Sleep issues possible solution - G Tablet General

I'm working on a new sleep issue theory. very severe button bounce.
For the past 24 hours, I have been waking my gtab by placing the right end against my chest, and using a finger on the power switch, I jab the button as hard and as fast as I can.
This has so far solved the wake to birds problem. If you have this problem, try the above, as hard as brief as you can, and see if it helps.
I am a handheld hardware designer, and I REALLY do not like the metal snapdisk under tape style of button used for the power button, they do not have good life, and degrade with time.
Please post your results. May be worth a designed fix.
Jim

All my sleep/screen issues were resolved after re flashing clemsyn kernel on VEGan. I was not having any issue with TNT and moved to VEGAn and had issue every time the screen timed out.
When I would touch the power button it was either already powered off/rebooting, not waking up or not giving me the menu. Since kernel reflash, one quick push works every time.

Various roms/kernels and complete wipes have affected the problem, but none totally solved it. I'm looking for folks that currently have the problem to test this for me.
Also, if I'm on the right path, more and more gtabs are going to start to have sleep issues as the crappy buttons fail.
My wife's GTab worked flawlessly from the box for almost 2 months, now. Same kernel/rom as mine. But in the past week, she has started to get "the birds" when she pushes the power button. This trick works on hers, too.
Thanks!

Nobody else having wake from sleep issues? reboot instead of wake?

I had many sleep issues last week. Well, actually my Gtab (tnt 4.2.2), not me..
I found a temporary solution that works ok for me for a few days. Go to Android market and search for "Power Button" (there are paid version and free version). I use the free version.
Instead of pressing the POWER button to sleep or turn off the screen, I click on the "power button widget" to place my gtab to sleep. Then, I press the "VOLUME" button to turn it back on. Somehow, I found that the "POWER" button is either too sensitive or insensitive.
Good luck!

I too have had issues w/ the power button. Am currently testing sleep fixes, but really always thought in the back of my mind it might be a power button issue.
3 days ago I had my tab sitting in my Malata dock, set the alarm to wake up, went to bed 4 hrs later and my screen was black.
hit the volume rocker and no screen. hit the power button...no boot. held the power button...no change. kept pushing buttons randomly and tablet finally rebooted after 30 mins of dinking around w/ the buttons.
I also have issues w/ the power button getting pressed w/ my chest. sometimes it powers down, sometimes it goes to sleep.
tested w/ button pushing styles.
1. quick press will either put it to sleep, or give the prompt window. It's random.
2. long press will produce the same results.
3. quick press to go to sleep then quick press again to wake, then quick press gives option window of sleep or shut down.
cannot replicate any sequence as each type of press gives different results.
I was beginning to think my sleep issue was software, but it may seem to be an issue w/ the power button.

I wonder if its a memory leakage issue?
It happens to me but I assume its all the apps running, some trying to access the net while asleep . For me its not button related: its a crashed system. Sometimes reboot is longer.

this is a known issue. If you wait it eventually wakes up, reading over the dev change log this was mentioned. Not the button, but it might be if it keeps being over pressed

I have tried the "tap tap" app (power button) app + using the volumn to wake up my tablet. It has been working for a few days without any issues and around 50+ (sleep + wake).

I also noticed that I only have the issue when connected to power adapter.
Running from battery does not produce the issues above, only while connected to adapter.
That seems more like a hardware related power management issue.

I've only noticed the power off /sleep problem when docked.
I also have no idea how I get it to wake up, I usually just mash random buttons for a bit and it boots.

Same here, the tap tap app works great for me. It shouldn't be necessary, but it's not that big of a deal and something I can live with for the price I paid for the tablet.

I installed Tap Tap and it works great for going to sleep. How do you get the Volume to wake up the tab? Is there another app to install?

It seems that rebooting after sleep is depending on the what the apps do. On TNT 2.4 by roebeet, installing Google skymap will cause it to reboot when trying to resume from sleep.
On 4.2.5, installing TScalibration causes the same problem. I had to restore from a backup to fix it. It seems that if the app dives deep into the hardware, the problem occurs.

I didn't do anything, it just works that way, I hit the volume down key and the tablet wakes up...

I just got a new gTab and installed TnT Lite 4.3.2 last night. Anytime my screen turns off the device is done, I can't wake it back up. Tap Tap App turns the screen off but pressing the volume or power button doesn't bring it back. Just a long press on the power restarts the device.

I've run across something potentially interesting (or perhaps already known, speaking as a wooting noob), but I had Pandora playing once when I put my gtab to sleep and had the waking problem. I could still hear music, but no physical or capacitive button would wake the system back up. Ended up holding down the power button for a few seconds to turn off, then again to boot it.
I can't consistently reproduce the issue, but maybe it's a button problem more than a sleeping problem. btw this was on TnTL 4.3.2.

I just tried that and had the same issue. Music kept playing, clicking on the volume rocker would make the volume go up and down but nothing would bring the display back on.
I can reproduce this behavior anytime my screen turns off.

I wanted to update my experience... I've switched to running the cyanogenmod 7 beta2. The sleep issue has gone from something that happens anytime the screen turns off to being a random occurrence. I've gone an entire day without seeing it at all and the next day it has happened a couple times.

While I certainly agree that the power button is somewhat squirrely, I've found that installing "Load Monitor" and setting it up to prevent deep sleep remedies the sleep issue.
I just reflashed Vegan last night and had the "sleep of death" problem consistently. Put Load Monitor on and the issue goes away.

Alarm doesn't go off when in sleep mode

Hi, I've seen this problem in other places, but no answer to it yet:
I've always used my phone as my alarm, but I get an unexpected sleep-in this morning when the alarm didn't go off! I've just tested it, and putting the phone to "sleep" by pressing the power button seems to prevent the alarm from going off.
If I don't press the power button (which I started doing as it locks the keypad really easily), the screen never goes off. I guess that's just a setting.
Will try again for tomorrow morning, without putting sleep on. But is this a bug or a "feature", anyone know?

Nope. Mine is working perfectly even in "Sleep Mode".

mine works fine too.
as for the fact that the screen never goes off, that can be adjusted if you go to settings/ power and/or settings/ system/ backlight/.
What software do you have installed?
I used to use PocketZenPhone, however it was mucking up the alarms.
Clean your notification queue is the other thing. Pocket Mechanic is good for this.
Well it woke me up this morning - but it still doesn't work if I lock the keys by single-pressing the power button. It does work with the red end-call key to lock the phone after a long key press. Less usable, but some mornings I just have to wake up!

I have no specific configuration. I set my alarm for the 5 working days with sound and vibration, press the power button, and no problems at all.
Ensure that you set the right time, example: morning instead of afternoon.
Play a bit to become familiar with it.

[Q] sleeping problem on gtablet

First I want to thanks xda and the great folks that made this tablet really useful and fun.
I am wondering if anyone else having the problem where when you press the power button to put the device to sleep, but the device does not quite go to sleep. I notice that if I press the capacitive buttons within 2 minutes of pressing the power button, the device would wake up again. I have tnt lite 2.2 installed. Any fix for that?
You can hold the power button for a couple seconds then release...you should see a menu with a sleep option
Yeah, I see the problem. And even telling it to sleep with the power button doesn't completely solve it- tapping on the home button for a while wakes up the screen.
But, as some people say, it's not a bug- at least if your power button dies, you have an alternate way of turning on the thing
My problem is with a timeout of 2 minutes, if I let it time out, the thing shuts down, not sleeps.

[Q] Odd issue I started having all of a sudden

Just over the past 2 days my GTab would go to sleep and refuse to wake up. Hitting the volume rocker did not wake it up and neither did hittng the power button. So I set the screen timer to never and set it in my Malata dock and had it sitting there running clock. After 2 or so hrs. (was not in the room) tab shut itself down.
Took about 30 min of hitting the volume and power button repeatedly before it decided to reboot.
Is this something to be concerned about? is my tab about to brick itself? It just happened all of sudden and I was caught of guard.
I have been running TnT lite 4.2 since purchase with no issue outside of market. Now all of sudden this.
Should I roll the rom back to stock and start over? or is there something I need to be looking at?
I know I can adjust the screen timer, but is there an actual "sleep" setting I can adjust?

Hey, I don't know if this might help. I read this on the Nvidia dev. page a while back concerning the Tegra 250 & Tango board which is what I believe we have in the G Tablet (I could be wrong!)
"Due to a problem with the battery charge controller on some Tango units, you must charge the battery ever 2-3 weeks. If you find that the battery is plugged into the charger but remains at <7% charge, please try charging the battery for 6-12 hours. If the battery remains at <7%, please contact NVIDIA as the battery needs to be replaced.
In certain power saving configurations, touching the screen or "Android buttons" at the top of the device is not adequate to wake the device. To work around this, try inserting or ejecting the SD Card to wake the device. Failing that, you will need to reset or power cycle the Tango. Alternatively, please set the screen timeout to 30 minutes (Menu->Settings->Display->Screen Timeout)."
I have no idea if this will help, but hopefully it will.
Good Luck.
Thanx for that info. I did try pulled the SD card thinking that might force it to reboot, but it did nothing. The unit was is in fact shut down, not sleeping. It took alot of button pushing to get the unit power on. Now that it's up and running again, I have gone through all the sleep settings and it still happens. The longer I let it sleep, the more likely it shuts itself down.
Gonna call viewsonic today and see if I can get any help from their and.

Power button not always waking from sleep on first press

Since the last update it seems that when I try to wake my surface from sleep, often the first press of the power button doesn't wake it and I have to press it again. Doesn't seem to be based on how hard or where I press on the button, and I'm extremely careful with my electronics so it hasn't been dropped or damaged.
Anyone else having this problem?
I've noticed this too, I just assumed it was my device being odd. I've actually thought it was dead and went to plug it in only to have it come on with like 70% battery.
reset it
go to settings->change PC settings->General->Refresh your PC without affecting your files.
i deleted the filed windows.old later and it is all good

its the new firmware...
After the recent upgrade you have to a long press to turn it on...
Same thing happening for me too. Not all the time but some time.
I noticed that it actually works on the first press, but takes some time to do. You just press it a second time before it can start the screen. May be caused by the new update though.
EDIT:
It takes about the same time to wake up like opening the touch/type cover. Maybe it got something to do with that?
1. Could be you're not pressing it firmly enough
2. Are you doing it right after you hibernate/sleep/shut it down? Because it takes a while if you do that.
3. Could be a faulty power button
4. I've had / noticed no problems in delay with the power button (could be it's such a insignificant thing to me that I don't seem to notice it)
I have de same problem since last update
Same Problem here.
I've occasionally seen this on my surface pro too. I think it mainly happens when I close the device and it goes to sleep or whatever and I try to turn it on again pretty quickly. But when you think about it, this is the same way a regular notebook would respond because it is still shutting itself down while you are trying to start it back up. We have just been spoiled with phones and tablets and expect an instant response.
If it is happening from a cold boot, then there might be some type of mechanical issue with your surface, because I've never had that problem.
it depends for me, if it is in sleep mode, clicking it once will wake it immediately, if it is hibernated, you need to hold it a little bit longer, it just behaves exactly like laptop's power button, if it is plugged, pressing once will turn it on too.
I have noticed the power button issue since the last update, I've also noticed my keyboard seems to disconnect as well if I use the device flat..
Same for me, but only if I didn't use it for some time.

This! Sometimes my keyboard goes wild and starts writing the last letter I typed in an endless loop (until I disconnect the touchtype keyboard
me too. to wake the device from deep sleep need a long press.
just a short press or use windows button is required if screen just turned black.
i called microsoft customer care and their devices did it too.
must be result of a recent patch
Do they consider it to be a bug though?

[Q] Power button faulty only when device is on

I appear to have trouble with my device's power button. I have a Pantech Sky Vega Racer 2 A830S which I took out of the box after a month in storage. It seemed okay the first few hours, but I started to notice that I could NOT put the phone into sleep when pressing on the power button once. It works like 1/10 presses. Sometimes, it even seems to do an extended hold even after just pressing once since the "power off, restart and sound profiles" popup appears.
Thankfully, the power button isn't doesn't seem to have a problem when the phone is off. When the phone is off, I can turn on the phone 100% of the time. Heck, when I remove the battery for a few minutes and turn on the phone again, the power button functions perfectly and I can sleep and wake with just a single press, no matter how fast I do it. Half an hour later it starts going haywire again. It appears this problem is truly isolated to when the phone is turned on. What could the problem be? It doesn't appear to be the physical power button mechanism. Could it be the battery or something power related shorting the buttons or something? The problem seems to be electrical in nature and I'm at the end of my wits here.
Any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Yeah I'd get some can air for computers and spray it. You may just have a piece of dirt lodged in there. In the mean time you could download an app that can put your device to sleep when you click on it I believe.
