how to reset cm10 system settings and clear dalvik cache and cache?
lg p500 running cm10.1 unofficial 4.1.2 jellybean
i did some changes on settings>interface>system>statusbar¬ification drawer
and it changed some things i dont like problem is i cant seem to undo the changes
how do i reset the settings to default WITHOUT DELETING ANY DATA and will clearing dalvik cache and cache help and be safe to do even after
i flashed this custom rom back in march without deleting any data

i want to do this because i have this problem
i want to use the slide notification bar for quick brigthness changing it worked before but it shows this now:
lg p500 doesnt even have ambient light sensor so i dont know how automatic brightness would even be enabled:

How to make a nandroid backup and what does it do?
I thought if you click wipe system in recovery it deletes your data? Please explain thoroughly so I can do is safely and DON'T lose data

If you wipe system you done loose data ... data here roughly means data partition which holds apps
it wipes only when you wipe data or a reset etc
in recovery you can make a backup of current rom ... you need abour 400 mb free space on sdcard
then try anything if it doesnt work out .. in recovery you can restore and nothing would be lost

if i click wipe system do i lose data? what does wiping system do?
after i make the nandroid backup on my clockwork mod recovery how do i use it to restore from the backup?

i read "wipe system" in clockword mod means "Formatting the system partition will remove your ROM and leave your phone without an operating system "
that means i would lose my operating system or data then what do i do

you will loose your current rom not data ...
u see apps are in /data partition
and rom on /system ... so wiping system wont afftect /data
its like in windows when you reinstall windows ... only c: gets wiped rest like d: etc arent changed
for nandroid restore ... u can go in recovery > backup and restore ... there is an option for that

im saying if i make a backup in cwm and then wipe system that will delete my rom operating system right? and then right after i go to restore the backup? if i do wont the settings go right back that is giving me the brightness problem. and if my phone accidentally turns off then how am i going to get to cwm if theres no rom operating system

©FIRST & LAST >>WIPING/FACTORY RESETTING SYSTEM DOESN'T DELETING SYSTEM.
My dear bro.answer is very very simple
First thing- you want data but not settings right ?
Just go in recovery - go in backup section - backup whole system(do a nandroid bacup)
After that in main menu select -wipe data/factory reset and then wipe cache and dalvik cache also,Ok
Now you only want data and fresh system(resetted) am i right ?
Now go to backup &restore - select Advance restore - select restore data only - select your last backup.
After that back in main menu and select reboot system now!and voila system rebooted(takes about 5-7 minutes ) and you can seeing problem is gone and all data is intact.as it is.
Last but no least - some of your apps that you installed separately is in internal memory is gone due to factory resetting system.
So it is adviced do a titanium backup of each before doing above things
Btw,who tells you wiping system delets itself?

the better thing that you can do its full wipe (factory reset, wipe data cache & dalvik)
when you flashed the backup do battery wipe...
full wipe its better because the apk´s need to zipalign again, do a new busybox, etcc...

Hello,
I've been using xRecovery for a while on my Xperia X8. I usually make a weekly backup and if the phone crashes then I restore completely the latest backup. This implies in restoring apps and data to the previous state as well.
Today I was taking a closer look at the "partial" recovery options of xRecovery, and saw that I can restore only the system.
Initially, I thought I had found the solution, as I would be able to restore only the system, and maintain the state of my apps and data.
However, your response above has confused me a bit.
So, if my Android's system crashes, I can't simply restore only the system, and keep the current app and data? What would then be the best way to restore the system and have the most recent data and apps?

....to wipe unneeded files in the dalvik cache, and so they will add up over time and take a lot of space and make the phone slower? Therefore it is a MUST to root one's phone?

Try it. Use any file manager, go to /cache/dalvik-cache, and delete something, or everything.
The reason why it is called a cache is to speed up the phone.
It won't take up memory because of the way the phones storage is partitioned.

For formating caches you could use file manager but it also need root permission...
And until you flash other custom rom you need not to wipe cache...
Apps cache is being created for the first time you boot your phone for better application launch...
So if you got a serious problem of force crash on stock rom, please do full reset...

Guys, please read the original post.
Anyway, I tried unrooting my phone and deleting contents of dalvik cache. As expected, this is what happened:
1. Using ES File Explorer, WAS NOT ABLE to access the /data/dalvik-cache folder. It showed "Empty folder" or something like that.
2. Using Root Explorer, message that read "You're phone doesn't seem to be rooted, etc. etc. " (cannot access folder also)

So here's my new set of questions:
1. Does factory reset erase dalvik-cache? (I would assume so)
2. If phone is unrooted, dalvik cache contents cannot be accessed or deleted (as I have proven). Does that mean they will add up over time (unless you factory reset the phone??) and cause problems like making the phone slower?

What phone are you using? If for samsung, you can still wipe that in stock recovery even if you are unrooted...
Dalvik cache is in your /data partition, so yeah, it will be erased if you factory reset...your phone should manage dalvik by itself, it should not build up (except if you mess with it), so don't worry...
Ryuinferno, hello. I'm using Samsung Galaxy Ace. So how do I wipe the dalvik cache in stock recovery of unrooted phone? Are you referring to factory reset / data wipe? I know that already. I know that already. If you're referring to something else, please let me know.
Are you sure android phones manage the dalvik cache by themselves? Because sometimes when I uninstall an app, a related file would still be left in dalvik. I would then manually delete it or delete it using Titanium Backup. Also, why does Titanium Backup have an option to "Clean up the Dalvik cache..." if the phone manages it by itself?

Even wiping dalvik cache will cause apps to misbehave in you don't factory reset ...
If you are rooted , it will also have same effect ...
So do factory reset if you are in stock ROM and full wipe if you are on custom ROM ...

Hmm...I can't remember too well as I left stock recovery too long...never left my phone unrooted......I think there is a wipe cache option in stock recovery but I am not sure whether will it wipe dalvik or not...
Titanium backup has an option to wipe dalvik because when changing ROMs/restoring apps, the current dalvik may be conflicting with the newly restored app...that is why you need to rebuild them...usually the old unused dalvik should be cleared upon a reboot...

Maybe not? Because wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache are two separate options in ClockworkMOD Recovery, is it not? Or maybe in stock recovery, it DOES wipe dalvik as well....
Flashing ftf is a must after unlocking, but is there a way to preserve data ? I mean my phone will not get wipe

Try not to wipe cache and user data when flashing through Flashtool.
If you can't boot to system without wiping userdata, the best way is backup via Titanium Backup before unlocking bootloader.
If I'm not wrong, Internal SD wouldn't get wiped, only /data partition. But it's better to take backup of your Internal SD first.

Well ill just backup my updated system and data apps with Titanium. But when I restore it, all gets force close(gmail, google play services, etc...)

Ahh I see..
For system app backup, you need to restore it manually one by one, don't use batch action.
FC is normal for restoring system app, but after reboot, FC is gone.
If you want to move updated app from /data to /system partition.
You can use Batch action "Integrate update of system apps into ROM"
Again, it's normal if FC happen, just reboot your phone after finished integrating the update.

but problem is still there. I reflashed again and I just restored data apps... I already tried wiping cache and dalvik and reboot but FC still there... Im not planning to move to updated app
Aside from the pee-stain at the bottom of the phone I did notice one thing. When you do a factory reset (and select/check that deleting userdata is okay) it does not:
• delete sdcard data
• remove user settings for apps/wifi
• restore modified system files (hosts, etc...)
• root remains as well
Is there actually a way to do a proper reset and have it restore things as it should? In line with that how do I securely erase the data if possible so in given it to a family or it ends up on some truck with Avast that the data can't be restored?

WTF? Factory reset does not actually factory reset..? This seems like a huge bug with CM11... Especially the part about the lack of deletion in the SD card and user settings.

Nope. I had rooted the phone and while I think I lost root; the modified hosts file I changed (http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm) was still there as well as the entire SD card contents. It remembered my home wifi as well because I looked in settings and it showed my home one as "out of range"
Not sure if it's a bug or by design as I haven't tried flashing the stock image yet.
For a complete factory reset that will erase everything. Everything! You can do a factory reset from the boot loader. (Restart or power on phone and hold down the volume down button, scroll to factory reset, push power button) or from TRWP data reset, it makes you confirm and type "yes"
I reset my phone through the boot loader on accident a couple times and wanted to kick my dog.

It wouldn't need to do anything to the system partition of you don't root. And it's not able to restore the system partition without a system image and where are you going to store that? In the system partition? All user settings including apps and WiFi settings are stored on the data partition will actually be wiped unless when you log into your Google account you select restore from backup. There's no reason you would want to delete storage too when factory resetting unless you want to sell the phone and you can delete that in so many ways since it's your storage.

Thank you both Tried that and worked. Wanted to restore the hosts file to stock but couldn't find the original again. (didn't think to extract factory rom files on cyangen site)
The solution is in their FAQ.

Just flashing the ROM by itself will not wipe data or internal storage, but you may encounter bugs (it's called dirty flashing). The best way to get a bug-less ROM is to clean flash which means wiping every partition. The only one that should be OK is internal so you don't have to wipe that one when clean flashing.

No, flashing a ROM doesn't wipe user data. When flashing a new ROM it's best to wipe system, data, cache, and dalvik cache, but it isn't necessary to wipe (internal storage) user data.

So I recently flashed Paranoid Android based on Lollipop 5.1. Everything was working perfectly but I decided I wanted to flash Xperience kernel. I did a nandroid backup first. I flashed Xperience. After going into a bootloop I went back to TWRP to restore and retry to see what I did wrong. After restoring I am cought in a bootloop again. What should I do?

Already tried that. I already got it to boot but I lost all my apps and stuff so that sucks. I am still trying to make the restore work because I am lazy about downloading everything again configuring and personalizing my device again.

have you backupd all the stuff (/data /system /boot ) ??? thats really all that need. wiping cache means no real data loss. if yes, then wipe the phone complety( format /sytsem /data /cache /dalvik /internal storage) (maybe copy internl storeage on pc 1st) to make sure all is fine from phons side. after that restore your backup completly but without restoring cache & try to boot.

I did not backup everything. I only backed up what was checked by default on TWRP so that is probably it. Thanks.

i think TWRP atleast backups /system , /data & /boot maybe u check it? (you can tap on cutom restore or look in the backup folder to know whats bacupd)

Damm I am so stupid. Apparently I accidentally unchecked boot so it wasnt backed up. That is most likely the reason why I am not booting.

Ok then its easy. Wipe the Device, install only the Rom which has the needed kernel, Boot it once, then back to recovery & restore System + Data. Done =) good luck
Btw /Boot is the kernel. So you never restored your old kernel and spirit bootlooped like you say...
