Gingerbread with 2.2 Kernel - Defy Android Development

Hi,
Well we have an Froyo Kernel (UK,Orange,Chinese) well the guys at the XT720 got Froyo with 2.1 UK Kernel to Work.
Someone gonna try 2.3 with 2.2. UK/Orange Kernel?
That would be something really nice we could work on
Cause with 2.2 UK / Orange we have perfect working Froyo, now there ist only 720p (half done) ,FM-Transmitter (seems impossible) and finally Bootloader Cracking(really hard work) left for Developers
We could use CM7 or Milestone Gingerbread Port
Regards

the guys that are working on milestone baked a fully?! working gingerbread, can't the same method they used to get it working on milestone be used for our defy? i also read that custom kernels can be loaded on droid x and milestone
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/pr...5-getting-custom-kernels-running-droid-x.html
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=941346
can anybody make an attempt!?

I dont care about pays rom or s.froyo all what we want is stock gingerbread or even cm7 but no more froyo blur roms plz!!!

Unfortunately I can't find any information that they actually used the kexec method to load a fully custom kernel. I'm hoping they are still hiding it for the public to get rid of bugs. I fear though it's never going to happen. Despite that fear, a true CM7 on our Defy with a Moto kernel would already be quite nice. The custom roms so far are nice, but they are nothing more than adaptations of the original firmware. There is still Moto stuff in them, and don't we all just want to have Gingerbread on our Defy?

Honesty.... Gingerbread is the worst update google has done.. might as well wait for Icecream for some REAL update besides some phone off animations. Before we even got a froyo rom I attempted to port it with advice I got from dexter awhile ago... obviously didn't work.

All I can say is can't wait for blurless tmous froyo (cue jboogie)

2.3 doesn't seem to do much really...

It would be nice to have the latest ginger just to have the latest ginger to keep our Defy up to date.
I agree with jboogie3, it would be better keep some energy to concentrate our efforts on the next release during this time if you don't like blur stuff I would advise the latest jboogie3 rom which is really fast and as blurless as it's reasonable to be (only miss ginger keyboard which has improvements and drawbacks .
A core CM port would be nice though.
Cheers,
Kribou

I hope Motorola gives defy little ginger, because froyo its close to final release.
I think that Motorola developers will not stop there.
But its only me..

Yes, there are few small changes, but if the kernel could be ported that will be nice...maybe in some we could really have fully customizable roms on our defy

I just want 24bit gallery back.

Unfortunately even the deblurred ROMs aren't running stock apps. They still have Moto contacts, moto dialler, cmp and more at a minimum, not to mention there are moto services you can't get rid of.
It's not that I don't appreciate the work the devs are doing with ROMs but all I really want is a proper Froyo stock ROM, maybe one day I'll get bothered enough to try and make one

at this moment the most we can do with rom deblur, is to change
some applications aosp with some blur .... not easy to delete all app
motorola, there are some default app that you just replace them, but must rewrite the correct library for it to work properly, such (for example) as a keyboard (or gingerbread Android) ..

Everyone, could you plz save your efforts with all the blur roms and start baking stock roms cz I believe it is possible but just needs alot of work, so to all the devs here can u all work on the same project of unlocking the bootloader and porting stock roms, plz!!!

are you serious?

Gingerbread keyboard works dandy on my defy.
There is a port for 2.2 devices...
Gingerbread is all in all a nice update. made my hd2 faster, better looking and added this little orange bumps to the lists...
btw: 2.3.3 enables a lot of apps made for multiple processors.

There are many kernel sources (and more sources) available on motodev
ex:
https://opensource.motorola.com/sf/go/projects.moto_defy/frs.defy_skt.jdskt_u3_02_20_0
https://opensource.motorola.com/sf/...ects.moto_defy/frs.defy_latam.jorla_u3_6_14_5
There are sources of the 2.1.1, but i find nothing related to the 3.4.2 build
but kernel Makefile shows v2.6.29 and not 2.6.32

Common Misconceptions About the D2.

So after seeing many things that is said with the D2 I thought I should write a post like this. This is just to clear up confusion so users can have the knowledge to use in the future.
Every ROM for the D2 is AOSP
I have seen this said many times and it bugs me that people think that all ROMs are AOSP. As of now, there are actually only a few AOSP ROMs for the D2, cvpcs' Tanzanite/Obsidian, Cobalt, and blackdroid's Ultimate Droid. Other ROMs like rubiX, Liberty, ApeX, and Fission are basically Motorola ROMs with the blur applications replaced with AOSP applications. Now this does not actually make it AOSP. It has features from AOSP, but there is much more to it than the applications. These blur-based ROMs actually have other AOSP-like features, such as lock screen music controls and a few others. Now that also doesn't make it AOSP, those are just a few features that were originally modifications to AOSP to add more functionality to a ROM. That doesn't mean these ROMs are bad in any way. They are actually very good. The only downfall of them is the fact that they are limited to what can be done.
There can't be AOSP ROMs without a custom kernel.
Another statement I have been told or have seen several times. It is considered AOSP if it comes from Google's source. A kernel won't affect the fact that it was built from source. Although it would be ideal for a custom kernel with AOSP, it isn't needed.
A custom kernel is needed.
This is another incorrect statement. It would be nice to replace the kernel, but it isn't needed. The kernel that is provided to us from Motorola includes basically everything the end user would need. Also there is overclocking(although it isn't the easiest implementation) by adding a temporary module to the kernel that is erased after the phone is powered off.
Gingerbread won't come to the D2 until Motorola releases a new kernel with their Gingerbread update.
Incorrect. What the original concern was that Gingerbread would not boot with a .32 kernel(the kernel the D2 has.) and that it needs a .35 kernel. This was later proven wrong with D1. The D1 has been running Gingerbread for a bit now with a .32 kernel. Now I know people will say it is is a different kernel or something along those lines, but that doesn't matter. Gingerbread will boot on it without needing to replace the current kernel.
Fantastic post. Very clear, informative and I learnt more in the 2 minutes reading your post than the hours I've spent reading other threads.
Top stuff.
"Most truths were once deemed blasphemy"
Whats taking so long for Gingerbread then?!
Nice write up, very informative.
Matt, can you check out the MIUI thread in D2 development? Another developer and I are working on the port but we need someone with really good D2 experience to look over the rom and tell us why it gets stuck on the moto logo each time, we would really appreciate it if you could check it out for us.
Thanks,
ljbaumer
P.S. nice post it's really clear and will help out noobs.

This is now irrelevant, take a quick jaunt over to MDW where P3Droid has released full stock moto gingerbread builds for both D2 and DX in update.zip formats (new blur builds). Only catch with them at this time is that no one has figured out how to root them yet, but you can restore back with a previous SBF.
What differences could be expected if GB were to be paired with a .35 kernel rather than the .32 kernel of the current Moto GB leak?

I'm pretty sure they've rooted the GB builds... I had superuser access and could boot to recovery and everything. You do have to SBF back to them though, I learned that the hard way.
I am running the rooted Gb and loving it. I would love to see a cm7 version for the Droid 2

I think it's more that none of the active XT720 developers have the time or knowledge to do it yet. The Milestone 1 has 2.3-based ROMs without an official 2.3 release, but they are all built from source. I don't think anyone has a working 2.1 or 2.2 ROM built from source yet for the XT720 (although stlifey is very close to a fully working source build of CM6 for the XT701 so keep an eye on him). Once someone figures source builds for XT720 out, progress will be much quicker.

So 2.3 and beyond is technically feasible even with the locked bootloader - we just need our devs to have more experience?

Keep in mind that even though we are using froyo right now, the kernel is still an "eclair" kernel. We need one of two things, either Motorola unlocks the bootloader, or we find a newer kernel that will work with our ROMs. Neither are very likely at this point.

Well, we don't know what the hardware requirements for beyond 2.3 will be, but otherwise I would agree. I see no reason that a 2.3 port using source would be impossible, esp. since Milestone A853 which has very similar hardware has done it already. Milestone A853 has exactly the same locked bootloader situation and uses 2nd-init. At this point the only things we can't replace are the kernel* and the partition tables. There are a few of us working on it and there are others (esp. in asian dev forums). I may not be the first--it's still beyond my skill set at the moment but I'm learning a lot from stlifey's XT701 and nadlabak's A853 ports.
*technically we can use our own kernels, but it's impractical (requires manual boot while plugged into a computer via USB)

I'm pretty optimistic the kernel can be worked around, but you're right. There's no guarantees that the kernel we have has all of the features that might be required in the future. But I think the CM7 for Milestone runs using either the eclair or froyo kernels (with the eclair kernel considered the most stable the last time I checked).

[DEV] GreenBreadMod - green lensed cameras mod for official GB!

THE DEVICE HAS BEEN MODIFIED SO THAT IT CAN NOW SHOOT BOTH RED(NEW) AND GREEN(OLD) CAMERAS.
I've been unable to make green lense kernel modules work well with new kernel. GB kernel is dicks!
So i performed a fusion of 2.3 firmware onto 2.2 kernel via 2nd-init.
Pros:
Stable kernel
No ultra-bright buttons
Cons:
Somewhat slower than official 2.3
Live Wallpapers don't work
Contents:
2.2 (3.4.2-177) kernel
4.5.134 ramdisk
EGL drivers from Froyo
Camera libraries from Froyo
Sensors library from CM7
libsurfaceflinger/libserver_init from Droid2 GB OTA
libcamera wrapper by me, based on CM7 wrapper by maniac103
BlurCamera ported from Froyo (GB one is not stable)
Installation:
Install official GingerBread via nandroid + fixed sbf
Install 2nd-init recovery 0.6.1 or later
Install zip from recovery
Download:
http://tihiy.net/files/greenlens/GreenBread_1.1_release.zip
Make mirrors.
Disclaimer:
This is tested on latest (134) leak but may work on older or newer releases. I'm interested in results on those.
This is beta mod of beta firmware with frankenstein-esque methods
This may or may not work on red lenses
I'm not responsible for your damages

How many times does it needs to repeated there is no such thing as gingerbread kernel. Kernel is one thing android version is another! Gingerbread can work with 29 32 35 kernels. Moto uses 32 to GB and froyo too.

stlifey made a port of CM7 to XT701. That is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1064090
If download links are dead there, let me know and I can mirror/reupload.
I think this is the main development page for the XT701 CM7, but the forum seems to be down for maintenance right now:
http://bbs.gfan.com/android-1297281-1-1.html
It doesn't work on XT720 yet. This is where things stand:
Using Milestone XT720 2.1 sbf
If you use a Milestone XT720 sbf, then it doesn't boot. I've been modifying it and have gotten it to go further with adb logcat working to get some messages out. This is the latest version I've been testing that makes it the furthest before rebooting:
http://www.multiupload.com/ULWN2ERP02
The radio panics and panic_daemon shuts down the phone. If you modify the init scripts, you can disable panic_daemon. Then it will boot to the point that zygote tries to start but has a library link problems so I've changed too many libraries .
From Korean Motoroi XT720 2.2 sbf
sktjdgns1189 figured out that if you flash the Korean Motoroi 2.2 sbf, root, install OpenRecovery, and apply the XT701 update without any modifications it boots up, but the digitizer doesn't work. You can do some things like long press the camera button to get the camera to come up and you can take pictures. See
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118236
Eventually it will crash and reboot. The bad news is that for some reason after you flash the the Motoroi sbf on Milestone XT720, you can't use volume-up to enter OpenRecovery. So you have to use adb ("reboot openrecovery") to get back into OpenRecovery. But I haven't been able to get adb to startup. So that means you're back to sbf for the next try. I can't figure out why the touch screen doesn't work.
sktjdgns1189 has also figured out how to get the battery notification working:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1124927
Edit: Forgot to mention that we're now pretty sure that sktjdgns1189 has a Motoroi XT720 based on his photos. I've reproduced most of his results on a Milestone XT720.

I see! The google translated posts just seem a little strange because I guess "ah" and "oh" would come at the front of the expression in English. It can seem like reading threads where everyone is talking about Candlejack and then sudde

Yeah, gingerbread is much more attractive than 2.2 and below all around. Plus it's supposed to be faster (and CM is supposed to be even faster) and have other goodies... would be so fantastic to see this for the XT720.
if you want to use adb
just use 2nd-init (default.prop : ro.secure=0, ro.debuggable=1, persist.service.adb.enable=1, persist.factory.allow_adb=1)
(and some code in init.mapphone_umts.rc (it for adb on bootup))
then you can use logcat/dmesg and etc even on bootup
wait and sad
CM7 would be a dream come true.
Best of luck guys, I will be watching
Wish I would know how to contribute to this happening... would make me feel better knowing I was making some progress. Well, hope this goal is attainable.

No, Dexter posted that in his XT720 thread. I saw that the other day and was considering mentioning it, but I'm sure Mio and others are doing everything already.
Here's the post Dexter is responding to:
"From my understanding of the situation, Cyanogen is out of the question, for now. Dexter's roms are modifications of the official MOTOROI XT720 2.2 (KR) for our handsets. Due to the bootloader lock placed on the phone by Motorola, we can't compile our own systems based on the android sources.

I know its sense 2.1, but what android version is it?

Given the market icon that represents android 2.1, I'd wager it's just a modified stock rom...could be me, but wasn't this done more than enough times already? Like almost 2 years ago? Android 2.1 is completely obsolete and nobody really wants it anymore...plus, liquidsense and nfx are already the best 2.1 roms out there...nothing can really be done to improve on them...OP, why not just use Android 2.3? I could just ruu and root if I wanted this
Holy Miracle Batman! It's alive! (Been trying to flash ROMs all week trying to revive this HERO from the dustbin...all other ROMs have been stuck at the HTC screen and bootlooping.)
Thanks for making a ROM that works for my HERO...now I got music at the gym! Just in time too...3 minutes to spare!

That's good job man. Ive been wanting to learn how to do this stuff but i just never get around to it.
You took a step in the right direction. Keep up the good work.
good to have another stock rom easily accessible, thanks for this
Multilingual ?
Does this rom support Multilingual?
Thanks
hey money,
if you want to reduce rom size, offer anything non-system essential in an optional update.zip. i see from screenshots you have pacman and nba, those could be offered in a separate zip. if you need any help at all doing this, feel free to ask, and ill help as much as possible. keep up the good work, i know you will go far.
maybe also if we feel froggy we can adapt aroma to your rom and let users choose exactly what they want and dont want?
also i see your on cellular south, maybe offer a separate update.zip for a sprint fix? this would include mms.apk from a sprint stock rom, sprint eri.xml, and telephony.db from a sprint rom. that way both carriers are supported.
