I hope somone can compare the camera quality of both the modded stock and the 2.2.1 freeX10 app.
I would have done it myself but i reaply not that good, it seems that i have really shaky hands.
Also, if somone can clarify if the FreeX10 camera app and for example MIUI camera app in wolfbreak's CM rom ( which is based on freeX10 as far as i know ) give the same quality ?
Any opinions are welcomed
I was about to post this in the appropriate thread but since your asking I actually ran a few tests myself today....to my surprise the free x10 beta 4 camera app came out noticeably better. Something im gonna ask 28spawn to look into. I thought for sure his mod would be better, but it absolutely wasn't. Gonna run more tests again tomorrow, but I think I already know what one will win.

I took a look on what you posted there, glad that you did.
For me i was looking on photos taken with both the MIUI and the stock mod but really couldn't decide which are better -.-'
Also, did you notice the shutter speed or thats placebo ?

What i strongly noticed between the 2 camera apps was the free x10 focused better on the surrounding picture...where in comparission to the stock camera mod which shows signs of trouble focusing.
I can upload pictures for you....the freex10 camera also brings out more natural light when taken under low light....with the stock mod i kept getting a slight pink tinge.
The difference between the pictures is noticeable.

What I meant was the entire picture in whole. The free x10 camera app focused better on everything within the entire picture....where as the stock camera mod showed signs of trouble. I did tests in low light (in my house) and tests outside in daylight. Out of about 15 comparisons the stock camera mod came out better twice....but only focused better....those two times the free x10 camera app still displayed better color (more natural).
Now I just made another discovery...i flashed my phone with seus tonight....and I used the default se camera on my phone (.435 firmware) against my wifes x10 using v8 of the stock modded camera (also .435) and the se default came out better 3 of the 4 tests. The one pic where the modded camera focused better the default se camera app still produced better color.
Before .435 firmware came out the mod was clearly better...but now in sticking to the default se camera as this mod isn't producing better results with the .435 firmware.
When I compare all camera apps (se stock .435, .435 modded app, vignette paid, free x10 beta 4) the free x10 beta 4 is the winner hands down of all of them. I was shocked with the images it produces.
@28spawn: if you happen to read this don't take offence please...i still appreciate your work. But I've ran enough tests the last few days to clearly see which camera apps produce the best results.

Im a fan to....but since the .435 firmware I was skeptical with the mod. That's why the last few days I have been going crazy comparing camera apps. I think 28spawn can fix this, but he needs to look closer at what's going on in .435 firmware.

Here's a comparison I did down in my gamesroom in my basement. Notice the color that comes from the modded camera....its awful. Both cameras were on the exact same settings..ev, white balance, metering, etc etc.
first THX for the pictures, second for the comparison its better to compare pictures in full resolution and with good light conditions...the yellow tint can be removed by software, but im always interested in overal detail and good focus instead of colours that can by adjust in e.g. photoshop

I compare pictures in good light and low light....those pictures were obviously low light...but I don't want to have to mess around with a photo editing program all the time just to get a better picture you know? And im sure most people would agree. I do compare at full resolutions...and also I zoom in on certain areas and compare that as well. The photos I posted were just to show the bad color im getting from the modded app....almost a sepia effect lol. Anyways, tomorrow (today) since I haven't been to bed yet lol I will be comparing these two apps (mod vs se stock) in good lighting conditions.
Did you compare any yet?

OK I have no problem to run all photos throught software even automatic contrast/levels make a good job and its fast and can be done automatically (Xnview) anyways both of us prefer different photos properties as I said for me is sharpness and detail the most important
So the stock camera app + the lines in the build.prop for better HD videos is the best solution for 2.1?
I'll go back to the stock app later, but can't make much tests...

Also, are you using multi-auto focus or infinity focus with the 2.1 cam(s)? If not, you'll notice much better background detail using one of those over single auto focus.
*Edit- I am still convinced that video and focus have improved in the modded camcorder regardless of the build.prop additions. I take more vids than pics, so sticking w/ v8 for now...

v8 modded apk is much much better, imho. Look at my post here to see the comparison. I took those photos with touch capture mode, because that is the mode I use the most. Most of the times, I do not care about the background, I just want to focus on one item. Stock camera app just can't focus! But with v8 mod, it looks really good.

Here's a couple more comparisons between V8 mod and stock .435.
There is no way you that the mod is taking better pictures.
by the way for both of these I used multi auto focus on both phones like someone suggested to me.
Im gonna go back to V7 just for the hell of it...I know its supposed to be the same, but Im gonna check it out anyways and see if there is any difference.
I would also be delighted to see more results, i have not yet tried 28Spawn Mod, but loved the idea of it - so i have d/l it and am just trying to find time (still trying to find a preferred ROM!!)
I must say - overall i was totally disappointed with x10's camera - when i decided to take the x10i I had no experience with any smartphones, nor had i read any forums (noobisms) but i chose x10i over htcHD - imagin my dissapointment when i found out the camera had a light - instead of a flash - and seemed to take worse pictures that my wife's htc desire (5.1 camera) see here

I am coming from a Vibrant and although by the time I bought this phone the Vibrant was laggy, GPS was hit and miss, and allot of apps would force close, it still had a very good camera. I don't understand why this camera at 5mp takes such poor pics. Strange. I started the other thread because mine were NOT so good. There are limited settings in the default camera, and I have set mine to the highest resolution and do not see any other adjustments in the setting menu.
At the wide mode, my files were only .6 - 1.2 mb (compressed I am sure). Yours are 3 mb - and much better quality - are you using the OEM camera?
I get MUCH better shots using the 360 Camera app - but not when using the stock camera app. If you are using the stock camera app - is there a setting I have missed?
I vaguely remember a post that said the camera is not set to 5MP by default. You have to set it to 5MP within the settings.

I set it to 5MP first thing - so-so pictures followed.
I use Camera 360. The uncompressed images look far better than when using the stock camera app.
It's unfortunate that the stock camera app doesn't allow manual compression settings. But that's why we have developers.
stock camera compresses the s out of the shots.
Go vigenette or camera 360 (all these were taken using either of the 2)

heh, I could have been in any of those pics. I was at Don's Bogam BBQ the other day (down the st from pic #3), playing with my new MT4G at dinner.
There are quite a few out there, what do you think is the best camera and and what apps have you tried (if you think one is best, but haven't tried others, not very valid tbh!)
Myself, I would like one that takes pics in the same ratio as my phone screen. The Desire HD would do this. I know you actually lose resolution, but they look better on the phone...
Can't say I've tried them all, but Vignette is pretty good. It has a wide range of options to select from.
+1 for Vignette - I use it all the time
you can check out my review of it from the link in my signature
Had a quick play with Vignette, certainly seems very good. I love I can set the volume rocker to be the shutter release!
Is there a way to change aspect ratio of the photo's, so it takes full screen? If I select Full Screen of 16:9 as the frame, it does this, but crops the photo to only be about 600 by 300...
Another +1 user for Vignette here =D
Camera Magic is the one i use most. Just because it's fast and has both rapid fire mode and timer mode.
Camera 360 ultimate is kool also.

I'm shopping for a new camera app right now, as the stock one for AOSP ROMs is horrible. Can't believe how crappy it is, especially after coming off a modded Sense ROM (Virtuous) where that camera kicked ass. Right now I'm torn between Vignetta and Camera Advance. It seems that most here like Vignette, but what about Camera Advance? On Amazon it only got 3/5 stars, but after playing with the "free" version it seems pretty good.
Thoughts? Suggestions?
Miui Camera or Sleek Camera. Miui is basically a prettier version of the stock camera and seems to work well on CM7 if you turn down the resolution.
Sleek Camera is a little bit buggy but it takes high quality photos on CM7 roms without any bloat or all the extras of Camera 360 and others. I highly recommend this app as a partial fix for CM7 users.

Little Photo has some nice effects although I wouldn't say its a camera replacement app. Coming from the iPhone which has so many wonderful camera apps, I must say android does seem a little behind. I wonder why it doesn't have the same broad range of apps?
Been playing around with the camera since yesterday and I have to say I'm mildly disappointed. My Samsung Vibrant shot excellent photos for a cell phone camera (my daily driver is a Canon 5DMKII).
Looking at the specs and the size of the sensor this should be a dead ringer for top camera, but the dynamic range seems to be worse than the Vibrant and compression more heavy.
Are there good camera app alternatives that can use the Optimus/G2x hardware?
There is...
I've been using Vignette with my G2, and now that I have a G2X, this app comes in handy even more... besides taking really good quality shots... you can set the volume button as your shutter button. Voila: you got a physical camera button on your G2X.

This is a great app. Thank you so much for the post. I recommend this for all G2x users!
i personally would not use MIUI as HD 720P seems not to work
BUT on the plus side it is made by XDA-Developers
they always make good stuff and are the leaders in innovations for the smart-phone market
(shameless plug maybe I'll get a cookie for it )
i don't see how this app would do anything to improve image quality on the G2X
as the app was generally made to replace the clunky and overblown GUI software that came with the Galaxy S / Vibrant,
so how will that improve the image quality on the G2X
as DataJunkie wants, he did not ask for a better GUI but better quality pictures
maybe i miss-understand
anyway the app can be found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=996867
and a review of the app here
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/install-miui-custom-camera-app-on-samsung-galaxy-s-vibrant/
Just my 2 cents,
i realize i did not try or test this app on the G2X,
so my 2 cents maybe worthless
.

I think I'm going to do a test with 3 different camera apps and lock down the phone on a tripod to compare. I'm interested in knowing how much the camera is held back by software and how much it can be improved upon.

I was disappointed with the Camera app on my MT4G and went with Camera 360 due to extensive compression (at leat 2 to 1) on stock app.
I think this one is much better, and it makes large files per picture which indicates it does not compress that much. Have you checked out all the settings?

Hello Guys, Im new to this forum with N number of Qns , because Im just a beginner of the smart phone users. I have got a new SE Xperia x10 and was very excited to capture the pictures using 8.1M camera.. But unfortunately the quality of the pictures that I have taken so far made me disappoint, still the HD video recording looks good. My question here is when the Video quality is good, how can the image quality be poor that we use the same camera for both the purpose. Also, is there any fix available to improve the camera quality, because i strongly believe that its not a hardware issue.
Thanks in advance
You should have put this in the Q&A section for starters.
The X10 camera quality is far from crap. First thing is turn off image stabilzer if you have it on. I find auto focus to be crap compared to infinity focus, unless your shooting a macro shot.
Use EV control!!! Its your best friend and best feature of the camera....picture quality is 10 times better.
Keep a steady hand when shooting!!!
Lower your EV control (+/-) to about -0.3 to -0.7 when shooting inside or low light and lower it to about -1 when outside on a bright sunny day. Youll be surprised how well the camera actually performs!
Hope this helps

So try Vignette.
i m usin vignette when i wanna use flash in macros... other wise stock app with ev control and without antishake is just good...
I was browsing the LG Nitro HD forum this morning and in one of the threads somebody mentioned this app so I checked it out and am digging it so I thought I'd share.
The app is called Camera ICS, according to the developer it's an improved version of the official camera app in ICS.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...1bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5tb2JseW54LmNhbWVyYWljcyJd
Features
- Color effects (mono,sepia,negative,...)
- Silent mode (no shutter sound, might not work on some devices)
- Picture quality setting (low/medium/high/ultra)
- Video bitrate selection (normal/2x)
- Video stabilization on/off (only 4.0)
- 720p face effects (only 4.0)
- Panorama mode and time-lapse video on Honeycomb tablets
It's not a perfect camera app but for some of us it's perfect for our use. Like me. If I want or need something better then I'll bust out my DSLR. I like it and now use it as my daily camera app. I've done very little testing...taken some pics with this app compared to stock app, recorded a quick video with both and here's my opinion so far:
Faster focus
Better video recording
Less time between shots
Fewer options
No full screen viewfinder
Have to double tap pics to view them full screen
But other than that, it's lovely and fits perfectly with my ICS themed phone.
Trying now
Edit: LOVING THiS CAMERA....try it out

Thats the lovely thing about the Market, u have plenty to choose from. We all have different needs/expectations so its nice to have options......I have used stock, CameraZoomFX, Camera360.....I prefer ICS Camera for its faster focus, better quality pics and overall speed. It's also not bloated with a bunch of features I don't need so for me its perfect.

Yes sir....it doesn't have drag to focus but does have tap to focus....tap the shutter button, it'll focus and take the pic. And it focuses quick too.

Ah, there it is . And right you are, it focuses very quickly.
I think this could be my default camera. Panoramic mode is flawless, and although it has ads... well, that's why we have a hosts file . There's only one more thing that bothers me - barely any integration with the default gallery. I think that the default gallery is actually quite functional and has a bunch of settings that are lost when using this app.

I was blown away at how fast and acurrate the focus is, very impressive. I ditched the stock gallery long ago, been using QuickPic and absolutely love it....and the recent ICS UI update to it is pretty nice too.

Glad you like 'em. QuickPic is my favorite app of all
QuickPick is indeed great.
I actually think that, while ICS Camera is definitely better than the stock 2.3.4 camera, the improvements with the 2.3.6 camera outdo it. With the stock camera it focuses very quickly especially in low light, and although the theme isn't as pleasant on the eyes it is more configurable. Additionally, the video recording capabilities of ICS Camera are very limited. If you take a video in portrait, it is skewed, stretched, and cropped to be in landscape. Also since I'm on 2.3.6 and I haven't edited my hosts file the camera's ads are pretty annoying.
Just my opinion but I'm sticking with stock.

All very good points. This app isn't for everybody, it all depends what your needs are. For me, it's perfect and is now my daily camera app.
