mytouch 4g and a car stereo - myTouch 4G General

My wife's car stereo got stolen a few weeks ago. When shopping we saw a new stereo with a usb port. We got it, I was thinking it would be great, one cable to charge and play music at the same time (Instead of an audio cable and a cigarette charger) We plugged in the usb cable which came with her mytouch 4g phone plugged the mini usb into her phone and the usb into the stereo and set the stereo to usb and the mytouch played music over it's own speaker... I tried it in charge only, disk storage, and usb tethering. None of them worked. When I put it in disk drive mode it wouldn't play any music at all, instead saying to mount the SD card. Can this be made to work?
(NOTE: It's a Sumas Media SM-868CD car stereo)
Thanks
Jonathan

you'd have to contact the manufacture of the stereo.

We decided to take the stereo back. I was just doing a final check to see if maybe there was a setting I wasn't thinking of on the phone. Oh well...
Jonathan

that would NEVER work. the usb on the mytouch4g is for charging and data ONLY. you would have to buy a stereo with an AUXILLIARY jack. then you need an auxilliary cord that is 3.5mm on the phone end and whatever size you need for the stereo. im my case, just a double ended 3.5mm cord. cost me like $2. plug one end in the HEADPHONE jack and the other end in the car stereo and PRESTO, you have music through your phone to your stereo. (just make sure your stereo is on AUX mode)

best way to have done it for that would when you plug the phone into the stereo it will ask to toggle the usb for the SD card. just set to usb disk and hopefully the stereo picks it up. once it does then just browse through the stereo for the music.

That depends on the stereo, some of them are are made for either generic file grouping or iOS products.

Exactly, My car stereo 'sees' my MT4G via USB connection just fine, it does depend on the stereo though. I have the Sony MEX-BT3800U.

You're going to need a name-brand HU for it to be able to browse the phone's sdcard. Sony, Kenwood, Pioneer, Alpine, etc. I'm personally a fan of Alpine.
Or you do it the easy way and just buy a cheap adapter to convert the cd changer port of the HU to a basic aux cable.
Like so.

is there an accessory that will connect the phone to the car using the cars charger spot and the phones 3.5 mm ?
i dont have an aux input in the car, so im wondering if there is a workaround using the car charger type accessory
A car charger can not send audio to your stereo.(period)
You would be able to use an FM transmitter, but the quality of the output will be kind of sketchy. It's all about how much the sacrifice in quality compares to the enjoyment the listening will bring.

is there an aux input in the back of your radio? thats what i had to do? as far as fm transmitters i really didn't like the sound quality
if you have a tape player, you can get an adapter that will use the 3.5mm jack but the other end is shaped like a cassette tape, and will feed tunes through the head
it looks like this

IF they enable the built in fm it's going to be a receiver not a transmitter i'm afraid.
as for the OP, the cigarette lighter sockets in your car are power only, no audio. your options for getting audio to the car's head unit are
1) get a head unit with a 3.5mm aux input which is your best bet for quality
2) pull out your head unit and see if there is an aux input on the back
3) get a cassette adapter. the audio will be alright as long as you keep the volume output from your phone down. The adapters tend to distort at higher volume inputs.
4) fm transmitter. quality will be crap, but it will work.

[REQUEST] Video output via 3.5mm jack

I've read such a mod has been done on other phones and was wondering if it may work on the Incredible as well. I do have a 3.5mm--RCA cable that I use for TV-out on my Zune.
A punch in the nuts, then a pat on the back lol

Not gonna happen unfortunately. Some portables DO have the capability to output video thru the 3.5mm headphone jack, but that's cause they're wired that way (You can easily see this by comparing the plug of your Zune TV-Out cable to the plug of standard headphones... see all those extra rings? Those are the extra connections that need to be hard wired in order to get video out thru the 3.5mm jack. Now that I've gone and effectively pissed in your proverbial Cheerios, I have some good news! For about $20, you can get the TV-Out cable for the Incredible from Verizon (Gotta call 'em, doesn't show up online) which works beautifully! It even has a port on the actual connector that you can plug your existing USB power cable into so you can charge while you watch/play! I got mine for about $16 cause I have a discount on my account from when I worked for the Evil Mouse and it looks awesome, love playing Asphalt on the big screen or watching movies from it. And now for MORE good news! Got a PS3 or (since you have a Zune, I'm assuming) a 360? Search the market for "media server", there's a few free apps out there. Once you have that set up, you don't even NEED a cable, just fire up your 360 or PS3 and your Incredible shows up as an available Media Server that you can wirelessly stream photos, videos and music from!

[Q] bluetooth problems. phone audio plays through bluetooth connections improperly

I have a Samsung Transform Ultra (rooted, running stock Android 2.3.4). I have a factory bluetooth kit in my car. I also have an auxiliary port in my car as well so I like to listen to music on my phone while driving. The problem is that when I receive a call from anyone, the audio from the call automatically plays through the auxiliary line and not through the bluetooth kit. I have to unplug the auxiliary line from my phone before it works right. The bluetooth kit automatically mutes the radio so it won't play the audio from the call with the auxiliary cord plugged in. So I ended up buying a bluetooth audio receiver for my car that plugs into the auxiliary port. The receiver is a Logitech bluetooth audio receiver that when connected plays audio through the speakers quiet fine. But again, the phone audio still plays through the speakers. I checked the bluetooth setting for each device and this is what they have listed
Here is what my settings for my car kit are:

Here is what my setting for my bluetooth adapter are:
For purpose of comparison, my bluetooth headphones (Motorola HT820) setting are:
Here is a diagram of how my car audio is set up:
As you can see from the screen shots, I don't understand what the problem is and why the phone audio still doesn't play through the factory car bluetooth kit when it's connected via the auxiliary cable or the bluetooth receiver. My Bluetooth headphones work great when I listen to music through them and call audio works perfectly fine through them as well. Is there any way to disable the phone call audio from playing through through the Logitech receiver? Or is there a way to have my phone disconnect the Logitech receiver when a call is made/received and then reconnecting to it when the call has ended? I'm just getting really annoyed with how this works on my phone.

Try an app named SoundAbout. It will route media to "Wired Headphones"...which is your 3.5mm Aux input and route phone media to Bluetooth mono, which is your car's Bluetooth phone profile.

Charging + analog audio over USB

I'm interested in getting a car dock, but so far all of the docks I've seen only connect to microusb to allow you to charge your phone. If you want to get audio out, you have to connect a cable to the 3.5mm jack. Has anyone seen a cable or adapter that allows you to both charge from a USB charger and has analog audio out so I can connect to my stereo? I am aware that microusb does not provide analog audio out, however the android accessory development kit does seem to support audio over usb, so the cable would need to have some DAC built in. However I can't seem to find any. The only option I've been able to figure out would be to buy a USB DAC intended for a PC, connect it via a USB OTG cable, and splice in my charger. But this seems cumbersome and expensive.
Thoughts?
This is something I am interested in as well, however, I really don't think there's any way a dumb adapter could accomplish it without a DAC, like you said.
Probably the smallest option would be something like this, but still expensive; and since it'd be OTG, probably a pain.
My current attempt is to DIY a POGO dock (using the contacts on the back of the phone) out of one of these.
According to some work these guys did the contacts can function for charging and audio out.
I'll let you know if anything ends up working.
Well, I got all my parts in... and ended in failure
(I forgot to take pictures during, but here are some after the fact...)
I started with a Kidigi car dock:
{

}
It holds the phone fairly securely:
But there are three problems:
It looks to have been built for the international version, since the usb plug is about a millimeter out of place. This isn't a problem... unless you're trying to line up tiny pogo contacts.
If you remove the usb plug, the phone falls out of the dock, damn!
The usb plug is modified so it triggers car mode when plugged in.
Anyway, I decided to forge ahead.
I was able to determine where the pogos go by lubing up the back of the phone and pressing it into the dock with some duct seal in between.
The construction of the dock was extremely convenient for this project; it was made of three pieces.
Two pieces are screwed together, and one clips in depending on whether or not you have a case on your phone.
I drilled the clip in piece to just allow the end of the pogo through, but not the whole thing.
Then I drilled the other two a bit bigger to fit the whole pogo:
I put the pogos through:
And epoxied them in on the inside of the two screw-together pieces:
All the connections worked!
I temporarily tacked on some wires to the pogos and was able to charge the phone.
However, even after playing with a ton of different resistances, I wasn't able to convince the dock to output audio from the other contacts.
I didn't know if it was because I was on a sense 5 rom, so I tried cleanrom 6.5 (basically stock), and JB aokp... no luck.
Long story short, I'm just going to use the dock as it was intended and deal with having two wires coming out of the phone
I try this one - http://www.ebay.com/itm/Black-3-5mm...Phone_PDA_Cables_Adapters&hash=item25825f2273
but no audio out on the 3.5mm jack

Car head unit as Galaxy S4 docking station

Hi,
If you know a bit of hardware you will find this usefull. The idea for the dock started quite simple: control the phone from the steering wheel using the USB port. Once that was ready the maker in me said:
"Hm, that is good but how cool would be to also charge the phone ... yeah USB Host and Charging does not work together but there have to be a way ..."
and once that was done again:
"Nah, it is crappy to put one cable for USB and another in the headphone jack for audio ... how cool it would be to channel the audio through USB also?"
And here it is how it all ended up (+lots of info how it works and how to build your own):

I believe it is plantronics brand, do not know the exact details ...it came broken in half (literally)
anyway - any usb dac will do (USB DAC == USB Soundcard) just check with OTG cable that you phone will recognize it and play musing throught it.
Cool stuff. Like mentioned before .. A bit too much for me to take on as I don't have enough free time to set up. If you got yourself into making and selling these then I think you'd be on to a winner. Thanks anyway.

If you are willing to:
* loose the ability to control the phone from the steering wheel
* loosing your cigarette lighter socket (a car charger should in there)
* have another cable hanging around for the car AUX
you may take a look at theiBolt docks - they can also charge the phone plus emit sound using the USB port (you do not have to connect another cable in the headphones output)

Cheers dude will look into it. Having steering wheel controls would be sweet though.
