What are the best media playing apps, of any variety and quickly why? If there is not one that does this well, list individual ones for music and video.
I am compiling a list of the best apps of each category, so leave your opinion and a quick reason to help out the community.
If the app costs $, be sure to say so!

Best music player in my opinion is MIUI Music
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=854766
Very nice UI, downloads album artwork and song lyrics (with option to only download when connected to wifi)
Lyrics are highlighted in sync with the song.
The app is free.
For hardware video playback, mVideoplayer is great. Subtitle and automatic subtitle downloading, gesture support, loads of other features. Is free with ads, I think, but I have those blocked so I can't say for certain. For software video playback... Rockplayer, plays most files perfectly. Costs money though. There's also moboplayer which is free, it's in beta and kinda buggy though, but looks promising and plays most of my normally unsupported files well. Also it's not on the market.
As for music I like doubletwist, it's free and has a nice, clean GUI.
Vital Player
It's free, open almost all format, and is on the same level of Rock Player...
Bump!

I go between doubletwist, zimly, MIUI, and everything else. For videos I usually go with rockplayer, mvideoplayer, or the default music app.

can anyone recommend a good music player for the x10? Not a big fan of mediascape as it doesn't play many formats.
Try meridian player.. got a nice music control widget an all

Btunes. Looks like a copy of the iPhone music player, but it's actually very good with lots of settings.
but it doesnt support a wide range of formats, more specifically the aac format.
Is there something like the VLC player for android?
I like the look of bTunes, but it sometimes messes uop album art. Not showing correct artwork for the song!
I found realplayer to be able to support the widest range of formats including aac.
i still like Zimly
Does anyone know if any players support FLAC? So far I have tried meridian, AndLess, AMplayer isn't compatible (2.1 only). Has anyone tried FLAC on btunes? Its too bad theres no trial.
Is there any player that can display Lyrics that are embedded in MPe tags like iPhone does when u touch album art while listening to the track? It kinda displays very neatly on a transparent pop-up page which you can scroll. Of course, it should display that only when lyrics are embedded in the MP3 tag and not search for them online.

For videos, there's only RockPlayer - it's in beta.
You can get it from here:

I use MixZing ATM.
Try doubletwist player. You can find it on the market. Plays video as well.

MortPlayer, the best right now.
+1 Realplayer
I am using the Real Player Beta. Works best for me.

Meridian plays flac files.. but u have to add them manually, Play by folder doesn’t play the flacfiles.
so you don't have flac ID3tag and flac file in Music tab. It does not show AlbumArt when playing flacfiles.
andLess plays flac also andLess on AndroLib haven't tried it though.
If you can live without FLAC or wait til we can have it native as in CyanogenMod, MortPlayer AndroLib is relly good, my number one music player
I love the cube player '3' pretty hard to find in the market so search on 'Filipe Abrantes' he made the app. Its a beautiful app!

That player is indeed impressive visually. But it's lacking in functionality right now, but it's a beta so I'm sure it'll improve with time.
I use Astro Player Beta, very good, great sound and also has an EQ which makes a difference
As a follow up to this thread, let's determine the most popular music player.
Lithium the best
MediaScape not included in the list.
Thread moved to D&H Android General.
Sadly, I think the stock player is the best one yet. The volume rocker and trackball controls are a nice feature. Plus, it just looks nice having the album art as a black and white background while selecting a song.
I have tried several of the more popular players and found them to be fairly ugly and plain.
I remember reading somewhere that most media players dont even have their own audio support, they just use the default/built in audio engine of the regular player anyway...
Stock is working best and with the device controls for me right now.
Subsonic ..... It allows me to have all my music without trying to fit it on my phone

Streamfurious, as I don't really use local mp3s.
Stock music player is so primitive it cannot be the best. Maybe most popular if it's good enough for many people, but I think some other players in this poll are better.

There are many competing streaming music apps (btw Rdio opened to public today). Should make a separate poll for them.
MortPlayer
I've used MixZing, MusicMod, doubleTwist and Meridian
So the conclusion is ... inconclusive. The stock music player seems to be bad enough so that people are trying out other players, but there are no clear winner among non-stock players yet.
Default stock Sense music player is best to me.
I personally prefer RealPlayer. Currently it's in the Market in Beta stage. But it's incredibly clean looking, and easy to use. Plus, I don't have to put my music, video, or pictures in set locations on the SDCard. I can put everything where I want without loss of speed.
I like the stock player on my Captivate.. but for me it lacks lockscreen control and scrobbling. I have been trying other free ones that fit my needs, and may settle on 3 (cubed) for awhile.
(From my Captivate via XDA app)
Id personaly love to see winamp, been using it for years and think its great.
HTC Stock because I don't really listen to mp3s on the phone (ipod), Retro Radio for streams
The HTC music player doesn't DL album art automatically. Is there a better featured music player? And recommendations for a video player.
Thanks.

I'm a HUGE fan of MixZing. It has an Album Art option and is well worth the paid version. As for Videos, I have used RockPlayer in the past. It works well and has good codec support.

Does anybody still use the cubed music app? I loved it. It downloads the album artwork, too.

Just bought playerpro, its fantastic and replaced MusicMod for me. For videos i use RockPlayer since its simple and allows me to watch .AVIs without having to convert them to .mp4 files first.

I love Meridian Media Player. there is a free and paid version. It plays all of my videos and music, let's you create playlists, downloads album art, shows lyrics if embedded, and works flawlessly.
Just downloaded Music Player and the beta of Winamp, but it seems neither of those read our internal storage so they are worthless to me.

FYI - the new powerAMP trial can see internal storage right out of the gates! Good work, developers!
We are the VPlayer team, and developing a new music player.
Some plans:
Kinds of music format support;
Music video support;
Basic music player operations;
Unique control style;
Support for the disabled;
...
So, what do you want for a music player? Any comment is appreciated
Support not just video, but music as well, so I don't have to have a couple of apps instead of one.
Definetly want to see an equilazer for music, and contrast/brightness settings for video.
Better file browser (smaller icons/labels, more info on files, sorting, bookmarks)
Playlist support.
Any pics of the interface?

Yes, but the UI has not been completely finished. Please wait for my updating posts. Thanks
1.SPPEDUP without changing pitch, slide with regulation from slow to for example 400% faster.
2.Option for removing silence for example when someone is slowly talker spaces between are long and this is really boring to listen such audio book or smth.
So it would be nice if player would have option to delete silence with regulation like delete when voice db is lower than 3db and delete silence when silence is longer than 200ms etc.
It would be good to listening audiobook.
This player could just prebuffer some music into memory scan it for silence in separate thread and delete it but this is technical so you know it.

flac/ogg support! homescreen/lockscreen widget!
Why ?
Once the finished works for sale
The user on XDA are your guinea pig
HD Video support for all the formats...!!
At least make sure it supports 720p videos..!!
Good UI, some widget and a lockscreen. Not much, but essential.
Music listing by folder!
Just like what Mortplayer does.
link to twitter
can u add up a link to twitter so we can tell ppl what we r listening to?
that would b great. thanks for this brilliant idea
Good looking UI and good looking widgets (multiple widgets even better).
EQ.
Smoothness.
Shake to switch songs?
Gestures
See Audiogalaxy ... copy its streaming abilities from my PC to my phone. But also add support for photos and videos streaming if possible.
Make sure to include a gesture based lock screen widget, exactly like Mixzing has. What is great about their lock screen widget is that it reactivates the screen for a few seconds when a new song starts. That gives you an oprotunity to quickly see what is playing, and swipe to skip to next song if you desire. Great function for when you are driving!
Include an easy to use Playlist creator.
Keep the user interface simple and minimalistic looking. No need for fancy graphics. Simple goes a long way. Make sure the Now Playing section shows the album art as big as you can. We take a lot of time tagging our music with artwork, so we want to see it.
Seriously, see Mixzing's app. They have almost the perfect music player. The only thing it lacks now is streaming abilities. I would like to use it to stream my media from my PC, like I do with Audiogalaxy. I use Audiogalaxy exclusivly now; even though it lacks a lot of the fuctions I really want from Mixzing. Streaming has become that important to me for my media players. Screw the Cloud, give me access to MY pc.
-professional-looking widget (lockscreen and homescreen)
-ID3 Tag Editor (something unlike PowerAMP where you edit tags of music files and becomes unplayable on other music player)
-prominent album art display in now playing screen (but not too big)
-Headphone support
-beautiful UI
screen lock
i have one more thing if some one hasnt already said. SORRY FOR NOT READING THE WHOLE FORUM. can u gyz get the system to lock the screen with a tap on trackball so videos wont keep on skipping while we have our phones in our pocket..plz
sorry for my bad english, i hope u understand what i mean. cheers
I try different stream players from the Android Market but no one works fine. I have 2 players with streams TuneIn Radio, that's a good one with lots en lots of streams all over the world. It's a pitty that you can't add streams. I have also WunderRadio where it's possible to add the stream URL.
But I'm looking for one player not with streams, only a player what plays the stream wher you click on a website with streams like tuned.mobi.com or something and where you can add stream URL's. There are lots of it on the Android Market but lots of don't work. When I click on a stream, it download the .pls file or something and put in my downloadhistory and when I click on it it opens in the standard player but can't play it. I'm looking for a player to play in all stream formats like mp3, WMA, AAC+, .pls, MMS:// etc. There was a good player on Windows Mobile, the TCPMP player. I like an alternative of that player. I hope someone can help me.
I think Tunein radio
X2 tune in is the biz

Yes, I use Tunin Radio but I'm looking for only a player what play streams in many stream formats (mp3, wma (windows media files), .pls extensions, aac+, etc. etc.) and where you can add streams to your favorites.
I like streamfurious. Pro is expensive, probably not worth it with how the dev is (Not lazy, but not communicative either, doesn't update too often).
But once installed, it should all you to load a url in the app. If it does not work, the url in the browser should. (I have a custom m3u playlist, it loads from the browser, and streamfurious takes it from that point, adding it to its list).
I might not sound very positive about it, but I really do love the app.
Try XiiaLive Light in the market.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using Tapatalk
If you're on android 2.2+ Winamp has built in shoutcast which streams many radio stations. The stations are also listed in genres which is handy. Winamp also plays music on your phone better than the stock app.
XiiaLive is the best in my opinion.
Winamp is nice, but it has a few bugs in it, and I couldn't get it to automatically resume playing after calls, or on a dropped connection/buffer.
Xiilive and Winamp I try them both but no player works fine for me. I don't want a player with lots of standard stream but only a player, nothing more, nothing less. Winamp have lots of bugs and can't stream the channels in the shoutcast directory and also not Window Media Player. Also the option with clickable links in the browser are not working. I'm looking for a player what can play windows media streaming formats like asx, wma mms:// etc. and who have a the posibility for clickable streams on websites in the browser.
Motorala music player ist good for streaiming radio
I'm having pretty good luck with bsplayer, for both audio and video streams. bsplayer even seems to be able to seek direct mp3 streams, which most other players seem to either not be able to do, or do not do correctly. requires byte-range server support, of course.

I second this. The recommendation of xiialive was so "understated", though, that I almost didn't take it seriously... after trying every other app that anyone suggested, and having them ALL fail completely. Well, JustPlaylists was able to play some pls files (never m3u, though). These posts (this complaint) are so old, though, that I lost hope that any app could manage this BASIC functionality. Even the n7player (full trial version) was a complete fail. Xiialive works fantastically well, though. Plays all pls and m3u files, whether local or on a webpage. Plus, the rest of the app is very well done, as well. I love the alarm feature , which allows you to schedule a "program change". You can make this recur on any selected day(s), as well. I set it so that it automatically starts playing Mind Over Matters at 9am (EST) on Sat and Sun, then switches to KPFA at noon. The list of "built-in" stations is extensive (there are 2 different "repositories", which I don't fully understand, but the advanced one contained all the stations I wanted (WORT, KEXP, Free Radio Santa Cruz, etc.). Reorganization of stations from the original categorization offered was also simple and intuitive... as is the whole app. I have no connection with this app except as a happy user who was SO glad to find someone, apparently, who can code... not just use the limited android media functions.
