will not make your phone S-On again you will need to follow the command explained in the Revolutionary post. Your HBoot will be replaced using the RUU to the stock therefore Revolutionary will not appear in Hboot.

[Q] risk about s-on

hi
sorry for noob question.... I've got a vodafone branded sensation... What exactly I risk if flash a ruu that it's not the correct one to return s-on??
If you're S-OFF without modifying your CID, it won't work, and it may possibliy brick your phone. If you're S-ON, it won't work.
Just flash the correct ruu, read the guides close if you're returning to S-ON, I've seen some people bricking their phones after running the ruu

I'm s-off, without modifying CID... Which is my correct ruu? The one I had when bought the phone? The one I have now (I'm stock to vodafone last update)?
yo dude, sorry to butt in, but.. do you happen to be in australia?

[Q] Are some radios better than others ?

Hi guys
I'd like to know if there are some radios that have any advantages like better stability/battery life over the others.
My phone is currently on 20.4801.30.0822U_3822.10.08.04 with Hboot 2.00.002. I know for Desire XS, the Dev recommends 20.76.30.0835U_3831.19.00.110 and 2.00.2002 or 7.00.1002 but to attain this, I must flash the ICS RUU, which I'm not keen on(I've heard it has bugs). Are there any equivalent radios to the one for Desire XS or any radio better than my current one ?
My phone is currently 2.00.002, HTCDev Unlocked, S-On. I plan on relocking, flashing an RUU with a 0.98 bootloader, using Revolutionary to unlock and S-Off and then flash another radio+Hboot if I must. Will I need to flash this with an RUU or can it be flashed in fastboot on its own ?
Sorry for asking so many questions in one post, but I've been struggling to figure out a way around this for a few weeks now.
Any direction as to get the best combination of Hboot+Radio would be appreciated.
hboot as well as radio can be flashed via fastboot without installing ruu
I was looking also to change the radio on my Desire S; for now, I didn't to it yet (it was to solve problems with 2G-3G on CM10, but probably this has nothing to do with radio).
I have read on this forum that there are no rules to know which radio works better: it depends on the network you are using. Some radio's will word better for you, but not necessarily for others.

Engineering Hboot and GSM

Do we really need one? Are there any out there we can get our hands on :]
Never got to use an Eng hboot on my old phone, want to see what they can do..
From what I understand, we can do most of the stuff eng hboots do currently, like flashing a splash, radio from fastboot, etc. ?
and instead of making another thread.. Can we use S-off to carrier unlock? :\

(Solved)What is S-Off

I am merely posting this here for all those considering to go S-Off but haven't found the courage for it yet or just aren't sure what S-Off actually is. So to ease your minds a little bit I wish to explain S-Off.
For starters, S-Off and root ARE TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THINGS!
HTC has been securing their phones by locking the internal flash memory (NAND or eMMC)(eMMC in our case) to stop it from being written to, unless the file being flashed is signed by a private key only known to HTC. This is controlled by a flag (@ secuflag) and is identified as the device being S-ON. Telling the HBoot the device is Security Off (S-OFF) stops this check for the key, and allows us to write anything to any partition, which is what we are aiming for.
There are actually two levels of S-OFF. The Bootloader (HBoot) and the Radio. Getting S-Off on the HBoot gives us everything we need, but doesn't actually turn off the @ secuflag which is set in the radio - instead, the HBoot ignores it and therefore thinks it is S-Off, but this is not TRUE S-Off. It is possible to flash a HBoot that believes the Radio is set to S-OFF, as the HBoot is responsible for setting that flag.
Once the HBoot on the phone is S-OFF, we can write to all the partitions and basically do whatever we want, but it is possible to go one step further. Flashing a radio that is S-OFF and actually setting the @ secuflag to S-off gives us 100% total access to every part of the phone and it's software, as it becomes network unlocked allowing you to use any SIM and also allows you to flash a ROM from any carrier (known as Super CID). It also makes it practically impossible to permanently loose root no matter what you flash. Once you have radio S-OFF, it makes it much easier to flash new HBoots and ROMs even if you flash something that is locked down tight.
Setting the Radio to S-Off is not necessary, and gaining S-OFF on the HBoot is more than most people will ever need. Radio S-Off is just the last step of the puzzle, but it is worth noting that you can permanently brick your phone if flashing a radio or a HBoot, if either of these go wrong you will end up with a shiny expensive paper weight so there is risk involved. If this helped you in any way then feel free to click on the thanks button. Meanwhile, happy hunting!

To determine if you are S-OFF via HBoot or Radio you can do one of two things.
1: Go into fastboot and type
Code:
fastboot oem readsecureflag
If you get secure_flag with the number zero then congrats - you are radio S-Off
If you get secure_flag 3 then I am sorry, you are not radio S-Off. - your modded HBoot is ignoring the radio in regards to @ secureflag.
2: (I don't recommend this lol)
You can flash a stock HBoot and then reboot your bootloader. If you see S-On after already having S-Off then this means you were S-Off via HBoot. However, I would like to note that some HBoots are written out to prevent themselves from being over written so S-Off isn't lost, but this prevention does not always work and is usually patched by HTC relatively quickly.

Another note... If you do not have radio S-Off then the following fastboot command will not work nor will it bring you back to S-On:
fastboot oem writesecureflag 3
Reason for this is because you are already S-On, but its being masked by your modded HBoot. So in this case, flash a stock HBoot and that will substitute for the failing command in fastboot
