Hi,
I already searched the forums, but couldn't find a clear answer. If you would be so kind, just answer the questions with yes/no
A custom recovery is just more capable than the normal recovery?
A custom recovery image is neccessary for a nandroid backup?
Does the custom recovery image overwrites the normal recovery?
Does the original recovery gets restored, if I restore a nandroid backup, which was made at the very first start of the phone (for warranty purpose)?
Is it possible to flash a kernel without a custom recovery or do I need it anyway?
Finally this is what I'm planning to to:
I'll receive my Nexus s today and want to change the carrier-info and install a custom kernel. Therefore I'd like to proceed as follows:
Create a nandroid backup with the original recovery for warranty purpose
Install a custom recovery image (clockworkmod recovery?)
Change carrier-info according to the how-to
Update to stock 2.3.4
Root the phone
Install netarchy kernel
Lock bootloader
Are the steps fine or did I miss something. I would be very delighted if one of you guys could help me!
Thanks in advance!
Long story short you'll need the custom recovery to do anything you see on xda.
Thanks, but that still leaves me 2 questions:
Does the custom recovery overwrite the original recovery?
Is the original recovery restored when I install the original stock rom / nandroid backup?

You have two options:
Code:
fastboot boot recovery.img
In case you just want to make a nandroid backup and preserve stock recovery, no flashing process through this command, phone simple boots into a custom recovery.
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Flash any custom recovery and replace stock or wherever recovery was installed before. Very useful if you want to install different kind of ROMs or kernels.
Restoring a backup or flashing a stock ROM will bring back stock recovery. Just make sure this script is present in your phone: /etc/install-recovery.sh It will do the job for you after reboot.
I would like to root my sensation, but before, I want to backup my stock rom, so, in case of problems, I can go back.
But, if I have understood well, in order to perform a Nandroid backup (with ROM Manager, right?), I need to root my phone: it's completely absurd!
If I root my phone, which backup can I do? The stock Rom will gone away and the guarantee too!
Do I miss something?
Another question: I read about some problems with Rom Manager, which are the other methods to do a nandroid backup?
Thanks and sorry for the noob question, but I am a noob and this is my first android phone.
bye!
you will still have stock roms after you have rooted so this is what you have to make a backup from.
Have no issue with rom manager- dont know where u heard that from.
Dont know of any other method other than nandroid to backup rom etc
u can use titanium backup / my backup for apps etc

Well, if i have understood correctly, I root my phone following the step 3 here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300), then with ROM Manager I make a Nandroid backup and finally, if I want, I can install another ROM, am I right?
If u wanna go back 2 stock that's what the ruu's are for

Here's a guide created by alphadog32 to go back to your specified ROM and s-off or s-on. 10 people said it worked for them.

do a backup before you root
so sequence is (after CWM step is complete)
backup
root
backup (not 100% necessary but saves u having to reroot if u restore a pre root backup)
install custom rom (not necessary - u can stick with stock)
the guide u linked to is great - follow it step by step and u wont go wrong
and enjoy ur unrestricted device
That 'guide' tells you to root but you should only root if you want Stock ROM + Root
If you want a custom ROM (which automatically have root) then you don't need to root your Stock ROM
So you'd want to do this
-Revolutionary- S-OFF > Custom Recovery (but flash it through HBOOT) > Nandroid Backup
Then you have a backup of your stock ROM, unrooted.
You can now manually root your stock ROM if you like.
That 'guide' should really state that root is NOT obligatory if you don't want to stick with your stock ROM.
I've flashed lots and lots of ROMs and played about with my phone so much, but not once have I ever manually rooted.
And don't bother with ROM Manager, just flash the fixed recovery provided in that 'guide' through HBOOT and you should be fine.
All the recovery options, including Nandroid Backup/Restore can be accessed by loading up the bootloader and choosing 'recovery'. No need to do anything through ROM Manager
I want to confirm; we do need to make nandroid for every custom kernal, right? Cause if I remember correctly, if something goes wrong, you cant restore a nandroid that was made from a different kernal than you presently have installed. Correct or incorrect??

Never read about this anywhere, but I installed InsertCoin hours ago, and got kernel 2.6.35.14
When I restored a nandoird backup, I got again 2.6.25.10.
Maybe those numbers didn't change? I don't really remember, I hardly remember what I ate 10 mins ago xD
Good luck

So, maybe what Im remembering is, you can't restore a 2.3.3 backup, if you have rom with 2.3.4 installed, for example.
Shouldn't you be able to access nandroid recovery on a stock out of the box sensation by turning off fastboot and holding volume down and power when turning it on?
I tried on a friends stock sensation but it gave me an error and couldn't find a recovery image....
Hi out there! First should say im new on Android, and want to learn at least to a medium level user (flashing diferents ROMS, testing them, setting my phone how i like to, etc). Im now learning the basic vocabulary, looking and reserching about my android model and software. And the question is the next one:
I want to root my phone(SGS2/GT-I9100) by this method because i read the whole 44 pages of the thread and sounds safe, easy and all the people talks great about it (except one user that brick his phone ).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719
And i have read too that the first thing you should do after rooting is an nandroid backup, so you can get to this point in a future if something doesn´t work rigth.
Usually the nandroid backups are made with CWM or Titanium backup. I would like to use CWM, and my question is:
When I follow below rooting guide, the CWM isn´t permanent no? it just used to flash de SU-Busybox. So should i download and install it to make the "holy" nandroid backup?? I found this other thread where is explained how to make this nandroid backup, with RM and then using CWM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1592104
So after rooting, i should follow those steps no?( i mean, getting RM) Because my doubt is that the first CWM (the one i use for rooting) is the same i can use for de nandroid backup?? or this one its just to flash the SU intaller and i need to download and install it (CWM)? So i can follow both guides without any problem? im not doing the same thing 2 times no?
Thanks, and sorry for my english, it´s a little rusty... Im a noob and hate my self (xD), but want to learn
Edited: Wrong tittle before, now is right
1. 1st rooting isn't cause your phone damage
2. nandroid backup is usefull, if u wanna flash u'r phone to custom rom, if custom rom that u'r use isn't stable u can back to u'r rom earlier using back up rom from nandroid backup
3. nandroid backup is fitur over the CWM (permanent use)
i'm only use CWM for backup, Titanium Backup is used to backup u'r app+data only. to backup with CWM just enter CWM mode & then choose backup rom, then CWM will build folder backup to u'r sdcard, if anything happen with u'r rom just enter CWM mode & then restore the backup that've u made. it's simple
I wonder why nobody create a stock root tmobile rom for our 1S. The only option i can find is a nandroid stock root 1.84 but it's only for CWM( there is a lot problem to do restore with that nandroid ) , not for TWRP?
It will take you about a minute to flash cwm. Use it to flash the nandroid after which you can go back to twrp recovery.
Make a nandroid with twrp.

yeah, i know that method. i just curious why we don't have a stock root rom in our phone section? I used to have dell streak/vibrant/captivate/mytouch 4g/sensation/samsung s3(now)..all of them have stock root rom. It's just more convenient.
Help -- CWM backup, Flashing Rom & Restore backup.
Hi, i recently flashed CWM v5.5.0.4 on huawein ascend y511. Only can't enter recovery with keys/button combination but with adb and some other app. I made backup with CWM from advance option.
I didn't unlocked bootloader but Flashed "CWM" successfully created backup with it.
Now the question is:
-- What in case i install/flash custom Rom, is it safe?
-- in case yes, will i be able to restore back to stock by restoring backup took with CWM.
&
-- How i can restore/flash stock recovery, is it possible with same method as flashing custom recovery?
Thats all.... Thanks.
