I've been doing a metric ton of reading before I flash my first rom. I was all set to flash P10.1 when I read a few posts by DG that led me to believe that Cog3 might be right around the corner.
Now I've read a further few posts by DG that state that Cognition is dead, because (his reasoning) Cog was always a pure-Captivate rom, & the latest rom he's working on isn't purely Captivate-based. Another few of his posts & accompanying posts by other users in those threads have led me to believe that whatever he's got cooking will be based on the "official" Rogers FroYo release. Maybe it's mostly based from that stock rom but has other add-ons from the i9000 line (i.e. to make it not pure-Captivate)?
After all my reading, I think that flashing a Captivate-based rom would be the way to go, if only for the fact that it would include the ability to utilize the sound processor (afaik, there aren't i9000-based roms that can do this, correct?).
Anyway, I'm sitting here twiddling my thumbs since Monday waiting to see what DG's got in the oven & figured I'd start a thread to see what you all thought. This will be my first flash, & I don't plan to do a ton of switching around, so I want to get it "right" the first time.
tl;dr What's next from DG??
Just know that once you flash a rom, it wont be your last. DG roms are very good, along with Phoenix & Serendipity(my favorite).
I've flashed a handful of DG roms & I personally always find myself flashing back to one of Mikeys roms, he really knows his stuff.

This is what we all said before we popped the cherry!LOL
Well last I thought DesignGears was working on the Gingerbread ROM for Galaxy S Phone ported from the Nexus S. And Supercurio was working with the Cyanogen Team on the project as well so maybe they're all in kahootz now. They haven't posted an update on it in awhile so maybe it's coming along good.
But it would be nice to get ahold of that Rogers Froyo, at a good stable point. At least then we'd have everything built for our Captivates specifically.

Right, & I believe that this is what's happening now. The Rogers Froyo that was just officially released via Kies is what I think DG's working with.
Am I totally off-base w/the Captivate/i9000/sound processor bit?
& yeah, I know what you all mean about constantly switching around, but I really only flashed a handful of times w/my old HTC. Guess I'm lazy
I started off as a noob, and basically still am. My first flash was cog 2.8 I believe. Now its something different every other day. You can't stop yourself one you've started.
Its an addiction for sure. Best of luck flashing once and that's it. I hope that works better for you than it did for me.
I'm so addicted that I got my wife a captivate also so I can try things on hers to see the differences from what I'm running.

I'm digging the work being done on the armani rom.
From a phone
As the poster above stated, many devs are working on an Armani JL1 rom right now. I am unsure what DG is doing/planning though. Just putting it out there.
Just like t-readyroc I've been holding off on my first flash. I don't think I can wait for official froyo any longer. I just keep thinking that once I flash a newer, more stable, rom will be released. So I don't know if I should wait or just take the plunge.
I'm still reading around on the most stable release. Any one have recommendations on a rom that is stable and easy to install.

My choices before hearing that DG's latest release is imminent were Phoenix 3.0 & Perception 10.1. Now I'm also reading that Phoenix 3.5 is imminent. Bah!
Great, thanks t-readyroc for making my decision even harder. Lol

I flashed my first rom the other day (Serendipity 2.0) from stock, and the difference has been NIGHT & DAY! It blows my mind that Samsung can put out somthing THAT crappy compared to what their device is capable of.
Then yesterday I flashed a new modem and kernel. I'm hooked.
What's the benefits of a new modem and kernel?

For what its worth I think it would be great to have Supercurio's audio tweaks integrated into the FireBird Kernel. Truly an enhancement.

See, for me, it's going to be the constant app/music/data restores every time that'll prevent me from being a flash-whore...
Anyway, to get back OT, one of the reasons I was really interested in P10.1 was the fact that the launcher works in landscape mode. Are there others that do the same?
& again back OT: Captivate/i9000 roms & the use (or lack thereof) of the Captivate's hardware audio processor - are there any kernels that work with i9000 roms that make use of it? Or are all i9000 roms stuck doing the processing in software?

purchase titanium backup pro
it takes about 20 minutes from start to finish to flash a new rom for the complete process.
I said the same thing, "gonna find my fav rom and stick with it" That was a few years and phones ago and still flashing like crazy lol
But see, flashing whole new roms for the most part is almost a waste of time. Because usually why do you flash a new rom?
From the looks of a lot of ROM threads, going from release to release all the changes a lot of times are the installed system apps, and the themes to go with them. Yes, occasionaly there is a bigger release that warrants a new kernel or something of that nature.
To me, as an end user, ROM's could all use the same base rom (which they don't) and most people wouldn't know the difference. So find a ROM that doesn't force close on you, and flash the themes and apps you want into your ROM.
Personally I went from Flashing every ROM out there, and then just sticking to one that works, is deodexed so I can do whatever I want to it, and won't cause me to throw my phone in the trash.
With the new entries into the at&t android scene, will the captivate be left behind by the devs? A couple have already picked up new devices, is there cause for concern?
There will be others who step in, and given that you can run vibrant and i9000 roms there will be new stuff going on. The i9000 forum is really where the action is anyway. If hardcore and supercurio move on then I would say you have seen the end of what can be done with the sgs.
Porting vibrant roms, simple kernel/modem swap? Can it be done before and after flash?
Hope not.
@mccord
Yep, I usually boot the rom then flash the kernel and modem. Sometimes it wont work simply swapping them first.
It already has been abandoned. Jump ship while you still can.

My point in the thread is this, were will development be in a month, what are our options. I9000 and vibrant ports are solid options. I don't think many understand how easy it is to do on their own
It will carry on no matter what. Browse around. Heck there is still stuff going on with devices that are 5 years old and older. So no it will not ever "end"

The new entries that is rolling out now, IMO, doesn't have the "wow" factor for anyone to upgrade and renew for another 2 years or even 1, yes opinion. I just returned my Inspire cause of it.
The Atrix, we will see. Accessories, accessories, accessories...reach deep in the pocket for it. Not worth it, ....we are just talking about a phone.
Samsung Infuse...oh yea... Neveragain.
I predict 3rd quarter, then "man overboard"
Development for these phone are easy for these devs, as long as leaked firmwares keep on popping up, and they have been. We all should be safe for awhile.
Sorry for the rambling...morning java...strong.
But yea, what newter55 said
I don't know if this indicative of how many people actually OWN a captivate, let alone DEVING...but I often find that next to Android development section of the captivate the number of viewing is usually around 300. There's still lots of captivaters, and I don't think everyone is in a position/able to jump ship.
I don't see why people are so worried, I'm looking into getting a Captivate myself. I know it's no Inspire 4G etc etc. But it's still a relatively new device. I know when I started in the WM6 days, people were still making WM5 roms etc for old devices. You will see people still working on them.

Interesting. Funny that you mention Quality control, my brothers brand new Captivate's screen went out under a month of getting it. It's like the screen decided not to turn on one day.
I've wondered this myself. I feel like if development will continue after the next 6 months its going to be on cyanogen... but hey. I'm relatively new to android so take what i say with several grains of salt

I feel that the amount of work the devs are putting into this phone are making it a great device. I switched to an LG Quantum recently (and love it) But thanks to the joys of owning a sim card, I switch to my captivate at least twice a week. Go to the LG Quantum forum, and you'll see why. There isn't much to do. Not much hacking, no OC's, no UC's, just questions like "What case looks prettiest on my phone?" =/
This even applies to the majority of Motorola android phones, especially MOTOBLUR devices. There just isn't that much to do with them. As for the Captivate, there will always be some random, somewhat useless feature we're all going to go gaga over. ("OMG I CAN TAKE PANORAMA SHOTS.... MUST SHARE WITH XDA...") It's just the spirit of the Captivate forum. We're all in the same poorly navigated, highly customizable boat.

Well the origianal droid is about as customizable as the galaxy s it has gingerbread already...and honestly up until recently most of the "custom" roms were just bloatware free versions of vibrant or i9000 versions of TW. Andromeda and serendipity and supernova all are themed giving a feeling of something new and fresh....if we could get some aosp builds then this phone would really be great and we would see some true custom roms.....the devs are what's keeping the galaxy s alive.

Okay, just remember this is a total rumor, and complete speculation at this point.
This article says that it is "likely" that Samsung will be the first handset maker to provide 2.3 Gingerbread to the U.S. Cellular carriers.
http://androidandme.com/2011/03/pho...the-first-gingerbread-updates-to-us-carriers/
***This is complete speculation, has nothing to do with any of the updates of late, this could not even mean an update for our phone. I am simply posting a link so that everyone else can know. I expect no flame in the thread, it will most likely end in a Close Thread. Take this thread for what it is.***
Eh. 2.3 with the TW interface won't be so great anyways. I'll flash CM7 when it becomes easier to flash and more stable. But it would be nice to see Samsung and ATT pushing out Gingerbread earlier than everyone else.
EDIT: On second thought, I can almost see this purely because the first Gingerbread phone ever was Samsung.
Yeah it is very possible, but if it's true it could take a while

If you check the CM7 Q&A thread it says that its not likely that it will ever be a single zip install, so I don't think there's much hope for an easier install, although its fairly easy to begin with anyways. I'm running it right now and it seems bug free for the most part my only complaint is the camera app because its not as nice as the Samsung one but I can live with it.

Could be true.. Probably won't be OTA, but I wouldn't be surprised of the international galaxy s got a 2.3 update by the end of next month. They got 2.2 in what, September, October 2010?
I doubt we'll ever see an official 2.3 for the Captivate though.
Bleh, even if Samsung delivered 2.3 tomorrow it would still be eight to twelve months before AT&T could get it's act together and release the software for Captivate and that is if there is ANY plan to update Captivate. I won't hold my breath and really don't need their 2.3.
One thing nice, is that it could be a hint that the Internation Galaxy S is going to be getting an official release sometime soon, which in turn could translate into ports anyway that could contribute to even better custom ROM's. And i doubt it will come to the Captivate. Why when they are trying to sell a new device?

Just installed CM7 on my cappy Thursday took about 5 mins, just follow connexion2005's video linked in the CM7 thread and you'll have no issues. Just make sure you have the files downloaded and your phone flashed to stock before hand.
Well one can hope but to be honest we will get a ported version long before an official version, that is even if we do get one with the Captivate to be considered EOL by ATT as of the middle of next month. Will it be OTA? God I hope not lol
There already is a "official" release. CM7!

I suppose CM7 isn't HARD, but I just haven't been installing ROMs that long and I've never messed with actual Odin before, just one-click. I'm pretty happy on Precision right now anyways, so I can't see myself flashing CM7 anytime soon. I don't get how 2.3 is so much better than 2.2 anyways.

Feel of Gingerbread is better than any froyo rom..
Just with the 2-3 weeks I've been on CM7....its amazing! First its just plain fast, even in its developmental stage it's supremely fast. Secondly The small details, It has the glow effect when you get to the end of a scrollable list, which i think adds a nice touch. Lastly The CRT shutdown is really nice, I don't think I could go back after having it. All in all its really fun to use

Yes interest in the TB is slowing and therefore so is development.
Yes newer phones are coming out
Switching to verizon and their updates is a turd choice though unless they come out with something utterly amazing and 0 DEV's here adopt it. Will never happen though unless the entire community is dead.

Sorry man, but I read that OP and thought "What is this guy thinking?!?!?" Go back to stock and take whatever Verizon dishes out? I don't grasp the mental process that would conclude that as an option. I don't think interest is waning. I'll check that dipstick after Verizon sells it for free, or close to it, which is usually when sales get real good. Th3ory isn't exactly a benchmark of ROM development either. In fact, cranking out ROMs at a rate of any more than once every month is kinda unusual. BAMF went nearly 2 months without so much as a revision. Chingy usually goes at least a month. I don't understand what the deal is with Synergy and their goofy nightlies... how much can you tweak something before it's junk? I point to Ziggy's kernels as having exceeded that limit.
I came from the dInc. When I left that device as a primary device I stopped paying much attention to the ROMs for it. Now when I go and look around over there, there's heaps of devs I never heard of (a few with egos WAY too big for their sig), cranking out ROMs of all sorts. I know they hate to admit it over there, but the dInc is DEAD. If you want to see a device that seems dry on interest, visit the dInc2 forums, or some of the Motorola device forums. Or a LOT of forums, really. I don't know where you think devs are going since there isn't actually a better device worth upgrading to on Verizon. And don't say the Bionic; that thing was obsolete almost the day it launched, and the launch of the Inc HD WILL kill it. If you don't think a lot of the dev from that device will trickle down here, may I point you to all the stuff from the EVO 3D that's already made it's way here.
@ loonatik78...
yeah i guess after re-reading my OP it's kind of hard to take seriously. the TB is my first smart phone. never even knew there were forums like this that supported the phone, nor had i even a clue that these things could be rooted and modifed in such a way. certainly glad i googled my way XDA.
support has been wonderful here, and frankly find your posts well worth reading. thanks.

as for going back to stock - well not a chance.
Even if it's the end of the line for sense updates (as far as from verizon), there will be updates to AOSP ROMs like CM7 and OMFGB long after as many phones have.
Switch to a new ROM? For example, Synergy has many updates a week currently and shows no sign of a stopping point in the future. Not to mention the ROM is completly badass and runs smooth like buttah
When was the Tbolt released, Jan or Feb of this year ? Interest will wane around Spring '13... A lot more people keep their phones for the two years or so that VZW "rewards" than you think. It's been what, six months ? The HTC Eris forum is still going strong, just as an example!

First off GPS works fine, second yea, the NFL app is still wonky but I strongly believe there are better alternatives on the market.
Second I would say go to OMFGB, since our phone is in their tree, any updates they make go to our phone, so even when we are forgot about we will still recieve updates as long as their team is around.
Also, synergy is not a bad choice (Especially if you like daily updates), BAMF forever would be a good choice as well. It was just released and runs super smooth. Plus updates are coming every 2 or 3 days at most.
Also, (And hopefully, final) we should be getting a Sense 3.5 port soon, (Team BAMF is currently spearheading that operation).
So sorry to tell you but development is still going strong.

sorry, but I'm not the only one having problems with gps on aosp ROMs. It's not just getting a working signal before flashing. Even after doing that and maps finding me ok, most apps that need gps to find you, such as search, gasbuddy, etc, end up placing me at least 2 miles away unless wifi is on.
It's ok, really don't mind sense ROMs. I freeze, uninstall a lot of sense parts and use different launchers. Playing with shell 3d right now.

If only aosp roms had working nfl app and gps for me. Even with fixes, most apps that use gps either put me across the world, or just error out.
Guess if dev stalls, I might just have to learn to build roms myself.

Building has proved challenging but as far as taking a leak and debloat deoxed and add root busy box WiFi tether that is very easy. Even adding a custom kernel is very easy. Tweaking extra settings is where I am lost right now such as RAMdisk edits and other such tweaks need info.

built them on winmo, both tp2 and hd2. Just haven't had time to read up enough on android. But if it becomes a necessity, I will find the time.
I've been trying to download some new ROMS and Designgears page never comes up. just times out. am I missing something?

DG is no longer supporting the various ROMs he created for Captivate. From what I gather, he felt he'd gone as far as he could go to improve the basic Captivate OS, at least with Froyo. I'm not sure about Gingerbread, since I've never gone past using Cognition, being very happy with it.
However, if you indicate which ROMs you are interested in trying, someone should be able to upload a zipped version so you... or you can scan the Cognition threads themselves, or this Q and A. People have occasionally asked for and received versions of Cognition that were no longer directly available through the usual channels. Believe me, just because they're no longer supported, that doesn't mean they aren't still great ROMs.
ah. that explains a few things. I spent almost 2 hours searching forums and threads to find out. I had cognition before and am now trying some different ones. ok. now I know. thank you very much.
I believe Cog5 was DG's last call for the Captivate. He's moved on to brighter and better devices.
hmm, I had cog 3 for the longest time. if I can find 5 I'll give it a try.
Here is the Gingerbread Cognition 5 thread:

You aren't looking hard enough - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1127578
His Cog5 stays right on first/second page of Captivate Android Development forum.
Designgears moved on to the SGSII.
Last Froyo rom was 4.5.3, which was modified with all good things that can be done with source code.
Last GB rom was 5v2, which was based on a 2.3.3 Gingerbread Release.
Pinnacle from watsa, Version 1.2/3 was on KH3, a 2.3.4 GB release
Illuminance, Fasty, and others are based on KJ3, a 2.3.5 GB release, and the most recent Samsung leak.
Currently trying Illuminance.
I got some old sre versions

thanks for all the leads guys. and Illuminated one. I spent 2 hours going through hundreds and hundreds of messages in who knows how many threads. don't tell me I didn't try hard enough.
Have you pm'd DesignGears? He's still on xda, just a different forum (I think).
not yet. I not wedded to Cognition. just wanting to try out different ROMS and try to learn more about all this by doing. all kinds of different apps with different version depending on what your doing, different kernels. different ways of getting into download and recovery that sometimes work. it gets a bit confusing. a lot of this is written with people who know what they are looking at in mind.
not whining. just a bit frustrated.
I didnt know what I was looking at, when I first started modding my phone. I just kept staring at it and reading until it started to make sense. And if/when I buy another phone, I will have to start all over again.
you mean I have to buy another phone!!!! (silly grin). my wife gets this one when I upgrade. (angry birds addict) but at least I'll have some basics. I learn better by doing and using visual things like videos. search Youtube for videos about flashing Captivates! then you have to sort the good from the bad. I got lucky with MobileTechvideos.
Yeah, that's where I started. I think the s2 isn't that different, but I looked in the Inspire forum once and it's a completely different language.

thats the entire point of XDA. we all came here and LEARNED about all this stuff. its expected that other people that come here are here to learn. not make their phone cool
I would agree. Cool phone is just a perk
He moved on a couple months ago to work on SGSII ROMs. Last GB update was Cog 5v2 on KH3 (I think), but no dev took over his project. Apex/Pinnacle is also no longer being developed by Watsaa.
Fasty works for me as Logic updates it frequently. The prior FireFly dev is doing great work on Fusion (ATT) and Mosaic (i-9000). Tradeoff is that ATT GB ROMs are not open sourced, so the development is not as extensive as i-9000, but at least you get the audience chip support with ATT ROMs.
Cyanogen/MIUI are also excellent options.
I'm running GR_12 at the moment. cyanogen and continuum are already on my HD. I'll take a look at Mosaic. be nice to finaly be able to use the power button as a shutter button.
I'm ROMing my phone to get better use and efficiency. not to make it cool, I find all the themes and pretty prettys to be a poor use of the processing power and battery runtime.
Hi, I am around, on hiatus from everything atm
