Wifi Tether with Samsung Captivate Custome ROM - G Tablet General

I am looking at buying a GTablet in a few days. My only means of internet at home it to use the Wireless AP feature or Wireless Tether app on my phone. I am currently using di11is5.6 custom rom. My question is has anybody had any issues with wifi tethering a Gtablet to a Captivate. I only ask because I cannot get my daughters nook to even see my phone as a connection point.

It will depend on which ROM you run, you'll need ad hoc wifi enabled. I tether my rooted G1 to the G Tablet with no issues.

The ROM that I am curerently using is a 2.2.1 based firmware I can connect to it using my linux laptop, my win 7 laptop, and my dual-boot netbook on both Linux and windows, but I am not able to connect my daughters Nook to it it doesn't even see it. I know that her Nook is Android based.

This just enables ad hoc networking as I was saying before in regards to the G Tablet.

I have no issues using the Mobile AP on my Cappy to my Gtablet and the performance is really good. Its pretty simple, just enable mobile AP, scan and connect. I'm running Webstars Ultimate with the Speedmod kernel and tntlight on the tablet. Office depot shouldn't mind letting you try to connect before you buy. That's what I did.

No problem tethering from my captivate to gtablet...good performance.
using standard tnt plus enhance and all is good

Thanks guys for all the info. Looks like connecting wont be a big deal.

[Q] ASUS Eee Pad and ad-hoc wifi

I know that generally Android does not like connect to ad-hoc wifi but was hoping against hope that someone with an Eee Pad can check if that is still the case?
I'm definitely getting one once i can get my molesty hands on some stock somewhere, but when out and about, my trusty Treo Pro only creates an ad-hoc wifi network via wmwifirouter (works excellent with other portable wifi devices i have).
well, I'm using Barnacle with a rooted Atrix 4G and the transformer can't connect to the ad hoc network.
I can't connect my Transformer to my HTC Hero running an ad-hoc WiFi hotspot. However, it works fine over bluetooth....

Ah ha, at least bluetooth tethering works. At least that's an option i have. Thanks for checking guys.
Argh! Does this mean I can't use the 'Wifi Hotspot' app built into my phone (DHD) to share its 3G connection with my Transformer whilst I'm out and about?
Because I was kind of relying on that.
I may have to cancel my pre-order :-(

It's an Android issue in general, nothing specific to the Transformer specifically. The latest wifi tether for root users i think now does Infrastructure mode and also bluetooth tethers as well.

You can tether it through Bluetooth, which is better IMO. Every time I use Wifi Hotspot on my N1, I start having crashes and memory issues. I had rather use BT for this.

I don't know about that particular phone, but if the hotspot is infrastructure mode (like what is built into Froyo), the TF will be able to connect to it and use it. If it is Ad Hoc, then there will be trouble, Android in general does not support connecting to Ad Hoc (could have changed in Honeycomb now, I but I don't think so). I've used my TF with the Infrastructure hotspot on my Optimus phone, for example, it works fine. Figure out what kind of hotspot your phone does.

On Windows Mobile, use wmwifirouter and choose the bluetooth tethering option. See if that works.
Someone a few posts up mentioned that he's tethering his TF via bluetooth to his Android phone.
It definetely depends on the phone. wireless tether to my buddy's HTC Evo worked yet didnt with my HTC Hero. Luckily, the bluetooth does work exceptionally well so theres no worries!

I installed the trial of Wmwifirouter, but the bluetooth tether option is grayed out. Maybe a limitation of the trial?
I just can't believe that there isn't a better solution for this. Surely there is a utility or a workaround for those of us in tethering hell!!! GahhhH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Would this be feasible on a honeycomb device?

has anyone tried to tether with the EVO?
I saw a patch for another tablet somewhere to enable ad-hoc wifi. it was a zip for cwm, but most definitely it was built for earlier android version. i'll look for it nonetheless and report back.

What Verizon/Android phones have you tethered with a non-rooted Xoom Wifi?

I'm officially over my WinMo TP2. I am going to get a new Android phone through Verizon. Was looking at the Droid X, but open to suggestions.
1) What phones have you all been able to successfully tether to the Xoom Wifi WITHOUT it being rooted? Also, I do NOT plan on paying Verizon for their mobile broadband option. If that means I have to root the phone, I'm fine with that. Please let me know if that's the case.
2) What Android/Verizon phones do you recommend in general?
Thanks in advance for any feedback!
I am currently tethered to my Droid Incredible. Running Cyanogenmod 7. I know you were looking for solutions without root, but you also stated that you didn't want to pay Verizon for tethering. Not sure that you can do that without rooting. The native, built in tether with CM7 works great. Based on my personal experience, if I were in the market for a new VZW phone I would probably look at the Incredible 2.
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
The Xoom doesn't have support for ad-hoc tethering without being rooted. If you can find a phone that will tether wifi in infrastructure mode, the Xoom should work without issue.
I've got both my DroidX and Xoom rooted and I tether my Xoom to it without issue after installing the tethering mod for ad-hoc support.

I know you asked for vzw feedback but fwiw I've been tethering flawlessly with my evo.

I can do the same thing with my HTC Inspire from AT&T, granted my phone is rooted but it hooks up without a problem to my unrooted Xoom on the Hot spot!!!
Verizon is going to charge you every cent you're gonna tether to your xoom. So no tethering or hotspots unless you root it

[Q] Tethering with my transformer

I just got my transformer and was planning to tether with my droid eris, only I have come to realize that wifi tether is ad-hoc, and unsupported by the tablet, and bluetooth tether is not possible on my little old phone. what rooted handsets are you using to tether your transformer?
I am using a Captivate as a wifi hotspot (Mobile AP) and it works flawlessly. I use custom roms and have been allowing my wife to leach with her iPad (yuck I know) while we are on the road and such for a while. You don't have to use custom roms but it seems to me to be the best way to get the feature without ATT plan checking getting in the way.
I'm on Verizon, and I'm hoping for a phone that's easily rooted and flashed. I love me a good Rom.

Me too!
I'm in the same boat that you are. I have a rooted Droid Eris (XTRSense 5.01). It tethers easily to laptops via wifi or usb. It even tethers easily to iPads. Of course, it won't tether via wifi to my TF, or to any other Honeycomb tablet.
I have screwed around for several days trying to establish bluetooth tether. I can get the Eris and TF to pair, but not to connect. I haven't given up on this yet.
I am also trying to establish USB tether through the dock. The Eris and the TF connect okay, and the TF thinks that the Eris' SD card is a hard drive and lets me explore it. But so far, no tether. I'm still trying.
I use my htc evo and it works great. 4g speedm is nice.

use the wireless tether v3_0-pre14.apk on this website code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list it tethers my Samsung epic 4g fine with my unrooted transformer
I've been using wifi tether 2.0.7 I think. Works great on the phone for everything else..... Has anyone tried with the moto droid. I definitely applaud badger for trying the bluetooth route. I tried it with both kaos froyo and tazzfroyo and tazz ginger with no luck. I read somewhere that the droid bluetooth stack wasn't as well developed as the hero since it had such poor sales.

thanks.

forgot to mention, I'm tethering my bb playbook tablet, not a computer, so easy tether isn't a viable workaround.
if anyone sees a rom with this feature ( its in the atrix, and some other stock roms) please give me a heads up.

anyone? just check your rom to see if you have a bt tether option

Free App for WiFi Tethering NO ROOT NECESSARY

FoxFi https://market.android.com/details?id=com.foxfi
Allows wifi tethering from most Samsung phones and Motorola phones, LG Optimus/Vortex/Ally, ZTE N762, HuaWei Comet. WiFi mode does NOT work on any HTC phones or the first Motorola Droid/Triumph, use Bluetooth mode instead.
You can connect from any tablets or computers. Access Point is infrastructure mode with WPA2 security.
And it's FREE!
Came across this after having problems with Barnacle and Wireless Tether after upgrading to ICS.
I just downloaded and installed this on my LG Ally and it works great. The speed using the browser to surf the web is very good. I had started to use Verizon's hotspot and found out that it cost $20 a month I was sure glad that I found this app. Free is always better.

Note: this does not work with 4G, at least with the Motorola Photon

Glad this was posted. I have been using Foxfi for some time now and every update gets better and better. On my first bill I never recieved any overcharge so it is good. The only thing it does not do is allow you to kick off individual users who are connected. But you can easily change the password or shut it down to kick them off. I never used barnacle or the others but so far this has been my favorite.
I use it on my epic touch 4G. My TF101 has a bff for life.
