I noticed that if I set my wallpaper via the gallery app it gives me a slight lower quality, but if I set it using another app (like personal wallpaper demo on the market) I can have the same image but in higher quality.
I guess I'm asking if there's any alternatives to the stock gallery app for setting my wallpapers. I know the stock app automatically takes the quality down a bit even in viewing so I know this has to be the culprit.

The Gallery app on our phone doesn't increase the detail of images after you pinch to zoom. Does anyone know of a way to fix this or a different gallery app that will do this properly?
If you view pictures directly from the camera app, it shows the full resolution of the photo when you zoom in (but its slow to pinch to zoom). If you do it from the gallery app, it just scales a lower resolution rendering of the photo to fit the screen, but it doesn't actually re-render the image at full resolution (but its very smooth). I'm looking for something that works like the iPhone's gallery app, which scales as you zoom so that the interface is smooth, but once you stop at a certain zoom level, it re-renders the image in a higher resolution (aka best of both worlds).
Just curious, which rom are you running?
I'm running JI6 Froyo. I noticed the same issue on JH7 as well...
It would appear he is correct! Even on a 5MP picture of the underside of my car, I can't get any more detail then I do looking at it normally.
I experience the same thing; my gallery also takes its sweet time to notice new images from downloads or edits in Photoshop. I suspect most of these anomolies are due to the beta Froyo I've been running since it was leaked.
Gallery just sucks , it always had crappy zoomed quality with no details , Be it my Nexus one with eclair -> froyo to Cappy eclair -> froyo.
Its as if your watching thumbnails and not actual pictures.
There was modified gallery a while ago in Nexus one forums not sure if its still around, supposed to be better then default one.

Dunno why camera shots are coming out low res (I'd imagine that it's just the gallery program that sucks), but downloaded photos on JI6 are automatically resized to 305x203.
I actually remember reading some article a while back that talked about this issue (the gallery being low-res), and mentioning that this is by design. Apparently the developers decided that UI speed is more important than photo quality. I wish I still had the url to that article..
Also, forget searching for 'gallery' in the market. All the search results are retarded wallpaper/mostly naked girl spam. I wish spamming the market with valueless programs was a hangable offense.
Have you guys tried the apk from HERE? I have it loaded and while it does load alot slower it does seem to be higher res. Give it a shot, You will have to copy over the current APK in system/app with something like Root Explorer, or uninstall the gallery then try to install. I could not get it to install but coping worked great
I also remember reading an article that explained that the Gallery purposefully did not display images in their native resolution.
There is a free application in the Market called, "Floating Image" that will display images from any folder of your choosing as well as Flickr, Picase and Facebook in a floating collage of pictures. You can then tap on one and use multitouch to zoom in on the photo in it's full resolution.
I use it to display my camera roll as it allows me to see my photos in much more detail as opposed to the built in Gallery that I can't stand. The only issues that I have with it are that it stutters a little bit when using the high resolution thumbnail option and that it cannot see hidden folders.
I think the gallery is opengl-based and it treats photos as textures, which are limited to 1024x1024 res.
If you don't mind losing the 3d effects, download an app called JustPictures!. It's now my default photo viewer. You can double-tap to zoom to actual size or pinch-zoom. It's fast and free.
Bonus: slideshow live wallpaper
Did some searching and found an article that talks about the issue:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2362605,00.asp
Apparently Google chose the cool 3d gallery instead of better image quality. Its clear to me why lowering the image quality is wroth it for making things smooth, but I don't know why the app can't render more detail after you zoom in. Anyway, JustPictures! works pretty good and does show better details. Its a bit slower (and the stock gallery isn't particularly fast), but it gets the job done. I wonder if JustPictures! is the best solution out there or if there are other apps worth checking out as well...
Previous posters are correct that the lower image quality is part of how the program was built. However, there is an article on this site that has a link to the HTC gallery version which can improve the quality, but still is not truly 1 to 1 quality, jest better than stock.
I cannot seem to make this work. I choose HD 60fps in the video camera options and yet when I play the video back it is not slow motion. Is anyone else having this issue?

Is it playing back at 60fps?
Thread moved. Please post in the correct sections of the forum in future. Questions go in Q&A.
Thanks

I wondered that too. But. When you go to the camera application, the one it shipped with, then press the video camera icon to switch it to video mode, on the bottom left a slide out toolbar is revealed. if the icon that looks like film negative is pressed, I get four options: normal video, video mms, slow motion, and time lapse. On pressing the slow motion button, "HD 60fps" is shown at the top left of the screen. When I press the record button, and play the resultant video back on the phone, It plays in real time. I copied the file to my computer and it played back on my computer; it plays in real time. Right clicking the file and then >properties>details showed 60fps. When I record in the "time lapse" mode, the resulting video plays as it should, fast, the clouds or what-have-you roll by. I called Motorola today, spent half an hour, talked to two customer service reps. Nothing. The second one went and got their "hands on Photon Q" He didn't even have a "slow motion" icon in the place I described. I then asked him if the firmware was updated on the phone. It was not. I have "77.8.10.XT897.Sprint.en.US" which is the recent update I believe. Would someone mind just trying this slow motion feature out and telling me whether is works for my piece of mind? Thanks!
Just checked this, an apparently when you record a video with 60fps mode, you then have the option to adjust the playback speed in the lower left corner (landscape orientation) from 1x to 1/2, 1/4, and 1/8. This option is missing on normal videos. Haven't tested yet how it translates off the phone on youtube or such. Maybe setting the playback speed sticks in the file?

Well done man Thank you
Wow! you are observant!
I did not notice the x factor in bottom left! I tapped it, changed the speed, exported the file to dropbox, played it back on my computer and it was in slow motion. Is this documented and i totally missed it? Even the Motorola folk were confounded...
****s awesome, I'm gonna have some sweet ass gifs for 4chan.

That made me lol
Umm, I was mistaken
The video is apparently taken in 60p. It plays back in 60p which makes it real-time. The Photon can play it back at 30 which makes it 1/2 speed, and smooth. Exported, a player (VLC etc) wants to play it back at 60fps = realtime. As far as i can tell, you need to change the playback speed with an editing program to have it play back at another speed (say 30p) in a normal player. Hope this helps ...
Hi,
I have the P30 for about 5 days now and from the first day i have some issues with scrolling in Youtube and Chrome, it`s very chpppy. In other apps is fine even though its not fast is smooth. Anyone have this problem? I have the latest update .124 and i did reset it once but the problem persist. I had an HTC U11 and it was super smooth in both Youtube and Chrome.
I also noticed this. As soon as a Youtube video is playing it gets laggy. Same for Firefox, sometimes it just stops, then jumps. Seems to be normal, i hope they'll fix this. That's the one thing i loved about Sony phones: They're so damn smooth.
I noticed this too. It's fine at first, but once a preview video starts to play on the main feed, it gets choppy, but only when scrolling down. Scrolling back up remains smooth.
Haven't noticed this so far. Made a quick test on YouTube, with and without video playing and the scrolling is smooth. Only if I scroll very fast and it has to load more videos it will get stuck from told to time but I think that's normal

i dont think so.. I have a oneplus 3 and its pretty smooth in youtube videos.. I bought a p30 5 days ago and in noticed the laggy youtube too. Hope it fix soon
I've noticed this also. I've also seen a few reviewers report this.
Hopefully sorted in a future update.
Experiencing choppy scrolling as well. Mostly in Chrome on pages with lots of ads, videos and photos. Not having any issues in YouTube though.
No laggy issues with firefox app in youtube page
I got my P30 2 days ago, and updated to the latest EMUI out of the box. Tried replicating the issue, based on the descriptions above, but have thus far been unsuccessful (which is good!).
Yesterday i updtated the youtube app and no more laggy issues!!!
I'm still having the issue even though I updated the phone and youtube.
another issue is in google maps when you start the navigation tool.. the laggy in youtube persists when you watch the video in 1080p 60fps...
I notice it's a bit choppy when I'm playing SimCity Buildit and I visit other players' cities. Is it something to do with the refresh rate for those apps, maybe? Could that be clashing with the P30 refresh rate?
version 161 is still very choppy laggy in video playing apps (e.g. YouTube)

I have version 161 and it's still very laggy and choppy whenever video is playing.
So i tested my P30 and no issue in youtube app. In chrome when scrolling sometimes it is laggy because the animated ads start oalying when scrolling. Beside that no issues. Im on 161 firmware.
Just bought P30. The phone is fast but scrolling in bluetooth(when searching for device) and YouTube makes me a little angry... I hope they will fix this soon.

Same here. The scrolling is also very slow on some apps ( not choppy, just slow).
Same here, got a Huawei p30 some days ago, awsome device but Youtube app get's low frame drops and choppy when:
- Scrolling comments while video is playing (if video goes pause, it's smooth)
- When going to wide full screen, videos seems to have lower framerate (not 60)
- When autorotating the screen from vertical to portrait and forth
Is there any way to adivice Huawei or Google about this? plenty of post in even other sites has the same issue with Youtube.
Exactly same issues on my device. Waiting for fix.
Hello everyone,
I just recently switched from a HTC U11 to this wonderful MI 10 Pro and I couldn't be happier.
There's just one little thing that I realized and I don't know where I did something wrong in my settings or if it's a ROM issue.
Whenever I watch a Video in full screen, the phone kinda cuts off the sides (probably to fit in the full screen instead of putting a black bar over/under the video).
I find this quite annoying because I'm sometimes missing out on important information that's sometimes written on the screen.
This happens with all apps I tried (Instagram/IGTV, YouTube and Kiwi Browser).
Have you experienced that behavior before and how did you solve it?
I attached a Screenshot on how it actually looks like.
EDIT: I'm on MIUI Global 11.0.10.0
Have you tried pinch to zoom out?

Pinch to zoom only works on YouTube and only on horizontal videos. Not working on Instagram at all, Browser at all or on vertical videos on YouTube ?
Are there any settings somewher in the system that I need to check?
