best tablet? - General Questions and Answers

hey guys i recently bought the Viewsonic G Tablet, and i'm probably gonna take it back as i am not entirely pleased with it's performance, i was wondering what you guys think is the best tablet out there right now, excluding the Ipad, as i am not down with apple! thanks guys, and if there is a thread already dedicated to this topic i am sorry, the search function would not work for me. any and all input is greatly appreciated.

Whats wrong with the gtablet? Did you try installing a custom rom on it like CM? I'm actually planning on getting the gtablet because I think its the best thing out there right now for the price.

well it's nice don't get me wrong, but before i invest permanently in this device i just want to make sure there isn't anything better out there. I would like to own a device with a little more developemnt on it already, I'm not sure if i'm expecting to much, but like i said, just want to make sure, i like to "test drive" multiple devices before making a commitment. yes i've tried the tnt lite and the vegan.

The xoom that is coming out looks to be very good, but might be expensive. The asus tablets also look promising. I have heard good things about the Adam but its hard to get and thus expensive. If you like 7inch screens the nook color has a great dev team but the hardware is very low end.

If I was u I'd rather take it back and wait till the Xoom comes out. I have sold my Gtab last week as I am saving money for the Xoom

yeah the xoom looks amazing but 1: I refuse to pay a monthly data plan for a tablet when i already have one for my phone, that's dumb. and 2: I read that the xoom will be $800 and I also believe that that is dumb, i really don't want to pay more then right around $400....

i havent seen acer tabs, even on their website.
got links?

i looked all last night for options
the xoom looks ok, but like people said - no wifi only and 800$??!?! wtf??
adam looks alright.. but its running 2.2.... i dont just want a bigger phone
so i searched around and looked at the asus ones coming out. and i think that is where my cash is going to go.

Thanks to everyone here...

I heard today for the first time that the nook Color was able to be rooted and was super happy since I could run Kindle on it.
Then I found xda and read about the G Tablet. At this price point for the hardware involved, I will be stopping after work tomorrow to grab one then head back here for some custom ROM action.
Super excited to see a solid form factor in an Android Tablet. When I first saw the G Tablet in the Sunday paper, I initially shrugged it off as another "not ready for prime time" tablet. While I guess it technically is, this community has taken it places!
Welcome to the forum. There is a wealth of information here and some of the most helpful people I know of.
Yes, that's exactly how I felt. I haven't gotten mine yet, and I'm still undecided whether or not I should pull the gun or continue to wait for the Notion Ink... but I've been visiting the section almost daily for news and updates.
After having the archos 101 for awhile i thought it was best I keep it and when I saw the gtablet and horrible reviews I decided to keep it but after reading the forums here I sold my archos 101 and never looked back its so much better and don't really miss the media playback aspect of it as Rockplayer has played everything I have thrown at it still gets good battery life. Now my girlfriend kinda regrets spending so much money on her macbook air and was thinking she should of gotten one as well. ^^

Get ready for a long wait, if you didn't preorder the NI yet. Their initial "stock" is sold out so who knows when their second batch will be available. If u can get this tab for 380 or below, preferable low 300s (which is possible if ur lucky) pull that trigger.
There's a lot of helpful gtab folks here so you know there's support and with VS cooperating that even adds more value to this tablet.
Picked up the tab on my way home this evening.
Man I hate waiting for batteries to charge!

There are a number of good threads in this and the Q&A forums that are much more eloquent than I could ever be, but yeah, I have barely (and then, only reluctantly) put my Xoom down in the month and a half since I got it. It's so easy to unlock and root and there's a lot of development happening for this tab. Plus, it's built like a tank.

I know I'll probably get stick for this but these threads really bother me. There are probably 50 of them going right now. Just take the time to look at the ones that are already open, my guess is you'll learn more about the Xoom than just starting another "Why should I buy the Xoom" thread.
because it's rad and you're a geek.
ok ok. Still have 1 week to decide.
yes I'm a geek And i really like tanks.
it was this one or the Galaxy tab 10.1.
I think as long as you stick with one of the android tabs you can't go wrong. In my opinion it blows other tablets out of the water, so far as user community, and potential for development.

Galaxy tab 10.1 is like a plastic toy soldier, well all plastic really, and the ONE magic do-all propietary port. hurray!! Xoom has micro-HDMI, micro-USB with host mode, and the charging port wich is the same as nokia's but on a different voltage...
And yes there are plenty of threads like yours around you should read them or you might get the gods, trolls, orks, rats and critters upset.
Because ipads and OVERATED! Simple.
you should buy a xoom because i bought one...Nah
Because android is freedom.

Should I Buy One?

I want to give my iPad to my wife, and get a tablet that I can reflash ROMs to, and ultimately has flash compatibility. I found one on eBay, totally stock, for $250. Is it worth the money?
1. How does the screen compare to an iPad, Xoom, etc?
2. How does the speed and functionality compare to the iPad, Xoom, etc?
Other thoughts?

1. screen is not nearly as good....let's face it, but certainly good enough. Viewing angles suck, but hell its a tablet, you look at it dead on 99% of the time right? not as fast as ipad but the functionality is much better....tons of options as far as roms to flash, completely customizable, 1.1 or 1.2 bootloader options. A WEALTH of knowledge here for you and a wealth of dev support which has really made this tablet because stock, it's horrible.
This has been my baby since it came out but I am giving mine up, I need some cash flow....I'll sell you mine rooted running cm7 for 225. pm if interested im in the process of putting up a listing

I found one on eBay for 225 actually. There are Honeycomb ROM's with CM7 here on XDA for it correct?
Alright, suit yourself. yes there are honeycomb roms...perhaps you should do a little investigation.....there are plenty of videos out there that show how HC is on the tab....slatedroid is a good source for 1.2 roms.

Actually that one sold... Argh.
Either way I may go with the Acer A500 instead, Staples has $100 dollar off coupons redeemable in the store. Brings it to $299 out the door.
good choice as well...if you change your mind, the link to my tab is in my sig

The pictures of your tablet are quite enticing...and $205?! Hm... How is the speed on it? I hate lag.
No, do not buy one. Viewsonic has stopped supporting it. It's pissed most os us off, to the point that we've decided to not buy anything made by Viewsonic ever again. Additionally, I can't logically recommend any of their products to anyone either.
The only thing that makes this tablet usable are the 3rd party developers on this and other sites. Without them, this thing wouldn't have sold nearly as well.
So, DO NOT BUY ANYTHING MADE BY VIEWSONIC!!

Yeah I think I've already decided on the Acer Iconia A500. I printed off one of those $100 dollar off coupons from Staples, that would make it $299 out the door.

Good luck, and congrtulations. If it's not too much trouble, can you post on their facebook page letting them know why you decided to go with a competitor? I know it won't help you much, but it would be good for them to know that we have a voice that's being heard.
thanks!

Looking into this tablet

Hey guys, i was wondering what you guess as a group think of this tablet, is it bad? would you change to something else? What are the current issues? Are they fixable? The normal questions.
i have absolutely no problems with mine and am loving it. the development community is great and they are putting in allot of hard work to get really great features. ASUS sends out firmware updates often and keeps them opensource which is really nice. If you do go to get one try to get a model that says B60 it seems to have the least problems. If you get a B70 there is about a 50/50 chance you wont be able to root because of some changes asus made. Most if not all of the issues people reported in the early shipments have been fixed. you may have some lightbleed but that is pretty much standard on all tablets.

may i ask how to and where to look for the B60/70 number at?
should say it on the box near the serial/model number
i'm also quite happy with the tablet, the dock makes it a very viable netbook replacement for me, the (so far) consistent updates from asus are a welcome change from samsung's poor support. the only small gripes i have with it are more related to honeycomb's unfinished/rushed/beta state, but i'm hoping those issues will be rectified in ICS.
I love it but frankly if you won't use the keyboard dock extensively, I recommend the tab 10.1

On the Box. it will be the beginning characters of the serial number.
I do think the best feature of this tablet is that it has a dock.. makes it a good netbook replacement (or so I'd think, only had a laptop before this!).
In terms of computing ability, it's probably at, or slightly better than my laptop, since my laptop is pretty damn old in technological terms (3 or 4 years old, so like 10 technological generations ago!).
I do miss some things on the TF. Netflix (which I'm going to root and use, once I feel ready to void my warranty), the ability to play one stupidly addicting game, and programming environments. Actually, it'd be awesome if there was an app for G-code/Labview/MatLab, but I guess I could always root and get ubuntu for those.
thanks guys! im still looking into tablets. My spending limit is 400 so this one looks to be the best out there right now.

Super: I've had a Xoom and a Tab and now the TF. For the money you will not find a better tablet. Very functional tablet and you couldn't ask for better developer support than the TF has. This tablet is a winner.

thanks! i am getting this one tommorrow as far as i know, and i know to look for B60 as will in the serial on the box. If it is B70 ill still get it if thats the last one they have. As far as storage goes i think the 16 gig will be PLENTLY for me, if not i have a 8 gig SD card.

[Q] Original Transformer or Prime?

I'm looking at geting a tablet and was going to get a tf101 with dock, then along comes the prime....
The question is would I see that much of a difference to warrant the extra £100 and wait for a prime? or do I get a tf101 now?
it'll be primarily used for web surfing, email and the odd doc here and there.....
Hi tthew.
I had the exact same question about 4 weeks ago. I went for the TF101 cause I am the type of person that cant wait. To be honest, I love it to bits. Yeah there are some things that could be better, and a couple of niggles, but nothing to worry about really. I am glad I got mine and haven't looked back.
There is also the ICS update coming soon, so we are led to believe which hopefully will make this badboy even better.
I tried the whole rooting thing, but ended up having trouble when I restared my TF101, but since going back to stock, no probs at all. (Maybe it was just me and my device, I don't know)
If you want a tablet now, go with the TF101, if you can wait and are prepared to spend the extra, then wait.

I kind think i am going to go for the tf101, like you I'm a "I want it now" kind of guy....
plus after reading a few of the reviews the extra benefit of the new chipset seems to come in gaming etc. and I dont reckon I'll be doing much of that on it....

You will be suprised just how many games you will play m8. The games on these look absolutely brilliant. I know the TF201 will be better for gaming, but still, if you are a casual gamer, then they still look and play great. Check out Riptide.
You won't be dissapointed with the TF101, well, I aren't anyway.
Hope you enjoy as much as me m8.
