[Q] Nexus S or Desire HD, what would you choose? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All.
First sorry in advance if this is the incorrect forum.
I really can't make up my mind what handset to go for, and I'm wondering if you guys can point me in the right direction...
Argh, they both seem like very good handsets!
Nice screen or 720p recording,
Gingerbread or FM Radio,
Sense UI or clean stock,
Gyro or DOH!!!

IMHO just get whatever has the best battery life. Theyre both great and Xda will have what u need in software for either

It honestly just depends on you.
Think about what options you would use more and go from there.
I picked the Nexus S for 3 reasons.
1. AMOLED LCD
2.Direct updates from google
3. Quality
Sure 720p recording would have been nice and I'm not sure why it wasn't included, but the question for me was how often do you really record video ? Not often enough. But I do stare at the LCD screen for oh about 3 hours a day.
Both are great phones, the Nexus S is a tad bit more powerful.
You can't go wrong with ether phone but I'd personally choose the nexus S. ( Hence why I own one. This was my exact dilemma) ( well Nexus S or Inspire 4g)

Thanks guys!
I think the Nexus S it is then.

adding to the list, i'd like the nexus more co's of the front facing camera.

Nexus S of course
Desire HD is not even a comparison

This is like deja vu for me...lol.
Its the exact choice i was faced with back in december before i got my nexus. I was soooo close to going with the desire hd. But i didnt obviously.
The main single reason i picked the nexus s? Get ready for it....
Battery! Yep, i really wanted the desire hd as im a big htc/sense ui fan when it comes to smartphones. I had the hero as my previous android. Still got it around somewhere. But anyway, the 1230 mah battery totally put me off. Coming from the hero i knew how power hungry android and htc handsets were.
I mean, come on...a 4.3 inch super lcd running android with only 1230 mah battery? I just read around and came to the decision to go with the nexus s.
In terms of general performance, from what ive read and seen, both phones are more or less equal in the power and speed department. Apart from the gpu that is! Nexus takes it in that department quite comfortably, but i dont really care that much about that.
Ive come to the conclusion that complex 3d games on touchscreen smartphones just doesnt really do it for me. Always too awkward.
I really wanted the desire hd... oh well.

that's a 50% / 50% split i'll say
the main reason is because the SNS is pretty bare-bone feature wise, compared to the other choices out in the market

That was my 2 choices too. Went with Nexus S for 3 reasons 1) battery life 2) SAMOLED and 3) Google updates. Front camera was a bonus.

Yeah, I used to have the original Desire before my iPhone 4 and I loved the oled screen.
It's a shame HTC have replaced it with bog standard LCD displays.
Anyway, iPhone 4 has been sold... I'm coming back to Android!!! Whooo

How much did you sell your iPhone 4 for? I need to put mine up on Craigslist or Kijiji when i have time.

Checked out both Saturday just gone, NS won, I am really pleased with mine. Really pleased. Finding new stuff out all the time and coming from the Hero its just a completely different class of phone.

Latest Best Phone Poll

I have been using Samsung Omnia i900 for last one year guys. Now i intend to get a new phone but there seem to be alot of options out there and it made me confuse. Everyone has an edge over the other in some regard.
I almost went to get an HD2 , My reason being that it can run BOTH OS, WinMo 6.5 and Thanks to dev at xda it can also run Android almost as well. And i am a freak in tryin all the new stuff related to diff OS, so that gives me an edge for HD2, however its touch screen although capacitative wasnt as impressive as iphone 3gs.
And i m not sure how good android is, would the phone still be upgraded.
Please vote for what you think is going to be overall a better choice to go for now with regards to,
OS
Apps
Hardware
Future Development
Regards
Please do also give ur reasons why u suggest a particular phone
Really need help deciding coz i m confused
I would go with the iPhone 4 simply because front facing camera, hd recording, super amoled screen, great gaming device, sleek new design, and the best new "feature" added.. THE DEATH GRIP!

i agree with ipanda, the hd2 is good but its excessively large screen mixed with the type of lcd it has means the colours are all washed out, the galaxy s has good multi touch and games but the gps is crap, the iphone cant get a signal and the nexus one is just a desire without the optical trackpad and less ram lol
umm Nexus One is also abit cheaper i guess.... Optical trackpad doesnt really matter i guess... but currently its official software doesnt support Multi-TOuch which Sux.
Galaxy doesnt have a Camera FLASH... HOW the hell can Samsung miss that ... LOL
I am tilted for Desire.. But tell me one thing. Is the Android stuff really cutomizable? How about apps like superb 3d games in iphone.. Does android market has similar stuff?
And the MAIN Qs for me...... Whats the future for Desire? I mean new ROMs and New Android OS v3.0 or so will be available for desire or atleast custom roms maybe ?
I heard Android 3.0 is comin after xmas... i really want a device which can be updated with time
Eh... uh.... HTC Desire HD
hey...
and HTC EVO 4G???
my vote is for HD2..
I see I will have to raise my voice a little, HTC DESIRE HD IS GOING TO BE ANNOUNCED 15TH SEPTEMBER, IT WILL HAVE 4X THE POWER OF HTC DESIRE AND 8MPX CAM WITH DUAL LED FLASH. ALSO IT WILL HAVE AN AMAZING 4.3 INCH SCREEN AND ANDROID 2.2
IT WILL BE MOST PROBABLY CHEAPER AND WILL HAVE BETTER BATTERY LIFE. AND AT LAST, HDMI AND KICKSTAND.

http://www.androidcentral.com/sprint-epic-4g-review
Hopefully my link worked. If carriers are not a problem, then I think Sprint's Epic 4g is the best phone out right now. From what I have read there is no GPS problem. It also has a larger slide out QWERTY than Droid 2,it has camara flash, and 4g - if your in covrerage area. Lag problems are also gone. There is the ability to cut off touchwiz in favor of android launcher as well. On my Captivate, the camara takes great photos without flash so camara quality is superb. Plus it has about the most capable CPU you can find coupled with the best gpu available. I bought the iphone4 on day 1 and returned it on Captivates release day and have not regretted it. And yes, its very customizable. Just pick a carrier with options because you can always trade it out within 30 days.

Android supports multitouch since 2.0, but the touchscreen sensor on nexus one is too bad to report multitouch.

Completely bull****.
No Evo 4G option? Now that the bugs have been worked out it's tits.
yeah my last phone was a vogue so I don't have much to compare it to, but there are already people saying they took back their epics after having AMOLED burn-in issues, bad buttons, no gps, etc.
Out of those phones, I think the HD2 has the best value considering its around $100 cheaper than the other ones, but with similar hardware specs. However, I've never owned any of those phones, so I could very well be wrong.
On a side note, if you are really into putting on different OS's and would like a change, you could take a look at the n900 (slower processor but could be overclocked) or even upcoming Nokia N9 (Though it seems like Nokia phones don't receive much love in this forum) . They're going to have the Meego OS, and developers have also ported Android 2.2 to run on the N900 aswell.
Seems like competetion here is between HD2 and Galaxy S, But there is a price difference of 200$ between these two phones, WHich is kinda alot
Extra 200$ for AMOLED 16 M screen, i guess thats the only hardware part where Galaxy/Desire are better than HD2. A small diff in RAM too, but otherwise all hardware specs are similar.
HD2 probably gets bad battery life with android and you could run into some weird bugs, they've done a great job with android, its what prolonged my touch diamonds life. Win mobile is dead, haven't looked back since I got my Evo. Best phone I've ever had, no regrets but there's always something new coming out.

HD2. Got 4 microsd cards, 3 running different builds of android the other running win mo. Depending on my mood or need for a particualr app (sat nav/games etc..) I just boot into whatever suits, HTC & Microsoft pretty much ditched this phone after the US launch yet XDA have given it a fresh start and pushed it back to the top of the smartphone list IMO. If you like playing about with your phone then there is no other option, the others are just phones in comparison
I have been usin WinMo devices for last 2 years or so, but i guess WinMo is kinda dead end now. Even if i get HD2, i will like to use Android on it for a change, So why not just get an Android set with No bugs
Well i am still compiling up my money... got 400$ by now That shud suffice for HD2, but i guess i gotta wait and save some more for Galaxy or Desire.
Why are people voting Galaxy and Not Desire ? I mean its almost the same hardware.... and Desire has a bigger community here i guess.... Htc phones usualy get new updates while i m not sure samsung will keep up the updates for their phones :S

I do. I love the framework from my old epic, especially the camera w 720p recording. Its mostly why I chose this very close keyboardless version (epics bulk was embarressing). Being a stock dev phone is cool, but the more options the merrier.

Yes. The only exception was the N1 that added 720p but it was capped at 30 FPS i believe? Not sure.
But the NS is missing a hardware piece that allows 720p recording.
Edit:
Considering one of the lead Android devs said on his twitter that 720p recording is not available on the Nexus S due to hardware bandwidth limitation, I tend to believe him.

When i rooted my epic and used Simply AOSP ROM i didn't have a complaint besides the phones bulk. I wish it were as easy as ripping off the keyboard underneath
but yeah, the nexus is a much more fluid device all around, but the camera blows
I have had an Epic and now NS4G and i would not go back. TW framework made the Epic slow and the battery was atrocious in comparison to the NS. To each their own, but you aint takin me back there....IM NOT GOING BACK!!!!
Nexus may not be the best at any one thing, but the total package beats almost every other Android set on the market.

id say the nexus is a decent and very stable device. It excels at getting the job done without hesitation and i really do like that.
thinking about the 720p camera from the epic compared to this standard camera, i've come to conclude the nexus is a DEV phone and not ALL android phones are high-end with high-def capture ability. When you have a dev phone, you want to develop and test on it and be assured what you have created will work on virtually ALL android devices... so it makes sense why they would have done that. I just miss having amazingly detailed pictures a lil
Pretty much. I toy with my phone too much to care much for all the OEM overlay stuff. I had my Epic for three months and now my wife has it. It is a great phone and the pictures are very nice, but I do not take a ton of pics and normally have a point and shoot on me anyway, which does 720p and has great quality pics, so my phone is always the last resort.
I like the hassle free goodness of the Nexus and the abilty to "just get the update now". I am an impatient SOB more than a camera phone snob.

More than likely...One of the benefits of having four lines on my Sprint account is annual upgrades...I was offered a free upgrade to the EVO3D and am turning it down, because I want a dev phone. I will wait on Nexus 3.
I don't miss the buggyness of TW but you have to admit the added functionality it offers. I sold my SGS because I was so frustrated with the limitations and now that I have the NS I have to admit, this is the fastest phone I've ever used period. Even out of the box! I was a bit hesitant thinking it would be a re badged SGS but I am amazed what good software can do with hardware. Nothing like the SGS at all.

Farewell to the sensation..Hola to the Galaxy nexus.

Just wanted to say bye to my friends i met through the sensation. Its been an extremely fun ride, from s-on to s-off i've been through all of it. I work at verizon now, and ever since i touched the galaxy nexus, i knew i had to have it. Most of you don't find it as a huge upgrade from the sensation, and when i agree to a certain extent, the galaxy nexus, is well, a nexus device. I never owned one and now that i finally got a job i am buying one. been with android since the g1 and never have owned a nexus and now that i have the opportunity to actually own one, i will (especially since im getting it for 437.48 USD off contract for gsm ).I hope i see all of you on that side as well. In the same boat, got my Nexus over the weekend. I think it's a slight upgrade, made more pronounced by the direct-from-Google-Software and the development community. Dont get me wrong, the Sensation has a pretty good Dev community (compared to the anemic Epic 4G, which I originally came from), but the Nexus devices always get the latest and greatest earliest.
Good decision and good luck! GN is a much better phone than the Sensation IMO. I'd like to make the switch too but I have to ride out the rest of this darn contract. Transformer Prime for me instead.

The "bug" with the Nexus One wasn't really a bug. The touch screen that they picked wasn't really capable of real multitouch. It was only capable of doing a certain multitouch gestures like pinch-to-zoom. So it was a hardware limitation, not a bug.
Hopefully this time it is indeed a bug, and could be fixed with firmware/driver update.

Having owned the Galaxy Nexus (HSPA+ version) for a week, I can't say if I like it more than the Sensation.
The biggest selling points of this phone is the screen and ICS. The screen is definitely gorgeous. Best screen on the market, period. But it is a battery hog. My GN's battery life is noticeably worse than Sensation's. And "battery usage" tells me that 50+ % of the battery usage came from the screen.
While ICS is more polished than previous versions of Android, it just isn't polished enough. For example, the ICS contact app has WebOS/Sense-like feature that integrate your contacts' various accounts info into one place. But it doesn't do it automatically. Some of my contacts are listed as separate contacts (with the same name). Unlike Sense, it doesn't automatically ask me to merge the contacts all at the same time, and I had to join them into one manually (Click a contact, press menu, choose edit, press menu, choose join, choose which one to join. And if a contact is listed more than twice, you have to do the above to merge each of his/her account).
The ICS dialer also lacks the T9/SmartDialing feature in the Sense dialer.
The camera sucks. The zero shutter lack is a gimmick. Yes, it shoots fast, but most of the time it doesn't auto-focus properly before taking the picture. Also, you can't set ISO manually, and there is limited options of manual control.
Lock screen is a joke. While they advertise that the camera app is now available from the lock screen, so that you can access quickly, this doesn't work if you have set a lock-pin/pattern/face unlock. With Sense, even if you have a pin/pattern set, you still have the Sense lock screen with quick access when you turn the screen on. On the GN, once you set the pin/pattern, that's what you see the first thing you turn the screen on. You don't get to see the camera app quick access button.
And of course this phone have the usual Samsung design language - very plasticky. To be fair, it feels better than a lot of plastic Samsung phones. But still, it feels cheap and fragile compared to the Sensation. I dropped my Sensation once and scratched the metal case. I'm sure that my GN wouldn't survive such a fall.
The phone isn't really faster than the Sensation in openning and running apps. It feels faster because of the newly implemented hardware accelerated UI. Scrolling is noticeably smoother. The only exception is the browser. Webpages load really quick. I'm not sure if this have to do with the TI SoC, or the ICS browser is just significantly better. Texts don't get reflowed after zoom-in though, which is one feature that I really miss.
All in all, I'm not sure if I would keep the GN. Sensation + ICS could be a much better overall phone. I maybe much better off holding onto my Sensation until next summer for some other ICS phone with a better camera and a non-plastic case.
In my opinion the GN feels very cheap. The Sensation is far better there.
Turn the screen to its lowest brightness, you can see some darker lines across the screen. Once you noticed that, you see it every time - a no go for me.
On the other hand, it is very brilliant, and a bit sharper, but I like the Sensations more.
Battery sucks, Android.OS has mor consumption than display.... weird.
I will keep the Sensation, too bad it has only 768MB RAM, but I think its enough.
too bad..you should've waited when they release the list of the new devices coming in 2012
Will miss you greatly...so sad to see all of these sensation people leaving...the sensation is still a pretty damn good phone guys...have some fun with the nexus.
Bye bye! Hope all goes well for you guys with the GN!
I got pretty attached to the Sensation. ^_^

Have a Thunderbolt and Verizon is Offering me a Replacement to Another Phone

Guys...
I have a Thunderbolt and due to the length of time I have been with Verizon and issues I have had, they are giving me a new phone of my choice (not a refurb).
What phone would you all go to (those who root and use custom ROMs) if you had your choice of any phone. Keep in mind I have always liked Sense Rom's but have never had a Motorola phone or a Nexus.
Please let me know!!!!
Thanks so much and have a happy new year!!!

I'm personally not very fond of Sense & Motoblur UI. I would suggest the Galaxy Nexus, especially if they are giving you a new phone (hopefully free for you) and one of the major reasons why I would is first and foremost the HD Super AMOLED screen in general PLUS it having a 1280x720 resolution on that beautiful 4.6" screen (black pixels actually turn off instead of illuminating and looking wasted out and colors are 10X more vibrant), the 1.2GHz dual-core processor, PURE Google phone so no custom UI and you get all the updates before any other phone, Android 4.0 (Mmm), 1850mAh battery (soooo much better than the Thunderbolt) and 1080p video recording.
For me that is the only phone that I would go with, especially as far as what phones are out now on Verizon (which aren't that impressive). That HD Super AMOLED screen is just too sweet to pass up!

In my opinion I would say so because the Razr has an ugly amount of bezel around the LCD and the resolution is only 960x540 and has the Motoblur overlay and the Rezound is not too bad of a phone, I am just not too much of a fan of the Sense overlay either. I'm not sure but I think quad-core phones won't appear until around Quarter 2 or so of 2012.
Waiting is always not a bad idea, but the Galaxy Nexus is definitely worth it, again IMO. haha hopefully I was some help.

That's pretty messed up. If that's the case though, The HTC Rezound is a no brainier. It's similar spec'd and the display is gorgeous.
Think I should wait for the spring and keep my tbolt? Or is the Rezound or Nexus really worth it??
I think the nexus is definitely worth it.

Find out the most expensive phone they'll give you. Take that value, presuming it's lower than the Nexus, and offer to pay the difference.
howd you get a replacement? They sent me like 5 refurbs. Then finally they sent me a bionic, refurb, and I'm not real thrilled with it. It keeps forcing updates then failing and losing all my data. Kinda tired of dealing with these issues after paying 2400+ a year. At this point I would like to see if the rezound is any better, but they want me to shell out another 250 for the "privilege" of an early upgrade.

I have a business account with several phones which allows me certain "perks"
Don't get a Charge
I had 2 thunderbolts and then did the charge when the random reboot started. Waited for the TB and glad I went back no comparison. Slow, everything, gps, data, email etc. Had a TB a month now and loving it.
I liked my bolt before it was rooted, now that it's rooted I love the sh*t out of it....but if you're in the mood for a change, I agree with the recommendation for the Nexus. I got to play with one for a good hour or so last week and really fell in love. I'm not 100% sure if it was the hardware or ICS that really appealed to me, but since you can get both at the same time, why not go for it?
I personally like the RAZR quite a bit too, but all things being equal, Nexus seems like the way to go.
I'm in the wait crowd. I want the specs of the nexus, but its got some important omissions. The GPU isn't up to snuff for a brand new top of the line phone, and its got no expansion slot for a microsd card. And, did I read the battery isn't user changeable?
I was excited by the nexus, but if the SGS3 is quad core, Super amoled HD (RGB, not pentile) and it can take a memo card, its worth the wait. I'm not so excited about the nexus since it came out.

Hey, sorry about being away, for a while, long story. But the first one that I bought came with bad light leaks. The second one came badly scractched and dented. The next one was the one I had the bulk of the time, but the headphone jack ended up dieing. I was sent a replacement for that which came with a broken ear piece. The final one came with a damaged battery cover, which I just swapped with the previous phone, so no big deal.
The biggest complaint I have had is that they tried to charge me for one of the phones I had sent back, which took at least a half dozen calls and many hours to get fixed. They had sent me text messages saying that they had recieved the phone, but then a series of text messages saying that they were going to charge me for the phone not being returned. It took taking to a manager to check the future bills and a couple forms filled out for them to refund the charge.
More later...

I'm on my 7th or 8th Thunderbolt. I've been having intermittent POP3 email problems ever since I've had the phone(s). I went to a Verizon store a couple of times recently when I had the issue and noticed that with the exact same settings, the Galaxy and the Rezound worked while the Thunderbolt did not. The Bionic and Razr also did not work.
Anyway, they won't let me have anything except for a Charge or Revolution. I think the Revolution is a lesser phone than the Thunderbolt, and I don't know if my POP3 account would work on the Charge. I would've tried it out, but either the store didn't have it or it wasn't working if they did.
Has anyone come across this same issue before? If so, what amount (and nature) of convincing did it take to get them to offer something better?

Droid Maxx seems like a contender... just sayin. I have had my T-bolt for a year now and never had any issues with it

Any complaints about the Nexus S?

I've been considering trading my HTC Sensation for a Samsung Nexus S. Do you guys have any complaints about the phone hardware wise, build quality etc? The wifi death grip on this phone is about to nearly drive me insane.
My friend has the nexus s and its awesome but I say replace your sensation with HTC or T-Mobile and just root and load a custom rom to make it smooth/smoother.

Did that already, phone is as smooth as a baby, but the wifi issue is hardware related, and oddly enough i use my phone landscape 80% of the time, which means wifi is non existent unless I hold it awkwardly. T_T.
The Nexus S is smooth. But the Sensation XE, That I own is smoother than my old Nexus S. With more time and optimization the Sensation will be alot smoother.
That's exactly what I did, I had a Sensation for a few days as an upgrade from Orange, but when I saw a Nexus S on special offer and got one for my daughter, I found it much lighter and the screen better than the Sensation. So I bought one for myself and put the Sensation on Ebay.
I also like the Nexus S OS because it is clean without any manufacturers customisations.
I updated mine from 2.3.1 to 2.3.6 stock ROM. Will wait for the OTA ICS update later this month.
I have found the WiFi to be a bit weak, this apparently is a known problem, otherwise just feels faster than the Sensation.
In future I'm going to stick to the Google phones because I prefer a vanilla Android install.

Weak because of a software issue? I know the Sensation had a problem like that and a wifi range patch fixed that. Right now I'm seeing now downfall to trading my sensation for the nexus

I had a sensation and traded it for my current nexus s. Not one ounce of regret.
I've had several android phones and this nexus s hands down is the best. I can see myself having this phone for a couple years and, for me, that says a lot.

i really want to do the same as you right now. the sensation is getting a little too boring and there is a lack of development on the roms i want. do you guys suggest the nexus s or to keep the sensation? and does the single/dual core have much of a difference?

So far, I've seen no reason to not trade, benchmarks are about the same if not better. One last question, hows the camera?
Only complaint: dog slow compared to GSII. On the plus side, it has such a better form factor and it feels better in my hand.

yeah, how is the camera, its 5mp compared to the 8mp in the sensation and theres no hd recording, but its still great for picture taking isnt it?
I had to make the same decision and I haven't looked back. One thing about the sensation that drove me insane was the touchscreen sensitivity. I would always miss keys on the keyboard and I'd have to press harder than I did on my old vibrant. The nexus s has a much better digitizer and is much more responsive over all IMO. Comparable to the galaxy s (not surprising). I will warn you, the screen isn't the sharpest, but the saturated colors and deep blacks are worth it IMO. Aside from that, I can't think of any downsides.

Quality seems great to me, so, switching it is for me!
Thats the thing with HTC. I love the build and Sense (less so since I got ICS on my Nexus S) but the screens are a POS and thats the thing that you interact with the most the screen. It really makes or breaks a phone.
HTC really need to get an Amoled supplier or something similar, else they will fall way behind Samsung in the next few years.
I will not touch another HTC phone because of this.
I've never actually compared my screen to the nexus s. So to me the screen quality seems fine haha. . Although, I used to have the HD7, and the quality of that screen was HORRID.
I had a Hero and the screen was nice.
Then I got a HD2 about 6 months ago and put Android on it. It ran it well but the screen was an abomination. Also, the digitizer was poor as it missed buttons pressed all the time. So I sold it and kept the Hero for another 6 months.
Then I saw the Nexus S for £199 and couldn't resist.
I can't get over how good this phone is.

Amazing
Got the nexus s last week and what a phone. Super Amoled screen with contour display kicks ass. Very fast GPU
