Don't know if it is a problem or what but when receiving a new text, the screen does not light up but rather just vibrates, make noise, and have the buttons lit up.
Is this a problem or is it a setting I can adjust so the screen lights up as well?
The AOSP mms app doesn't turn on the screen when messages are received (on this ROM). But you can probably try using something like SMS pop up to have the screen turn on and quick reply if you want. I haven't tried that myself, though.
Anyway to change that?

SMS popup is definitely the way to go. allows you to use your preferred messaging app but gives you awesome functionality with the popup notifications. and quick reply is the best.

if you use the samsung mms.apk provided on the serendipity website, the screen will light up upon receiving a text message.

I read somewhere that face will 'accidentally' hit the black bar on the very top while in call, that's why that "Notifications" screen will show up. The screen list missed calls, number of new messages and reminders.
Install advance config 3.3 and turn on the light sensor. This automatically turns off the screen in a call. If it isn't this, then i don't know what it would be.

Thanks. I'll give it a shot. My screen do turn off when it's close to my ear though...
I have a similar problem...
You could try switching to a Leo phone dialer/canvas; i used one that disabled the notification bar during call...
Or you could also try using Touch InCall Screen Tweak. Install the cab, and in the settings screen go to the options tab and check "Show phone at screen on"
So, if you end up pressing the notification bar when putting the phone to your face, this option makes the dialer show up again, and you don't have to close the stupid notification bar. Works for me.
Seeing as that the Captivate does not have a notification LED, it sometimes becomes a problem noticing new notifications. I just want to know if there is some kind of application that would flash the screen for a few seconds or so when the phone receives a new notification. I remember my iPhone doing that and it would be cool to see Android phones doing the same.
Look in the development forum for captivate, there is a thread doing this exact thing

No, I know about the red dot on the screen thing. I dont really need that and besides, I believe it kills battery. I just want some app to turn the screen on for a few seconds when I get a notification.
Maybe go to the noled thread and see if he'll add that feature
my screen does flash when I get a message. It pops up in the notification bar and shows two lines of the message then shuts off.

It does this when it is sleeping?
I just tested it. When its locked and the screen is off it revives itself when I get and MMS or SMS. For emails it does not.
handcent sms will do it when you adjust the settings for the popup menu
Oh, maybe it only works for SMS and MMS notifications only. I would like the screen to flash on for every notification (Gmail, Feedr, AIM, etc). Kind of like how the iPhone worked with push notifications.
It looks like the touch surface at the bottom of the device has slight translucent look about it. Might it serve as a notification LED as well?
I think the chances are good. I noticed that as well.
Also, in the video over on android central of the g4 rom running on the nexus, he mentions led notifications built into the rom. I'm not sure if he mean built into the hacked rom or the standard rom.
Hopefully there is

I can confirm that there is LED notification located just to the left of the ambient light sensor. There is also a Notification flash setting under the display settings. Flash LED light notifications optinos include: Missed call, SMS/MMS, Email, Voicemail, Reminders, and Alarms. Of course it is also used as a charging notification.

Great now I have to decide... HD7, or myTouch 4g?
I'm kinda scared to shift to a new OS, just because it is so new that I have no idea if it will adjust well with how I use a device, however... if I get the 4g it will take forever for official updates to come to the device...
So hard... I guess I will have to try both devices at the T-Mobile store.

Definitively android. wp7 will be a flop.
I too can confirm. youtube wirefly's channel. they got a unboxing AND a small review. (the review has the notification light blinking)
Can anyone who has actually used the phone confirm that there's an LED for notifications and that it's functional? Thanks.

Yeah i only see the one in the top left hand corner. But it would be nice if the track pad had an led light
is there anyway to make it popup and automatically turn on the screen like handcent? Handcent misses alot of text and this app works better but doesnt actually turn the screen on with the pop up.

Sure, it has, go to "Preferences"--"Notification Settings"--"Popup Windows Settings", enable "Unlock screen"
will you be adding led notifications to go sms anytime soon?
I use the app "No Lock" so that I have no Lock Screen (time wasting and useless).
my problem is that my screen does not light up when I get an SMS when lock screen is off. if I switch lockscreen back on it works.
Any idea for a workaround?

I love the app. I've tried both handcent and chomp and they send my msgs multiple times to my contacts and this doesn't! Thanks. Hope it continues to be do so well.

Ok guys please post all questions in the thread that they concern
I just came from an iPhone 4 and this is my first Android phone (I've used a touchpad with CM9) and I have a fairly simple question which I can't seem to figure out.
When you receive an SMS, or any notification for that matter, the phone will beep or vibrate but the screen remains black.
How can I change the settings to have the screen light up and show the notification I just received like iOS does. I assumed this would just be a standard setting but after searching the phone and internet for about 10 minutes I gave up.
Thank You and sorry for the noobiness. Plz dont kill me I swear im not trolling.

i'm guessing he means without 3rd party apps... in which case, i don't think it's possible - at least until we get custom roms.
that's one thing i really miss about my GSII - that, and BLN. the LED on this HOX is so small, i tend to miss it, even if it's blinking.
So wait, your telling me there's no feature built into ICS that makes any sort of a notification pop up on screen on? That's absolutely ridiculous. What am I supposed to do for push emails? Just listen to the beep and have to go toggle the screen each time I get one to see if its important or not?

you should still get the notifications if your screen is on... i thought you were talking about making SMS and emails light up the display on your screen when the screen is off and you're not using the phone. if you are using the phone, and you get an SMS or email - assuming you are not currently in either of those programs - you should still get a notification.
if you are in fact talking about getting the screen to light up when you receive SMS or email and the screen is off... then yeah, unfortunately, you just have to hear the tone or feel the vibration, and if you miss that, look for the LED. eventually there will be support for making the screen light up, and even BLN (back light notification - where the capacitative keys light up when you receive a SMS or email) - but it's going to take custom kernels for that stuff to happen.

it is kinda bad... for now.
once the bootloaders are unlocked, the real fun will begin, and this stuff will be no problem to implement into custom roms. just gotta be patient for a little bit.

Um, you had to do the same thing with an iPhone. If you missed the initial screen turn on you had to do exactly that. Toggle the screen. Before iOS 5 it was even worse. So calm down and explore your HOX. While you will have to toggle your screen, to make up for it you can customize your lockscreen to quickly allow you to see certain notifications.
If you go to settings -> personalize -> lock screen style and select productivity you'll be able to keep track of your notifications extremely easily.
Otherwise yeah, an easily installed, non-invasive app can quickly fix your problem. If a text makeover isn't what you want check out an app called SMS Flash. It's my favorite least intrusive UI notification pop up. You can't reply from it like you could from SMS Popup or Go SMS Pro pop up notifications, but it does show you them and is slightly customizable.
If you go into the messaging app, then go to settings > notifications. There is an option called notification preview. This will turn on the screen and show you a preview of the SMS you just received.
Also under Personalize > Lockscreen, then select the second option called productivity. This will list all of your active notifications on the screen similar to iOS.
You can also access the notification tray from the lockscreen, provided you don't have any sort of security on (PIN, Pass, Etc).
I also think you're being a bit nit picky about not having the screen light up for every notification. That is just as easy to miss as anything else. You have to be looking at the phone to see that. If I'm working on the computer the sound of a tone or vibrate is much more likely to get my attention. You turn the screen on to check the notification when you're ready... I don't really see a problem. Turning the screen on for anything other than incoming calls/texts seems like a waste of battery to me.
Android is a bit different in that the options aren't centralized. Options for notifications are within each app itself. Some apps (like Facebook app Friendcaster) may include optional popup notifications.

pretty sure that SMS option won't make your screen light up when you receive texts... all it does is place the notification in a square in the middle of your lockscreen, so that when you hit the power button to unlock your phone, you see that square on your lockscreen, rather than having to look for the little icon in the upper left corner of your notification bar.
You get a notification up top....fyi you can pull down the notification bar down and check whatever on the lock screen. You don't actually have to unlock this phone to access notification bar. Love it. My infuse was not the same.

i actually prefer it NOT to be built in to the OS....i have this thing called CHOICE here in the Android world....and I choose NOT to have that feature baked in....i dont want my screen coming on at all, unless i tell it to.....i fail to see how having a third party app that handles this, a bad mark
Handcent SMS is a really good messaging app (better than default IMO). It has a setting that turns the screen on when a message is received. I'm not sure about email because I have never bothered to look for an alternative.
@Pirateghost What if you still had the CHOICE to install a 3rd party app that kept your screen off? Everyone has different preferences, and the OP is upset it isn't available in the stock app. Seems reasonable to me.

Agreed.
Secondly, unless the phone is directly in front of you at all times and you're able to see the screen light up right then and there, then I don't see a difference. If the phone is in your pocket and the screen lights up but you failed to hear the notification, you're still screwed.
