Is it possible to force the software keyboard to stay on when I slide the hardware keyboard out?

It is stated in the general Android SDK documents somewhere that a long press on the menu button should activate the keyboard. Not only when you're editing text but also when you are for example in your app drawer (which comes in very handy, because typing a letter will bring you straight to all the apps starting with that letter)
Unfortunately, I've seen this behavior only on the Desire HD. Doesn't work on other devices I've tried. Maybe it does work on the NC though.

So I was wondering if anyone has been able to load the Android Keyboard (AOSP?) on their phone running GB. I like this keyboard for a number of reasons, but mainly the fact that it auto-corrects some words automatically that the multi-touch keyboard does not for some reason.
For example:
- If I type im, it auto corrects it to I'm.
- If I type wer, it auto corrects it to we're.
- If I type il, it auto corrects it to I'll.
I know most of you think this might be a bit silly, but I got used to this keyboard and typing this way before GB, and believe it or not these little shortcuts allow you to type/text a lot faster on the phone.
Last night I flashed my phone from CM4DX back to Official GB, and I tried flashing the keyboard being used with CM7 (Android Keyboard) but it won't work on GB. Not only does it not work, but I have now lost the Multi Touch keyboard and I can't seem to get it back unless I do a factory reset. I'm currently using Swiftkey X, but I still don't like it as much as the original Android Keyboard.
If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.

This is the Gingerbread keyboard in an apk. You can install it along side your current system keyboard.

So, I recently switched to the Revolution HD ROM, which is really awesome, but I'm having a weird issue with the Swype keyboard. It doesn't seem to work as often as it did under TMOUS stock: by that I mean it'll work for example when text messaging, but not for instance when doing an internet search, or entering passwords (I use the XKCD method of password choosing, using up to six common words for master passwords, rather than random hard-to-remember random individual keys; it's faster to enter, and just as secure so long as the password is long enough).
Frankly, even the TMOUS stock keyboard isn't enough; I'd much rather have the Swype feature to be always on, and only have to mess around with slow thumb-typing if I'm entering a name or unusual word. Is there any way to make Swype work everywhere, and not just on a limited subset of text boxes?
If you want the swype function always enabled, the best thing to do is ditch the HTC keyboard and get the official Swype keyboard.
Well I tried signing up for the Swype beta, but even after downloading and installing the keyboard I'm still left with the dysfunctional Sense one. Even after a reboot it's still not replacing the keyboard correctly.
something is not right here. i have swype and it worked on revolution as well as insertcoin's roms. list what steps you took to enable swype.
Well, I signed up for the Swype beta program. They sent me an email with the installer; I downloaded it and installed it. The installer gave me a new option in Settings->Language and Keyboard->Swype to enable the Swype keyboard, which I did (they gave you the big warning about Swype being able to potentially see your keystrokes/etc that you have to click through).
Then I tried it out. I hit the search button from the home screen--no Swype, just the same Sense keyboard. Went into text messaging, same thing. Even after a reboot, unchecking-checking the box, all the same.
Running Revolution HD 3.6.1
swype works fine for me as well.. I think you got something buggy up there. What I would do is basically use titanium backup and uninstall swype and get rid of it completely. Then use installer and get it back!
Not sure if this would work.. it'd clean it up a bit though!

Oh for F-ing, F- F.... balls. Yeah, that's right, I forgot to change input method. Boy, do I feel stupid.
Okay, thanks!
wierd issue... i've flashed almost all the roms here( using ARHD 4.x.x) and never had such a problem! it should walk you through all the options to have it on before you even close the swype installer app.....
Yeah, for some reason it didn't the first time, but it did when I re-installed. Weird, huh?
I did some testing. The trace works fine on Tmob based roms even with text input predictions disabled. But AR HD, you must have predictions enabled for it to work. That's why I don't like it on AR HD. So Im forced to use Go Keyboard.
can anyone let me know if there is a way to add the stock htc keyboard and phone on this rom?
The keyb that came with the rom is extremely difficult to type with, and the phone app, in order to dial a number i have to go to phone, then contacts, then search ...
while on the stock phone app you just only type the first letters of the name of the person and dial...
thks
Smart keyboard and smart keyboard Pro are very comparable to the HTC keyboard. I however, recommend using Swype. As for the search I use the Google Search / search button on my phone to search for contacts. Then when selected it brings up their contact card and can call / SMS from there.
Do a search for HTC ime keyboard I haven't tried it on CM7 but I know it works on other non sense roms.

He means it will not work. Confusing grammar
One dialer is similar to the htc one in that it has predictive dialing or whatever it's called... It's lighter than the other alternatives i've tried too. As for keyboard, i keep coming back to swift keyboard x. Highly customizable and better layout than htc. I can't type more quickly on this than on anything else.
Cheers

Do a search for HTC_IMEI Mod Keyboard in the Market. It is a version of the HTC keyboard from one of the Verizon HTC Droid phones. I've used it on both CM7 and Sense ROMs. Swype is a good one that seems similar to the HTC keyboard also.
I keep going back to Go keyboard. It's free and has some great features (arrows for navigation, keypad, etc).
Is it just my phone or does everyone elses stock keyboard suck. I literally just reset my phone and typing in the google user info on the phone setup was the most painful thing i have ever done in my life. Then when i go and load the JB stock keyboard, the phone freaks out and their is constantly a notification in my status bar asking what input method I want to use. I CLEARLY PICK THE JB KEYBOARD, LEAVE ME ALONE!
Sorry, it just fills me with anger that someone would give the go ahead to release this to the public.
I don't too many people who use stock keyboard, there's a million better options.
Yea the Samsung keyboard lags ridiculously, I use the android 4.2 keyboard. works great, and can fly txting with the swiping actions.
I use PERFECT KEYBOARD. Free in the Play Store. Works flawlessly and looks professional. Of course you'll have to go into settings>language & input>change the default keyboard to Perfect Keyboard.
The lag comes from their predictive text. Go into the settings and and turn it off and you will see ZERO LAG. Or... download another keyboard such as swiftkey (which is AWESOME!!)

Mike is right. SwiftKey is a awesome keyboard. Zero lag and the prediction is great. Probably the best keyboard out there. I paid for the app awhile back and it was well worth it. I used it on my Rezound cause of the keyboard lag and now on my s3. You'll love it.

Yes go with Android as Andy says or as I prefer Swiftkey. The keys are big enough for me to hit. There is new straight beta and Flow beta. Sign up for VIP and they email you all beta APK's.
Thanks for the advice everyone. I ended up loading AOSP 4.2.1 so its not an issue anymore. I had loaded the JB 4.2 keyboard several times and would pick it in the settings menu, but the Touchwiz roms didnt like when i didnt use their keyboard so it would constantly ask if i wanted to use a different keyboard
Hello Friends:
After using the Galaxy S3 for 6 months or so I decided I couldn't stand not having a keyboard anymore and picked up a Relay from Amazon. It came with Jelly Bean preloaded out of the Box. I've already rooted it thanks to the fine people on this forum and though it's noticeably slower than my S3, I smile every time I get to use a keyboard again. (battery life seems pretty amazing too and I'm getting almost as much life as the genuine extended battery 3000mAh I bought for the S3)
However I'm having an issue with the keyboard. For most apps, like XDA, Messaging, Google Search Bar, etc.. the keyboard works fine. However if I am on the Internet, say for example the google home page and use the search bar on the actual page, I have to hold the alt key in to access the secondary characters instead of just pressing it once like you do normally. This becomes annoying when I want to us the @ symbol and have to hold the alt in on the left side and cross my right hand all the way to the left side of the keyboard to get that symbol. I also noticed this in the Netflix app so far.
After some searching, it appears that some Relay users experienced this problem post Jelly Bean update but my phone came with Jelly Bean preloaded so I don't have an ICS backup to go to.
Does anyone have a work around? (I can't use CM-10, if that is a solution because I depend on wifi calling all day at work)
Does anyone have the Stock ICS ROM? If that's a solution, I'll take it.
I also considered perhaps remapping the voice search key on the right side to have a second Alt key on that side of the keyboard, but I'd like to do that as a last resort.
Thanks in advance for any help or guidance.
EDIT: Sorry I didn't realize I put this in General instead of Q&A. Please feel free to move to the correct section.
RE: Alt key issue
Don't worry, CM10 is not the solution. Stock browser does same thing in it.
Check here for possible stock ROM, or I have restored my phone to ICS using Kies, not sure if that always works for newer versions of phone or not though.
What might be simpler though is use a different browser. I do not have the problem in Firefox on CM10. The ".com" alt shortcut still doesn't work, but I don't mind that much. Maybe Chrome/Opera/etc would also work?

I actually tried Chrome before to see if it would be a work around and it was not. You were right about using Firefox though, that did solve the problem! Thank you so much! Oddly enough though, the .com button does work in Firefox for me in a quick test on the Google home page.
