Poor MKV 720p Playback - HTC Inspire 4G

I was surprised that after using a captivate to play back 720p MKV files that the inspire would struggle so much with these files. I have tried almost every video playback application in the market and all stutter with 720p files. Is there a chance this will change or was their something special with the captivate ad 720p files?
The files are H264 L3.1 MKV's.

having the same problem as well, i transfered over a simple dvd rip and the playback wasnt terrible but it wasnt flawless 30+ fps like on the captivate, gonna try to convert using handbrake hoping that it will make a difference lol. Captivate played everything perfect even 1080p blue ray movies, kinda disapointed if there is no fix for this.

Rock player seemed better but no question that Captivate playback is better.

Dissapointed as well, the captivate played mostly everything I threw at it great, this one has some trouble, try V Player though, seems to be the best for me.

[Q] How can I watch 720p mkv video on Inspire 4G??

Wondering if anyone has a solution here, AVI and MKV have issues playing. The MKVs are 720p HD tv shows, and the audio is great, but the video is choppy\slow-mo. Has anyone managed to find a player or a method to resolve this? I know this has been discussed in other forums, but related to different phones, so curious if there's a specific fix to this phone, or if a 720p is just too much for the Inspire 4G to handle. I wouldn't think so since last year's iPhone 3G and 3GS and 4 can handle it just fine.... I'm thinking something is wrong or I'm using the wrong app.
I don't think the stock video player can do it, so you'll have to try some third party apps like VPlayer, RockPlayer, and Act 1. Let us know if any of those three get the job done. I'm curious too. Otherwise we may need to convert videos.

VPlayer - Same
RockPlayer - Same
Act 1 - Same
None of these seem to work. I wonder if it's the way my videos are encoded? I sure hope not, because all the MKV files I download from the torrents of tv shows I miss are formatted the same way. They always played fine on iPhone
Anyone else experience this issue and find a resolution?
Thanks!
maybe the class of your SD Card, for anything above 720p a class 6 card is needed

Oh really? I don't see any Class 6 or higher on Amazon. Mine is a class 4. Can the Inspire 4G even benefit from class 6? I'm able to watch them off the memory card on my class 4 when plugged into my computer just fine.
the desire hd can support all class cards including class 10, so i cant see why the inspire cant either.
Yea class 4 should be ok i would think? Have you tried different size files?
Is anybody else having trouble like this ?

I have 2 inspire 4g devices, and have tried both a Class 2 and a Class 4 card. I ordered a Class 10 from Amazon (they only had up to 16gb, not the 32GB like my class 4), so I'll report back tomorrow when it arrives.
The file I'm using is a 1.09GB MKV file.
I have yet to purchase the Inspire and this problem is one of the reasons that I am waiting. FWIW I have read many complaints from users having this problem.
I have the same issue
It happens on G1, Streak and Inspire. However, cheap Archos doesn't this issue. Isn't that ironic? I was trying to copy the Archos player but no success...

Clearly it's either the way my video is encoded, or the lack of proper decoder on the android. I am at the end of my rope trying to resolve. I didn't like my iPhone because it's incompatibilities, and everyone with Android said "get an Android cause it'll decode anything" ... lol... wonder if we'll ever have a solution to decode a mkv properly.
You do realize that your phone is only capable of show video resolution up to 400p? MKV is mostly used for HD rips because it ends up having the best quality after compression, but your phone is not HD in the sense that it is over a standard definition television vertical wise (watching it in wide screen format).
Anything bigger will have to be scaled down by the player, sucking up battery life and you wont notice a quality difference. Aside from that, forcing your device to play something higher res will suck the battery life as well because it will be more intensive on the cpu. Why dont you just use xvid rips in avi format? Everything that's ripped in mkv is always ripped in xvid as well.

Yeah that's what I'm going to do is just rework the files. Any suggestion on an easy program for MAC to convert MKV to avi?
Thank you much!
I am using avi format xvid and it still can't play anything in hd. My captivate plays the same files fine wtf.

Yeah, the processing power is certainly there so I guess it's just an issue of improper codec execution :-(
Not sure on a player to watch them on android. I would just go through the top ones on the market place and do trial and error
I dont have a computer with osx on it currently, but VLC (the PC/OSX version) does convert file formats as well and it's free.

Yeah none worked. I think it's just the issue of the MKV file. They don't work on iPhone with any of the players either, I think it just takes more power and video processing to handle them.
Try xyflash, i used this on iphone. Android market has it also so i tried it. It plays 720p mkv bleach videos and sub titles work using mkv sub extractor. Not the best but it does the job i think
Did you guys try lower resolution files but coded in mkv?
Will the Atrix be capable of running 720p mkv files?

I don't even see an app by that name on the market. You realize that not everything for iPhone is for android, and vice versa, right?

will it be ever possible to play hd movies?

it is a HUGE inconvenience and i was wondering if it will be ever possible to play and maybe even record hd movies on the NS? if not, i am really considering to go back to the captivate
Moboplayer? I use that for all my movies in random formats. Haven't tried HD movies yet however. Nexus S screen resolution isn't HD anyways.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
You wont be able to record at 720p it lacks the hardware
As for movies ever since 2.3.3 nexus s has been able to play 720p (x264) movies but still lack proper audio codecs so no sound hopefully more audio codecs get introduced in 2.4 update when ever that comes out but dont hold your breath
If you check in dev section there is a ROM in that includes new hardware codecs but the video player that is required is not 100%

exactly you haven't played high quality HD movies on your phone experience what we are talking about
also im pretty sure he is talking about hardware support Mobo or any other player does software only for the codecs that are not supported by the OS
And ask anyone who had or has a galaxy S image quality is outstanding
Also doesn't matter if the phone is not 720p you dont having to spend time properly converting
This is a big let down for me, its true a few media players can play via software decoding but the nexus s out the box has limited media support.

You can try the hardware multi-codec thread in the dev section. You need to flash the customized ROM though, and install ho player from Market.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052318
I just recommend that you go back to your Captivate. I've had the Vibrant and sometimes I miss that my Nexus S doesn't have the hardware support to play other media files without converting, but I don't use it for media much so it wasn't a priority in the phone for me. Reading from your first post, it sounds like you use the phone a lot for watching media and somewhat use HD video recording. So that's why I recommend that you stay with the Captivate and perhaps wait for Galaxy S II if you're looking for an upgrade. Nothing can really beat the media capabilities that the Galaxy S offers.
What codec are you trying to play? I have HD videos on my Mac downloaded directly from YouTube. With no transcoding, they work fine on my Nexus S in the Gallery app using stock firmware.
H.264 has many different encoding profiles, and mobile devices (even the iPhone and iPad, along with scores of Android and Nokia devices) have limits on both the profile and the bit-rate that they can handle.
With regards to recording, the Nexus S does not do HD recording, and that's fine with me. If I want to record some video (which I do like 4-5 times a year), I'll whip out my Flip. You know why? Because recording video drains a lot of battery, and I need my Nexus S to last all day.

Video player for MKV MP4 HD...

anyone know a decent video player for TF? wiht Tegra2 it even can play decent 720p MKV...
Haven't tried it for MKV containers but Buzz Player works perfectly with x264 encoded mp4 encodes.
Would love to find a player that dims the on screen Honeycomb buttons like the stock player though.
mobo player with codec
change the setting of mkv to software acc' in the setting
I use RockPlayer. Works perfect for me. Don't think its on the market though.

Lite version is but not the full version. The watermark on the top left can be pretty annoying.
It's been mentioned in other forums- DICE Player works very well! The dev mentions in the app description that Tegra 2 might have some glitches, but so far it's been able to play most mkvs i throw at it- even those that mobo and mx (and others) play with no sound!
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.inisoft.mediaplayer.trial&feature=more_from_developer
sadly tegra 2 is unable to fully decode HD using its hardware. dice so far has the smoothest frame rate in all the players out there, but it still lag at certain scenes where there is a lot of movement or fighting. hoping they be able to solve the problem.
anyway was wondering by increasing the processing speed of the tegra 2, will it be able to process mkv better?

It has nothing to do with Tegra 2. Samsung's Galaxy S series are using Hummingbird and can fully decode 720p. It's all software and codecs.
You could always just convert your move to mp4, I've done it to loads of HD movies (LOTR and such) and they run great, even streaming through to the TV via HDMI.

well mkv works the best in dice player atm. hopefully they can optimize it for tegra.
DICE Player is the answer to your problem concerning MKVs. Give it a try, the developer is VERY active on the XDA forums especially in the Transformer forum.
Converting something to another format is unacceptable in the hardware that we're getting. And honestly, it's a waste of time to convert. Just get DICE Player and you won't ever have to convert again.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16224858#
Go there. The developer is actively talking in that thread. Another new version was released today to fix some problems with subtitles and multiple audio streams in a single MKV. Honestly, it's the best player and well worth the $4US to the dev.
MX player is the best the guy above ^ is 100% right.

Mkv/720p or above movies

Hello, playing with my new toy. Have a DHD and quite experienced with rooting etc.
Im currently having some lag issues with mkv and or 720p or above movies. Tried mobo player and the normal one.
Currently have the revolver rom, feels quite good i like the update app which came with it. Going to try revHD rom later tonight to see if there is any improvements.
Whats a recomended video player or rom for movie stuff? Answers on a postcard, Thanks!

Also, hd video is really difficult for the Tegra 2 that barely handles 720p. You can have 1080p, and smooth, but it will most likely need to be re-encoded so that the hardware will like it... you might want to try to overclock, often that solves the issue, even if not always.
If you go for the re-encode way, use h264 basic profile, that's the biggest deal.
Thats really a bummer since i thought the tegra 2 is well capable to display atleast 720p mkv videos having a hd screen. Is it the tegra Architektur which doesnt play nicely with hd mkv material or just software related?
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
Really? The mkv videos I downloaded the other day works just fine.. but I guess it could be because I'm overclocking? I mean, it was 720 p and it was working way smoooth with Mobo so I don't know where your complaints come frmo..
It has to do with the type of encoding. You can get 1080p to play if you encode it right
just tried a 720p clip and it does play smoothly with HW encoding but can not play the sound back. Is it because of the sound track being dts 7.1 ch?
How long takes to convert a video with handbrake?
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
Don't reencode the videos. Use a MKV -> MP4 Tool to reencode the audiostream to aac. It's way faster.
Have a look at my tests http://painfullyrandom.blogspot.com/2011/08/testing-android-video-decoding.html and/or search here on XDA for Tegra hd video. Sadly it's not the best choice for video play... It works but it's far from optimal.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. Try Diceplayer. The only reason it won't playback ANY file well, is because the bit-rate is too high for Tegra 2. All the videos I download are 720P h264 and it plays them just fine. The only time it struggles is when there is fast panning (which results in a higher bitrate if it's a variable bitrate). All things said, I have no issues playing any videos, even those with 7.1 channel audio.
Also, use the search function. This is discussed at length in a few other threads in the transformer forums. I think it was specifically in the Themes/Apps forum.

yes, Dice Player is the best so far. Playing videos is a hit / miss with the rest of the free players...

same here but the audio is "only" AC3 5.1 the video is super smooth but there is no sound.
I don't know where you get your files, but I'm almost sure I don't want to go to that site.
Example:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/420077/Indiana Jones 4_HD 1080base.mp4
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/420077/Indiana Jones 4_HD 720main.mp4
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/420077/Indiana Jones 4_HD 480high.mp4
those are a few seconds from the trailer of Indiana Jones and the crystal skull grabbed from the PSN "some time" ago. Play them at 1ghz on the Transformer with Dice (or whatever you want), and see what works well... I encoded this stuff in a way that shows my point. Same bitrate for all of them.
The original file is main profile, full hd and slightly higher bitrate. Still plays at 1ghz.
Keep in mind that if you make the file hard to decode, the size could be quite small, once I've watched a reasonably good dvd rip that was 250mb. That's the whole point of h264 vs divx, same quality, smaller file. Or same size better quality, depending on your point of view
I just tried the dice player and it plays the test file without problems being 720p mkv. I think Asus should had intergrated such a mdiaplayer by default

[Q] Best app for streaming 1080p .mkv from htpc?

I just ordered the G2x - despite tomorrow being Thanksgiving I am being told it should arrive tomorrow with overnight shipping. Woo!
I'm wondering if anyone uses this phone to stream .mkv video to an hdmi receiver/tv? What app would you recommend for doing this and how does the G2x handle streaming 1080p?
This phone is free with a new 2 year contract or additional line until the 25th. I'm adding a kid's account and decided I deserve an early upgrade. =]
I use this. I haven't tried 1080p .mkv, but 720p .mkv and 1080p .mp4 work great on my G2x.
Thanks! The first comment on the page mentions it doesn't like mkv - I tried it probably 6 months ago and had the same problem. Maybe I'll get better results with 2 1ghz cores.
I'll give it another go when I get the phone.
Bsplayer has wifi/network access built in, and does great on 720p ac3 which other players have had trouble with.
Sent from my LG-P999 using Tapatalk
Thanks, checking it out.
On another note, any replacement HD camera for AOSP 2.3.x? The android camera sucks. =(
I use a combination of apps myself....
To start the actual stream, I use "UPnPlay" which hooks into the DLNA service from Windows Media Player, so you have to set that up on the computer end... UPnPlay doesn't actually display the video however. For that, it loads an external video player of your choice. I use "MX Video Player" because it has a Tegra hardware plugin that does hardware video accelleration. Works perfectly for me.
