APPS2SD For Beginners

Hello everyone. I am branching over to XDA from Androidforums in need of more guidance.
First, let me say I HAVE searched for instruction to my post, I HAVE NOT been successful with any of my reading. I just closed three separate windows of firefox with a total of near 75 tabs, all related to apps2sd, but none giving the specific instruction I need.
If in reading this you can think of another thread that has my answer, PLEASE post it for me. -much appreciated
If not, please read and help if possible. (I am listing my set up in case it is user specific)

My goal is to initialize and complete the process of setting up apps2sd system today.
I would like to sucessfully have this running and I cannot find any specific guide on "how to". I have however found MANY that speak about it after the fact.
So, please someone tell me what I need to do to set this up. I want apps off device and to have a "swap space (???)" set up.
Can I do this now (after having flashed custom rom) or do I need to start all over, beginning with apps2sd process first and then flashing Rom.
Detailed instructions much appreciated, or a link to appropriate thread.

You just need to partition your SD card as ext2+FAT+swap and reboot. That's all.
This will erase your SD card, so be sure you copy everything off first.

Please edit the title of this thread and take out the [ROM] prefix. This is not a ROM and the title is misleading.

EDIT: Does FreshROM 1.0 have apps2sd? I thought it only supported it if you had it on there previously.
EDIT: Never mind, I just saw this in the FreshROM apps2sd rant post - "Now with all of THAT said -- this rom officially has and supports Apps2SD. "

Okay, but with a bit more detail... I am rebooting into recovery mode and then doing this? Can you explain with just a tad more detail? thanks!

I swear I'm not a cop! I just made the same mistake once.
I tried looking for apps2sd info a while back and ran into your same dilemma. I ended up using Modaco's ROM (actually, I used the UNOFFICIAL updated modaco made by obelisk79) because it already had it on there.

Right in the recovery options there's one that says something like "Format SD card: Ext2+FAT+swap" or something like that. Choose that, then reboot.
I thought Fresh 1.0 had AppsToSD built-in. If it doesn't, this won't actually accomplish anything.

Okay, I found it. Thanks for the help. Is this the same as "swapping" b/c I heard a lot of negative press about swapping only working well for a day.

Well, I would back up your card first. Just copy everything over to your computer, format your card, reboot your phone and then copy everything back to your SD.

Yeah I found somewhere that it would obviously erase the card data. I am really trying to figure out if the apps2sd is the same as "swap" since I keep finding bad things about swapping.
Are you using apps2sd?

It does.

No, it's not the same as using swap. It works fine, don't worry about it.
AppsToSD works best with a Class 6 card, since the class 6 cards are faster.

Yes, I'm using it. I have read flipzmode's rant about why he doesn't like Apps2SD. I have had no problems with it.
When I ran it with the modaco/obelisk79 ROM it seemed to keep the phone relatively speedy, even with a ton of apps installed. I am using FreshROM 1.0 now and I ended up uninstalling a few apps because of lag.
EDIT: I am not inferring that FreshROM is any slower. I think the problem is on my end! BTW, I am using a 16G class 6 card.

Unfortunately I think mine is not a class 6, it's just an 8gig standard micro sd. (PNY brand).
Anyway, so i went in recov. mode and formatted to the ext/fat/swap partition. I reloaded my card with previous data. Is that all I need to do? is there no setting I need to monitor or adjust?
and also, will my current apps get pushed to the sd or is there a process I should follow to move them to the sd?

I just did this and it pushed my apps from what I can tell. My internal storage number went from around 90mb used to 52mb. Now my real question is if I wanted to undo this.. what kind of options/headache am I looking at ?

I think reformat is the only way back. Anyone else confirm this?

Current apps should get pushed to the SD. To make sure it's working, pull up an adb shell and do:
cd /data/app
pwd
You should see "/system/sd/app" spit back at you.

Well yeah you would certainly have to reformat. But in addition to that you would need to re-install your apps, since they would have been removed from the card.
I was reading somewhere that you can change a setting to zero which causes the hero to pull the apps back to internal storage, leaving you not needing to re-install. cAn't remember where setting is or where i found it...

yeah I can't remember how to do all the adb shell junk, oh well.

Cyanogen -> Super D w/o wipe and MicroSD upgrade

Hey guys,
Seeing how cyanogenmod and Super D kinda use the same guts to an extent, I flashed Super D 1.10.* over Cyanogenmod 4.1.15.1 without a wipe and it's running fine. Is this something I'm going to regret later and should wipe and reflash, or is it a non issue?
Also I'm looking to upgrade to a larger (posibly faster) microSD card. What is the best way of doing this without losing any data/apps? Would it be nand+ext backup from recovery, then partition new microSD same way, and drag over nand+ext file and restore? Or is it going to be a two step process, of partitioning and reflashing new microSD, and using a third party app like mybackup to restore apps?

If it's not broken now, it's probably fine. If you run into problems though, do the wipe.
As for the SD, I use a Linux boot CD (Ubuntu Installer CD) to partition and copy the SD contents. I just used 2 SD readers and copied directly between the cards. It worked very well for me and the phone didn't know the difference. Doing a nand+ext, partitioning the new card, then restoring would likely work for apps and such, but /sdcard (the FAT32 partition) won't be restored. You can use just about anything to copy that partition though.

thanks man. gonna go get new microSD today. I hear sandisk is best quality for accuracy in class claims. any other suggestions? people always tell me microSD's over ebay from generic manufacturers in china rarely match their advertised class ranking. Any one agree that notion?

Holy crap.. it worked! Thanks for posting that you tried it w/success. I just flashed Super D's 1.10.3 w/out any issue.
Now to mess around with Super D for the 1st time

Well part of developing is finding out different ways to do things, so he found a compatibility. Good enough?

Flashin cyan over superD isnt suprising since its basically a themed rom to flash over the rooted defanged roms

The best way for me is to turn off the phone, put new SD in and if your have RA-amon's recovery you can partition with that, and then toggle USB. Plug your old SD into your computer with SD-reader or the like, I use a USB-reader. Then you copy old SD to new. Remember once you partition your card it becomes the life of your phone, your apps are stored in your partition. So' everthing that was on the old card needs to copied to the new one or your going to have problems. Nandroid backs up your rom state, not your SD. As for SD's I would go with kingston, I've tried quite a few and kingston's have never let me down. Trust me I've been with this root thing from the beginning, when we rooted through Telnet and partition from console in recovery and ADB. I've root over 20 phones. I just rooted my moms Samsung Moment. Follow instuctions and you don't have problems. I would'nt make a habit of flashing without a wipe, I wipe data, dalvik and ext, just to be safe. Use Backup for root users, and then you can restore on your new rom, so you don't have to go through installing all your apps.

[Q] Can anyone help? SD card (internal)

So I updated to the leaked Samsung 2.2 Froyo. I am trying to move apps to the sd card and I am getting an error. "Failed to move application. Not enough memory".
I have seen demos/reviews with this function working. I am also making sure I try it with apps that are compatible with the feature.
Anyone have a clue as to whats going on here.
Other than that, I love being a new Android user, ported over from the apple world. Captivate made my 3g look foolish.

When installing a program it will pop up, this is Apps2SD, do you want to move. Or you can see it in manage applications, select application > Move to SD is highlighted
You have to be careful with it because that silly media scanner will run and disable you sd functions. Example. You have a program that starts up when your phone starts you will get a FC because the media scanner is running.

I'm getting the same message, but it was working before.
I flashed a ROM and enabled lag fix. However, when I went back to stock, I forgot to disable the lag fix.
I'm back to the leaked 2.2, but I still can't move apps to the SD card. There is plenty of memory free.
Is there any way around this?

Have you tried doing a master reset to remove the the lag fix or gotten the app from the market app2sd?

I tried a master clear using Odin, but I haven't tried a master reset. How is that done?

If you did a master clear with odin then it is pretty much the same thing

Ok I know a dumb question but do you have enough rom on your SD card? Try the apps2sd app from the market

No worries, I know you have to ask.
My SD card has 12.83GB free.
I did try using the apps2sd, but I get the same message, that there isn't enough memory.

I would say that there is an issue with the leaked rom. I would try a custom rom and see if it happens, if it is still an issue I would copy the stuff off your card and reformat it to see if that is an issue

I actually got the message the first time I tried a custom ROM. When I went back to 2.2 the problem went away, but I hadn't tried the lag fix.
When I tried another customer ROM today, I got the message again, but this time a tried the lag fix.
I forgot to disable it when I went back to stock, then to 2.2.
I did reformat the internal SD card, didn't help. That's why I turned to the forums. I'm all out of ideas.

OMG I am stupid lol. The apps to SD is for moving the APPS to an EXTERNAL sd card not the internal sd

I don't want to waste my time, but would it be worth a try to:
1. Flash back to stock.
2. Install Clockwork recovery
3. Install customer ROM again.
4. Enable lag fix.
5. Disable lag fix.
6. Flash back to stock.
7. Master clear
8. Install 2.2 again?

Only if you have enough room on your external sd (micro sd plugged into the phone)

I don't currently have one installed.
It must be a file system issue. Is there anyway to rebuild the stock file system? Or is that supposed to happen when I flash back to stock?

No prob, but here is the deal. This only works for external SD card in 2.2 2.1 didnt have this option at all. So unless you insert an external SD card it is not gonna work.

OK, now I'm the stupid one. I didn't even think of putting my SD card back in! I always take it out when I flash back to stock because the media scanner takes so long.
Anyway, I put it back in, now I can move to SD.
So, my next question is, where does it put it on that SD card? I looked, and I don't see anything other than my music.

To tell the truth I dont remember really, I have not needed to move anything to my external sd in a long time, what are you using to look at your SD card?

Root explorer. It's not really that important, it's mostly just curiosity.

Hey guys hoping you can help me out here.
Let me just start by stating that I'm not really a tech savvy guy.
Okay, so here's my story. I found an old SD card with a bunch of stuff on it and decided to plug it into my phone. I was on CWR, and decided to format the SD card, I figured that would remove all of its content. Again, I stress I'm not tech savvy, however I figured its just and SD card and I could always resort to get another one if this one broke.
Anyway, if your still reading, I guess CWR didn't register the new SD card and instead reformatted my internal memory. (If that's the correct term).
Do I have any chance of getting the files back so it could at least boot?

Download your rom of choice put it on your sd card and and reflash through cwm unless you have titanium backup on your other sd you will probably have to redownload your stuff

You likely wiped the data/did a factory reset. Grab a ROM, toss it on your sd card and flash it, it won't get your apps back, you'll have to reinstall them.
If you want to use the stock ROM go here. Otherwise, pick a custom ROM and run with it.

[Q] S3 Locked in Boot Following CRT Down zip

This is one heck of a way to introduce myself. I am embarrassed and frantic about what has happened. I've been using the guidance in these forums for years, never had any problems, but I usually made a backup. Because of the size of the S3 backups, I didn't have one this time.
I have a Verizon S3 on stock ROM, rooted, CWM Touch Recovery installed, bootloader locked. I flashed the CRT Down - ODEX.zip (attached) from the thread below. Everything seemed to go well, but on reboot the phone gets stuck in the boot animation. I have also contacted Scott over Scott's ROMS since this was where the file came from, but have not heard back. My first preference is to undo the changes to the modded files. Second choice is to flash the latest stock ROM (Stock Root - VRALHE - ODEX.zip) that I have downloaded, BUT I cannot get it on the phone since the phone won't boot, and for some reason CWM does not see any files on the external SD card. My last choice is to do a wipe/restore from stock, and I think I know how to do this, but it will be very painful.
Anyone in a helping mood? I don't know where to go from here. This is just terrible.

CWM won't read your SD card because it's not formatted to the correct file system. You could take your card and backup the data, format it to Fat32 then transfer the ROM over to your phone that way. I've long since lost the link to the simple format tool that I used to format my card but if you search for it you should find it in I think the General Forum...

SD card already FAT32, formatted by PC and then reformatted in phone. Thanks anyway.

If you reformated in phone you formatted it back to extFAT.

You are absolutely correct sir. Your assessment was dead on. Thank you very much. I can now make a backup to the external card. Unfortunately, I had to restore the phone (-#*@"*). I found that two other 64GB cards I was having problems with had the same issue. Wow! Twenty five years around computers and I just figured out how to format volumes larger than 32GB in FAT32. Thanks again. This thread is done.
