Car head unit as Galaxy S4 docking station - Galaxy S 4 Accessories

Hi,
If you know a bit of hardware you will find this usefull. The idea for the dock started quite simple: control the phone from the steering wheel using the USB port. Once that was ready the maker in me said:
"Hm, that is good but how cool would be to also charge the phone ... yeah USB Host and Charging does not work together but there have to be a way ..."
and once that was done again:
"Nah, it is crappy to put one cable for USB and another in the headphone jack for audio ... how cool it would be to channel the audio through USB also?"
And here it is how it all ended up (+lots of info how it works and how to build your own):

Too complicated for me, but what USB DAC are you using?

I believe it is plantronics brand, do not know the exact details ...it came broken in half (literally)
anyway - any usb dac will do (USB DAC == USB Soundcard) just check with OTG cable that you phone will recognize it and play musing throught it.

Cool stuff. Like mentioned before .. A bit too much for me to take on as I don't have enough free time to set up. If you got yourself into making and selling these then I think you'd be on to a winner. Thanks anyway.

If you are willing to:
* loose the ability to control the phone from the steering wheel
* loosing your cigarette lighter socket (a car charger should in there)
* have another cable hanging around for the car AUX
you may take a look at theiBolt docks - they can also charge the phone plus emit sound using the USB port (you do not have to connect another cable in the headphones output)

Cheers dude will look into it. Having steering wheel controls would be sweet though.

Please help?? Using the TP mic when usb to 3.5mm adapter is plugged in?

I've searched, but can not find an answer to this.
I have one of those little adapters that lets me plug any 3.5mm earplugs into the Touch Pros USB port. There is no mic on the adapter, so when its plugged in, I can not make phonecalls. I was wondering if there is a way to use the built in mic of the TP while the adapter is plugged in?
Thank you
Any ideas? I hope what im asking makes sense?
I´m also wondering
Sorry to keep asking , but id really like to be able to use voice command and make phonecalls while the usb port is in use with the 3.5mm converter.
There is no way to force the TouchPro to use its own mic even when it thinks a headset is plugged in?
No. Buy a stereo headset with mic.
Or if you own a $6xx 3.5mm headphones then buy another USB converter with mic (see pictures below)

I searched eBay for a solution like what you are showing there, since i had a feeling it is what I'd need. I could not find it though. So i came here to ask. Its not that i have expensive headphones, its that i attach an FM transmitter to the 3.5mm port, while driving, and want to be able to still make phone calls and use Voice Command.
I would buy the USB converter with MIC that you pictures if i can find it.
Thanks
EDIT: noticed the picture was from expansys. Found the product, but its 15 euro. A lot more than the 3 euro i payed for 2 of the mic-less ones. Its annoying that i cant turn the TPs mic on for free

I saw you edited your post above. Yes, Seidio and Expansys are normally over-priced their stuffs. The worst here is both of them jump in bed together.
Thanks, the only place i can get it seems expansys.ie. The other two are American shops. (Im in ireland ).
I guess i will have to go for the cable. Still, out of curiosity, there is no way to force Windows Mobile or the TouchPro, or whatever is responsible, to not reroute the mic? It HAS to route both the mic and sound once the 'headset' is plugged in? There is no override somehow? Even if its a hack.

Forcing USB audio ouput - possible?

Is it possible? I bought this mini USB to 3.5mm adapter and the description said it was suitable for the S710. Actually, it isn't. So I'd like to know wheter it's possible to force the phone to use the USB-output instead of the speaker.
The phone doesn't detect the headset.
Thanks in advance. I tried to find it on the internet, but that didn't work out. My excuse if I missed something.
I am not actually expert with that but I think, one of audio part's pin is not connected properly, or some part of electronics is missing. I am suspecting pin 9 marked as S - look at ExtUSB pinout).
I was just about to buy one of those adapters, but now I'm hesitant. Is this a common problem with the s710?

Indeed. I also purchased this one today. It seems to have a slightly bigger connector. It's only 2 dollars so the price isn't an issue, but I just want to have it work.
The description should say extUSB to Audio (if it's not extUSB it might not work).
Look if the pins of your phone are dirty or something.
And no, with an extUSB to audio converter this doesn't happen (so not a common problem)!

I don't know, I only got the cable without any description.

This was the one. The default headset works fine.
Look at the USB part if you have 6 little pins in it. If you don't, you haven't ExtUSB converter.
Hi 3lmo,
...the one in your post looks like a normal USB connector. There the 5 pins of the USB are used to transport also the Audio (i.e. audio and USB/charge are not possible at the same time). This is used for some devices like Motorola Razor V3 or differently for BenQ E72.
The ExtUSB from HTC has added to the 5 pins of the USB another 6 on the other side of the plug insert. The original 5 pins are used only for USB purposes - not for Audio which uses the other 6 pins. There is info in the net about the details somewhere. Just take care that you get the extUSB type. The second one you got should work (I have the same from the same vendor).

Charging + analog audio over USB

I'm interested in getting a car dock, but so far all of the docks I've seen only connect to microusb to allow you to charge your phone. If you want to get audio out, you have to connect a cable to the 3.5mm jack. Has anyone seen a cable or adapter that allows you to both charge from a USB charger and has analog audio out so I can connect to my stereo? I am aware that microusb does not provide analog audio out, however the android accessory development kit does seem to support audio over usb, so the cable would need to have some DAC built in. However I can't seem to find any. The only option I've been able to figure out would be to buy a USB DAC intended for a PC, connect it via a USB OTG cable, and splice in my charger. But this seems cumbersome and expensive.
Thoughts?
This is something I am interested in as well, however, I really don't think there's any way a dumb adapter could accomplish it without a DAC, like you said.
Probably the smallest option would be something like this, but still expensive; and since it'd be OTG, probably a pain.
My current attempt is to DIY a POGO dock (using the contacts on the back of the phone) out of one of these.
According to some work these guys did the contacts can function for charging and audio out.
I'll let you know if anything ends up working.
Well, I got all my parts in... and ended in failure
(I forgot to take pictures during, but here are some after the fact...)
I started with a Kidigi car dock:
{

"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
It holds the phone fairly securely:
But there are three problems:
It looks to have been built for the international version, since the usb plug is about a millimeter out of place. This isn't a problem... unless you're trying to line up tiny pogo contacts.
If you remove the usb plug, the phone falls out of the dock, damn!
The usb plug is modified so it triggers car mode when plugged in.
Anyway, I decided to forge ahead.
I was able to determine where the pogos go by lubing up the back of the phone and pressing it into the dock with some duct seal in between.
The construction of the dock was extremely convenient for this project; it was made of three pieces.
Two pieces are screwed together, and one clips in depending on whether or not you have a case on your phone.
I drilled the clip in piece to just allow the end of the pogo through, but not the whole thing.
Then I drilled the other two a bit bigger to fit the whole pogo:
I put the pogos through:
And epoxied them in on the inside of the two screw-together pieces:
All the connections worked!
I temporarily tacked on some wires to the pogos and was able to charge the phone.
However, even after playing with a ton of different resistances, I wasn't able to convince the dock to output audio from the other contacts.
I didn't know if it was because I was on a sense 5 rom, so I tried cleanrom 6.5 (basically stock), and JB aokp... no luck.
Long story short, I'm just going to use the dock as it was intended and deal with having two wires coming out of the phone
I try this one - http://www.ebay.com/itm/Black-3-5mm...Phone_PDA_Cables_Adapters&hash=item25825f2273
but no audio out on the 3.5mm jack

Hi. Thanks for the info.
Im a bit concerned, as your pin-out seems to be the reverse of this one here:
Soldering:
Start with the audio cable:
Solder left channel wire to pin 2
Solder right channel wire to pin 3
Do NOT solder the ground wire yet
Now with the usb cable:
Solder red wire wire to pin 1
Do NOT solder the ground (black wire) yet
With the resistor:
Solder 1 resistor leg to pin 4
Solder the other resistor leg + audio ground (yellow wire) + usb ground (black wire) to pin 5
Can you advise which one is correct and what size Resistor to use for my Glaxay S4 i9505.
Thanking you.
My picture is full correct, just test gnd with multimeter

DAC OTG charging
First - special thanks due to LEENO for audio micro usb out + charging simultaneously solution: 357K
Great!! :highfive:
Well I found a really overwhelming sound quality improvement on my S4 in my car with the "HiFimeDIY Sabre Android Digital to Analog Converter" Unfortunately charging is not working in this case.
Can anyone tell useful resistors for using OTG DAC audio + charging simultaneously?
I can imagine an approach on this fact: I own the HDMI adapter "Samsung ET-H10FAUWEGWW". Additionally to the HDMI video signal simultaneous charging + digital audio out is possible.
Any ideas?
Charge need high size gnd

I think I want a usb Female to Felame - but not sure.

Hi all,
got a bit of an odd one for you all to ponder over. I recently purchased a magnetic charging cable. One of these
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201496892947?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
It has a very small adapter that plugs in and lives in the micro usb slot on my note 3. The cable end then attaches magnetically and away we go - charge and data - pull and it drops off. Pure magic.
The pondererance is how do I connect OTG devices? This adapter is a snug fit and designed to stay put. For socket damage I would also prefer it stay that way. The lead goes to a normal USB male. So to connect I think I need a usb Female to Female - such a thing does exist here
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-x-USB-2...515514?hash=item20cfdff93a:g:~9kAAOxy4t1Sf0rr
but I am unsure what is wired to what - and indeed what should be wired to what... So
1) is this the right thing - plug the magnetic lead into it then plug a USB pen in to the other end and away we go?
2) if not how should a female to female be wired? I have plenty of usb extension leads and am willing to cut a pair of them to make the appropriate adapter?
3) if there are no definitive answers how safe do you think it will be to try? I am thinking get the one from e-bay and then plug in a usb pen. Best case it just works, bad is the power is wrong and it kills the pen (upsetting but I can live with it). Worst case it blows up the phone. What chances do people think for just working or damaging stuff?
Open to any and all thoughts and suggestions...
Keverso
Personally, I would give it a try - learning by doing. But I think the chances are not quite high that it will actually work.
Here is a scheme of the difference between OTG and regular USB.

So - if I am reading this correct I take two extension leads - cut the female ends and join each colour to the same on the other lead (assuming both leads have the same colour code) and that should (with a little luck) work? That sounds easy enough. I am obviously worried about killing something but I have got an old galaxy 1 phone kicking about somewhere as well as a usb pen I would not be too upset to lose. I may well give it a shot this weekend and see what happens... I will report back if I do.
Thanks for the help.
