Finally flashed - Captivate General

I've been lurking these threads for a couple of months. Got tired of waiting for AT&T. So I took the plunge and flashed Firefly 2.2. I'm really liking the experience so far.
I did have one minor hiccup after flashing, but I figured it out. After flashing firefly I noticed that the Ext filesystem is not installed by default. So after installing I booted into clockwork and selected the options for converting to ext4. That seemed to go ok, but after I rebooted, I did not have su privileges anymore. I finally figured out that the clockwork recovery had an option to apply root privileges. Everything has been good after that.

I just flashed the same Rom. Seems to be working great. Battery life might be an issue.

Welcome to the wonderful world of custom roms!

I hope I can do that also, I'm afraid to flash roms due to some of what I read here in the forum, what r the causes of bricking?? >.< im in stock rom for 4months and 4months reading all the post here in xda >.<

Thank you to all the developers and other members who contributed here... With your help, I am running Froyo now

I actually ordered one of the USB jigs just in case I ran into problems. I didn't flash until it came in. Turns out I didn't need it, but at least I have one available in case something goes wrong with future flashes.

Bricking usually occurs when the flash is interrupted, like in the event that you pull the cable in the middle of the flash. I've actually never had a bad flash so far, and the vast majority of bad flashes can be recovered from by dropping into download mode (either with the three button combo or a physical jig).
You should check to see if your phone has the three button combo, since some of the builds have it disabled for whatever reason. You can find the build number under the battery, it's a 4 digit number like 1008.

You're the man! Thanks!

Well I'm not quite there yet, but I'm REAL close.
Still have a couple of lingering questions about the whole process.
I'm rooted, flashed CWM, and have backed-up my current stock ROM. I've done a general app/data bu with Titanium.
Haven't ever done any sideloading related changes (the sqllite/ADB setting change thing), and I'm not sure if that affects how thorough the titanium bu was, or whether the sideloading thing will need to be done post-flash for titanium to completely restore my stuff.
I still haven't done all the requisite reading on the whole flashing process, but will do so as I get closer.
Encouraging results from other first-timers in this thread are certainly pushing me in the right direction. ;-)

[q] screen of death on froyo :(

So this morning I was checking out the new choices in my Froyo leak - rooted Captivate, I clicked on every one of them to see what it is and then I clicked on one that said something like user accounts, well ever since then my phone has been a black screen only displaying the top clock and a no signal bar. What should I do next? Unfortunately Im stuck at work with no programs. So Im wondering what would you do, which Odin should I use? Ill be checkin in cause at least I can do this and plan fixing my phone for later
Im guessing you tried pulling the battery?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
sure did tried the reboot screen.
and the other thing, now the phone wont go into sleep mode so my battery is slowly dying too
try to boot into recovery and clear out the cache...
I did that too and it clears and then i reboot then it goes right back to black screen
The same thing happened to me, but I wasn't digging around in the settings. Like previously mentioned, I booted into recovery, and cleared cache/factory wipe, and it booted back fresh. Luckily, I had a Titanium Backup from a few hours before it happened, so I didn't really lose anything.
I had something like this too. Can you get into Download mode and use Odin to return to stock rom? It took me several tries before Odin worked.
Well I still haven't heard anyone who has completely bricked there samsung captivate yet so I think you'll be alright. Just to be the 1 click Odin when you get home.
I'm pretty new myself at this But I think the only way were really screwed Is if we kill the bootloader.

If you got your captivate within the last couple weeks be careful using odin with a froyo kernel. Check the Q&A thread for a post titled "phone-pc something" (Using my phone otherwise I'd provide a link)

[Q] stuck on splash screen, please help!

im new at this please bear with me.
i rooted my shift last week. everything was fine, im not ready to get too crazy into flashing stuff yet (since the risk for bricking is higher with android). i like to take my time read, study, test small things here and there.
today i was browsing the forums and came across the battery icon mod
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=892297
so i downloaded it, i had rom manager installed, and installed the battery icon manager.
i chose the icon i wanted rebooted, it looked ok, so i wanted to try the other icon and loaded that one, phone rebooted and got stuck on the sprint splash screen.
i can boot into the bootloader, not sure what steps i need to take next to restore my os.

once you're in bootloader, select recovery, then backup restore. Then restore. Then restore your backup that we're all sure you made before you made those mods right? RIIIIIGHT?????
You have to get to boot loader to get to recovery to wipe and flash your rom... (hold vol down and press power) in case you didn't know..you should being that its rooted..I dunno

Boot in to CWM Recovery go to backup/restore /advanced restore, select restore /system only. Once that is complete clear the cache, reboot. you can then delete your dalvik cache (note: clearing the dalvik cache doesn't work via CWM currently). That's it.
If you didn't make a back up, just re flash the rom. If you were still stock, just flash preludedrew's or nfinitefx's base. You can even still keep your data. Just make sure from now on to back up before doing any mods.

Caught in a loop - Guidance Please.

Good morning -
I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I'm an existing user of the Galaxy Nexus and have been rooting / flashing it without any issue, but a little stumped on what went wrong with the captivate.
I picked up a brand new Captivate for my wife from Craigslist the other night for $60. I really nice phone...very nice screen.
I was successful in rooting it last night all though I did have to copy a recovery file into the system/bin. I believe that was because of a signature issue I was having and found some information on this site regarding the file.
Anyway, everything seem to have rooted fine and I copied CM9 to the proper location. Booted into ClockWorkMod and flashed the ROM.
However, it now boots to the AT&T screen, goes black, and then back to the AT&T screen. I can between ATT screens a script or something running.
I then used ODIN to get back to stock and appears it went through without any issues. However, it still gets in the same loop at the AT&T screen. I am still able to get into download mode. Perhaps I used the wrong ODIN.
Would someone have an idea of the next step? Do I need to get into some type of boot screen to do another master reset / format?
Thanks.
The first time when you were seeing the AT&T screen, a script screen, then rebooting, what was happening was that the phone needed to have the CM9 zip flashed again. The first time you flashed it, it essentially built the framework onto which the second flash would actually put CM9 in place.
As for where you are right now, you may want to flash back to a Gingerbread-based stock rom with bootloaders included (unless you're 100% certain it already has the Gingerbread bootloaders). There's a sticky in the development section that has all the stock roms.
Once you've flashed back to stock Gingerbread, try flashing the CM9 zip again. If it does the boot loop again, just hold Vol+/Vol-/Power until it reboots, and it should put you in ClockworkMod Recovery. At that point, just flash the CM9 zip again and you should be good to go.
One word of warning, as you're new to the Captivate. ICS-based roms, on some occasions, have a bug that can cripple the internal SD card of the Captivate. I'd suggest you look for the "Encryption Unsuccessful" thread in the Development section and read up a little bit so you are aware what that is.
Thank you for the assistance.
Is this where I should start for the ODIN?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18370912&postcount=3.
In particular, 'I897UCKK4 Odin One Click - Stock, CONTAINS Bootloaders, Re-partition, Full Wipe'
Thanks.
That looks correct to me. I'm assuming you'll need the bootloaders package, as you had mentioned you were dealing with the 3e signature error (which, if I recall correctly, is associated with stock Froyo roms).
Okay. Maybe next time I should just stick with a non-ICS ROM. Just need to find one in the development section.
Thanks a bunch! A great little phone and the screen is just outstanding.
Okay....back up and running using "In particular, 'I897UCKK4 Odin One Click - Stock, CONTAINS Bootloaders, Re-partition, Full Wipe" from the above link.
However, now I can't get the one click root to work.
There's an easier way. Go to the Corn Kernel, grab a CWM-based zip file and flash it from within CWM recovery. That will give you the Corn Kernel, which will (I believe) give you root access.
Double check, though, that you can get to CWM recovery by using the V+/V-/Power key combo. It should have about 9 options (instead of the 4 in standard recovery).
If you don't have CWM recovery from the flash you just did, you'll just need to grab another one-click that has CWM baked in. There's one that says "Without Bootloaders - Link to thread - by 4-2ndtwin [With CWM Injected Kernel from Boog]". That flashes KH3, no bootloaders, but with the CWM-friendly kernel.
Or...from the Stock KK4 just use this new Utility by Red_81 to get CWM Kernel and Root... [Utility] KK4 Easy Root

[Q] Does anyone know what's wrong with this screen?

I was trying to update my mom's Infuse to ICS, then all of a sudden this (attached) happened. Heimdall had just given me the libusb.dll error (I needed to update the bootloader cause I kept getting rainbows in CWM), so I was unplugging the phone so I could get the right drivers.
I have a horrible feeling I did something very wrong. I can't imagine why what I was doing would have caused this though, since the cmd had gone back to a default state after giving the error.
Is there any way to fix this?? Thanks a ton in advance!

can you get it into download mode...?
if so run the one click again and you might have to check the box for bootloaders, on the second run...meaning I would run it twice...
It does that immediately on power up. Doesn't even get to the Samsung screen. Odin will recognize the phone, but when I try to flash a return to stock package (which I used earlier perfectly fine), it says the md5 is invalid.
Like I said, I never even got to the point of installing the bootloader since I forgot about the drivers. Are you saying I should install the drivers and try to flash the bootloader again?
Thanks so much for the help! I've never had this much trouble with a phone before
EDIT: I'm a dumbass. since I couldn't see the screen, I forgot to press up again after entering download mode. Odin is now in the process of installing the aforementioned return to stock package. And I think it worked!
You have no idea how grateful I am of you for pointing that out! I feel kind of dumb for not trying it, but when the screen looked like that I could only assume there was no functionality!
THANKS AGAIN! Times a million!

What EXACTLY gave you the idea to put your mother's phone on a ROM that half works and has many bugs? Just trying to understand... I could have done this to my friend's mom's atrix, but I didn't because the stock ROM will always have the least bugs for unpopular devices like ours. First of all, every once in a while, she asks me if there are any updates yet.
Second, there's only a short list of insignificant bugs mentioned in the ICS topics.
I flashed GB on it a while back, and I figured since CWM and everything was set up already I wouldn't have a problem; flash, reboot, flash again, done. Unfortunately, it wasn't flashing the second time for whatever reason, and I figured it had something to do with the now half-functional CWM.
Anyway, to those of you who weren't unreasonably judging me, and rather decided to help: Thank you, the phone is now back up and running!

Wifi error after update

Hello.
I recently bougth a SGS4G, it came with the original 2.2.1, and every thing worked fine.
I started to read about de updating the rom and got interested, after reading, I made de update using the one-click metode. I used the Stock_KJ6_+_root-One-Click.jar, it all went just fine, the phone run smoth, but when I tried to turn on the wifi connection every single time it gives the error message.
Does any one have any ideia on how to solve this problem?
Try it again, you may have had a bad download.
What error message are you seeing?
Posted from my SGS4G, thanks to Team Acid development

I used the Stock_KJ6_+_root-One-Click.jar, it all went just fine, the phone run smoth, but when I tried to turn on the wifi connection every single time it gives the error message.
Does any one have any ideia on how to solve this problem?

Try it again, you may have had a bad download.

No its not a bad download. He used my oneclick and wifi is broken because blastoff uses the bcm4329 module.
HrCorreia use the kernel in this thread. Just flash it in cwm. Your wifi should be fixed after that. If not post back and Ill see what I can do to help.

When I try to turn on the wifi connection, it always shows the message saying "error" on the connection status.

Eollie - did you ever update the OneClick?
Just curious because just tonight I flashed your OC... or the top one in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1358498
Downloaded it fresh today. "Stock_KJ6_+_root-One-Click.jar (this has the blastoff v2.5 kernel)"
Anyway, the wifi wasn't working. I flashed AntonX's BwaT kernel to get it back.
Am I missing something?
Thanks!

Related: I would've loved to flash straight to Valhalla Black but even though I found a post where VB built an experimental One Click for that, I couldn't actually find a JAR anywhere. Am I missing something here too? Apparently FB isn't accepting PMs....
I'm not sure why you're looking for one-click installers for everything. The typical way to install is using a zip in recovery. You should be able to find a good selection of ROMs and kernels that you can flash from the recovery that it sounds like you already have installed.
The one-click installers are generally when you have things so hozed up you need to get back to a relatively clean, know state. They generally aren't for getting a fully functional phone. Your WiFi problem is likely the driver that matches your kernel not being installed.
FB is around from time to time.
In general, I wouldn't hold your breath on anyone updating software from a couple years ago. Older projects eventually get archived or deleted as each ROM build you are working on can take 50 GB or more.

Phone was super hosed. Would not restore a Nandroid backup.
A VB one-click would have been fastest.
Would gladly try a newer ROM but my wife and I use wifi-calling every day - until and unless somebody with a newer ROM figures that out, we're on GB.

Gingerbread is cool, especially if you need the proprietary WiFi calling feature. Several of us have poked at those bits and they aren't very happy with anything but the ROM they were built for.
You'll typically have problems if you flash a kernel through download mode "over" an existing ROM. Download mode is partition-at-a-time so it can't, for example, update kernel modules on that are on the same partition as the rest of the ROM.
Lots to pick from once you have custom recovery going.

Back to the original question though - did Eollie or anyone update the kernel in the Rooted/stock one-click so that Wifi works? Maybe it was just a fluke that it didn't work for me?
(I'm asking for the next guy...)

And done. The second post has been updated with the new oneclick.
This fixes wifi and removes the csc update. Enjoy!
(note, after rebooting it does go to recovery, so you can flash after oneclicking)

I see. Maybe he just made it boot to recovery instead so you still have to reflash the kernel.
