PITA USB - Captivate General

i am sorry if this has been brought up already...(the search on xda app sucks)
Does anyone else have a hard time plugging in the micro usb.
Not that its a huge deal, but i always struggle to get this thing plugged in at night. (While lying in bed w/lights off)
It just doesnt seem to slide in as easy as a miniusb does.

It IS a little harder to insert than a mini-USB. Make sure that the USB door is FULLY open because there is a slight detent to get past.

Your's has a door
Mine is just open...

Are you using a Samsung charger or a generic microUSB charger? I found it easier to use the Samsung charger, partly because it has an asymmetric plug which makes it easier to plug right-side-up.
But yeah, miniUSB is easier.

Had always thought it was stupid to leave it open like that... lol

Faulty N1 Dock?

I just got a nexus one dock delivered this morning... but nothing happens when I put my phone in.
I had the desire rom so I flashed cynogen and tried and still nothing.
I am guessing its faulty but there isn't anyway for me to actually be sure is there?
I guess I will just have to contact HTC support and get it replaced!

When your drop it into the dock, does it show charging? You could just have a set of dirty contacts - a quick swipe with a pencil eraser is an easy way to make sure they're clean.
Are you running a N1 ROM now (Stock, Cyan, Enmother, MCR)? If so, dock it and head to settings and there should be a "dock" option there now once you've docked.
Thanks for telling me to try that.
I can't figure out what the problem is. I did get it to work by pushing the USB wire into the dock and plug connector.
That makes me think that the USB wire is damaged but it seems to not require any pressure to work fine on my HD2 (as its the same connector) so I am a bit stumped by this!

Are you using the wall charger or USB charger? If it's the USB charger give it a shot with the wall charger. They say don't use the USB charger and the only reason I can think of is that the USB charger only provides .5A and that may not be enough to power the dock and charge at an acceptable voltage.
I am using the wall charger now but I am UK based so I am not using the suplied charger - rather my HD2 wall adapator and USB cable although that shouldn't effect how it works clearly.
I do wonder if the invisible shield may be causing part of the problem.
It doesn't "slide" into the dock I have to push it even though the bottom part of the phone has no protector (as I removed the shield from there) it does seem to be super temperamental to the EXACT angle and position I have it in the dock...

As long as it's pushing 1V I don't see why there'd be any problem if it's not the "supplied" charger.
Can you tell if the phone is making good contact on the bottom? You should be able to see the pins actually depress and "disappear" as the phone pushes them down into the dock.
which dock have you got
I'd have thought the problem would be the skin blocking the three contacts ( is it a genuine dock?
Jamie
with the invisible skin I need to push the phone in a little as well. The skin makes the phone not fit as well so that may be your issue, not the dock.

I removed the protector totally and it still requires pushing into the dock and then it seems to randomly disconnect the charging for no reason after a couple of seconds.
It must be that the dock is faulty (of course it could be my phone but I can't test that out so I will assume it is the dock).
I e-mailed HTC who said if I phone them they will sort out a replacement.
They seem quite efficient so far although I haven't phoned them yet!
I have to be honest I am not impressed with the dock... sure it looks nice and the bluetooth streaming is cool but even if mine worked perfectly and charged the phone - the phone slips out if I touch it anywhere - it must be the most unsafe dock ever. Forget using the phone in the dock. It won't stay in it if you press it....

Defective micro usb connection interface

I just had to exchange my phone because it was not always charging when it was plugged in. I thought perhaps it just wasn't connected properly, but I would plug it in and any pressure I put on the cord would cause it to loose the 'plugged-in' icon. Now of course I'm paranoid that the new one (which seems better so far) will break in a similar fashion. Has anyone else had a similar issue? It looks like some folks on the Vibrant forum are reporting a similar problem.
This might be a silly question, but did you have the door slid ALL the way open? I know I read about a few people didnt "click" it all the way open and the cord would barely fit in there and loose connection easily. The door slides open and feels like it stops, but it will "click" over to lock it open all the way.

Yes. I read those threads too, and I'm sure it was a hardware defect.
I had the same problem. Exchanged it. No problems anymore

I have the same problem. My door is absolutely slid all the way open but my micro USB slot is loose. I don't know how this happened since I use a backup battery charger to charge the a spare battery and then I swap out batteries so I never even plug up the charger. I use a bluetooth stereo headset so it wasn't the wired headset bouncing around that loosened it up. The only time I use the USB cable is to tether and all of a sudden last week I started loosing the connection with the laptop on my lap. If I have everything sitting on a desk untouched it is fine but as soon as you touch the phone or move the laptop much the connection is lost. I have to set the phone down in a way that puts it at a certain angle so that a connection is made.
I don't mind swapping out my phone but DANG, I paid 15 bucks for my screen protector and I got it on there perfectly!
I called att. They sent out another cable. Turns out it was the cable and not the micro USB on the phone.
Interesting...I never tried a different cable.

My phone also have this issue.. But it's charger related.. Sometimes the Traveler Adapter simply disconnects from the wall outlet.. So i'm using the iPhone adapter instead..

[Q] “Loose" usb port?

Just wondering if anyone else's usb cable is a little bit "shaky" after being plugged in? I guess it's normal since i don't have any poor contact issue so far, but ...it's kinda annoying..
Sorry if you didn't notice it before but you do now
ye my last android did that too. after using the micro usb port a few times it gets "shaky"-er haha

My Epic 4G Touch is the same exact way. However, I never had this issue with my Evo. Wonder if its an issue with the ports on Samsung phones.
I have found taking a pair of pliers and adding some slight pressure to the end of the usb cable has helped tighten things up. Make sure you are squeezing the entire connector and not using needle nose.

Its funny that you mention that because the looseness seems to be more dependent on the actual USB cable than the port itself (at least on this phone) Luckily, I haven't had any real connection problems with my phone. However, after replacing the cable, it seems to fit more snugly. Either way, its a little odd that it the same cable will seem more loose in this phone, but fit just fine in my previous one (still have it as a spare).
I've been having this problem lately also. Thinking in was a bug in the rom or a bad cable, the problem persists and its getting worse to the point it constantly will connect and disconnect repeatedly. I'm thinking its the phone because I've changed cables, usb ports and it still does it. But sometimes it will stick normally. Wierd...
If you have even tried brand new cables (since your existing ones may be worn out), then I would say that the port on the phone is likely damaged. Looks like it may be time for a service center repair.
My SR is the same way. The mini usb cocksoff to the right. I've experienced the same with a few Motos. I've came to the conclusion it is the cables themselves. I have noticed that the two teeth on the male plug get kind of wore out or not even pop back out and furthermore eventually damage the female port to where the phone will cycle from power to no power. I've especially seen this with OEM cables. I also saw a thread here where the guy gives an awesome, detailed breakdown of a screen replacement. The site he links has the replacement chip with the mini usb port if you feel froggy...

Anyone's USB port seem "loose" compared to Nexus 4?

Hoping it's normal and not just mine, because I plug/unplug mine more than the average person.
Directly comparing to my year old Nexus 4 -- there's a lot more side-to-side play in the USB port. It doesn't feel as solidly plugged in...
Anyone with both devices notice the same? Nexus 4, the plug doesn't wiggle at all, but in the Nexus 5 it wiggles in any directly.
Not a major issue.
USB Port difficult to plug
I am having the opposite problem. I have noticed it takes a fair amount of pressure to plug the usb into the nexus 5 port
and likewise with unplugging. I am concern the extra force will affect the port or usb cord over time. I left a message with Google helpdesk so will see if this is just my phone or a defect in port or plug.

yah, too tight for me too. :/
Once the USB is plugged in mine has a fair amount of Wiggle/ feels loose.
Think I'm going to return my phone as I also have the power button issue.
I found its to tight when you plug the micro port to your phone straight, but if you put the left side (or right side) first then slide the opposite side, it plugs in much much more easily.

If you had a Gnex you wouldn't be complaining about it being too tight. The USB port on the Gnex was a huge issue.

Mine was extremely tight. Then one charge later became loose side to side and up and down.
Is it the connector inside? I wonder if it moved out of position and I can move it back.
bringing an old thread back.
My USB port is also "loose" that it actually stops charging if I move it. Super annoying because it's a replacement phone I got last week. My old one didn't do this. Tried multiple USB cables.

I would but I just got this one as a replacement. but I found my wife s4 white cable stays snugged with little play. I'll use that one now.. lol. But if its gets worse, I still got warranty time.
Try a different usb cable. It's not the usb "port" that gets loose overtime, it's actually the male end of the usb cable that gets loose. If you look at the connector at the end of the cable, you'll see 2 hooks on the top of it, overtime they become looser, that is your problem.
When I first got the n5 and tried it with the oem cable they included, it was a very tight fit. However, when I went to try another cable it felt much easier to plug in.

I RMA's mine for this very reason. The cable simply would not stay in. The replacement phone had no such problem.

i'd try with other cables, tried with my brother's htc usb cable yesterday, it charged normally, but this problem arises randomly, so might have to test for few more days.. :highfive:
Clean out the usb port, blow some compressed air in there or carefully use a toothpick. Even a small amount of dust or debris can cause the cable to feel loose. Then once it's fixed, throw away all wall chargers and use a wireless pad

Loose USB charging port

I just noticed that my charging port is extremely loose and any USB cable I stick in there has a lot of wiggle room. Because of this if I move my phone while charging it sometimes looses it's connection. I don't believe it ever did that before. Does anybody else notice a loose fit or is it just my phone?

My charging port is pretty solid. But just to avoid this scenario, I got the samsung wireless fast charger pad
Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk
Couple of things, if you have a case, try charging without it on. Otherwise try another cable. I thought mine was loose too but it ended up just being a cable that didn't fit well.
Thanks for the feedback guys. My case doesn't come into contact with the charging port or the cable when it's inserted. I use the original cable and a cheap chinese one intermittently. The Chinese one is quite long which is why I use it, but it wiggles much more than the original. I'm pretty sure there was no wiggle at all in the beginning so it must be from using the cheap cable. Note to self (and others): "Don't do that!"

Hi there, I'm having the same issue. The thing is that I don't remember if it worked well from the start.
I always use an alternative charger and keep the original in the packaging.
One day noticed that at least 1/4 part of the plug remains out of the socket. This makes the plug wiggle and remain loose. Sometimes (a Tagwood cable) disconnects by the own weight.
I don't hear the common 'click' when plugging in or out.
Tried different cables, many including the original and every does the same.
I don't know if it is a design issue or a broken thing.
What I can see, I don't find any anomalies. Neither where is bottoming. It looks very sensitive parts so I don't want to touch it.
I only noticed that socket looks shorter than other micro USB plugs.
Sorry for my English.
If there's any suggestions I want to hear it.

Samsung phones have suffered from charging port issues for years. My Note 3 drove me crazy with it. You can try contacting Samsung, but I'm not sure what they would do.

Also 3.0 charged twice faster than other phones.

Guys, my brother had the exact same issue with his.
It ended up being lint that built up inside the port. Take a pin and clean the port out. I was shocked at how much lint (just from a normal pocket) got stuck in the port. Its definitely worth checking.

At first my charging cable worked fine, but over time the connection became very touchy. Based on the post above, I opened up a paperclip and fished around the port area and was surprised by the lint that came out. Now my cable is connecting more securely and charging more reliably. Thanks for the tip!
