Cant get into recovery - myTouch 4G General

So I got the s-off with the
Guide to permaroot, s=off AND s=on!!!!! Im using rom manger but I cant go in to recovery....everytime I go to the bootloader and go to recovery it just reboots the phone. What should I do?????
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App

well since u already know that by going into recovery, the long way, not rom manager shortcut way (witch we all know has it's issues), u have to hold down the power and vol down buttons at the same time, after powering off the phone, you should wait a little bit until it refreshes the status, and then try to select recovery with vol down for scrolling and power for select, once in recovery you can do your magic with the trackball,
i really hope for your sake that this is the problem, and not another that will have to make you repeat the whole rooting process all over again.

Pull the battery then hold down volume and then the power button.

Make sure you have installed clockworkmod recovery. You can double check by going into Rom Manager and using the top option to flash the current recovery (2.5.1.2)
after it has flashed succesfully you should be able to use the "reboot into recovery" option in Rom Manager without a problem.

Everytime i go to recovery from rom manger or bootloader it reboots the phone. what's wrong????

Nothing is wrong. "Recovery" is a standalone, bootable program. It is its own operating environment, and is not an Android App.

I know, im trying to get into recovery to put a new mod on my phone but its reboots everytime I push recovery.

Try installing it again through rom manager. And are you sure you are rooted fully? Try going into Terminal Emulator and type su. Tell me what happens.

Rom Manager only knows what .img files are on the SD card repository it keeps for flashing. It cannot tell you the state of flashed content.
My guess is a failed flash of ClockworkMod Recovery. Re-flash, either with Rom Manager or with fastboot.

Ok I checked if I was rooted and yes it gives me superuser. The rom manger the same as before.

(There's an echo in here.)

When you click recovery, THE PHONE REBOOTS INTO RECOVERY.
Let it sit there after the reboot and see if you end up in recovery...

So if you tried flashing the recovery again thru Rom Manager and it says it was succesfull, I am not sure why you wouldnt be able to get into recovery either by using rom manager or by holding down the volume button and hitting power button. Then choose recovery and it should put you there. Unless you dont have a recovery, then it cant work. It should at least try to boot you into stock or something.
My suggestion would be to set up adb/fastboot and trying to enter recovery that way. If it still doesnt work then you can try pushing the recovery.img via fastboot and see if that works.
Here is a guide for adb/fastboot that takes 2 minutes to set up.

Fastboot is a client/server application. The client is the phone, the server a Linux or Windows workstation with the Android SDK installed. The interconnection is a USB cable.
If you have the SDK, or you've read about it, you may have read of a tool called "adb". Fastboot is like adb. Except adb requires a running Android OS with USB debugging turned on. Fastboot doesn't. It just requires the bootloader to be running. No Android required.
For more information, try using a) Forum search, and b) Google search. They're great tools.

THANKS EVERYONE FOR THEIR HELP!!!!! It's working......

Rom Manager & Mytouch 4G Slide

Okay, is anyone else having a hard time using Rom Manager using it's features due to the fact that the MT4GS is NOT listed as one of the models. I mean, how am I supposed to enter manual flash override if I can't even select MY phone model. What are WE supposed to do???
Sent from my myTouch_4G_Slide using xda premium
we don't have an official recovery yet, so we have to use Modaco 4.0.0.9 for the time being..
WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT FLASH THE RECOVERY FOR ANOTHER PHONE..
That's a lil late however, I think I already did that, now I can't even enter recovery mode anymore, and when I power on while holding the volume button down. I get same message about trying to load and then it says no image. Even then if I try to press recovery I get stuck on the white t-mobile/HTC screen. Mt only option if to reboot. I'm st my wits end. Should I just Unroot and then just Root back again?

YES flash the PD15IMG file and start over from scratch with revolutionary and then upgrade to modaco's 4.0.0.9 recovery. There is no support for the MT4GS in ROM Manager and it's not safe at all to flash anything that's designed for another phone unless you want problems! Good luck!

There's probably an easier way. Download the modaco recovery zip, unzip it and grab the img file and rename it to recovery.img. Then reboot into the bootloader and use fastboot to flash the img. That should do the trick.

Just want to say thank you and I'm going to donate some coffee cash to you later. I followed your method of copying/transferring recovery image through terminal emulator on my phone and now it works PERFECTLY again. I think I accidentally flashed a different version of recovery for a different phone model through Rom Manager. So I learned my lesson. I also spoke with Koush yesterday and he assured me that a fix is on the way for the MT4GS, which is great to hear, otherwise, it's pretty much useless to us.

Where on my SD card am I supposed to stick the "recovery.img" file so that FASTBOOT will see it? I am having no luck finding/loading the IMG file....
I got it figured out. NEVERMIND =)
1) Download MoDaCo's recovery to your computer.
2) Download the Fastboot binary for your computer.
3) I'm assuming you have ADB set up on your computer, so type in "adb shell reboot bootloader".
4) When your phone is in the bootloader, type in "fastboot flash recovery */path/to/recovery.img*" and then "fastboot reboot".
5) You should be able to boot into recovery now.
Thank You Sir. I had already figured it out. I felt so stupid when I did too... It happens though... I guess I should have read more.
Yea I did this by accident once, flashed the MT4G recovery through Rom Manager. I suggest just go ahead and dont install that app at all, you cant really do anything with it anyway since most of the options are unavailable unless you flash CWM recovery through the app. Also, if you are using Unity Rom, CWM reads your device as a HTC Sensation, so dont be fooled. Once you flash the 4009 originally you should be good, if you accidentally flash another phones recovery, none of your nandroids will work

I know that much but it doesn't go to recovery menu right from an OFF state. I have to get to it when the phone is on from rom manager. I'd like to be able to press the up and power button and then go to recovery in fastboot. As of now it gives me the android and the box symbol meaning that it doesn't have CWR. Confusing.
really weird when i had this problem all i did was install CWR from ROM manager
It just won't stick, I have to keep flashing the latest CWR recovery.

just rename the file "install-recovery.sh" which is in the /etc folder. You can only access it with a root file manager (rootexplorer $4 on the market)
make sure your new file is not ending with .sh

1st. post in the correct section. This way you can get your answer quicker and you're not annoying everyone.
2nd. Find yourself a WINDOWS PC and install android SDK and all drivers for your phone to be recognizable. Then follow one of the posts in here to flash recovery.
You could also install ROM manager from the market and use it to flash recovery through it but its always good to have a proper SDK setup for this type of emergency.
This has happened to me before and I have fixed it by flashing the latest cwmr multiple times.
Try using a different USB cable if your com still doesn't recongize it.
PS now I use twrp and i like it a lot better

Would flash image gui work well to flash twrp?
When i use rom manager it says successfully flashes rom but then i reboot and get the sane no boot or recovery img. I dont have access to a windows pc...
Can a mod please move this to the nexus help section?
As stated, reboot from and get rom Manager from market. Try reinstalling recovery or scroll down and there is an option to use older versions and flash an older version.

Im okay with starting over but I cant even get my computer to recognize my NS4G. I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 and I have Android sdk and fastboot on my computer but when I boot my phone into fastboot it isn't recognized by my computer. All "./adb devices" or "./fastboot devices" brings up is nothing!
If I can get my Linux machine to recognize my phone I would gladly return to stock unrooted and start over.
Flash twice in rom manager. See if that changes anything. Don't reboot between just one after another. Also, in rom manager hit menu and clear download cache before you try flashing.

I've had this happen to me several times. The problem happens any time I use an app (i.e. Rom Manager or Flash Image GUI) to flash a new recovery.
The only way I've been able to resolve it is to
1. Flash cwm 3.1.0.1 with fastboot
2. Go into recovery and flash cwm 5.0.2.0.
3. DO NOT update CWM when relaunching Rom Manager or like app.

if you want to go thru exact steps for cwm we can, but you need adb/fastboot working on your pc, and knowing how to use them. I won't have time tonite for a tutorial on that, but plenty of info out there.
also on phone make sure under settings/power fastboot is unchecked. if you are going to use fastboot to flash cwm you need usb debugging check under settings/dev options
easier way is to flash twrp recovery
their thread:

mainly just download goo mananger from play store
open it
tap on menu, mine is the 3 dots
tap on Install OpenRecoveryScript
follow directions
with twrp you can flash radios and most roms without flashing kernel thru fastboot
always have a nandroid and sdcard bu before doing these things
Yes, I've done that already uh sing hassoons tool kit. Probably just stick with reg cwm. Not on recovery much anyways. Have used cwm for a couple years. I tried the twrp rec. For a few minutes.

Hi I have used the tool kit, but some of the recoveries there don't work. I found this file online after searching and it does work with my HTC One S. This is touch recovery, pretty good, actually.
You can just flash the .img file through:
a) adb command(fastboot), might be faster for you.
or
b) you can put this file(extract it first) into the "data" folder of the tool kit, but you will have to edit bat file to be able to integrate your new .img file with the UI. I did this way.
This is the link where I got the above recovery. http://www.modaco.com/topic/353006-...ch-recovery-for-the-htc-one-s-stock-download/
This link also have stock .img you might need in the future. I tried both the recovery and stock files, they both worked well.
See if this will help you out.

Powering on

Hey guys i just got this phone from a random on craigslist and hes unlocked the bootloader and stopped there. I dnt know what method he used but in order to power on the device i have to use certain button combos. Example it boots straight to recovery so i reboot now and while its rebooting i have to hold both volume buttons and the power until a white lettered screen pops up and use volume up to power on. And tips? Ty in advance.

on the white-lettered screen try and choose Bootloader. if you can get there you can flash either CWM or TWRP recovery, then flash a working system, or else do a full firmware flash with RSD Lite. or if he already flashed a custom recovery you could boot there and try flashing a working ROM.
Hes got cwm on here. And from what i can tell just rooted the stock rom. Ive never seen a device having a method to power on except maybe a semi tethered jailbroken iphone. Idk

Any suggestions for roms for when i get this figured out?
Sent from my XT897 using xda app-developers app
The device should turn on normally, unless he did something to put it in a bootloop. That's why i figured your basic option was to do a stock restore of some kind.
Check the dev. sections, but rooted stock is basically the only option at present. There are starts on CM9 and CM10 builds, but i don't think they do a whole lot besides boot up. There is a deodexed version of stock that you can flash, and at least apply some tweaks and such
Right on thanx man ill try it and see what happens.

Ok new topic. I think the dude i got the phone from unlocked the bootloader but didnt root it. He said it was rooted. But when i dl rom manager it said i wasnt. So i guess my question is how do i root the thing?
Sent from my XT897 using xda app-developers app
Ah ok, if the bootloader is unlocked, just flash either CWM or TWRP recovery thru Fastboot, then boot into recovery and flash SU.
Edit: after flashing recovery, make sure to boot straight into recovery by holding the volume up button while rebooting. If you boot into the system, it will probably overwrite your flash with stock recovery.
Hes already installed cwm. I cant use regular boot methods. When i reboot the phone it boots into recovery. Thats when i hold down all the buttons to bring up the boot options screen. So basically all i have to do is flash the su file? Btw I tried doing that along with flashing a kernel and cm9 it wouldnt boot into the rom.

I'm not sure how you're sending all these messages from a dead phone...
But regardless, CM9 doesn't really "work" per se. It boots, sure... but nothing else works.
You're going to have to flash one of the stock backups people posted around. I know there was a .win backup of everything - which you'll need TWRP to restore.
