There's someone in my area trying to sell his/her captivate for fairly cheap but it's labeled as broken.
The problem:
Phone doesn't turn on without being plugged in to a power outlet, so to be able to turn it on, it should be plugged in to power source, computer or car charger. Other than that phone functions properly.
Any idea what the problem is?
unrepairable....you should buy it and send it to me.....
it might be a bad battery, no way to know without having the phone in hand.

got an SDA with no prior knowledge of its history other than "it wouldn't power on" well when I got it the battery was completely dead "0 volts". Since I didn't have an external charger I did a little work to my external MPx220 charger "uses a 3.6v LiIbattery" to fully charge the SDA battery. I put it in and tried the key sequence to get the bootloader to appear.. no go. Tried camera button while I plugged in USB with and without battery.. nothing. So I left it plugged in while I was searching the forums last night for more information the screen turned white and all the keys lit for about a minute then it turned off again.. and I haven't been able to get it to repeat this since.. is there any hope at this point? Thanks!
now I'm confused.. I've seen yet another method for entering bootloader on the Tornado's http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Tornado the camera + botton on opposite side and power.. this doesn't seem to work for me either.. but which one is right? does the battery need to be in or out? usb plugged or unplugged.. I can't believe this device would be so "dead" as to not do anything at all.. will T-Mobile honor the year warranty of these new phones?
Is this model just so new that not much is known about it? I'm surprised that I haven't gotten any type of input yet.
the same problem
hallo
i have the same problem, please if you have found the solution, tell me or send me an E-mail [email protected]
To me it seems like the battery is not charging at all. I've seen this with Motorola Li-Ion batteries. Unless there is enough amperage in the charger, the battery won't charge, regardless of what it looks like. If you really want to go forward with this, one idea may be to get an actual SDA charger, or replacement battery.

Or maybe a Motorola charger? USB cable is 5v, Motorola charger w/USB connector is 5.9v. Motorola phones can charge from PC USB port/hub, but only if the phone is turned on. If phone cannot be turned on because the battery is dead, you need the wall charger...
Anybody has any idea if it's known issue. My phone just shuts down as soon as I connect USB cable to it. Be it charger or car charger. It shuts down regardless what condition phone is in (i.e. booting, fully booted, at ATT logo screen during boot). It just immediately shuts down as soon as detect USB current.
After 15 or so tries so far it accepted USB charge finally and does not show this symptoms anymore. But this happens couple of times a month to me.
I noticed that USB socket is loose on a phone, that is it can rotate along axis about 15% both ways. Is it normal for Captivate or it's possible loose contacts on motherboard?
I'm really sure the socket isn't supposed to have any give whatsoever.

Did you find a solution to this, I am seeing this now and I have 3 chargers home/car/work and all show same behavior. So if this is socket issue I am assuming it is my phone....
Please let me know if you found any solution...

My phone was replaced but issue still remains. It appears have something to do with battery and battery connector to the phone. Remove and reinsert battery couple of times and issue will go away.
On my Captivate, the USB (mini B) socket is absolutely firm relative to the outer shell of the phone. If that puppy has got any movement, I'd bet a buck or two there's a loose connection at the main board.
Captivate dies when plugged in
I just bought a captivate from ebay and it will not charge or sync either instantly dies ive tried two different chargers and even looked and soilder joints for usb anyone know what to do???

A wrong battery can cause this. I bought a battery for Verizon Facinate. Although it is the same exact shape and size, the model # of the battery is slightly different in last two letters. And it will shut down the phone whenever I try to charge it. Switched to a Sprint Epic battery and all works fine. Obviously, Facinate belong to a familiy of Galaxy S i5xx, not i9000.

hello everyone i have same problem with sgs vibrant t959 after going to stock rom 2.1. Plz help Me
I was using my Nexus S on Google Maps, with GPS turned on, as battery was low, (about 15%) I was charging it with a car charger bought from ebay. I turned my car off, and took my cell phone with me. I tryed to turn it on, but no success. Thought it was battery drain... but it woldn't charge anymore!!
Tryed:
1. Car charger
2. WAll charger (about 4 of them! Including the one that came with my wifes Galaxy S)
3. Charging the spare battery and inserting on my phone! (doesn't even vibrate on power buttom)
4. Connecting it to a PC (windows and ubuntu can't even detect that I have inserted a USB device!)
5. Leaving the battery out of the device for a night
6. Exchanging batteries with my wifes Galaxy S!
Anybody have ANY idea besides taking it back to bestbuy?
I hate to realise that I may be in deep sh*t
Thanks for any help!
Bad idea to be using cheap eBay car charger, probably incorrect voltage, screwed up your phone big time. It sounds like you've exhausted all your options. Could be a software issue if you haven't tried that yet, otherwise, yep, you're screwed.
What do you mean by software issue?
I have tryed turning it on Holding volume up key and nothing.
Kinda sucks!
Anybody know's when Will Galaxy S II will be released?
I don't want a Atrix with froyo
From what you describe, it looks like an hardware issue. There is virtually no way that you could inadvertently destroy the software in your phone by what you describe.
The most likely explanation is, that some voltage spike or isolation brakedown or whatever in the car charger fried the hardware of your phone.
However: It could also just be a unfortunate coincidence and there is no way for you to know for sure. (However, I wouldn't advise on using that car charger any more)
So my advise is to send your phone in under warranty and tell them not to do anything on it that will cost you money before speaking with you first.
I'm always worried something like this will happen.
But I agree with cgi. Definitely sounds like something you'll have to have fixed.
can't see what else you can do... i really think it's a hw issue.
i'm pretty sure it won't help (as you already tried another charged battery), but when i had a milestone, i was able to bring it back from the dead following this guide: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/te...oid-not-booting-odd-behavior.html#post1025466
but if you can claim for the warranty, you really should do.
just don't get bad ideas from the guide and good luck! =o)
return it. your ebay thing screwd up the voltage/charging component that directs the voltage form the micro usb to the battery.
wel thats what i asume.
so its a HW problem you cant fix.
sorry for your loss man.
You should never turn off the ignition or start your car with something plugged into your cig lighter socket. The sudden jolt of electric current can fry whatever electronic you have connected. I have a GPS that comes with a big warning "turn on ignition before plugging device into cig lighter socket" and "unplug before turning off the ignition".

I think that only proves extremely bad engineering on the part of that power adapter maker and the attempt to pass on any problems from it to the user.
I never saw anything that asked to use it only with the engine running. Where I come from the majority of people uses manual transmissions. If every engine stall on a intersection would kill off a phone, then I think regulators would have done something about it.
Also it is just not realistic. How often would you just forget to pull out the plug?
It surely is not trivial to protect from overvoltage, but it is by no means very difficult, especially in an isolated environment like a car.
No one asks you to take out your radio before you start the car either.
It doesn't mean that you have to use it while the car is running. I think you're missing the point. What I meant was that don't have anything plugged into the cig socket while turning off the car or starting the car. I tested it with a multimeter. There's a huge fluxuation of current from the socket as you do those two things.

I do get the point, but maybe I wasn't clear enough. I know that the in-car power grid is not a very "clean" power source. I would fully expect to get voltage spikes (no idea what you mean with current fluctuation).
Consequently, every piece of hardware I would design to work off such a power source, would be specifically designed to work flawlessly in the face of these conditions. The radio (and every other electronic device) in your car proves that this is possible.
With a standard multimeter you can't even measure what's going on, since it is not fast enough, but even if it was, you couldn't follow it. You would need at least something that samples and holds the highest voltage value and then display it.
What I was trying to say is that the company sold you a defective by design piece of hardware and tries to transfer responsibility for it to you.
I don't really see any posts about charging issues but rarely my phone will not charge regardless of cable, wall outlet or through usb such as computer or car. I'll find my phone plugged in overnight only to wake up to it being dead and charging. I seem to find if I reboot my phone it will actually start charging again otherwise it will act like a cord is never plugged in.
Today it decided to die and not even turn on, however a reset with power and volume off fixed this. But I was wondering if this is a normal issue? Or software related or should I check with warranty? This happens rarely though.
Hi, All,
I was charging my phone in my car using the original charger cable but the car charger was not OEM. At some point, the phone stopped charging and it was still on. By the time I reached my destination, the battery died out and the phone switched off and hasn't switched back on ever since. I think the charger slot has stopped working.
1. Could that be it? Will a simple charger-slot change fix my phone? Or could it be something serious (motherboard, battery, etc)? I personally think that it could be the charger slot since the battery died out and then the phone switched off and it wasn't abrupt—which would be the case if there was an issue with the motherboard.
2. If it is bad news, is there any way to access my data? I have some important documents and photos in the phone that I don't want to lose so any way to extract the data from the phone would be useful.
I tried holding vol up + power button, tried connecting the USB cable to PC and switch it on, tried leaving it on charge for 4 - 5 hours and tried switching on, but all in vain. However, if I connect it to the charger and leave it on, the camera part will get heated up. The LED light indicating that the phone is charging will not light up though.
Do let me know if you guys have seen a similar issue. TIA!
