Anyone know better apps than Voice Alerts? - HTC Inspire 4G

Hi.
I'm wondering if anyone knows a good app that alerts you like "You've got mail" "Incoming message."
If you've ever owned iPhone, I think you'd know what I'm looking for when I say "Crystal Voice." This was such a great app. Nice voice and professional.
I suppose it's possible to repackage the sound files from Crystal Voice and make it into a sound set for Android instead, but I'm not smart enough to do that lol.
I'd appreciate any input on this. I'm more and more loving my Android
GT

If I'm not mistaken Vlingo is a good alternative.
Sent from my illmatic Inspire 4G / Desire HD

Thanks for the tip. It looks like an interesting program.
Unfortunately, I'd rather keep my phone light and don't want to install a heavy program like that for my small purpose.
I ended up just doing it myself. In case, anyone is interested, here is what I did.
1. I extracted the sound files I wanted from iPhone (in this case, Crystal Voice). You can get whatever sound files you want.
2. Convert them into mp3 files.
3. Put them on your phone's sdcard
4. Use Root Explorer (or other softwares) to move them into desired directories:
System/Media/Audio/Notifications
System/Media/Audio/Ringtones
System/Media/Audio/UI
I think it's supposed to work then, but I had some trouble with the sound files not showing up, so I took the following steps.
5. Use ADB to change ownership of the files. "chown root.root filename"
6. Set permission to same as other stock sound files (you can easily check and compare through Root Explorer)
7. Restart your phone.
*In order to make some of those changes, you need to make sure to put your phone in debug mode. When you use ADB and use "su," make sure you have Superuser app running then choose allow.
*For UI files: For UI file, you need to rename your custom sound file to the exact same name and replace it.
Why should you bother?
lol, maybe you don't need to, but here are my reasons:
- I don't want to install 3rd party software because I want to keep my phone light. If I keep relying on 3rd party softwares, soon I'll be clogging my phone with too much stuff, slowing it down eventually and taking up space.
- With this method, the sound files become part of the ROM itself. This means, I can make a backup of this ROM, and whenever I do restore, I don't need to reset the sounds because they will be there as default sounds already set.
- Just for the fun and learning purpose. I'm new to Android, so it's good for me to experiment and learn tricks
I hope this is helpful to some people. If anyone want the sound files from Crystal Voice, let me know. I can share them with you.
GT

I would greately appreciate it if you could send me the sound files from Crystal Voice?

Sure. I might as well make it available here for others too rather than responding to each request.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=UDCBZSA8
Some notes!
- I didn't make them. Crystal Voice is a free sound theme in iPhone. The credit goes to its author. I merely converted them to make them compatible with Android.
- You have to manually replace the files. Chown may not be neccesary as some sound files worked without that step.
- ACCESS GRANTED: I really love this unlock voice. HOWEVER, it turns out that Android uses the same sound for when you submit things on the internet (e.g. when you click on search) and when you pull or dismiss the keyboard. In other words, your phone will say "Access granted" many times. I gave up on using this sound because that's just annoying and weird. (Instead, I am using a Lion's roar sound, which is cool for both unlocking and browsing experience). I suggest you find your favorite sound for it too (maybe a puppy? lol).
I hope this is helpful,
GT

contacts & ringtones

hi everyone
i was wondering why when i assign a specific ringtone to a contact, it doesn't work. i have flashed several different roms for my herald/wing and sometimes it works. is there a registery edit or something i have to do? i have tried saving the files into the main memory and also the storage and neither works. any ideas or should i just give up on have "devil woman" play when my wife calls.
thanks
DK
Unless something's changed with OpenTouch 6.5 from ttrans fromer OT releases there's nothing special involved. Saving ringtones to the memory card often results in the loss of the assignment.
What type of file is it you're trying to use, how large is it and have you tried encoding it as another type?

i start with an mp3 and use audio manager to trim it and save into ringtones folder. i have also used mp3 trimmer with the same results.
Have you tried MP3 ringtones supplied by anyone else?
If you want you may PM me your email address and I will send you one from my phone that I know works.

i have some RT's that i purchased a while ago and i have some midi tones too. its wierd, when i was using otv3.0 biggy all worked fine. i don't know. thanks for the offer and help
Ok, so the bought ones aren't working either I take it. Do they work when you reflash OT3?
Are you restoring from a backup or do these not work with a fresh setup?
well i kinda have ot6.5 lite tweaked the way i like, so i don't want to go back to 3.0 just for tones. i was just wondering if anyone out there had already come across this and had a reg fix or something. i guess not that many people use diff tones for diff contacts. me, i need diversity in life, plus its easier to recognize a tone than pick up the phone and look whose calling. know what i mean? i also get a kick out of watching my co-workers faces when the diff songs come up. i guess i'll just keep an eye out for a fix. throw me one if you find it first.
thanks
Well, the reason I asked if you've tried a fresh install or even going back to 3.0 is to see if it's not some corruption somewhere. I've run every ROM you've listed so far without issue. I use different ring tones for most of my contacts as well and the only times I ever had that issue was with one corrupt file and the rest were when I put the MP3s on my SDHC.
I'll keep an eye out though. I'd still try backing up (even if you just have to use a demo of Sprite Backup or something) and do a completely fresh install. If you find a solution post it up for future reference.
hmmm. i'm not sure what you men as to a fresh install. i am kinda new to all this tech, i've only had a wing for about 4 months. i have hardspl'd my wing and i hardly ever get any errors when flashing. does sprite backup keep all your rom settings? pretty much all i ever need to keep is my stuff on the mem card. what i dont understand is that i can set a tone for my main ring and that always works. something gets screwy when applied to contacts. so you keep all your tones in main memory? isn't that a mem hog?
Sprite and a couple other apps out there create a backup file of all your settings and selected or all of your files. They saved to a compressed file on either your mem card or your PC (not all apps will backup straight to the PC).
At any rate I just wanted to make sure you weren't from a backup file... to eliminate one possible source of the issue (incompatible settings saved to it from a different ROM setup or corruption).
What I mean by a fresh install is reflashing the ROM and reinstalling all your apps via their installer. No restoring from a backup file or copying files to their folders. Not trying to confuse you.
First thing I'd try now that I know a bit more would be to download a demo of a backup program and make a backup. Then I'd reflash, try setting things up far enough to test the ringtones. If they work, then just plan on reconstructing your preferred setup without using the backup to restore your settings from... if there's no change, then restore the back up and you're right back where you were before.
Does that make sense?
If you're having this problem with more than the one ROM I doubt it's just a setting error. I'd try different sound files altogether.
Specifically which ROMs are you having this problem with anyway? You might see if they've got something in common, such as the same version of sound drivers.
not confusing at all. i got what your saying. i guess i'm actually fresh installing everytime since i don't use any back-up programs. is that right? anyway what other forms of sound files would you recommend? what are you using? the versions of roms i have been using are basically every rom from Ttran's OT collection, starting with v3.0 and currently v6.5 throttlelaunch3d lite. v3.0 is the only one that the tones worked for. i will try the back-up idea you have after work today. thats a good idea. thanks
Yeah, I'd call the way you're doing it a "fresh install"... I mean by that that the system and ROM are essentially fresh and untouched. So you know there's not an old setting that might be causing the problems or a bad registry entry.
Backing up definitely makes things easier. I make a backup of my setup fairly often. Then when I want to try another I'll flash it, start setting it up, and if I need to be back with my old setup before I can finish setting up the new one, I'll backup where I am with the new setup, reflash my old ROM and restore the backup for the old setup... then I can resume working on getting the new one where I want later on.
I make my MP3 ringtones using Audacity. I generally make the mono and only 40kbps... nice and small but usually still sound good at that size. You could also try a WAV file.
I haven't used OT 3, but I've tried all the rest, not just the lite ROMs either. I haven't had any trouble. My offer still stands to send you one of my ringtones for you to test with if you want.
sounds good. is audacity a free? i'm gonna pm you my email and we can try a little test. maybe the stereo is the problem.
thanks
Email sent.
I doubt the stereo is the issue, although file size, bit rate and VBR may be.
Audacity is free. It takes a little getting used to, but there are how-to's on the net, just Google it. It's NOT as user friendly as some apps, but it is generally better than more of the dumbed down apps.

Install App From another Android?

I got my self the hero, and my wife the Moment. I am slightly jealous of the hardware she has..but that aside, I am in love with my Hero.
However, she does have one app that i really want and the market place does not have. I assume this is an app installed by sprint.
It is Photo and Video uploader. You set an email address or other location and after a video or photo is taken, it automatically uploads the photo to the predetermined destination. GREAT FOR BACKING UP PICTURES! But, her camera hardware blows. 3.2 MP and it is sooo slow. So picture quality is no where near that of the Hero's 5 MP.
So the real question here - -
Can I ADB into her phone and just take the .APK and ODEX file for this app and push it to my phone? Is it that easy???
Some apps are that easy. Give it a try and find out! The worst thing you'll get is some force closes.
However most stock apps require files from /system/lib that help run that apk. And they don't have the same naming convention therefore you won't know which one(s) it is amongst the 100s there. But I always say try and see what happens.
And if it works upload that .apk for the rest of us!
Thinking out loud here...well..you get the point.
Could I copy all of system/lib and only copy the files that dont already exist?
That could be a giant waste of space though, and it could still rely on a file that I have, not just one that isn't there....
Also since I am not "installing" the app, could Apps2SD hinder me? I am not entirely sure how a2sd works other than tricking the phone into using the SD card as a partition and unioning it with the existing part.
I love how open android is supposed to be, but how the darn manufacturers kill us with the different platform crap.

Am I aloud to do that? I have seen XDA Mods get on to some people about uploading APK's. I guess I should read the EULA for that app before I do?

Copying the ../lib/ over and not replacing existing files could work. lol. As for apps2sd... you kind of have two ways you can try installing this. Without copying the lib and all that just try putting the apk on to your sdcard and browsing to it using astro or linda (a file manager) and click on the apk and installing it. See if it errors out or fails. If it does, THEN try copying it and the odex to /system/app (if it has an odex I'm pretty confident you won't be able to install it using package manager). If that still fails then you can go crazy and trying copying the lib ha.

I don't remember if I read it on here or ppcgeeks but I believe officially the only stock apk's not allowed is quick office. But don't quote me on that.
So I hooked up to the Moment through ADB last night.
Found out really quickly that I can SU with it....
There is a "non permanent" hack out there to become root, but I tried it and still couldn't mount the file system to copy from it.
Any ideas guys?
From what I understand the Moment uses an FS16? file System? Something Odd that non of the other droids seem to be using.
Just an Idea, thought I would throw it out there.
Does the temporary root allow for running applications as root an the device itself?
There is an app in the market called root explorer that allows copy/paste/cut/delete from the system/app folder.
It may be possible to use that app to copy the needed filed to your sdcard and then extract them from there.
This would all be contingent on the app being able to mount the directory as r/w though, so who knows, worth a shot though i guess.

This root doesn't allow you to run Root apps. not sure why, seems like root would be root.
After some reading, the root method that is being used on the Moment is not the safest. Apparently if you skip a step you have a brick. And with no Nandroid backup at the moment(pun?) I would HATE to attempt it. Apparently though Root sticks until you reboot. There is an INit. script that runs and resets the permisions.
I know, "Don't skips steps and you'll be ok"
I may get brave and try it tonight...
as far as I can tell you cannot install this app on the hero. I'm not sure what the app is called and unless it starts in the /data folder it is under the system dumps

ROCK ON! Thanks for the link to the dump, I hadn't thought about looking around in one of these.
I will post what I find out.
WOOT IT WORKS!!!!!
So any how the application is in that Dump under apps, its only an APK
xms-android-1.0.42-prod.apk
If you are interested in what it does:
You setup predetermined "places" Flikr, FB, EMAIL, what ever.
Any picture or video you take automatically gets put in an upload queue and it sent to your predetermined places.
I am using it for back up, I have 2 kids and sometimes the cell phone is the quickest way to snap a great picture. Keeping these pictures in mutltiple places, like your 7 gig google account, is a nifty way to backup.
I am waiting for a Mod to get back to me if I can post the APK or not. I don't want to get in trouble.

I will let you know in a few minutes. As soon as I get done with my WiFi teether I will compare the two. Pretty sure they should be the same.
EDIT: I am not sure if it is hardware or not. Running the same youTube video side by side - Our HERO has better color quality, Deeper blacker. The Moment has slightly sharper edges to the pictures, not quite as blurry. the moment does not go "Full Screen" for videos either which could be contributing to the sharper look to things. My assumption would be that this is a difference in the hardware. Quality of youTube videos seems to have diminished over the years anyways, none of the really look "good" any more. Probably in an effort to save bandwidth.
However, if you want to take a look personally, I will post the APK for you. Just please don't blame me if you forget to back up the original and want to revert....I love disclaimers.
I was trying to use that picture uploader, for me it stalls on picking a new location. Wonder if it is because I am on gutted rom and missing some pointers somewhere

I have never used Gutted so I do not know what it offers/doesn't have.
Gutted is as vanilla as our Rom can get. It's quick too
that's pretty cool and sounds like a great idea for backing up pics so what all would I need to do to get this and install it I have root access already

Code:
adb install xms-android-1.0.42-prod.apk

Works great on the Sprint Hero and MoDaCo ROM

Phone only rings once?!

Hey guys, I'm a new Nexus S owner coming over from an Evo. On my Evo I rooted it and put a custom rom on it and such, so I'm not completely new or wet behind the ears when it comes to doing things with your phone.
Here's the thing: I went and put custom ringtones on my Nexus, but the one I use primarily only rings once. I look at it and see it vibrating and still receiving a call...but the ring-tone does not loop. It rings once and that's it. So far it's the only problem I'm having with my phone. Anyone having the same problem or have a fix for me that I can use?
Thanks in advance for the help!
btw: I put the custom ringtones on my phone by making a folder in the SD card titled media/audio/ringtones. I did that and the tones showed up. Is there another method that I can use that will make the ringtone repeat itself, because this whole 1 ring thing is not going to work, lol.
someone else asked me about this exact same thing right before you posted this. I tested, and ringtones on your sd dont loop :/ I made a 4 second ringtone to test and it rings for 4 seconds then stops. i know this wasnt the case on other phones and dont see why it is now. but just letting you know thats your issue.
I don't find this to be true for me. I've got the same setup and mine loop. I don't know how to help troubleshoot it for you either. I'm running stock rooted. I will test this later and let you know if I was wrong.
Yea, I'm running stock rooted as well...I don't understand why this would be an issue at all. It doesn't make any sense. I would hate to have to just make the ringtone longer by looping it manually and then replacing it on the phone, there has to be some other reason behind this.

I just made a ringtone, placed it on my sd, and it only played once. I was asked via gtalk by another NS4G owner about it, so I tested. Maybe your ringtone is longer than you think?
I am having the same issue. I took the stock ringtones off the last rom I was running on my Evo and they don't loop on my nexus. I even tried placing the ringers in the actual ringtone folder (/system/media/audio/ringtones) and they still did not loop, I just gave up. Any one have any ideas?
Are you guys using google voice integration? I found that it started only playing ringtones once after integrating with google voice.
I've noticed the same thing as you guys have, can't figure it out.

That could be it. I remember when I first got my phone the ringtone would loop. Sometime after GV/Sprint it stopped doing it.
I did integrate after getting my phone, and it use to loop while it was integrated I think...but then I turned the integration off after a while, lately I started noticing that the ringtones weren't looping.
I use music files for my phone that last until the phone is answered I never noticed

I've done a bit of investigating with this and have yet to find a definitive answer. The ones that will repeat are on system media ringtones. They are all ogg. I was playing with Vespa.ogg. I made an ogg file and tried to disguise it as vespa. I made sure the audio file characteristics were similar. Permissions and ownership were copied too. I even changed the tag of the file of it's name and composer was the same. I copied my file on top of the real one in system and made everything ro and rebooted. None of that made any difference, it wouldn't loop. I opened up music app and played files. The original would loop but the imposter wouldn't. The only differences I still see is my file is 3k smaller and not the same date as all the other ogg files in the system folder. Other than that, all my theories of what is causing this behavior have been wrong.
Could it be md5 signatures? Date and time (I don't know how to change that only using the phone and gui)? Other than that I have no frigging clue. Anyone else motivated enough to figure it out? I can't think of anything else and don't know cli enough to agamgm things in a terminal window or emulator.
If I copied a file from system to sdcard, it would loop out of it's native folder. I don't know if a ringtone editing and assigning app would make any difference. It's too late and I'm too tired ATM to do anymore detective work today.
Its the gv integration. Do the same tests after you disable it.

Are you picking one of the ogg files of ringtones that came with the phone? If you play the file you chose in a music app, how many seconds long is it? I just said to hell with it and found the ringtone I like and copy paste in an audio editing program on the computer enough times to make it 30 seconds long. Problem not solved but taken care of.
nope, i'm using a file seted by 'zedge' app, it's an mp3 file! i also use another short mp3 file and it also loops.
i'm on cm7 with stock kernel!
Is it possible there is only an issue with the Sprint version of the phone?
Grasping at straws now but anything is possible. If I remember, zedge you can download and has a built in trimmer and can assign stuff too.
I will play with ringdroid and the like and see what comes of it.

PowerOn sound issue.

I'm posting here because its a G2X I'm working on and It seems to be an issue specifically with my phone as most others have no issues getting it to work.
The specifics. I'm trying to learn is my main reason for this, I'm working on a slightly modified version of Ultimate Rom on a G2X running Faux 0.0.3 ext2 kernel. I'm using Adw launcher EX as I'm building my first theme for it. I have shutdown sounds(the T-mo stock shutdown). I verified sounds were all set to max in the settings > sounds section. I've tested this under both CM and Ultimate so I think it's not a Rom specific issue
From what I've read the file needs to be named PowerOn.wav and needs to be located in the /etc/ directory with permissions set as rw-r-r-- for the file itself.
I cannot find specifics on file limitations only that some people have seen it limited to a 7 second clip. The one I want is slightly longer but I've tried a short 2 second clip as well as the longer 7 second clip.
The file was modified in a rudimentary style on a windows XP machine running a Fedora VM so god knows what may have happened in the background so to keep a clean slate I downloaded a simple "Droid.wav", renamed it appropriately and used that as a test, it also did not work. I'm renaming it in the terminal emulator and it was downloaded on the phone itself to exclude my work PC as the source of the issue.
File is PCM 44,000 kHz 16bit stereo 172kb/sec
I know I'm forgetting some bit of pertinent info but I'm taking calls (I work a call center) and so it's hard to stay focused lol. Thanks in advance for any help you guys can offer! (Or Trolls.. I appreciate a good troll.)
lol, This issue seems to get passed over no matter where I post it asking for help, It's kinda hard to care about it for most people I guess.
You know it never occurred to me to try .ogg
Will test and then come back and send you both $5 if it works lol.
Well I own Ben $5 lol, worked like a charm.
Thank you for saving my sanity Ben! I'll donate to you soon as my deposit hits paypal.

Yes, however it is much better to freeze the app. You can use Titanium Backup to do that https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup&hl=en
When you freeze it, under the default setting of Titanium Backup, it will still get updates and remain frozen (won't be used by the system or be in the app drawer or on the home screens). This is much safer than removing it because if the phone misbehaves you can always unfreeze the app as well. There's no real reason to remove the app by deleting it.
If you do want to delete it, then native apps live in the /system/app/ folder, which is mounted as a read only filesystem. Since you are rooted, you can remount it so that you can read and write to the folder and delete the app, however that said, its much better to simply rename the app. I haven't renamed apps in the system folder on this phone (just got it) but have on the Samsung SGS II, which is a much safer phone to play around with like this from the look of it so far, though.
Every app on a stock install has two files, one with a .apk file extention and one with and .odex file extention. From experience with the other Android phone, you can just rename something to, for example, videoplayer.apk.backup and videoplayer.odex.backup. It can be renamed back later if you need to. You want a file browser that will remount the filesystem so that its rewritable. Root Explorer is what I've used but there's plenty of others that are gaining in popularity. It can be done at the command line as well.
All of the above said, though, you really, really, really, want to make sure that you aren't freezing or deleting or renaming an app like this that will interfere with your ability to undo it. If you do something that gets the phone stuck with lots of things crashing and making the phone unresponsive, or worse unbootable, then that's a very bad situation. It was always really easy to deal with from the recovery screen on my SGS II but I haven't yet tried things out on my RAZR HD in this fashion and things are differant when it comes to it. I haven't tried much out yet.
Also, and I really don't want to come off as being rude, and I hate it when people do on this forum, but because you had to ask if it was possible on a rooted phone at all sort of indicates that you might want to get as much advice about what you want to freeze or delete before doing it. Its prudent on any phone and less is more until you've gathered more information; and from the amount of support on this phone's section (low number of people having the phone and tinkering at this point) of the forum my guess is that this it will take some time and patients to get all the answers and information that you want before going balls deep.
Good luck, and remember that less is more, and that support will grow over time.
If you delete you will have a difficult time taking the next OTA. Freeze them. There is almost no space to be had by removing them.
