BBC iPlayer app - 3G made to think it's WiFi? - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Dunno if any of you clever developer-types will find this tucked away in here but here goes anyway.
Via the Cydia store for iOS there's a handy little app called "3G Unrestrictor" that fools certain apps into believing they're connected over WiFi when they're actually only on 3G/HSDPA. Without going into too much detail about the morality and quality of video due to speed, is anyone able to say if it's possible to replicate this effect on the Android platform and if-so, would anyone care to take the ball on it? I'd pay a quid for such an app and I'm fairly sure I ain't alone.
Just hypothetical of course..... ;-)

That'll be a no then?!?!
Seriously? An open-source platform like Android?
Oh well.

TV Shows on Android

There is an app you can get off the market that lets you watch tv on your android, no matter which android you have. It doesn't use flash, but uses the default media player. You can download it at http://androidvideo.net/apps/AndroidVideo.apk
Just watched prince of Persia over data connection. Very nice.. are you the project leader?

One of my friends made the website and I made the app with Google App Inventor as a way to help promote the site.
My opinion of Google App Inventor is that you should also be able to go in and edit code, similar to what Adobe Dreamweaver does for web design.

Anyway to get better quality?

Sounds cool I will give it a shot
I Did some testing.
Comments:
The video quality is not great.
Some episodes are missing.
Links directed to unavailable page.
The website needs improvement.
I understand this is still in early stage and will improve as time passes. Other than that good job!

The way the website was put together was to ensure compatibility on every Android. That is the reason behind a very basic design to help ensure that it would work on the older Androids so that way nobody gets left out.
The reasons behind the quality is that a 3g signal is very unreliable for speed. Even when you have your bars full, that doesn't mean your data signal will be at its fastest. That is determined on how many people are using data on any given cell tower. The more people who are using it, the slower it will go. There is also interference that will slow down your speeds. By keeping the videos file size small, it helps decrease the number of problems with the stream.
The reason for only a sample of each seasons instead of every episode is to save on server space to help give out the greatest amount of variety of shows until the site is more established. Once it gets to that point, there will be a second premium service that will allow you to watch every episode, while the free service will be limited.
When we got our Androids, we looked pretty hard for a site that we could watch some tv on. We started with the Droid Eris so we became frustrated about how nothing was being developed for the older devices so my friend took matters into his own hands and makes sure that everyone who has supported Android from the beginning will be able to watch videos.

Wifi power save mode

I was wondering if like laptops and the psp (maybe otherdevices as well) if thereis a way to reduce power when using wifi activley, for instance im right next to my router and dont need full power to pick it up from far away.

I have never heard of a way to do that. My guess though is that at some level android already does this. At least I hope google was smart enough to realize a feature like this would be very useful to mobile devices. However it is possible that our "mobile" hardware isnt capable of doing something like that. But I would sure like to know if it can and how.
I wasnt sure if thehardware is capable or not, in my view I would think you would have to have this idea in mind before hand and make the hardware capable of it. It makes sense for psp ( close ad hoc gaming), and laptops are meant to be versitile, but i could understand if this is not thought for with tablets, while some people use them as laptop replacement, the idea of a tablet is more free and moving around and such)

WifiKills. good? bad? safe?

Check out this thread:

Any1 tried this app? It require root access. Any confirmation if it's safe to use?
Yes I used it once.....worked good .... tried that on gfs pad and got it disconnected.....
Didn't try anything else

Illegal if it's not your wifi. People on that thread think this app is some kind of game, going to public places and disconnecting everyone. I find that as another low in our society. But proceed if you wish..

It's obvious that there's a huge security loophole, but then again getting kicked off is just a minor problem. The bigger problem is when someone intercept the data you send over wifi. If it works i think it's a nice too to have if you want to take control of your own wifi.

Yeah, i agree. I believe that the developer for that app is working on getting it to 'hack' and block off encrypted and secured wifi, maybe even intercept the wifi and retrieve data from the user(s). If so, that thread should be deleted immediately as that is a much greater security risk. I have a bad feeling about the future of that app.
But what can i do.

Me personally I like the app! But the one I love the most its Faceniff I think he did a damn good job on hacking people Facebook if they using it with wifi.I have seen so many things that I din't though my neighbors was people like that ..but thanks to his apps I know my surrounding! And about the wifi app,it a good app I like it when family comes to stay the night and they been using the wifi signal alot and I hated when i be watching movies on my phone it keeps stopping .so I just turn the app and kick them out of my network .... except me lolz
!!! I hope he keep doing a great job!
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
If he manage to do that i hope it gets widely known so people know so people can find a way to plug the security hole. The worst security anyone have is false sense of safety.
There are enterprise level solutions that protect against this, but as far as the average user goes, it's a little above and beyond what a layperson could set up. The problem with WifiKill is there is no simple solution due to the way ARP packets work. The whole structure of networking would have to change to eliminate the flaw and really, you just can't expect that to happen.
What I don't see being a problem is it becoming too widespread in use. I've used it and about the 3rd time I shut down a whole network of devices it lost its thrill. It's kinda one of those "Hey that's kinda spiffy" tools, but unless you're a greedy whore it's just not really something you're gonna bother with.
FaceNiff on the other hand is a nasty bugger. But there is a REAL easy solution to it. Use SSL. I believe the FB app uses it and if you are using a browser just type in https://www.facebook.com. One letter more typing. The internet is a scary place, you need to protect yourself and when it's this dead simple, I don't feel sorry for people.
Wireless has always been a horribly weak system from day one. Just some articles on how easy it is to break WEP and you'll see you've never really been all that safe in the first place.

Gamestring Adrenalin Gamecast to android.

I have started playing around with Gamestring a couple of days ago. I spent a number of hours re-installing Bioshock and Gears of War to see what would happen...nothing. Gamestring will probably need a games compatibility list more so than. "If the game renders in Direct X" is not enough.

I was hoping someone else in this forum had played with the application and had a better experience than I did. Or maybe someone has a few tips for game compatibility. The Gamestring forum are very new and has very little info for the user to troubleshoot issues with app, connection or setup. I thought this would be a good place to ask. "Has anyone been able to stream a game from gamestring to Xperia play."
Start by explaining what Gamestring Adrenalin is?

Sorry. Adrenlin Gamestring is an application that allows you to use a host computer to run a game ex: WoW(World of Warcraft) then capture the game and broadcast it to your device. Similar to OnLive but using your PC as the host and your own games to broadcast. There is an open beta at:
http://adrenalin.gamestring.com
I have had little success with the app. It seems that games have to render in DirectX 9 no higher. Still testing.

so it's like using Splashtop? You stream your monitor to your phone? What are plus/downside to this?
How far have you come?

The advantages are, this app was designed to stream games rather than being a remote desktop app (like splashtop) so it "should" offer much higher framerates.

Similar to Splashtop, but purposefully built for gaming. I assumed, based on the graphics used on the site that they are aiming at the Xperia play crowd. I have tried both Gears of War and Bioshock, but neither has worked. The service doesn't seem to "hook" the game properly even in DX9 mode. The mouse does seem to move the mouse on the host but no audio or video.
The plus. The possibly of playing emulators like dolphin or or other games that I already own for free on my phone.
The down. (Besides the fact I can't get it to work! LOL) The service requires WIFI no 3g and no analog support yet.
Oh cool.. but i totaly lose interest when you say Wifi-only. Why? I rather sit by my xbox or my computer if i wanna play those games. Why play it on a small screen when you can play it on your TV or computer screen?
And i guess that it doesn't work with another wifi-connection then your own, because you stream your game.. am i right?
So yeah.. cool thing.. but so not usefull IMO
Wifi only sometimes isnt bad, say for instance your in a bg and suddenly you have the urge to have a crap. Load this app and go poop. Its good enough to keep you from getting flagged as away in game. Basicly this app replaces the piss bucket for mmo junkies
I have heard that the WIFI is a deal breaker for a number of people. I kinda feel the same way. Since I am not a big WoW player, I thought it would be a good way to play the rated M games that I don't wanna play in front of the kiddies.
And even IF it should work via 3g, it would fry up your phone bill like crazy anyway so haha ^^

Yeah, I would imagine what the bill would be for those who don't have unlimited data.

Nexus 5 ratted me out to T-Mobile for tethering my nexus 7.

I'm using easy tether app with VPN and Bluetooth connection. Kind of slow, makes it seem like working at work is a better idea. Help, any better way to fix that's less clunky

I use IbVPN but with another phone. So far it works. I assume any VPN solution would work.
Boy, that is probably the most misleading topic ever.
Anyway, the Nexus 5 has nothing to do with being caught tethering as your carrier can tell you're doing it by the user agent of the browser (the most typical method of detecting tethering) and other ways as well.
As for a workaround, there are several available but there's no guarantee on any of them that you won't get busted even so.
It's a chance you take - the carrier tells you it's against the service agreement and you choose to do it anyway; if you get popped and lose your service, the blame lies solely with you alone.
The user agent in this case is android using dolphin browser. Should appear Amy different than my phone.
I'm not whining, BTW, I'm aware of risk and consequence and adult about it. I'm also cheap, so after having used several nexus phones in the past the exact same way and never getting popped sure makes it look like the 5 is the problem doing the reporting about tether use.

This is bad news. I have always been able to tether any tablet through my Nexus device on Tmobile and browse with the stock browser and Netflix app. I have a feeling, Google is playing dirty and sending T-mobile/provider some kind of notice that tethering is now 'on'. I wish they'd develop an app like they did for Google Glass that proxying packets for ANY tethered device. Stick it to the carrier. Especially, Verizon.
