Straight Talk Unlimited with Captivate - Captivate General

My dad canceled my phone service so I was thinking of using the Straight Talk Unlimited pre-paid plan on my Captivate. Will I be able to call, text, and use 3G with this without problems on my Captivate?

No. Straight talk is CDMA through Verizon. End of story

Are they GSM?

Wrong! It's mixed CDMA (Verizon) and GSM (AT&T) depending on the phone. There's a ginormous HowardForum thread on using (GSM) iPhones on ST, which should guide the OP in using any AT&T Android as well.

Straight Talk only supports GPRS data, so not really useful for a smartphone.

Who cares? You need an internet, or a speedy one? And GSM networks have larger coverage, than UMTS...

Because I've used it, and it never goes above GPRS.

Straight Talk is on three different networks (yes, T-Mobile also, in some parts!) overlapping all over the country... Your experience in one place isn't representative of the entire coverage.
This guy wasn't on GPRS.

I'm using my Captivate on ST and I'm getting 3mg down and 1.2 up. There's others getting better down/up speeds depending on your coverage area. It uses AT&T's 3g network. I was with AT&T prior to ST and my speeds are the same. Basically any GSM phone will work but if it's a T-Mobile phone you'll be limited to EDGE.

it can be done!
Hey i am new here but i found on a different forum a mobileconfig file (for iphones) to set up their phone for straight talk. read in the same place that some people are using iphones and some androids on straight talk. the story is that you have to buy one of the straight talk's smart phones, ie the nokia e71 or whatever its called. the sim cards that are included with these phones are the only ones that will work (with the mobileconfig settings, and the unlimited 45$ plan being mandatory as well) tried looking through the mobileconfig file but i have never seen or used one before, so i am unable to decipher all of the settings... would be great if someone with some know-how with these type of files could decipher them and fill us in on what settings need to be made! here is the mobileconfig file

I too have the Captivate and when I installed a working sim from a ST phone I recived the error "Sim Card Crashed" Can anybody enlighten me as to what is causing this error and if there is a way around it? Thank you very much.

Only the two Nokia smart phones have unlocked SIMs. The rest are locked to the device.

Try simple mobile. Their unlimited plans are cheap and its gsm 3g.

T-Mo bands only. Since the Cap doesn't have 1700 it'll be stuck on EDGE.

now this is what ive been looking for,but how would i do it without spending 200 dollars for a new phone? would a used one from ebay work? or if i found a used sim card from one of the straight talk smartphones?

Well when i was ar best bhy today i noticed they now sell sim kits for h2o and some other company.

Buddy has straight talk sim in iPhone 4. You'll be fine. Just buy E71 phone

Hspa+ on ATT prepaid.

Just was wondering if you guys believe we will be able to get hspa with ATT prepaid.?? Anyone know?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
not any time soon, only a couple markets will have 3g on go phone by the end of march. Until at&t releases prepaid smartphones plans, this will not happen. I have heard that at&t plans to have the entire network (2g and 3g) covered by hspa by the end of 2011. Maybe then will we see some changes.
3G should work on any att phone, gophone or not (assuming there's 3G coverage where you live). HSPA+ definitely won't work, because there are no prepaid HSPA+ features/plans yet.
I used 2 different iPhones on att prepaid. And I got 3g just fine (should work with hspa+ just fine as long as its available in your area). It should work but remember android devices use a lot of data so disable it or make sure that you disable all the apps that sync data.
you cant, it will check the miei number or something and deactivate it
Ok while I know everything works fine on prepaid, no 4g here yet so that much I am not sure. I know after a rom flash you will get a completely different set of APN for prepaid.

No it wont. With pay as you go they don't really care because there is no unlimited data for it. You will not get a txt saying you have the wrong data plan. You wont hear anything from att. Like I said before I used 2 different iPhones on a pay as you go ( the original iPhone and the iPhone 3g). I also used 2 different blackberrys too ( the curve and the storm). Never once did att contact me about the phone I was using. I used that sim card for over a year. Then when i went with a contract account they didn't even change my sim card. I continued to use the same sim card till i got my iPhone 4.

It's not GoPhone, but I have my Inspire working just fine on StraightTalk, $45/month for unlimited everything. The only downside is that you have to purchase a $200 Nokia StraightTalk smartphone to get a compatible SIM (no way around that) and keep it in a drawer for as long as you have service. My data speeds are just as fast as regular AT&T around my area, about 5mb down, 2mb up.

AT&T Go Phone on Inspire?

I've tried searching, but couldn't find an answer, so here goes:
Has anyone tried using their Inspire on AT&T's go phone prepaid service? I went into the AT&T store and noticed that they now have an android phone for their go phone service. I've tried a prepaid sim and it works (though it only has talk and text), but would the $50 unlimited talk, text, and web work for us?

For smartphone users, the data is not included, just the unlimited calling and texting. You must purchase the data seperately and the plans are not so good. $5 for 10mb, $15 for 100mb, $25 for 500mb.

No you cant use unlimited data on. You have to buy data package. 500MB ~ 25$.
So if you have 50$ unlimited just for minutes and sms. I tried to do that but it's not working. More, you have to change APN in order to use data.

Straight Talk has both GSM (ATT) and CDMA (verizon) phones. And you can't use an unlocked inspire with them anymore. The only way to do it before was to buy the $200 nokia phone. The rest of straight talk's gsm phones had sim cards locked to the phones. The nokia did not. But now even the nokia phones lock their sim chips to the phone. And even those with older unlocked sims are being caught by straight talk and having their accounts closed.

I was thinking of doing the same thing myself. But I did some researching on the internet. Hopefully it holds out for you. Let us know if you have any issues down the road.
I'm using my unlock inspire 4g with prepaid service. No problem its working. I don't have data plan I always use wifi.
How did you get the inspire 4g to read the go phone? Because it's not getting any signal from mine. There will be an X over the signal bars. I already unloked the phone.
I have the go phone thing haha it sucks all I have is unlimited txtn it works for me no joke and miui is great cause the option to still connect when data is disabled so no worry about connecting to the internet

I traveled to Thailand earlier this year and used a local sim for voice and data.
You'll likely need to be on a touch wiz ROM. I highly recommend you install one before you leave. You can't go wrong with cleanrom. Beans is also good if you like also roms. I used beans 14 at the time.
You'll need to add the pay as you go global voice and data feature to your plan. You can do that online or over the phone. You'll also need an app to swap apn's to use data on your third party carrier's sim card. I use apn manager pro.
Once you have the new sim, turn off you phone and swap out your Verizon sim. Pop the new one in and power on. You should be connected for voice at least. Now use your apn app to input the new carrier's info. Most of the time you can search for it online, but it's best to get it when you buy your sim.
When you return just replace the sim and return to verizon apn settings. And for the love of all that is holy, don't use your Verizon service overseas. It's expensive.

i'm not sure if they lied - my understanding was that you can easily swap a local SIM in to get access to voice and text, but that data does not work (at least out of the box). there's another post that talks about swapping APNs, which is what you would need to do. i thought that the latest OTA allowed that flexibility though...? i'm rooted and use Beans B14 though, so i don't keep up with OTAs.
for what it's worth, i went to europe recently and used 97 MB over a two week period. i saved all google maps offline before heading there, checked emails and used internet only on wifi, and only used mobile data occasionally when i was out and about in order to look up restaurant reviews and whatnot.
they pro-rated the $25 over half the month so my bill was only $14 more than it would have been normally. for me, at $14 it was worth it so i didn't have to screw around with buying a local SIM and worrying about things not working.

The sim is a small card inserted in the back of your phone next to where you'd put the SD card. It lets you connect to the cellular provider. You have a Verizon sim card in your phone. There are several sizes. The GS3 uses a micro-sim card. If you turn your phone off now and take the back panel off, you'll see it. I can't remember, but it may be under the battery.
If your phone isn't rooted, which it doesn't appear to be, then you won't be able to get data service, but you can still get phone service with an overseas carrier. You can see my earlier post for steps, but all you need to do is have Verizon add the Global Roaming feature to your plan. When you get to Europe, you can buy a micro-sim from one of the local carriers and put some money on a pre-pay plan. Turn off your phone and swap out the verizon sim for the local sim. Turn your phone back on and you'll have voice service.
The APN info needs to be changed to connect to data services after the sim card is changed out, but you need to have a rooted phone for this. You can change that with an app. I use APN Manager Pro. There are several fields you have to enter, but you can get it from the carrier. It's a little like telling your computer what IP server to connect to to get internet access.
Another option entirely is to get a Google voice number and use a service like GrooveIP or Talkatone. You won't have cell service, but you can make and recieve calls using your Google voice number when connected to wifi. This will let you call back to the U.S. for very cheap rates.
The easiest thing would be just call on Verizon using their global roaming feature, but it can get pricey. Ask Verizon for roaming rates in the countries you'll be going to.
[edited for clarity]
just came back from Europe and I was able to buy two prepaid data cards(Wife and I) in Germany(Orange) and Italy(TIM) and was able to get HPSA+ data without any issues, all I had to do is add the APN setting into my phone and I was good to go. I was on CM10.1 and wife on stock rom and didnt have any issue getting them to work. Good Luck

Hey !
So i purchased a Verizon galaxy s3 a few months back on Craigslist. I'm currently living in Mexico so I'm using Telcel Mexico as my carrier.
I rooted it and added the apn for telcel using hiapn and currently internet and data is working but all i'm getting is Edge or 2G speed.
I've looked around and read various different posts, it seems that verizon blocks the the speed.
This is deffinitely a hindrance for me since web browsing is really slow and downloads are even worse. If i flash a different Rom with this be taken care of ? Does anyone know of any other way of dealing with this ?
Please help! I've looked everywhere in vain
I do not think flashing any type of Rom will increase your data speed since it depends on the radio frequenices allowed for your device.

So there is nothing to be done then ?
I can not say for your specific carrier.
But it seems that your apn settings are correct because you are getting edge/2g speeds.
The problem is what frequency Telcel uses for 4g/LTE and the frequency Verizon allows for that device.

I'm sorry, I'm still trying to make sense of all of this. so you're saying it's hardware related, in other words the phone doesn't have the right frequencies to pick up the 4g ? or that verizon has blocked it somehow and that's why it's not working?
if that's the case do you think something can be done to unlock it?
thanks again

I hadn't heard of Verizon throttling international carriers. The first thing I'd check would be coverage area or maybe the service you purchased doesn't include 3G. I've been able to get 3G service internationally.
The Verizon S3 uses [EDIT]:
2G Network CDMA 800 / 1900 - SCH-I535
3G Network CDMA2000 1xEV-DO - SCH-I535
4G Network LTE 700 MHz Class 13 - SCH-I535
If telcel doesn't use CDMA, that could be your problem.
sorry for delay

After investigating it, it seems that TELCEL uses the TDMA 850 / GSM 1900 / UMTS 850 frequency bands for its network. So this would mean that since they use a different frequency for 3g and 4g than my phone there's nothing to be done right ?
Cheers.

Yup, that would be the problem. Here's some info on the differences between the networks.

Verizon offers global roaming there with 3g service in Mexico. They must partner with another network. Here's a list of available service by country:

Here are the specs for the Verizon Galaxy S3:
LTE, CDMA/PCS/1xEVDO Rev. A (800/1900 MHz)
Global: GPRS/EDGE/GSM (850/900/1800/1900); HSPA/UMTS (2100)
I don't know the answer to your question but I use a "Movistar" wireless carrier SIM in Mexico on my Verizon S3 and I get ~150kbps data speed. Its not very fast but at least it's something...
So let me get this straight...
So once I root my phone I can use it for Sprint? Also, does my phone have gsm capability?
No. You can't just use it for sprint. But it is a global capable device and supports international gsm.

[MUST READ] Notice for those trying to use i535 on AT&T/ST

I just looked and the model SCH-I535 will only work on AT&T's 2G/Edge service. I've been looking around for hours how to fix it but after looking at the supported bands for AT&T's LTE and 3G, I have discovered that the Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3 I535 can NOT be used on AT&T's 3G or 4G services.
This would also be correct regarding Straight Talks service unless your using T-Mobile.
THERE IS NO WAY TO GET AROUND THE ISSUE SO DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY IN SCAMS
PROOF:
Check Attachments - Compatible Bands
Check Attachments - What AT&T Supports (3G and 4G)
Hope this helps anyone that has been having issues.
Dunno why people even do this..Only 1 of the bands is the same and it is ancient...There are much better options with t-mobile galaxy devices if you want to keep it cheap thru ST ATT...Plus BYOP thru straight talk uses verizon, so just sign it up thru "straight talk verizon" otherwise I would get a different phone and look at the freq's it can broadcast and recieve on. cause 2g is ancient..If it is the only thing you have then sell it and buy one with the right network.

Verizon S3 on Straight Talk

Just received my SIM card from straight talk for the i535 all I did was go to straight talk web site activate the phone using the phone imei number then start phone with SIM card installed> Once SIM card was activated I restarted the phone and had LTE with no need to setup APN settings.
I just shut off the verizon service right before setting up the phone on ST so I do not know if thats has effected anything but hopefully it doesn't.
Also I had to contact Straight Talk using their facebook page to get the SIM card and it was shipped for free.

Good to know, I get my sim card from straight talk tomorrow. I didn't imagine it was that hard to setup. You did the smart thing and went to facebook, like an idiot I called them and it took well over a week for them to send it

Oh it took them a while to send it to me also. I had even told them to cancel it and thats when I went to Verizon. I was told at one point that the SIM cards should be in stores around December 5th,

That's correct. I am now with straight talk with a VZW S3
All I had to do was get the sim card from straight talk and call them to activate it. It was a pretty simple process

So you didn't have to hack the phone or anything?? Verizon is CDMA and Straight Talk is GSM, how did that work? Especially without setting up a new APN?
Oh and did you get the AT&T or TMobile sim? I think straight talk still has the option for either.

It does but straight talk told me the AT&T and T-Mobile sims won't work for this phone. They sent me a CDMA specific sim card, and cmda phones will indeed work on straight talk, not every single one but most
And no I didn't have to do anything with the phone, didn't have to edit apn settings or anything. I'm still running off the Verizon network

Wait, Straight Talk has Verizon SIM's now??? Meaning Verizon is one of their MVNO's? I always thought it was just TMobile and AT&T and Tracfone leased off Sprint for CDMA based phones.

Tracphone owns straight talk for one. It's a straight talk sim... But they piggy back off all 4 networks. VZW, ATT, TMobile and sprint

Are you referring to me?
I was. However I hooked my Old S3 up for a family member. I can confirm that the VZW S3 will get 4G LTE on the Verizon network with the CDMA Sim that comes with the starter pack. Ran a speed test at full signal strength and had an initial burst for ~9-10 mbs and stabilized at ~5mb both up and down. This is way more than the user of the phone will need but also not a bad number.
For comparison sake my personal phone on a VZW unlimited plan still gets 40+ mbs during speed tests in the same location. Appears that ST is speed limited but at 5mbs still more than 99.9% of users will ever need/notice at one time.

Yea I'm not worried about speed as I'm 99% of the time on wifi so I could care less now. The initial starter pack didn't come with the CDMA sim. Card which is a pain but now it does

Quick question for those that have done this already - I have just ordered the Galaxy S3 I535 from walmart because i'm cheap and it was on special - Would it be wise to at least activate the phone on Verizon and entering the details on ST's site to make sure it will work before getting the sim or just ordering it (they are on special right now for .99c) I'm glad they are doing the CDMA sims because i had read that folks were only getting edge for data using the AT&T sims and was prepared to limit myself to being on the Verizon prepaid plan and just sucking it up...

If its the prepaid version it may not work, the prepaid version doesn't utilize a sim card where as the contract version does

Probably a good idea. I'm truly unsure if it will work or not. I have the S3 contract version and it works great on straight talk. Another user informed me the prepaid version doesn't utilize a sim which in most cases at least for VZW means no 4G
