Capacitive Button Backlight - HTC Desire S

do any of you guys experience the issue where the capacitive buttons dont light up when theyre supposed to ? which is almost.... always ?
one really annoying thing for me :|

Yes, you're not the only one to have this but It's very intermittent for me.

In my brief time with the DS, the buttons lit up just once. In anything other than full light, they were useless.
Sent from my HTC Incredible S using XDA App

well tbh i dont have DS ...yet. im thinking if i should buy this or incredible S :| had optimus 2x in mind.... but its got issues lol.
any1 tried to play dungeon defenders on this phone ? if so ,does it work smoothly enough ? and btw, hows the loudspeaker ? good quality or still crappy -.- ?

My experience is that buttons backlighting simply doesn't work. Sometimes they light up (no matter if environment is dark or bright) but most of the time they don't. Completely sporadic behavior. Makes it difficult to use device in the dark. Engadget has highlighted this problem in their review of Desire S http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/10/htc-desire-s-review/

hm... looks like it works for me okay

Swapped the DS for an Incredible S, backlit buttons work perfectly. So suspect DS software issue?

I haven't noticed any problems either, they are lit when they are supposed to.

Works fine here.

Seems ok here.

Very bizarre - got rid of the DS after a day mostly for the wifi issue, but to a degree also because I could not see the buttons in anything other than full light! They literally came on once and that was when I connected it with my PC.
How can that be so when other folks don't have that issue. Different software versions?

Everything ok here.
DS S-OFF with superuser and BusyBox installed. (ROOT)
Maybe a hard reset would had helped.

There are well reported software issues with the buttons, basically the phone detects the background ambient light levels and decides whether our not to light up the buttons
Sometimes in a dark room the presence of a bright light source such as a window or a bright Tv stop them from lighting
unfortunately there us nothing we can do.
Although considering that the buttons don't change positions I always know where they are and which one is which so I can't see what the real problem is?

Ive had to get used to guessing where the buttons are as well.
As an aside you can force them on by putting your thumb over the front camera.
Not a solution but useful when your stuck.

Covering front camera doesn't help in my case IE buttons don't light up.

if you cover sensors on the top left of the screen (one cm to the left from HTC logo) the light should turn on after 2-3 seconds.

Its not the front camera that performs the light sensing it's another sensor thats located on the front face of the phone just to the left of the word hTC under the glass.
you can test this by covering the top left of your phone with your left finger/thumb and after 2-3 seconds the buttons should light up.
edit: sorry just realised that I said same as post above.

funny htc with all their adjustments ...

Haven't had any probe.. work on light sensor,so if there's light shining on phone then won't work,if in dim lit room then they light up..

what's the point of the notification LED?

It lacks brightness and is hidden behind the speaker grill, I can barely see it light up most of the time. What a waste.
It is duller than I'd like but unless it is in direct sunlight, I have no problem seeing it. I wish it wads a little brighter though.
At least is has one. A lot of android phones don't.
I want to know if anyone has figured out how to make it stay on longer than 5 minutes

Green has been HTC's standard notification color since the g1 first came out. Once the device is rooted you'll be able to use LED color changing apps.
I was wondering, there is another whole on the opposite side of the front reading facing camera and the notification led. I wonder why htc put that there it seems to have no purpose. That probably could have been a nice place to put the notification led.

It's most likely the ambient light sensor, or the motion sensor that shuts the screen off when you place the phone by your face.

That is correct. It is the light sensor.

If rooting will allow me to change the LED to something a little more noticeable (red might work well I would think), that might be ideal.
So far, the green barely stands out, especially since my desk is next to a window with ambient sunlight.

I believe that we only have 2 colors to choose from, the green and the abmer, the one that comes up when charging phone. I always had the amber on my HD2 and it was always visible. Hope we could do the same on this phone later.

The LED light can actually produce multiple colors but like someone said. It's not possible until it's rooted unless the application your using gives you the option.

Maybe the free market app 'Blink' which doesn't require root will work...

If you use a 3rd part text messaging application like Chomp or Hancent it gives you the option to make your LED multiple colors plus the option of how long you want it to stay on.

The G2 LED could only turn orange or green.. I'm assuming most new HTC phones are set up like this.

I hope this isn't the case. The Thunderbolt can do Red, Green, Pink, Blue and White.
i like having a notification led, as opposed to the Vibrant, which didn't have one. I just wish it lasted longer than 5 minutes.
There is an app for the g2x that pulses the four bottom buttons for notifications. its pretty spiffy...i wrote the developer he said it's possible it could work on the sensation but he doesn't have one to try it out.
It would be a pretty nice option to have because I agree, the led as is is pretty much invisible

Question about auto brightness...

When set to auto does anyone have the screen lighten up then darken as you browse through a site?
It is really noticeable when I am on Google+(white background). I don't remember having this happen on my G2. Anyways I now don't use auto.
Just wondering if its normal.
Sent from my HTC One S.
It might be that while holding your phone you cover the light sensor and by that simulate dark surroundings?
I would guess that you have it near some surface. So when it shows white background, the light reflects from surface and the sensor thinks its "bright" outside, so turns on the brightness. As you surf and see some picture or change page (or w/e what doesnt have so much white) the sensor detencs that its not that bright anymore and turns down brightness...
Atleast that would be my guess. Screen does make some light and sensor can get affected by it (its above screen, u can see it true glass).
I noticed this too while playing on the demo at a TMobile store. It was only when I went to the HTC Play or movies or whatever it's called. Some of the movies would darken the screen when they started playing. Kind of odd. I wasn't moving around (changing light on the phone). Just standing there at the counter playing with it.

I believe I have seen this as well. Brief, full screen, yellow flicker/tint.
Happened to me during, or immediately after, the unlock/flash/root process, and haven't seen it since. Happened with a new notification came in, seemed to almost revolve around the notification bar. Is this consistent with what you saw?
This is common amongst a lot of light sensors. Happened to me on my Vibrant and when I had a iphone.

Hmm.. Were there any recent software changes to the device?
Get Z-device test on your phone and test the light sensor on the phone by holding it near a bright lamp or sunlight and then covering it with your finger.
The light sensor is located at behind the black strip towards the top of the screen to the left of the HTC logo.

Im having the same problem. Since i rooted the device the backlights do not work but the soft keys themselves do. The light sensor appears to be working. It was at 100% under a strong light and when i covered it with my finger it dropped to 2%
Had the same problem, go to brightness settings change it to automatic, the lights go on, then back to manual and leave a bit below the maximum, the lights stay on and now works.
I found a software solution for this problem
Hello. My soft keys (T-mob Sensation 4G, stock ROM, ICS) would not light under *any* circumstances and I have tried everything suggested here and elsewhere after scouring the Internet and finally happened upon a thread that mentioned this guy's utility.
Now happily soft-keying in the dark and the app has endured several battery-pulls and restarts without a hitch.
HTH someone else. Cheers.

AT&T One X capacitive lights on most of the time! Calibrations off? Anybody else?

Is anyones at&t htc one X capacitive lights calibration seem to be off. I've noticed must of the time they stay on. Even under bright florescent lights at work. They only go off pretty much in direct sunlight. Or if I hold the phone up to the light. And before anybody asks I do not have a case blocking the light sensor. It does react to my finger when I place over it.

I think that's somewhat normal for this device, which is why there's a mod in the dev section that you can flash (assuming you're rooted/bl-unlocked) that will either disable them entirely, or dim them to an acceptable level.
Use the app adjbrightness in the app market and you can fore them to be off all the time
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
Yup, I think that's just how its calibrated. I've noticed the buttons lit when there is plenty of light. And there have been a few times where the room lighting was very dim, and the buttons were not lit, when it would have been useful for them to be.

Back Softkey Light is out

My HOX got wet in rain and I have dried it in a rice bag for couple days. Everything working again and the only issue is the Back Softkey LED Light. It won't turn on at all. The other two softkey buttons are working fine. Any Ideas? I'm thinking of turning all three off if there is a script or something which sets it permanently.
Please through some ideas or fixes.
Thanks
There are three separate light emitting diodes under those buttons. I'm sure one of them went caput. As long as your digitizer still works you should he fine.

There's a dimmin app here in the apps forum.
I use it myself, can dim or turn off lights, I use the dimming feature for late reading.
About the light, does sound pooched sorry to say, who knows may start up again after killing power to it a while.

My recent button's light went out less than a month after getting it (day it was released). Have no idea what caused it but it looks weird with only two of three buttons lighting up. Up until recently, it would occasionally start working but that hasn't happened for awhile now. I could've sent it in under the 30 day warranty but I had already spent so much effort rooting / etc that it wasn't that big a deal to me. I've recently started using the onscreen nav buttons instead. Didn't like them at first but after using them a while and turning the others off, I just don't understand why htc decided to have them. Wish I could completely hide them (not just turn them off).

I will try to find something which will turn off all three button lights. I hope the broken one comes back sometime once the phone is completely dry.

Yeah, I only really reboot to flash to my alternate daily driver ROM.
I have seen where you need to re-enable it, but no biggie really.
