I've been trying to get a build going from aosp-master for the past week and I think I've finally cracked it.. As far as I can tell I've got all the google apps working, everything syncs up properly including contacts.. but I need some help setting up what have become the standard features of a custom rom. I asked some of this in Q&A the other day but I don't think any devs go in there any more, and I don't blame you. These questions probably belong here anyway..
1) Whats the proper process for rooting a self-built rom? I managed to hack something together by changing the permissions on sh and su, but it won't work on my current build and it probably opened up security holes everywhere. How do you lot do it?
2) What's the correct way to set up a2sd? I've put cyanogen's script in my init script (launched as a one shot service from init.rc) but I'm not sure if it's working properly, or if that's the accepted way of doing things.
3) Where should I set up the links for busybox, in my init script or somewhere else? It doesn't seem to be working from there..
4) The initial boot of my current build is a bit messy.. I get a selection box asking me to choose from 2 setup apps (google or the default), but I don't know how to remove the default one. I'm not using the SdkSetup package or anything..
Any help would be very much appreciated.
1) Make sure adb runs as root (init.rc), and add the modified su binary and Superuser.apk's from one of the other builds.
2) Usually, A2SD scripts are launched as one-shot services via init.rc.
3) Not in the init script... Not sure where, exactly, as the shell doesn't bother to read any "on-launch" scripts
4) To remove that, i'm pretty sure you have remove one of them completely, by deleting the APK.
Hope that helps...
Oh, and POST IT NAUW!
I didn't think there were any eclair video drivers available yet for the G1?

There aren't. That just means no HW acceleration. I think barak got them working though.
Got them working too, tried the one from the Milestone GSM dump and it worked.
But they won't sync, they won't find the server, any idea?

I got Calendar working on Twisted's mod of the x3 rom. I pulled and pushed a whole bunch of apk's dealing with Google and Google Service Providers, but I didn't note which wound up working. Couldn't get any of the other GApps working though and I continually get gapps and acore FCs. I'll poke around and see if I can remember how I got Calendar up and working so I can actually contribute to this conversation next time
I can't get the su binary to work.. i just get permission denied, it doesn't even try to call the superuser app.
My sync is definitely working, but it seems slow.. It just took me 5 minutes to get an email on the device.. I'm not sure what's happening there, I'll look into it tomorrow.. at which point I'll also try to remember how I got the damn thing working in the first place so I can maybe help others out.
Right now I'm so tired my eyes are bleeding... I think I'll go to bed.

Problem: I've tried to download and install the latest update (v1.4.1) to Google Search by Voice. It fails saying it is not correctly signed. I am not able to uninstall it via the Market software. The existing version is present and still works.
I was thinking of manually uninstalling it and then attempting a re-install from the market. Has anyone had any success getting this update to install on CM 4.2.7.1?
I'm running Cyanogen 4.2.7.1 on my HTC Magic 32B, applied over the flashed and clean-installed 1.6 rooted base - no CM Updater. (Seems to give a better, more stable result - may affect the behaviour of the update).
this stupid error happens because of the test keys or the userdebug keys thay cyanogenmod uses. I would download it somewhere online and use adb to replace the old one wiht the new one. It should work.
Yes I have the same problem with same model phone etc. etc.
I understand the workaround will be the same as Google maps 3.2.1 update but I cannot find up to date "Google search by voice" apk. I was wondering if anyone knows a source that mirrors up to date apps, or could even link a tut about how to get apk's copied out of the phones /tmp folder?
Thanks
I'll check out the package name in the Applications settings and see if I can find it anywhere or somehow capture it. Later....won't have any time until this evening.

That's great I didn't think of that, ill whip out those quotation marks and asterisks for google too. Also later...... 00:20 is not the right time for this....... so tempted......!!!
I fixed the maps.apk problem by going into adb and uninstalling maps.apk and then removing all traces of it. Then I went to marketplace and i downloaded it as normal and it now works perfectly.
Try that with voice search
Do we know what the package name is? Usually something like "com.google.android.apps.xxx" Could try uninstalling through adb. Then re-download from the market?
hello, could u plz share the installer? its not available on the marketplace in my country.
thanks very much
success
Ok, I managed to get Google Search by Voice updated to 1.4.1. I'm no pro and it took ages but it works.
Could a mod advise whether I am allowed to post a link to the apk?
I would be happy to post the steps i took but its not something i have done before and worse still, i used cmd not putty (noob error #1!). So the commands and the order i used them in are lost.
Should have used ubuntu..............
the concept consisted of updating the app and simultaneously using this command while it was downloading
Code:
cp /cache/downloadfile-9.apk /sdcard/download
"9" is only because it is the 9th apk i have downloaded and once the install fails the OS deletes the apk.
(for anyone else it would be different. go into /cache and type ls at the prompt to see what your next number will be)
then rename downloadfile-*.apk to VoiceSearch.apk, remove the original in the phone using adb and replace with the updated app.
I will post again tomorrow with clearer instructions but would much rather post a link to the apk I got, if it is permitted
hmmm. doing an 'adb shell rm /system/app/VoiceSearch.apk' and reinstalling from the market still gives you the unsigned error?

yes it will still give an unsigned error.
that is why you need to copy the apk which android market downloads to /cache before it deletes it, i copied it to /sdcard/download. then install via adb afterwards.
you have to manual install the apk to avoid unsigned error, once you have done this any future updates through market will be fine. Maps updated fine to 3.3 after i manually installed 3.2.1
How?

I downloaded the VoiceSearch.apk file and adb pushed it into /system/app on my phone and it works perfectly. The market sees it as installed and valid.
But I inspected my "normal" load phone (which has voice search) and nowhere could i see anything resembling "VoiceSearch.apk".
Where is this file on an un-rooted phone?

Hey guys,
About two years ago when the Droid X came out, I came out with a one click root app for it that was pretty popular. Since I have the Galaxy S3 now and wanted to root me phone, I decided to make it ridiculously easy for people.
Credit goes to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1875914
I simply packaged it up into a Qt app. I will be releasing it on Linux tomorrow and if I can somehow get a Mac (or someone has one) that wants to compile the Qt app for Mac, we can have it working on all 3 main operating systems.
Here's the download: http://www.mediafire.com/?g4mfv432lzk2pj0
And some screenshots to go along with it: http://imgur.com/a/7Eq48
Enjoy!!! I will update with the Linux version tomorrow

It could be but here is the problem i see...
all current root methods that work for ics will no longer work for jellybean. so when the jb ota drops this will be kind of null and void. not saying you couldnt odin back to a ics build then root and upgrade back to jellybeans, but thats alot of extra steps. the best method imo is to odin mr.robinson's pre rooted stock j1 update.

Yeah, I know that. But within a few days a new method will be up and I will update it! If someone finds it useful, then great! When the 4.1 root method (non-odin) is out, then I will put that up!

I'm having problems compiling on my laptop.
I keep getting the error that my version of OS X isn't supported. I'm on 10.7.4, should I be on 10.6 or something?
Anyway, I have an app built, but the bundle doesn't look right. It doesn't contain any of the root tools, and the main executable is way too small.
I don't want to post it here, cause I doubt its functional.
It looks nice though!

Hey! Thanks for trying! So I used Qt version 4.8.3, the open source SDK. You need three libraries to run the app, QtCore4, QtGui4, and QtWebKit4. They have to be in the same folder as the executable if Qt isn't in your Path. The root tools are in there, "debugfs", "debugfsinput" and "su" and "Superuser.apk". I didn't include the Mac adb tool, as I couldn't get it. That should be named adbmac and be put in the tools/ folder of where the executable lies.
I have changed the source to make this customizable for anyone's root methods, if you look here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2000988
Here is cleaner source attached, basically the same. So, in order to get this work:
Build the code
Find the folder it was built into (please use release, not debug)
In that folder, find the executable. This is the main folder
Copy the /root, /tools, /html, /device folders that are in the zip into the main directory where the executable is.
Copy your OSX's adb into /tools and rename it adbmac
Make sure Qt is in the PATH variable, if not you need
QtCore4, QtGui4, and QtWebKit4 in the same folder as the executable
For others to use it, they need those libraries in there, or else they will need to have Qt installed
You can statically link the libraries if you so desire but I didn't want to deal with that.

Ah, that's my problem. I'm still on Qt 4.7 cause the QtADB tool requires the 4.7 libraries. I can update to 4.8 , but it will take a while cause Macs are dumber than Linux.
Question, can't we roll the libraries into the app itself? I know Avid MediaComposer 6 and up have Qt pretty much rolled into the app to run all of the GUI, they even use some python to run some of the GUI for them (its crap for code but its better than FCP X). I'll look into it while I'm waiting for Qt 4.8 to download and install.

Hey! Thanks for the effort. So I actually got a VMWare image of Mac OSX Lion going on my machine and got it to compile. What you are referring to is called static linking and can definitely be done, I just have to compile from source with the -static argument. I'm trying to decide if I should not use WebKit for my GUI as that is the only library that is quite large. I'm going to compile it statically and see how big it is. I might put this up on a private GitHub repo if you want to help work on it.
My idea is that this can be used by anyone to make other root packages. If you noticed in the other thread I sent you, I basically have a very simple custom batch language for them to create for the root method and the rest is taken care by the program. This way it won't discourage people and we can have a one click root truly. Let me know if you want to help me improve it!
Hi,
I have successfully unlocked my motorola phone using the motolora support

Unfortunately, the motorola device does not have su(1) on it.
If I were to get an su binary from somewhere (like, compile it myself),
and store it on the sd-card or in some download directory, would I
effectively have rooted my device?
Without having to load some unknown binary from some hackers somewhere
(like superSu) in order to do it?

If it's provided by Google or from the android source tree, then I would feel secure in using it. Other than that, I avoid solutions where I have to take binaries from unverifiable sources.
And in general, everybody offers some (binary) tool to do your rooting for you, but - once the manufacturer lock is removed - I don't understand why linux isn't linux.

The developer that created the SuperSU app along with many other apps that you might be familiar with is called Chainfire and he's known worldwide, you might have heard of him.
Without him, alot of the custom software and a lot of the tools/apps we use to customize our devices wouldn't exist. He has been pretty much the most influential developer in the entire android rooting and customizing community. If that isn't verifiable enough for you then something is wrong with you. In fact, I'm pretty sure that you have or will require something he developed when you customize your device.
Everyone in this community uses at leat one of his apps.
Android operating system isn't linux, it's based on a Linux kernel but the operating system is very different. The linux kernel is about all that they have in common with a couple of exceptions.
Su binaries aren't something that would ever come from Google or android source tree. It will ALWAYS come from somewhere else other than Google or android source tree, even if you write the su binaries yourself, yours would be just as questionable because they also would not be coming from Google or android source. How would your own su binaries be any different than the ones that already exist?

(unfortunately had to obfuscate the URL due to a limitation of the forum)
and have fetched arm-linux-gnueabi-gcc.
As to running from /system, I've seen mention of this:
mount -o remount,rw /system
Now perhaps I understand what that's needed for.
I'm collecting the information bit-for-bit, but am not 100% sure I'll be able to run with my image and without third-party code...

If you want root, it will be third party code, regardless of what method, software or tools you use. Root is not a stock android or Google product so third party is the only source.
If you're on lollipop, Marshmallow or nougat then pretty much your only option to root your device is to use one of the universal rooting apps and hope one of them works. Otherwise, you probably won't get root.

I use fx file explorer on my tv and i used the feature to easily get the APK from the app.
Or you can use pretty much any apk extractor app that is there on the web to complete your task.
System apps r read-only i think idk if it works for you but it did for me
@houdang
You decompile the app by an online-decompiler like this one
APK Decompilers - Online Android APK Decompiler
Decompile Android APK files online ✅. We will decompile your Android apk for free so you can get access to the Java source code and other resources
www.apkdecompilers.com
Yeah, of crs i know how to decompile an APK, but where is this App located? I don't find that app nor don't i know where i can get the APK from.
App is called "com.huawei.iconnect"
You can query an APK's path via ADB
Code:
adb devices
adb shell "pm path <PACKAGE_NAME>"
In your other thread you mentioned you have deinstalled "com.huawei.iconnect".
Hence it sholud be obvious you can't find it no longer on phone.
Naaa i tried it to find it before uninstalling
But that's a helpful command, didn't know that.
I used the adb shell to deactivate/deinstall.
I gonna give it a try, Thanks !!
Yup guys, i found it, couldn't copy directly but through adb i was able to get it.
The online decompiler just gave me one Java file looking really weird. I will try another decompiler and see if i can find something. That app looks strange .. Many XML/HTML files.. nearly no code - at least with that decoder mention in the beginning.
