Leds hack does not work on the nexus s, is there any alternative?
i would like this too. I put my phone in clock mode most nights and leave it on my night stand. The screen dims very nicely and looks great except for the 4 buttons on the bottom stay bright white!
This would be a nice thing to have. i need to look in the services.jar to see if anything can be edited to accomplish this task.
With my rom and kernel combo the backlights don't come on until pressed when turning the screen on.
Using cm7 and netarchy 1.2.3

Is there an easy way we can implement this mod? I think it would look better having the lights off - giving it more of a complete black slate look.

do any of you guys experience the issue where the capacitive buttons dont light up when theyre supposed to ? which is almost.... always ?
one really annoying thing for me :|
Yes, you're not the only one to have this but It's very intermittent for me.

In my brief time with the DS, the buttons lit up just once. In anything other than full light, they were useless.

well tbh i dont have DS ...yet. im thinking if i should buy this or incredible S :| had optimus 2x in mind.... but its got issues lol.
any1 tried to play dungeon defenders on this phone ? if so ,does it work smoothly enough ? and btw, hows the loudspeaker ? good quality or still crappy -.- ?
My experience is that buttons backlighting simply doesn't work. Sometimes they light up (no matter if environment is dark or bright) but most of the time they don't. Completely sporadic behavior. Makes it difficult to use device in the dark. Engadget has highlighted this problem in their review of Desire S http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/10/htc-desire-s-review/
hm... looks like it works for me okay
Swapped the DS for an Incredible S, backlit buttons work perfectly. So suspect DS software issue?

I haven't noticed any problems either, they are lit when they are supposed to.

Works fine here.
Seems ok here.
Very bizarre - got rid of the DS after a day mostly for the wifi issue, but to a degree also because I could not see the buttons in anything other than full light! They literally came on once and that was when I connected it with my PC.
How can that be so when other folks don't have that issue. Different software versions?
Everything ok here.
DS S-OFF with superuser and BusyBox installed. (ROOT)
Maybe a hard reset would had helped.
There are well reported software issues with the buttons, basically the phone detects the background ambient light levels and decides whether our not to light up the buttons
Sometimes in a dark room the presence of a bright light source such as a window or a bright Tv stop them from lighting
unfortunately there us nothing we can do.
Although considering that the buttons don't change positions I always know where they are and which one is which so I can't see what the real problem is?

Ive had to get used to guessing where the buttons are as well.
As an aside you can force them on by putting your thumb over the front camera.
Not a solution but useful when your stuck.

Covering front camera doesn't help in my case IE buttons don't light up.
if you cover sensors on the top left of the screen (one cm to the left from HTC logo) the light should turn on after 2-3 seconds.
Its not the front camera that performs the light sensing it's another sensor thats located on the front face of the phone just to the left of the word hTC under the glass.
you can test this by covering the top left of your phone with your left finger/thumb and after 2-3 seconds the buttons should light up.
edit: sorry just realised that I said same as post above.

I noticed when my phone gets to about 20% battery left my hard key backlights turn off and on every 5 to 10 seconds. Is this normal?

They turn on and off according to the same sensor that controls auto brightness, maybe it is the ambient light.

Not really sure how to answer your question, however, I usually turn off my hard button backlights toggling Screen Filter on and off. There is a setting in there to not turn off the backlights if you'd like. Using the widget as well as the shortcut allows me to have different brightness levels, and the ability to choose whether I want to backlights on or off (I prefer off.)
They do seem to turn on after a while somehow.
Is anyones at&t htc one X capacitive lights calibration seem to be off. I've noticed must of the time they stay on. Even under bright florescent lights at work. They only go off pretty much in direct sunlight. Or if I hold the phone up to the light. And before anybody asks I do not have a case blocking the light sensor. It does react to my finger when I place over it.

I think that's somewhat normal for this device, which is why there's a mod in the dev section that you can flash (assuming you're rooted/bl-unlocked) that will either disable them entirely, or dim them to an acceptable level.
Use the app adjbrightness in the app market and you can fore them to be off all the time

Yup, I think that's just how its calibrated. I've noticed the buttons lit when there is plenty of light. And there have been a few times where the room lighting was very dim, and the buttons were not lit, when it would have been useful for them to be.

Well thanks everyone for the replies. I guess that's just how they work. I will try one of the apps out too and see. I appreciate the input.

Hi all,
Just got my One S today. One thing i notice is that the buttons does not have light. My HTC Sensation have light on the buttons (easy to see in the dark). Is this something i have to turn on?
Seems to detect light levels, It's dark near my PC and the buttons were on, went into the kitchen and the lights dimmed out.
Hold your finger over the t mobile logo on the top to see the buttons light up.
I was freaking out. Till I saw this thread lol

Hi guys!
Iam having a problem with notification led diode. It doesnt work. I havent seen the light yet.
I just tried Light Flow app but it also wasnt able to light the led up.
So i assume that my phone is broken in that part and the diode just doesnt work on my Nexus 5.
Does anyone have some the same problem?

Figured it would be but had to ask. Factory reset as a last resort maybe?

I installed Light Flow. Took a few minutes before I got any lights.
There's a test mode in light flow. Might be worth trying that too.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk 4
Test mode in LF didn't work for me. I was going to uninstall but then I noticed the battery charging light came on. Now all of the programmed lights in LF work for me. I have not retried the test light feature.
light flow might have just glitched up the led for a bit. If it stops working again, try clearing app data, or reinstall, or uninstall light flow altogether. It has been known to have some issues.
In light flow you have to turn off the screen after turning on test mode, if you haven't tried that already.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
Yes, the screen MUST be off for the notification light to illuminate. In addition, at least for Light Flow, it can take several seconds for the notifications to light up, even when performing a test.
Same problem here and it's going to back for a refund. It was actually a replacement unit for the first one which had speaker issues.
I tried everything and never saw the light come on once while the first unit worked fine with the same settings.
try this
Hey guys I was having this same problem but I downloaded this app called notification light widget by Motorola and added it to my home screen activated it and my notification light has been working since just tuck the widget away on a side screen . its a good fix for now
