Gingerbread very bland compared to Froyo? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got the Nexus S and my other friends have the Galaxy S. Is it just me or is Gingerbread really bland compared to Froyo? I looked at their phones menus and settings screens, notifications, and other UI stuff and theirs are all colorful and my Nexus S is just black and white...

All of that color is not Froyo, its TouchWiz. Gingerbread is actually quite a lot prettier and more snazzed up than Froyo, trust me. TouchWiz has a lot of pretty icons but its really a load of bloatware.

Galaxy S phones have touchwiz UI that's why it looks different..

The nexus s comes with a "vanilla" type of android. It is a developers phone. Almost all versions of android are modifications of this system. A good example of that is HTC sense.

Ah ok. Cuz I really like that colored icons in the Android Settings and the power widgets in the notifications. Kinda sux how gingerbread is so bare for me. Also disappointed in gingerbreads phone book and calendar. I like how theirs have tabs for grouping.

then return it for the galaxy?

You can wait the Galaxy S2
It is much nicer and more powerful than Galaxy S.
But yeah, if you want Google phone, then Nexus S is the best Google phone right now.

Yeah GB has no special stuff on it its PURE android, no fancy stuff to slow it down.
think of it as a Middle to high end PC on windows Vista running with areo and all that CPU intensive disabled running the classic windows look.
A No-Nonsense phone, and a dream for devs

Bland as compared to what? 2.2 and below stock? Because that was just white with black letters. That was bland.

Because we know vista is bloated with fancy stuff ( comparable sence / touchwhiz)

A more correct analogy would be stock Android is Ubuntu(latest version, in Beta) and TouchWiz is Linux Mint(previous version) running a bad filesystem.
In this case Linux Mint would come with more pre-installed codec's and a better looking UI. Also in this case there isn't as many Developers for Ubuntu, so you might not get a better looking UI or codec's unless you do it yourself.
The performance difference is minimal but noticeable. It obviously looks better and does things the new version can't and but is missing some features of the latest version of Android(NFC).

Does anyone else hate Sense UI?

I'm sure I'll get flamed for this because it seems everyone around here is in love with Sense UI, but it drives me nuts. Especially that stupid Genius button. I now have to waste an entire row of my home screen with the Google search widget.
I...

Seriously, I can't stand it. I LOVE the hardware on this phone but am thinking of returning it and buying something used and rootable so I can install a vanilla version of Android.
Despite the facts that I would never use the physical keyboard and would rather have the front facing camera and the faster processor, I almost bought the G2 just for the clean version of Android.
Just curious if anyone else feels this way. I swear, if I could just double the RAM on my original MT3G, I would be satisfied to overclock it to 614 or so and go on my merry way.
I feel your pain.
I'm not a fan of any UI overlays, they just don't seem to add much. Most of their features are already part of Android.
I'm leaning to purchasing the MT4G, just waiting for full root first. Pretty sure I'm going to drop some coins into the pot for the devs next pay day.
1. G2 and mt4g have simlar processors, just that the g2 is underclocked. So they are capable of the SAME SPEEDS.
2. Sense, especially expresso on the mytouch, is absolute garbage! Its so ugly I can't believe people actually like it. It looks waaay to much like an iphone...only uglier.
3. I honetly don't care about ffc, if I need to video chat, then I can just use the one on the back of the g2.
4. Keyboard on the g2 is brilliant. Add in the fact that it comes with swype makes it ridiculous. Sorry you don't like physical keyboards, but I absolutely love this one. By far one of the p-keyboards...ever.
5. Screen on the g2 is slcd, unlike the mt4g which has an absolutley crap screen, reminds me of the screen on the motorola cliq.
6. G2 is amazing, sorry you made the wrong choice, should def switch back

All good to know. I never said I don't like physical keyboards. In fact I really like the one on the G2.
I just don't think I'll end up using it because touchscreen typing is faster/easier for me.
It's ok. You can install another launcher to make it look different. The genius button, however, is a whole different matter. There is no way to override its behavior, so that really bothers me.
I hear you! I hate sense as well and it reminds me of Windows Mobile to much!!! I just use LauncherPro which is great!
I like it. I'd rather not see all the crazy widgets that it ships with however. I do like that it's prettier than stock Vanilla. I mean, I want to kill myself looking at some of the stock apps. I'd just as soon send them back to 2004. And, having that ugly Android robot thingy peeking out from the corner? Talk about tacky!

Are you kidding me? Sense, especially expresso, is one of the ugliest UI's I've ever seen. But if you like it....to each their own. I actually like what android was meant to look like. If I wanted that look I would have went with an iphone...

Stock android is boring and lacks the great builtvin features that HTC Sense has. The menus, widgets, and built in functionality name HTC Sense more fun to use for me. I doubt many of you G2 owners have even used a myTouch 4G. The UI is a lot more polished than stock android 2.2.

Well, coming from the Vibrant, I like it much better. The Vibrant's UI was little Fisher-Price for my tastes. This just seems a little more fresh, almost business-modern. Why does everyone come back to the iphone when this topic arises anyway? We're here to stay, so let's just drop the iphone comparison. There is almost unanimous agreement that the iOS offers one of the greatest UI experience bar none. It's too bad there are too many glaring omissions in its functionality. So, to compare this UI to the iphone's isn't a bad thing in my book. I mean, if this Android phone were encased in an iphone's garments, complete with a skin that looked exactly like the iphone's, I would be no more apt to go with an iphone. To suggest that you would points to your obsession with that device, no?
I understand that, hence why if you love the iphone UI, you should go get one. If you don't, stick to a UI that does not resemble iphone ie anything not sense...

Personally I like the functionality that expresso brings to the table. Its like an ugly girl that has a great package who gives a great blowjob in return atleast that's how I see it.

First, I don't even think this looks remotely like iOS, let's be reasonable. OK, perhaps a *tad* bit more than stock or TouchWiz. Secondly, I won't hide my affection for the iOS's UI. It's very nice. But, your reasoning still alludes me. Why "should I get one" if I like its UI only? Android is infinitely more customizable and inherently more powerful and scalable - not to mention, it's a lot more open-source-y. I make my decision based on the whole package, not simply a phone's UI. While important, it's not the end all. So, can we stop the whole childish "if you love the iphone UI, you should go get one" bit? Really. While it may not be apparent, you're giving the iphone more credit than it deserves by bringing it up in the context of an Android overlay.
Preference. Sense has a huge following and for good reason. Not just the widgets but browser functionality and mail pinch to zoom. The cut, c.c.p. and dictionary search, language translation is nice to have. If stock Android had the, desk clock, browser, mail pinch to zoom, FM radio, wifi calling, Flip weather clock, bookmark widget and ffc, I wouldn't mind vanilla. Just that HTC brings nice functionality that many of us prefer. All you have to do is venture over to Nexus development and check out Evil D's following and the EVO and DINC, Desire and you will pretty much see there is a huge market for the Sense UI. If you don't like it or think it is ugly then by all means have you some Cyanogen or Enom or MIUI. Coming on here crying about your preference is kinda lame and retarded.

Install launcher pro, and enjoy having the best of both worlds. The sense launcher sucks (in my opinion), and launcher pro gets rid of that problem. Then the things that the sense UI does better (like the lock screen) you still have. I hate sense, and after minor tweaks and mods, like my MT4G way better than my G2.

Mt4g sense is still running smart one, so you loose all that great ram while at the same time running launcherpro. Meaning a severe decrease is resources.

I have always been a vanilla Android fan, I always bought vanilla handsets and the OS updates, and stock features were more than enough for me.
However, I was open and gave mySense a shot on this phone and I have been impressed so far. The contacts, gallery, music, alarm clock and several other apps are so much more fully featured and integrated than I thought. Also, if you pick the right theme, widgets and wallpaper combination, the UI can really be beautiful. I think I would have a hard time going back to stock android now.
For example, I really miss having the vibrate slider on my lock screen like my Nexus had, but with this phone I get a seperate lock screen wallpaper for more customization and I can read text messages and emails on the lock screen. The trade off works for me.
Obviously it's a matter of personal preference, but bashing someone for liking a skin is idiotic. I have an iPod Touch, and I cannot stand iOS, I think it's hard to understand, boring and limited, but most of the world thinks it's the greatest OS on the planet. I don't bash iPhone owners for liking it. Like most things, you just have to have an open mind, give it a shot and maybe you will be surprised.
I prefer mySense now for what it can do, but I will jump to the next great handset in another year or so and be perfectly happy. If that phone happens to be vanilla or sense I have no idea, but I would be cool with either.
I don't mean to sound rude, but is installing Launcher Pro really that hard?
I'm just waiting to being able to install miui on this phone. Expresso sense is not THAT bad... i could do without some bloatware but it doesn't bother me much. I happily retired my nexus and traded in the bulky g2 for this phone.

Nexus Prime w/ ICS Video

Just thought I shared
I never thought I'd say this about a Samsung device, but I honestly can't wait for this phone. I'd like to think that with Google holding the reigns, the Nexus Prime will not have any of the issues that plagued the Vibrant.
Have to say stock ICS looks absolute pony. Horrid colours, crap looking launcher. Google made a BIG mistake going with Samsung for their flagship phones IMO
Coupled with the fact their putting the launch back makes it a loss in my book
Au contraire, i kinda like that user interface. It's purely the new google style and i hope that we can also have it on our sensation. My whishes are for the CM8, but i also hope the Cyanogen Team will improve the camera in their next release... The actual one is almost crap

Probably the Sense UI is the most good looking among others but i like also the stock android style, it's minimalist and with some fancy touches here and there.. Pretty practical if i can say, where sense sometimes is too exhagerated.. Both the worlds have pro's and cons..
NB: i was talking only about the ui... all the sense apps and integrations are basically perfect. I could not live without HTC camera app and friend stream on my sensation

NS4G Q&A???

Forgive me if i am mistaken but i am new to the NS4G(as im sure a few of u know) & did not see a Q&A for us but i have a question.
No disrespect but i come from Evo 4g & was curious Y there is very limited roms available for NS4G???
I've heard many a great reviews for the Nexus S but i have not seen any reason y??? My Evo was just as good, mayb even better compared to my now owned Nexus. Roms were a plenty, speed just as fast, better camera, etc...
Like i said i am new to the Nexus S 4g & still learning. But from my understanding the Nexus S was first???
I like the Nexus for its size, not as bulky, but whats size compared to usage?
I still have my Evo & consider giving my nexus to my wife for alot of reasons. I hear of this "so called" ICS update, but im sure the Evo will be sure to get it(rom)...
If u feel my opinion is wrong, PLEASE, feel free to share your thoughts.
Again I bring no disrespect just curiousity...
Thank you for your time & patience.

Most phones with manufacturer skins (sense, blur, touchwiz) the ROM makers are striving to create AOSP ROMs. We as Nexus owners already have this. The ROMS you see are mainly tweaks to AOSP with the 2 main exceptions being CM7 and MIUI.
So we don't need the same amount as the other phones. Quality over quantity in these parts Hope that helped and answered your question

Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA Premium App
Well I had an evo for a year and just got the nexus several months ago and I can say I would never go back. Here's my list of reasons:
1. The screen. I used to be a huge HTC fan, but after using a super amoled screen I don't think I could go back to an LCD. The blacks are so deep, contrast is great and color saturation is amazing.
2. The amount of ROM available is a huge deal for me. On a sense ROM I was lucky to have 200-300mb free for apps. The best I could do was with cyanogen @ 500mb. With my nexus I have about 1gb free space and I don't have to manage what apps I have installed (I usually have 160+ apps installed).
3. Graphics. The two phones might look the same on paper, but they are very different. The nexus is way better at playing 3d games than the evo. If you look in the market you will see the majority of gameloft games are not available for the evo, but they are all available for the nexus. Another example is my n64 emulator. On my evo games like star fox and banjo kazooie would be choppy and slow. They run very smooth on my nexus.
4. The camera is better on the nexus. Yes the evo might be 8mp, but its not about mp's its about the optics. The optics on the evo suck. My pictures were always grainy, and the colors were always washed out. Whereas the pictures on my nexus are smooth and have better contrast and color representation. Yes the camera on the nexus is not omg amazing but its way better than the evo (although I do wish the stock camera had touch to focus).
BUT there are some cons...
1. There is no HTC sense. I don't know what everyone means when they say vanilla android is better, it isn't.
The stock dialer sucks, no t9 dialing. The stock messaging app is ugly.
The stock launcher is crap (I have to load launcher pro just to make it useful)
Lack of any useful Widgets (no Facebook/friend stream, no calendar-the stock one is ugly, no useful clock)
The stock keyboard is okay, the sense one is way better.
The lock screen is useless (sense gives you a preview of your notifications)
Yeah I can, and have found apps and Widgets to fix most of my complaints dialer2, handcent, launcher pro, simple calendar, fancy Widgets, widget locker. But my point is that I shouldn't need too if stock android was so much better. Plus all those extra apps bog down the system and use up a lot of ram which leads me to my next point.
2. Lack of RAM. Yes the nexus has superior graphics performance, but that's because the GPU uses a lot of the RAM up, they should have put in a little more to compensate for it.
But despite my complaints, I'd still never switch back to my evo.

The Nexus S is guaranteed to be first (or at least in the first group) to receive an OS update with fully functioning roms like CM pretty quickly after, so all the ICS eye candy (and jellybean later and so on) will be on the NS first.
You can't compare sense to aosp. Oranges & apples. Sense roms use sense frameworks. If those phones were aosp phones, it would be exactly the same. Also the evo has 2 years of development behind it. Most of those roms are in the same boat. Pretty much you can either have an aosp rom , an aosp based rom, a sense rom or a modded sense rom, or a miui rom.

So, who want's to see some Sense 4.0 with ICS

I don't like it. HTC must have been high out of their minds to take Sense this far. The animations are unnecessary.
I agree, Im not really liking it. The dockbar, IMO, looks like garbage. All those animations seems like it lags the UI as well
the animation is nice. but i don't like the launcher, sense's 3.xx launcher is better that.
I like the animations. The dock and the actual device are ugly. Sucks. HTC messed up on this one. For sure il be getting the amaze instead now. I rather have sense 3.0 on android 4.0.

i honestly do like thgis sense. i mean sure the launcher is a bit iffy but i like it and if it gets ported to our phone i wont mind using it as a DD
O__o what happened????
Software: it doesn't even look like Sense anymore...
i agree, the animations, while nice, look like they hog a bunch of memory, and aren't necessary... if it lags on a device like that, imagine how it would run on our Glacier..LOL
Hardware: reminds me of the Galaxy Nexus, specially from the side lol
it doesn't look as pro and nice as the Sensation... i mean.. wow.. single LED light? the Sensation has two...
much rather get the Sensation instead.
quite disappointed... hope HTC changes it before the official release.
Eww ugly
I'm a Rom Flip Flopper
I was concerned that Sense 4.0 would look too much like previous versions and not allow enough of ICS' great UI to show through. The leaked video was a pleasant surprise!
I like the new status bar, clock/weather widget, and dockbar. All three are a nice change from previous versions which were pretty close to identical going from the Cupcake version of Sense that came out on the Hero all the way up to Sense 3.5 on the Runnymede and Rezound. Finally something different!
Like most people I did not at all like the needless animation in the Settings window, but I'd still be interested in running 4.0 on the MT4G or any future device.
Not a big fan of Sense in general, but it does seem HTC has gone overboard with this one. The phone itself looks pretty sleek though, wonder how cool it would be running AOSP ICS.
I haven't seen the video yet, I'm throttled, but judging by the comments. It's possible that it's just a beta or something, I'm just guessing.
If I helped, give thanks, if you please.

I thought it looked pretty cool. Cant wait to see a finished product
I could care less about the lag; it's the UI itself that annoys me. This has resource hog written all over it. And, Sense got uglier. All this resource rape is unnecessary; people have made exact replicas of Sense using images and other widgets, and it uses a ****lot less resources than Sense's framework (not to mention, the framework is modded to hell). HTC is just getting unnecessary now.
I think HTC should of just watered it down, a lot. Keeps beats and add universal support. Animations are nice so keep those, and have HTC Widgets, and apps and that's it. Stock ICS with minor tweaks.

All this resource rape is unnecessary; people have made exact replicas of Sense using images and other widgets, and it uses a ****lot less resources than Sense's framework (not to mention, the framework is modded to hell). HTC is just getting unnecessary now.

I'm gonna have to disagree with that. Sense has so many little touches are throughout the UI...far too many to list. There's no way to replicate the Sense experience with themes and widgets.
It's sort of like generic cola...it tastes ok and a little like real Coke, but there's no way to duplicate genuine ice-cold Coca-Cola Classic (or Pepsi ).

you're absolutely right.
people may have made "replicas" of it, but nothing beats the real thing.
just like how those people in China make those fake Android phones/iPhones and sell them
Looks great, but I'll always trade the looks of sense for the responsiveness and better battery life I get from an AOSP or CM build.
After looking at this, if sense REALLY turns out to be that way, I'm hoping some smart guy will make a rom for it without all the needless animations and resource hogging things.
I was really dissapointed that Touchwiz phones were more popular than Sense phones for 2011. I thought HTC would learn from that, but it seems they've gotten worse. I've been kind of excited for a Sense 4.0 rom but now im just probably gonna use my core droid 3.5 rom til my contract is up. If a nexus phone doesnt come to T-mobile... I will be forced to buy the only thing i see good enough....... a galaxy S 3 phone.
btw: I just saw this video today so im late XD.

Sharp's new UI would look gorgeous on one X

Just thought I'd share that. Who else thinks it would look gorgeous ported to our One X's?
I'm sure the all mighty devs will have something when it's released with source (if that happens.)
Looks very iPhone to me.
Of course, variety in ROMs and different UI experiences are always welcome, IMO (if somebody is willing to port).
I'd actually say more WP7 than iOS.
The tile system and lay out of widgets.

Yeah, I was more thinking the app icons (simpler, bigger icon than typical on Android). Look very much like ripoffs of the iOS look. But there is def some WP7 inspiration in there too, for sure.
I honestly do NOt think it would look gorgeous . It looks 10 years old.

Do you mean dated or immature/gimmicky?
Personally, I think it looks good visually, but from a usability standpoint I don't see how it's better than anything else out there. Plus, all the animations and gimmicky stuff is just a bit too overwhelming.
I'm a fan of open screens. This looks nice, but way to cluttered.
The icons are terrible. Why do most UIs have the fake glass and chrome and such?
If anything WP7 has been so refreshing because it doesn't clutter the screen up with tons of fluff. Stock ICS Holo theme is pretty decent with the blue highlighting and mainly black themes. Then again many Android apps ignore guidelines...
