wipe data/factory reset and then go to advanced and wipe dalvik cache then you're good to go.

i'm using a htc desire running on cm6.
when there are newer versions of cm and i would like to update to it.
what is the best way of achieving this without having to wipe the data/settings/etc?
if there is no such way, what can i do to backup settings/data/apps so that once i update to a newer cm , i can just restore my stuff?
what about Rom Manager Premium, theres an option to check for rom updates, would Rom Manager update your rom for you?(and keep all settings/data/etc?)

i use titanium backup and it works fine for me..
another option to back up your apps & system data is the nandroid backup on the recovery menu..
titanium backup requires busybox and for that to work i need to be nand unlocked.(which im not).
i always thought that nandroid backup will backup everythign to a state, so if i were to upgrade roms, and then use restore, wont it just revert me back to the previous state(not updated)?

You are correct. A nandroid restore will undo your update.
If you're upgrading to a newer release of CM6, you should be able to do it without wiping your data. Wipe dalvik and cache, flash the rom, and reboot. You'll have new featuers but all your old apps and data in tact.
Nandroid backup first for good measure though

Nope, dalvik and cache wouldn't even affect your settings.
The cache is the temporary cache used by the Android operating system, and the Dalvik-cache is the cache used by the Dalvik Virtual Machine. The only thing about wiping them is that the first boot will take longer as they rebuild their indexes and such.
Nine times out of ten, you'll be fine without wiping these. It's just generally considered "better" if you do.
Again, nandroid backup and try it out. If it doesn't work without wiping, restore back and wipe the caches.
I made a backup of my system in xRecovery earlier.
If I want to restore that backup, do I need to wipe anything?? Like cache?
Or do I only need to restore and just reboot?

the better thing that you can do its full wipe (factory reset, wipe data cache & dalvik)
when you flashed the backup do battery wipe...
full wipe its better because the apk´s need to zipalign again, do a new busybox, etcc...

Hello,
I've been using xRecovery for a while on my Xperia X8. I usually make a weekly backup and if the phone crashes then I restore completely the latest backup. This implies in restoring apps and data to the previous state as well.
Today I was taking a closer look at the "partial" recovery options of xRecovery, and saw that I can restore only the system.
Initially, I thought I had found the solution, as I would be able to restore only the system, and maintain the state of my apps and data.
However, your response above has confused me a bit.
So, if my Android's system crashes, I can't simply restore only the system, and keep the current app and data? What would then be the best way to restore the system and have the most recent data and apps?

hey guys yesterday i just flashed my sensation to S-OFF and flashed the rom to leedroid 3.0 for the first time so i have a question if i want to move to another rom what i gotta do first?Just reflash the other rom?or i need to do other things before i move to the another rom?

All you need to do is wipe your data and wipe the cache.
and Flash the other ROM's zip file!!

I´ve made a nandroid and then I do a Full Wipe.
wipe data, cache, AND dalvik cache in recovery
make a Nandroid backup first, Then wipe data, cache, Dav cache etc..there are many good tutorials on this site to help you on this... good luck!
From RECOVERY: Make a Nandroid Backup, wipe data, wipe cache, wipe Dalvik cache, and from there you can flash whatever ROM you want from your SD CARD.
Also i found that using ROM Manager, you can do a backup (like Nandroid Backup), it saves the files on the SD CARD and you can also copy the file to your computer (in case your something happens to your SD CARD for example), and whenever you want if you don't like the new ROM that you just installed or you are having problems with it, you can restore your previous ROM.
I've been using for some time now LeeDrOiD HD V3.3.3-Port-R5 Ginger Sense 2.1 and it's great.
Why wipe cache and dalvik as well? You guys realise dalvik cache is stored in the cache partition?

you don't have to wipe dalvik cache if you don't want to... you will just have to deal with any problems you run into

You should backup your rom before flashing, this way if anything goes wrong you can go back.
You should always wipe, wipe, wipe.
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache partition
Go to Advanced and wipe Dalvik Cache
After the wipe go back and Install zip from sdcard. After install I do another wipe on the Dalvik Cache then fix permissions. Remember Wipe, Wipe, Wipe.
so as long as I do that then I can install a rom over another and delete the previous one while doing so?

I recommend making several backups.
First, make sure you have Clockworkmod installed via nvflash. Then make a backup. Download the backup to your pc for safe keeping (just in case things go wrong).
Use Titanium Backup (free version works, but buy the full one if you like it). Use the batch feature to back up all user apps. Do not back up system apps.
When installing a new rom, especially roms that use different versions of android, you should wipe everything you can except the external sd card (where you keep your backups). Wiping "system" is important.

and it changed some things i dont like problem is i cant seem to undo the changes

i want to do this because i have this problem
i want to use the slide notification bar for quick brigthness changing it worked before but it shows this now:
lg p500 doesnt even have ambient light sensor so i dont know how automatic brightness would even be enabled:

I thought if you click wipe system in recovery it deletes your data? Please explain thoroughly so I can do is safely and DON'T lose data

If you wipe system you done loose data ... data here roughly means data partition which holds apps
it wipes only when you wipe data or a reset etc
in recovery you can make a backup of current rom ... you need abour 400 mb free space on sdcard
then try anything if it doesnt work out .. in recovery you can restore and nothing would be lost

i read "wipe system" in clockword mod means "Formatting the system partition will remove your ROM and leave your phone without an operating system "
that means i would lose my operating system or data then what do i do

u see apps are in /data partition
and rom on /system ... so wiping system wont afftect /data
its like in windows when you reinstall windows ... only c: gets wiped rest like d: etc arent changed
for nandroid restore ... u can go in recovery > backup and restore ... there is an option for that

im saying if i make a backup in cwm and then wipe system that will delete my rom operating system right? and then right after i go to restore the backup? if i do wont the settings go right back that is giving me the brightness problem. and if my phone accidentally turns off then how am i going to get to cwm if theres no rom operating system

©FIRST & LAST >>WIPING/FACTORY RESETTING SYSTEM DOESN'T DELETING SYSTEM.
My dear bro.answer is very very simple
First thing- you want data but not settings right ?
Just go in recovery - go in backup section - backup whole system(do a nandroid bacup)
After that in main menu select -wipe data/factory reset and then wipe cache and dalvik cache also,Ok
Now you only want data and fresh system(resetted) am i right ?
Now go to backup &restore - select Advance restore - select restore data only - select your last backup.
After that back in main menu and select reboot system now!and voila system rebooted(takes about 5-7 minutes ) and you can seeing problem is gone and all data is intact.as it is.
Last but no least - some of your apps that you installed separately is in internal memory is gone due to factory resetting system.
So it is adviced do a titanium backup of each before doing above things
Btw,who tells you wiping system delets itself?
