Just curious, what exactly does it mean?
hd2 can be rooted, what does that mean?
'root' refers to the root user account - like the administrator account on a windows machine. Linux devices have a root account that has full admin rights.
To root unlocks use of that account, giving you full permissions to your device and allowing you to do things you would not normally have permission to do. For ex. to install custom roms on your phone, you would need to root first.

Guys..if I root my samsung galaxy s 2 i know there are risks such as if im infected with malware or whatever software software i use the will have ADMIN right over the whole phone.
How ever at the moment its no rooted and if an application needs admin rights it asks for a password ad is added to the DEVICE ADMINISTRATORS
so my question is once i root my phone WILL THE SOFTWARE ASK FOR DEVICE ADMIN RIGHTS IF IT REQUIRES THEM ?? OR WILL IT ACQUIRE THEM AUTOMATICALLY WITHOUT ASKKING ???
Hello!
don't worry about that!
Rooting your phone puts an app called "Superuser" in your app drawer.
Whenever an app wants root access, Superuser will asks you if it's OK. If you say no, the app will not get root access.

some methods of rooting find an exploit in your phone, but this is used to give you superuser. now dont think that means that rooting leaves your phone wide open. your phone is just as likely to be infected as my phone. just install antivirus apps (lookout)
Don't worry about it. I don't think there are too much malware on android system, unless you get something from outside android market like crack or something else.
anyway,If you still worry about this. I suggest you just say no to any app ask root.
Thanx man

hi, is it conceivably possible to root a fone with something like connect-bot. since it's local command-line shell has access to the directory tree above /mnt/sdcard , couldnt someone download the files needed for the root to the fone via the web browser and copy them to the correct locations with something like connect bot ?
i am new to android so i am wondering if there is a hole in my theory ?
thanks,
Depends on the phone really. Some need to flash files you normally can't while OS is still up. Some, perhaps?
There are root deployment applications which can be ran on some phones

thanks, i wonder if there is a roster of files that need to be updated/ replaced for rooting a 'samsung galaxy s2 epic 4g touch by sprint' (i hate that name).
the reason why i ask is because since android has a perfectly capable linux command-line and file browser then there is no need for windows. (i managed to install heimdall on fedora but i have a suspicion that the apb just runs the commands as if it was run directly on the fone).
Most of the phones need to connect into PC usb port... unfortunatelly
The way of rooting depends on which android version you are using. Some exploits allow applications to get root privilege; others, like psneuter(2.1) or zergRush(2.3.3) work restarting the ADBd with root privileges by making it believe it's running on a test(rooted) phone.
On the first case, I remember an application called "Universal Androot", which I used to root my first Android phone, SE Xperia X10 mini, when using Android 1.6. That app exploited some security error on the system, and gained root itself, so I rooted my phone without need of a computer. Also, for 2.3 API Level 9, I think GingerBreak has an android app which does the same.
For the second type(the most common), it's necessary to use a computer, as the only way to get the root privilege once exploited is via the ADB console "adb shell". The other processes will remain running with their original privileges.
^ thx for the explanation. kinda' like you cant upgrade the kernal of a running system.
hmm that would be nice if someone sort this out..
Like Z4?
HTC Thunderbolt running MIUI
sort of, but more related to android security: exploits like psneuter & zergRush attack ADBd to make it run as root. other exploits, like gingerbreak, give root privileges to the application which run the exploit(somehow equivalent to running "su" on the terminal)

When you get a new Android phone, you are the Windows equivalent of a "Standard user".
When you get SU access, you become "Administrator" (The technical term for linux systems is "root").
So, that being said, is it possible to exploit the Windows desktop operating system and gain Administrator-level permissions as a standard user?
In an oversimplified statement:
Can you "root" Windows?

I don't understand why you would need to have administrator privileges on a standard user account when you are free to switch from standard to admin and even to use the admin account as the default account....
Yes it can be done. As stated above. There are also scripts that will make the current user the owner of all folders and files.

I would want to do it because I am currently using library computers and I need to install drivers for my phone and it won't let me because I'm not an admin. I need the drivers to use ADB (use the links in my signature to look at the stuff I need ADB for). I already tried rebooting in Safe Mode (for XP). I also need it for Windows 7.

You won't find anything to work if their IT was good enough as you would have to download the script to do it.

Oh I see. There are good reasons why public computers doesn't have admin privileges, and you shouldn't try to tamper a computer that you don't own. And like zelendel said above, their IT probably did everything to lock that pc...

Idk, I never had to use a script to gain admin privileges. Never used public computer for this kind of things.
WARNING: THIS IS ILLEGAL IN SOME PLACES.
If you are blocked from the internet at any place like the library, or school, or anywhere else here is the solution to getting unblocked.
First, you MUST be rooted to even attempt to do this. If you aren't rooted use Kingo root or Iroot. If neither work then just PM me and i will help you.
Second, after you are rooted you go to the app store and download the app Mac Changer .
When the app is finished downloaded make sure that you have backed up everything n your device via recovery on a SD CARD (regular storage can be used).
What this app does is change you MAC address and changing your MAC address can mess your device up in a way if done incorrectly.
An issue that some people have are bootloops or bricks etc.
If you follow everything in this guide then you will be fine. Third open the app and Grant SU access then it is pretty straight forward after that put in a new Mac Address
and Save. ONCE YOU RESTART OLD MAC ADDRESS WILL RESTORE
That's it thanks for reading my guide
Hello,
I recently purchased an LG phone that came with root access. When I connect my phone via ADB, I can see I am root user by using the whoami command. However, when I try to use certain Applications that require root access (such as Network Signal Guru), it is saying ROOT not found.
I am assuming applications that require root access look for a certain directory or file which I don't have since this phone came pre-rooted. My question is, how can I get my phone to run those applications and if I need any files, how would I go about obtaining them?

I bought this phone pre-rooted. I don't think there is a method available for rooting my LG Fiesta phone. The Root Checker app says my device is not rooted as well. However, using ADB shell on my phone is showing me as root user. I have root access on my phone and can access directories and view files, that otherwise wouldn't be possible if I was a regular user.
See in developer option root access only abd..Change it to adb and apps. Tap 7 tine in about/build to get developer option
