Tonight Google released Car Home as an independent app in the market. It has a ton of improvements like assignable buttons and drag and drop icons. I can't get it to download with Cyanogen(Koush) nightly 09302010 but I know I can through ADB.
Let me know if you can get it to install through the market.
If u have root explorer just delete car home then install from market
I was able to get it to install from the market on Skyraider Vanilla 3.0 RC3. Works well except for the fact that you cannot assign shortcuts to the customisable buttons (e.g. direct dial shortcuts), only app and navigation shortcuts. Seems like a peculiar oversight.

I wouldn't ask you to post a paid app
I got Car Dock to install from the market after deleting the old car home apk but I cannot see an icon in my apps listing. I checked under Applications-Manage Apps and it is there. Any ideas?
EDIT: Nevermind. AppBrain allowed me to download it. To those who can't get it from the official Market, use AppBrain.
CyanogenMod CarHome Instructions
Car home contains two components, the activity (this is the app we're updating) and the launcher. The activity contains the guts of the program, but the Launcher allows it to show up in the app drawer.
If you're using CM6, you have CarHomeLauncher.apk already in system/app and just need to install the com.google.android.carhome-1.apk file. If you are not using CM6, then you may need to install both the Launcher and the carhome apk if the carhome app doesn't show up in the app drawer.
adb remount
adb shell
mv /system/app/CarHomeGoogle.apk CarHomeGoogle.apk.bak
install attached apks. Let me know if there's issues.
As an aside, both LauncherPro and ADW have the capabilities to create shortcuts for activities, bypassing the need of the Launcher, but it still will not show up in the drawer.
When I installed from the market it put com.google.android.carhome-1.apk in the /data/app folder, is this the correct location?
When I go to the app from appbrain it shows it as installed but the open button is grayed out.
Reading the app comments it looks like you can't launch it independently anymore but will launch when placed in the dock, I have yet to verify this.
Works, but has to be in the dock.
I'm running a Sense ROM (Virtuous 2.7) and I installed the Google Car Home using Appbrain. If you click on the Sense Car Panel App in your drawer, you're presented with a pop-up to choose which app you want to use: Sense Car Panel or Google Car Home. I just checked the "use as default" box and selected the Google Car Home. Now when I click the "Car Panel" icon in my app drawer the Google Car Home launches instead of the Sense Car Panel.
Where is the information that shows this is a product made by google?
If you're using ADW.Launcher, you can make a new Custom Shortcut, choosing ADW's Activity List, then selecting Car Home's main activity CarHome(.CarHome)
You can then launch it fine without any problems without needing a dock. Atleast it works for me...

The key here is to leave the CarHomeLauncher.apk alone in system/app. This way it will show up in the app drawer.
adb remount
adb shell
mv /system/app/CarHomeGoogle.apk CarHomeGoogle.apk.bak
Thats in, now install Car Home from App Brain (don't know why it won't show up in the Market).
Alternatively, APK is attached, although unverified if this works.

I hv installed Google Car Home app yesterday and cannot see it in app drawer, nor in the applications settings despite it is shown in downloads tab in the market app, but open button is inactive. How to run and use it? confused!

I updated my post with a link to a Launcher APK. Install it and it should allow car home to show up in the app drawer. It is from CM6.

Thank you so much tdiman.. it is now working... happy
just wondering why it is not working orginally and why google retrieved it from the market

I added the app from a link I found on droid-life. You don't need a home replacement as they state.....
I simply used BetterCut to place the "activity" of the car home on my screen. Once in I started customizing things like removing the Music Icon (since it doesn't work) and replaced it with Mixzing. I also removed the People Icon and Dialer as I can just use the Voice Search to do everything in the car so I don't need to look at the phone.
My only wishes for this: that you could add toggle widgets (such as Vlingo's Safereader) and that google would allow Bluetooth to initiate voice search instead of a call directly.

You're welcome!
You can't install it in the first place because you can't update apps in system/app through the Marketplace. This is also probably why it doesn't show up in the Marketplace - Verizon doesn't sell any "google experience" phones so they disallow it on Verizon (this is just a theory).
The reason it didn't show up for you might be because whatever ROM you have installed (default HTC Incredible ROM?) doesn't have the Launcher built in.
It is working but there are some bugs, which can be the reason why Google retrieved it back from market; I get FC when trying to set a custom background from gallery and also as soon as tap on the "android settings" option in the app settings menu.

The android system is meant for apps to be opening automatically. Now if you are rooted there is an app that you can manually choose which apps you want to run or not. Inside the app it even let's you stop system app from opening also, but I don't recommend stoping those. You will see system apps in yellow and regular app in white. When you click on the app you want to disable it will tell you if you want to disable or enable. Since I did this my battery saves a little more and my phone runs smoother. If you have problems downloading app message me I can send apk.

I rooted my g2x earlier
And I have no roms because I don't know how to install them yet
But I want yup know what are the best apps for the g2x
So far I have
Titanium back up
Android booster
Bloat freezer (which I don't think it works)
Adfree
Busybox installer (which I don't know how to use)
Astro
mobile manager
Metamorph (which I really don't know how to use or get themes for it)
So if anyone has any input in what I have so far, knows how to use then correctly or has any apps that I need or works better then what I got, please help me

Titanium freezes apps so get rid of bloatfreeze. I like rootexplorer better than astro, addfree is also good for blocking adds in apps.
MEXICO U-17 WC CHAMPIONS!!
Root explorer is a fantastic app. I also use beautiful widgets and ring droid. As said before titanium backup is the best to freeze bloatware.

I installed Go Launcher and all the other Go products (most are free). It really brings the phone to life. I also Have lockscreen widget which helps simulate the cool lock-screen to camera/contacts/Music Player function the Sensation has.
Reboot widget. Much more simple than holding down power + volume down.
I use Droidwall. Simple firewall for your phone. Blocks data/wifi access to applications unless you explicitly allow it.
Any other good apps? and how fo I use metamorph? where do I get thee themes for it?

I'm going to have to second droidwall. Root call blocker is great, too.

SetCPU- CPU profile/steps changer
Cache Mate NG- cache cleaner
Root Tools- Build.prop.editor and Boot animation changer
AniMod- changes animation effects when changing menu's etc...Usually i keep all animation off so only the top task bar does the animation of flipping.
VMHeapTool- changes Heap size easily to 40 to give apps more breathing room
Spareparts- gives easy options to turn off certain settings
LG/2x Black- turns your LED buttons on and off when you recieve certain type of notifications.
SD Speed Increase- changes default SD of 46kbs to 2048-4024kbs to allow faster read and write speeds. Mileage varies depending on SD card.
+1 for adfree
+1 droidwall
+1 Go SMS
Freeze all bloatware ...only unistall non-essential programs like Tegrazone app if you don't use it.
DSPmanager -makes speaker soooooooo much louder been doing it for months no damage. Use the e q and turn em all the way up except for the first one, play with it while song is playing
APNsbackup- ur gonna need it for some roms if u like having data connection all the time.
Root Explorer and ROM Manager are MUST!
Root Explorer is one of the very best file manager and you can even backup/restore/transfer personal data on /data/data
ROM Manager is associated with clockworkmod recovery. It is another A MUST if you want to do nandroid backup and install custom ROM.
AnReboot can reset your phone if some persistent problem happens (like no signal)
Add LBE privacy guard to the list. It's handy. Use it with droidwall.

Titanium Backup free does not freeze apps.
Try Anttek App Manager. It does other stuff but I use it for freezing bloatware and it works perfectly.
I'm basically purging all the useless applications i'll never use from a fresh install of CyanogenMod 10.1 Jellybean 4.2.2 and I can't find the .apk anywhere in the app folder. Does anyone know what the .apk is called so I can remove this garbage please?
Thanks.

Don't worry about finding the APK. You can unistall it using Titanium Backup or System Tuner or any of 100 similar apps to unistall it. In those options it will appear in the App list as Movie Studio and not whatever goofy name the APK file has.
You can also freeze it in the Manager Apps section of the settings. That won't delete it but will disable it competely.
Cool thanks. So far all i've done is go into Settings -> Launcher -> Drawer -> Hidden Apps and basically ticked that, will that do for the time being? Also, is Titanium Backup free and can I get it of the Marketplace?
Thanks.

No hiding it only removes it from the app drawer. It may still be running in the background.
There is a free version of titanium on the play store...using it you can uninstall or disable any app.
Hope that helps

That is 100% wrong. I just personally confirmed it. Disabling an app in the settings menu formally freezes it and makes it completely unable to run in any capacity until it is unfrozen.
Please don't post something as a fact unless you are certain its a fact. Posting wrong information will confuse new users and others searching for help later.

So am I alright keeping the method I used to hide it? Will that stop it from running in the background etc.? or do I still need Titanium Backup to remove it?
Thanks.
Disabling the app will render the app unusable until you re-enable the app. If you need to use the app sometimes then I would try the app greenify from the play market. Greenify simply hibernates the app.

I had my Alcatel phone unlocked, and I rooted it using KingRoot. I recently installed "x app hider" it worked great till I downloaded the calculator to hide the app itself. Then everything went wrong the app would not open, so I installed it thinking it would unhide the aapps I had hidden, I was so wrong and considering all my root apps where hidden well now the froze and I can't unfreeze them and some I can't even find.... Help
