[Q] Does custom rom solve reboot issue? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As I did Google search, I found that nexus s have auto reboot issue, but seems happen to some phones only. I want to know if I flash a custom Rom, do it still auto reboot?
Custom kernel/rom will solve the problem?
Since I thinking should I get one nexus s. Thanks for advice.

its a SW problem and they already know what it is and its being fixed so dont worry

That's weird... I never experienced the reboot issue on my 2.3.2 stock but rooted.

Neither of you specify whether your random reboots are during calls. Sometimes custom ROMs run into issues and this causes a random reboot however the OTA that Google has spoken of will only fix random reboots during a phone call. I've never seen it on either mine or my wife's Nexus S and given that CM7 is built off of a completely different set of code, I highly doubt the same software issue exists.

i never once got a reboot durring a call,
every random reboot i have gotten was when the phone was sitting on my desk not being touched, and i saw the boot animation out of the corner of my eye

Then your reboots will not be affected by the OTA and are a result of most likely a momentary logic error in the code of the ROM which causes it to reboot.

Hi,
Try switching kernels.
New 0.2.6 is HERE
thanks for the answer but I'm running faux's AOSP kernel for CM7. Also the reboots didn't start after flashing a new kernel, I've been running 0.2.5b2 since Nov 20 (updated to 0.2.5b3 today - still reboots) but the reboots started sometime during the weekend.
ok I think Viber is the culprit. So no ideas on how I can find out if it really is Viber?
I have the same problem. I tried the stock rom, S-on... and I still have this problem...

Try to look with ES file explorer through your phone storage for /proc/last.kmsg. It should hold clues as to your last unexpected reboot.

There's no such file.
I couldn't view it in ES, I use Root Explorer.
It's in the system folder>proc> then open last.ksmg as a text file.

Did you install any apps after you restored to stock ROM? Was wifi enabled or were you on 3G at the time? What ROM, radio, and RIL do you use (before restoring stock ROM)?

I also used Root Explorer but there is no last.kmsg file. I've also searched for last.kmsg with Root Explorer.

Hey
I've actually had the same issue! So I think it started with the OTA HTC update that went through sometime last week. Since then I've noticed my phone just randomly restarts by itself all the time (like 3-5x in a day). Ive also noticed that the phone is getting very laggy especially while using certain apps like facebook or Messages and then sometimes I think it just restarts out of low memory resources. never had this problem before the OTA update! Glad to know that I'm not the only one.
Now if we can just figure out how to go back to the good 'ol days....

I've been running CM 7 since mid September though. So in my case it's some other cause.
I'm thinking it has something to do with networks. Because the majority of the crashes occur when I'm away from home/not stationary. I haven't been able to catch a crash with logcat since it almost never crashes (2 in total) while I'm at my computer. So now whenever I'm at the computer it is connected via USB and logcat is running.
Also the crashes very rarely (once or twice maybe) occur while I'm using the phone. Most of the time it crashes or has already crashed when I press the power button to wake the phone.
yeah. not sure.. id agree with everything youre saying about my crashes as well. Except i am running stock, no root. So, we'll see.

It may not be there unless there was an unexpected system crash/reboot. I have had my phone "hang" for some time until I gave it the three finger salute, but it didn't actually crash as such.

CM9 Alpha 6 - Random Issues

Since I flashed over to CM9 A6, I've noticed a few random issues and would like to know if anyone else has seen this happen on their phones.
First, when updating my apps, I've had my phone quick reboot (or possibly a crash?) in the middle of the update process. This has only happened twice so far and once it "rebooted", the update continued and I did not experience any adverse effects after.
Second, this morning when I checked my phone, I received a notification that I had 24 new emails. When I checked it, I found that these were all old emails that I had already read but were still in my inbox. Basically, it was as if I had just configured email on my phone for the first time.
I'm not exactly sure how to post log files and I'll be sure to do my research to find out but am just curious to see if anyone else has seen this happen with theirs since flashing. I did a clean wipe and install, S-ON, flashed the boot.img, etc. The phone is working as it should minus these few glitches that I've seen since flashing.

im s-on unlocked running alpha 6. im having none of the problems youve stated, maybe try wiping and re-flashing. the olny thing im experiencing is some battery drain
I only get a reboot when I turn on wifi or a wifi tether app, and that's so rare I can't get a logcat on it.

I had this happen the other day. The phone seemed to lockup for a moment, came back, then I flipped the WiFi toggle and black screen then splash screen. I don't know if I could reproduce it if I had to.

It only happens once in a few days for me. As I said, this makes it tricky to get a logcat.

I've been keeping an eye on the developer thread about the battery drain and have noticed it myself. The issues I'm having aren't that big of a deal, I just thought I'd throw the question out there to see if anyone else has seen it happen with their phone. If they have, it could be worth reporting but if no one else has seen it, I'm not going to worry about it. Like I mentioned, everything is working as it should and I can deal with the random crash/reboot until the next alpha release.
Thanks to those who replied.

[Q] Freezes / Goes to Lock Screen / Status Bar is Wiped Clean / No Service

So as the title states my phone has been doing this lately and i am unsure why. This will happen when my phone is just setting there and i am not playing with it. It will also happen when i am in the middle of something which is frustrating. I want to say this happens 3-5 times a day that i know of.
Phone Info...
Verizon
Rooted with stock ROM
I deleted some bloatware apps that was said to be safe
I also deleted some files so i do not get OTA updates anymore hmmm...
I cant remember when this started happening but i am assuming i brought it upon myself lol
Freezes / Goes to Lock Screen / Status Bar is Wiped Clean / Has No Service / Then back to normal in about 20 seconds???
If anyone is experiencing the same thing i would love to hear a fix or even an explanation of what it is?
Let me know if there is any other information i can give to make this easier to answer.
Thanks!
Yeah, it's a spontaneous hot reboot. Happens to me once in a rare while too but I've yet to figure out a pattern behind it.

Awesome!... well not awesome but i am glad you share my pain. May I ask... Are you rooted?
Yes. Running CleanRom 2.5. But I haven't noticed a correlation of the hot reboot issue to any ROM. Had it happen to me in Beans and also even rooted stock. Didn't have unrooted stock long enough to know if it happens there.
I was only stock for like a week or so and i don't remember it happening then but according to this forum i found people say it has happened while completely stock unrooted...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1788211
I have deleted some apps i guess ill just wait and see, no one seems to know what causes this...

I have 2 strange problems need input.

First problem is random reboot when taking pictures with a flash. By randomly I mean it doesnt always happen but sometimes it does and when it happens it keeps on happening until I give it a break. It only happens with flash. I am running matrix kernel but I have confirmed this has happened with a friend of mine who is running completely stock. I have also experienced this with third party camera app.
Another problem is random "refresh" of the screen like basically its an animation where whatever is on the screen "goes back" and "comes back" again. Its like a split second thing and there is no other delay like I keep using the phone the way it is.
I am running 4.1.2 on i9023 with matrix kernel. I am sure that the refresh problem wasnt there in 4.1.1 but I am not sure if it immediately started happening after 4.1.2. And I am also not really sure about the camera thing as I dont use it that often. I do remember it happened before but cant be sure what version it was.
Anybody else have such problems?

Regarding the random "refresh" of the screen, I believe everyone has that. That's just normal for the phone. Nothing really you can do about it, not that I've seen any.
About the flash making the phone reboot, Have you tried clearing all the cache and dalvik cache? Also if that doesn't solve it, have you also tried flashing a new ROM? That specific ROM or kernal may be the problem. I know that Matrix kernals tend to have a slight problem with the camera. I speak from experience cause my Nexus S used to force close the camera app with Matrix kernal.
Let me know if this solve's anything.
Regards,
Bomboholic
Thanks a lot mate good to know that the refresh thing is normal as it doesn't really bother me but just wanted to confirm if it's normal.
The friend of mine is not running matrix but ill try to experiment with things to figure this out. In the meantime if anyone is facing this camera reboot issue then please chime in.

Freezing - Not sure if random

So since about 2 days ago the phone just start freezing. Sometimes it just restarted randomly, but mainly freezing at least every 5 minutes. The power button alone wouldn't turn it off no matter how long I held it. Always have to use Pwr+Vol Down to reboot.
I put up with it because I've been busy, but finally tried wiping cache - no profit. Tried safe mode - no profit. Factory reset- negative profit. After the reset it just seems to restart a bit more often but in general it freezes less, making the timing seem even more random.
This happened when I first got it (used). It was restarting due to the fresh 7.0 update. So a factory reset fixed it and it was smooth sailing for like 3 months or something. I know there was a minor system update a few days ago but those dont usually call for a factory reset. I tried it anyway and it just didnt work. I had actually even tried uninstalling all the app updates from the night before it started happening. but safe mode couldn't even fix the problem so I guess that was moot.

Mainly I'd like to know if Im alone. A fix would be great but I'm hoping it's not specific to my device. If it's a hardware issue I'm gonna give it a swift toss down the stairs and maybe deliver a nasty curb stomp to it right afterward.
Any advice?
I'm running into the same exact issue. Same build, and am running out of ideas.

Good to know its not just me. Did it start after a recent update for you also? That would give me hope that its not faulty hardware. Maybe just a bad update.

Yes, it started right after I got a small update. I'm hoping a fix will come. (I'm on verizon).

Same for Verizon. I guess I'll just hold out, using a backup phone, until a new update hopefully fixes it.

Gonna go ahead and revive this. It seems to work fine when the sim card is out. I recommend you see if it's the same with you. I've charged it up before work multiple times before work days and come home from to see that it never restarted. I was able to test this using the fingerprint feature; it isn't asking me to use pattern like it does after boot.
No one else is chiming in but, since we're both on Verizon, I'm having a feeling that it's directly related to the SIM/carrier.
