I am going to post this in both forums. I think it will be an interesting read for each. haha
I'm on sprint. My Premier account is up and I can get a phone upgrade. I currently have a Hero and was going to get an EVO on Monday.
Because of the pro-rated ETF fees from Sprint, I can cancel my account for $120.
I watched several reviews for the My Touch 4g and was really impressed with the phone. The quadrant scores were cool to see. I realize that isn't the be all/end all but from the couple days of research I did on the phone, I am liking what I'm seeing.
I've read up on the EVO for several weeks now. I'm familiar with the phone and realize the amount of user support it has. I am 'pro root' so I would be looking for the root option in the future.
Price wise, T-Mobile and Sprint with WI-Max would be about the same cost to me each month.
With choosing to stay with Sprint I'd lose the Premier account status. I would have to sit with the MT4G for 2 years or buy out of pocket.
I'd be buying an 'older' phone but one that has a great user community. I'd probably be happy with the Evo until my next Premier renew date.
I'd have the Wi-Max network to use.
I'd have a better screen? I don't know yet as I haven't tried the MT4G at a store.
With choosing to go with T-Mobile I'd be getting a newer phone for the same price as I would pay for the Evo (ETF of $120 and I've seen the MT4G for sale for $80). Next gen processor.
I'd be losing screen real estate and the look and feel of the Evo which I've come to like.
I'd be losing the xda community support or the amount. I am sure the MT4G community will grow.
I'd be committed to T-Mobile for 2 years. I wouldn't be able to upgrade after 12 months.
***Coverage-wise, it's a tossup. I live in Minneapolis and have Wi-Max and from what I see on T-Mobile, HSPA+ is here too. A concern of mine is that when we travel back home (to eastern wisconsin) the coverage for T-Mobile is extinct. the website shows it using a different carrier. Sprint back home is 3g.
Not sure what I want to do. My friend who has an Evo looked at the MT4g and said he wouldn't switch based on looks. He hadn't investigated the phone in depth. Guess looks are important but I'm thinking a few other things that should weigh into the equation.
I'd be interested to hear your thoughts. I'll probably get fanboys from each forum but I'm sure there will be enough objective info to glean.

As you can see from my sig, I've had a decent amount of phones over the last couple years, and I can honestly say that the MT4G is my favorite of them thus far. Yes, even over the favored Nexus One. If the MT4G had "fastboot oem unlock" it would be perfect lol.
The big differences between the EVO and the MT4G is obviously the size and the newer hardware in the latter phone. Software can be swapped out at will, so if you don't like the mySense UI, give it some time and you can have your regular Sense or something like CM6. Hardware, on the other hand, can't be adjusted so if you pick the EVO you will always have the older Snapdragon and less memory. The screens on both of the phones are identical(as far as hardware is concerned), I believe, aside from the obvious size difference. The argument still rages whether or not the MT4G has SLCD or regular LCD(like the EVO). According to some reviewers, it's one. According to others, it's another. So, as far as hardware specs go, the question you need to ask is this: Do you want a bigger screen, but older internals? Or do you want a smaller screen(in comparison), but the latest and greatest?
On the topic of WiMAX: There was an article I read the other day saying that Clearwire, the provider of Sprint's 4G network, is cutting 15% of it's workforce to save money. This doesn't necessarily mean the company is in trouble, and most people speculate it's just Clear cutting costs to plan for the future. Your mileage may vary, but most reviews I have read have the HSPA+ of T-Mobile providing faster speeds than the WiMAX of Sprint.
On the topic of Community: Don't let the fact that the MT4G has a small community right now fool you. The phone hasn't even been out for a month, and we just achieved root the other day. When I moved from my G1 to the Motorola Droid, I was pretty unhappy with the tiny community that was supporting it and that was one of the (many) reasons I moved to the Nexus One as soon I was able. Now, the community is thriving. The same thing will happen here as more developers start getting this phone.

I've never had it and I don't like having to pay more a month for a phone that has it. My friend says that Minneapolis Wi-Max is about 8-8.9mb down. I don't expect that to be the same for me (I live about 15 miles away from where he works).
The cost of the plan with Wi-Max is the same as the cost of the HSPA+. Do I pay the extra money for Sprint or T-Mobile. Sprint's been good to me but it's not like they've been the most successful mobile communications company the last several years.

My recommendation to you is to stick with GSM carriers. They're much easier to work with. If you end up not liking the phone, and decide to sell it (or trade it), it's as simple as taking your SIM card out and putting the new buyer's in. When I sold my Droid, both me and my customer spent half a day on the phone with Verizon trying to convince them to let her activate it. They kept trying to tell us they couldn't release the phone from my now inactive account until the billing cycle was done, which was two weeks after I sold the phone.
I'd invite your friend over for a beer and borrow his EVO and see what kind of speeds you get out where you live. Speaking of, if for some reason, you actually don't have WiMAX where you live/work, you end up still paying the extra money for it regardless.
If you're worried about getting stuck with a phone you may not like for two years, why not buy it off contract? Yes, the upfront cost is higher but typically you end up spending less over a two year period than you would on contract. For instance, T-Mobile's "prepaid" packages are around $20 less than the postpaid. If you really end up not liking the service or the phone, throw it up on CraigsList or something similiar and try the other.
HSPA+, and T-mobile coverage in general, is a hit or miss in Minneapolis while Sprint is not too bad as far as I know. I mean, you will always have your voice connection but may be dropping to Edge quite often for data.
My suggestion: Start a new account with T-mobile, pick up MT4G with a different number and try it out for 2 weeks. If you like it - port your number to T-mobile. If you don't - return the phone and you won't loose much money.

Speaking as someone who broke his Sprint contract and sold his Evo (actually two of them) to switch to T-Mobile for the MT4G, I couldn't be happier.
That being said, the main driver for my decision was that Sprint still doesn't have WiMax in Indianapolis, and T-Mobile does have HSPA+. Sprint's 3G varies wildly here, and the places I was the most (work/home) had the worst signal/data speeds. Another thing about Sprint is it broadcasts on the 1800mhz channel which is known to have a problem penetrating walls.
I did love just about everything on the Evo. It's dev community is AMAZING. No Wimax or HDMI out on CM6 did suck though. And the gpu on the first gen snapdragon left a lot to be desired (like 27-29 fps on neocore).
Another thing to remember about Sprint is there is no data cap, whereas T-Mo has a 5GB softcap after which they limit you to a snail's pace.
I am very happy about my MT4G. The biggest differences for me are the improvement in network speeds (significant for me) and the increase of the gpu (the MT4G gets a 57-58 on neocore). Battery life is much better too.
I will say if I had WiMax in Indianapolis I would probably still be a happy Evo owner on Sprint, but they dropped the ball on that one.
Another point that might help, I recently read that after 3mpbs any increase in speed doesn't have a noticeable difference on webbrowsing unless you are downloading large files (maybe HD movies). What does matter is the pingback.

My father and brother both have the evo. Myself and a couple of co-workers(by my request) all have mt4g's. The mytouch is far superior. Sure, you're not getting a huge screen, but it seems to be the perfect mix of size and portability(read: pocketability), and there's no hdmi output(which I would never use), but come on....WIFI CALLING! How can you top that? You get service anywhere you can connect to a wifi access point. And that's on top of being super fast with the latest cpu offering from qualcomm. Everything about it is fantastic, even more so now that it's been rooted. I've been faithful to t-mobile for 8 years, and it's paid off. Their value can't be beat, and their devices just keep getting better. Did I mention the wifi calling?

My mom has the ego and now I have the my touch 4G so I have used both quite a bit.* If you are stuck on screen size, get the evo, though I think it is too big and that the mytouch or vibrant are perfect screen size wise.* But in my opinion screen size is the only plus of the evo.* The mytouch looks better physically imo.* Plus the mytouch version of sense does everything the evo version does plus more, and it looks nicer van that just bar at the bottom of the original sense.* So I would go with the mt4g.* Plus Sprint has terrible customer service and tmo is great.

I think I've worded myself wrong. Speeds are fine, the coverage is spotty.
My drive to work is less then 15 min (Hopkins to Bloomington/Richfield area) and I like to stream music on the go. My connection drops 2-3 times in that period every day. Every summer we go to Goose island on Minnetonka Lake. AT&T streams music fine there, all I get is Edge.
I could list many more examples but you get the idea. You have nothing to worry about though, you have 14 days to get back to Sprint in case you're not satisfied, I'm stuck with T-mobile for a long haul (4 lines, started service in 2001) since no other carrier can even touch what I pay now.

All you need to do is download aLogcat from the marketplace, set it to periodically save to your SD card(under Menu > Settings on the app), and let it run! Once you get your update, you can remove your app and send me the log in PM. It doesn't record any private information such as contest of text messages or emails or passwords so don't worry about that; rather it logs the background processes that runs the phone.
I know on my first device, I was caught up in the excitement of rooting and the idea of "Ah someone else will get it." On my new one, I've been running it since last Wednesday but haven't received my update yet. Once we have the link, everyone will be able to manually update if they have to change devices or don't feel like waiting for the OTA.

Currently I'm on AT&T with the Captivate but we are going to have to switch off Ma Bell due to coverage issues at our house (we are going cell-only). My decision to get the Captivate earlier was easy: I had to stay with AT&T and it easily the best phone they had. And I actually like the phone now that I've gotten a Froyo build and the GPS works. But now that we are out of contract I'm unsure where to go and what phone to get (or to wait).
I know that T-Mobile and Verizon get the best coverage at our house and those are the two carriers I'm considering. As far as Android phones are concerned, if I'm coming from the Captivate, which phone do you think I would be most satisfied with? Droid 2? G2? MyTouch 4G?
Or should I wait for this Nexus S to come out? Having quick updates is huge and as a former iPhone owner, its nice to not have the carriers put their grubby mitts on them.

nexus one, droid 2 or vibrant if you like the galaxy s series, but thats my opinion
T-Mobile has WiFi calling as well and that's a great asset to have. If you're 100% positive that T-Mobile has the coverage you need you should go with them and get a G2 or myTouch 4G.. the DEFY is nice but it's more mid-range. I would wait for FroYo before getting the Vibrant. Then you have Windows Phone 7 if you're looking at one of those.
See if T-Mobile is offering "4G" speeds in your area. If they are, you might want to grab the myTouch 4G or the G2. The G2 looks awesome IMO.
BTW, I used the GPS on a G2 and it was flawless

I vote for waiting on the Nexus S and at least see what it's about. If you get a phone and discover the Nexus S is a much better phone, you'll be kicking yourself for the next two years.

Get a Microcell
If it is just a coverage issue, get an AT&T Microcell. No contract required, just uses your existing minutes and internet connection. I have one at work due to zero signal...works like a champ!

call ATT and politely tell them that you plan on leaving because the coverage inside your house is not up to par. when they send you to retention services, tell them that you'd stay if the coverage was better IN YOUR HOUSE and most likely they'll offer you a microcell for free

T-Mobile ---> G2 or HD7 depending on your stance on WP7

I like this option to start, I never thought of complaining to AT&T as a first step. Since I have other options, whats the worst that could happen, right? That broadband pipe is going to get some serious traffic . . .
For the other phone, I was thinking Droid X or G2. I love the design of the Cappy and in my opinion, the myTouch 4G and the Vibrant/Fascinate seem to be a step down. Most likely it will be the Droid X or waiting until the Nexus S "issue" is resolved. I'm a little skeptical of the G2 hinge after seeing it in store.
If you go with t mobile you can use your captivate until you figure out what phone you want. (if you unlock it)

that's what I thought. Same as using an iPhone on T-mobile. It'll work but you'll just be stuck on Edge like speeds.

So I was wondering if anyone knew if this phone was going to be able to be unlocked because I really want to get it as soon as it comes out and use it on T-mobile. T-mobile phones suck and I've fallen in love with the Inspire 4g.
It will only work on edge on tmobile but I'm sure there will be a way to unlock it soon after release.

Really? T-mobile has the G2. That thing is sweet. They also have the MT4G, which is a mean CM7 machine.
I think both of those are as good as the Inspire, if not better for my purposes. But hey, the Inspire/DHD/Ace/Spade is a solid device that will surely be a winner.

The G2 is ok but all my friends have it so I want something different. Plus I like the 4.3 inch screen, I'm tired of this little screen on the MT3G, time for me to finally upgrade.
Okay so i just left Sprint for Verizon to get the thunderbolt and was royally pissed off lol, but now i'm not. Okay, so i been on the fence contemplating going back to Sprint and decided not to. When i had my EVO (which i still do waiting to sell it), the support it got was amazing, but my 3g on it was sub-par. I live in New York, and i was seriously getting horrid connection. I even thought about all the graphic power the new one is getting, but then i said to myself "half the games in the market don't even use all that power", so isn't it redundant to desire such a powerful phone with so many games work fine on the thunderbolt? I mean, i sound like i'm trying to justify my switch, but just thinking out loud for anyone who feels the same as me. And what up with all the hate on the thunderbolt by Evo users? I thought the Android community was suppose to be together, some of them sound like whining Apple fanbois.
That's how it happens. It's called "latest technology". I argued with my girlfriends mom for about an hour.....

I am not jealous of the new EVO. The reason is two. First I have a moto xoom, so I have a powerful device with a screen big enough to enjoy the power. Second, like you said, is that Sprint is crap. I would have said the opposite a week ago, but I would have been in denial .
The EVO was better than the iPhone 2g/3g/3gs' and Sprint was better than AT&T that I had had for the 3 years prior. As such I was happy with the phone, which was somewhat crippled by the sprint network. The biggest thing I hated about Sprint, was they were INCONSISTENT. Didn't matter if it was peak or off-peak hours everytime I grabbed the phone I had no way of knowing if it would give me an efficient or inefficient experience. In the car I used a Wilson Sleek signal booster which made things like streaming over Pandora or Slacker consistent, but it's a cradle so its not idea for much more than that.
The thunderbird thus far has proven to be a better phone than the old EVO, but more importantly it seems to have hardware that works well on the network. Anyone with an EVO even in a strong 4G area can attest to the 30+ seconds it takes to get a 4G connection, and how it never seemed to come back if the connection in the area was less than idea. The one time so far that my EVO went to 3G, it went back to 4G almost immediately. I live in North Las Vegas, but my part of town has not been the Boonies for 20 years.
In summation. Even if Sprint "does it again" and releases a super friggin awesome phone, as the EVO was, it wont make up for their less than ideal network. Sprint is not bad per se, they just aren't great.

Well of course i know that, just bummed as soon as i jumped ship they release this haha. The obvious, of course, is that we will get something similar also, but just wanted to speak my mind for those who feel like me. I focused more on the specs in the original post, but i was also curious why almost every website i got on about the thunderbolt you have some uptight mad Evo user bashing it, quite comical and sad at the same time.
@setite the 4g on sprint was horrid, especially indoors.
I too left Sprint (of 5 plus years) for the TB... I am jealous of the Sprint's new EVO, but not their 2.5 GHz WIMAX.. If hey get their 800MHz frequency up and running with LTE or even move WIMAX there or maybe even WIMAX 2, then I shall return

This makes the verizon thunderbolt look like a STEP CHILD… Verizon wanted to have a hand me down product they got it. Everyone knows htc doesn’t do business with Verizon never and they got exactly what they wanted last year’s evo but the funny part is our current 10month old htc evo 4g is still better there isn’t even a toggle 4g switch on there device it just keeps runing and too top it off there bootloader is locked another verizon trick. verizon needs to get away from samsung i love my fascinate but samsung is sooooo bad with customer service since officially we are still on 2.1 but thanks to the devs i have froyo

I doubt it was anywhere as fast as AndIRC did it, first night=root, second night=unlock bootloader/custom recovery

Nice hardware is useless when the service is useless. I've been a Sprint customer forever but lately their 3G is useless and 4G coverage is spotty and slower than when it was first rolled out. The HTC Thunderbolt hardware is no comparison to Samsung Epic 4G, mainly AMOLED screen/CPU/GPU performance, but the superior LTE connectivity makes the hardware inferiority a small compromise.

I will never go back to Sprint ever after they treated me terribly when I complained about getting 1x speeds in the city of Chicago outdoors in an area marked "best indoor 4g coverage" on their map. With Verizon I get 4g anywhere indoors and don't have to stick my head and arm way out the window to get decent data speeds. And on Sprint the decent data speeds are literally 400kbps. see thread "data speeds, wtf?" in the Evo general forum.

I'm about ready to make the jump. I love my EVO but the data is very spotty, sometimes decent 5-6MB DL but quite often less than 1/2 meg. I live in a 4G city too.
Price is getting closer too. I have 3 smart devices...

Longtime GSM user, both AT&T and T-Mobile. I have a terminal aversion to CDMA but LTE looks intriguing. I use, roughly, between 13-20GB per month. Voice usage is almost nonexistent. I do text frequently.
I've been eyeballing a fellow coworkers Thunderbolt. (I'm also enititled to a 20% discount through work.) My questions:
Are you guys happy with your Thunderbolts? Like the screen? Does the LTE SIM work like GSM, just find another LTE phone pop and go? (I phone hop like mad!) LTE coverage in Ohio is actually pretty good. Your ETF is $350? (Once the AT&T&T mereger is done 12-16 months down the road I may switch back. Any general thoughts to add?

I was a longtime ATT user (and Cingular before that, THOSE were the days) before switching for the TBolt. I enjoy the screen, better than my old Blackberry and since I mainly use texting/email on it instead of video, I actually prefer the screen to a SAMOLED. In theory, LTE SIM switching should work, but there hasn't been another LTE VZW device to test that with (another week and we'll know). And yes, ETF is $350 now, just like ATT.
Out of curiosity, why would you switch back soon down the road? ATT's (even if they acquire T-Mobile) "4G" technology is so far behind LTE that it's laughable. That's why I switched, ATT spent too long dawdling around not really improving their network infrastructure, at least where I live.
I use about 120 to 80 Gb monthly now that this is my only net connection. The best thing about it is the price monthly. I'm paying for a data only plan which is 50 a month unlimited before my 25 percent discount. For texting I use Google voice app and I have GV forwarded to a sipgate #, running SIPdroid on the tbolt to get my calls. Result is unlimited calls text and internet tethering for 37 bucks a month. Ya the phone ain't cheap upfront but it really is like having a cable modem in your pocket. I love it

I just got the T-bolt and I am impressed. Although I have not tasted any 4G yet, it is a very solid phone. The battery life is not great, but that is to be expected of such a device. Getting a bigger battery seems to be the only option. I love the screen and cannot wait to watch movies on it! Waiting for a netflix app

The LTE SIM does not work like GSM just yet. Verizon has it on a white list. They have to approve the device it will be in. They say that they are adding approved devices all the time but not sure which devices have been added. I think they are pushing more for the LTE SIM to be taken out of your phone and you put it in a camcorder, DSLR camera and make the devices shoot live feeds. I had read this on howard forums. I would love for HTC have it where you could custom build your phone and just pop in the LTE sim card. Just think pick your own screen, ram, internal memory, speaker, etc.

I remember hating verizon for crippling the bluetooth on my v710? swearing never to go back. I've been GSM since cingular dropped tdma and I switched my 3360 and got a 6620. Then winmo starting with an htc wizard up until an HD2 that I converted to android. Wife has gone from thinking I'm nuts to giving up on my smartphone crack habit. Been mostly cingular/AT&T with a few bad romances with Tmo where I think "this time the reception will be better" (last time cause I really wanted the HD2). Then I walk out of the lumber yard and get 4 voicemails all saying generally wtf are you??
Then along comes the thunderbolt. I'm currently carrying an tmo HD2 running android and cause it's better than my fuze... a hacked beyond belief iphone on att. A friend hands me his verizon phone and I walk through my 7 story concrete/glass office building with the verizon, at&t, and tmo phone all showing signal strength. Tmo fades early as expected. There's a few times where verizon gets beat but most of the time it's got a 5 db advantage.
So a saleslady at the verizon store loans her thunderbolt and I try it in a fringe area (my house). Coverage is better with the thunderbolt and while at&t speedtests better and seems to load faster initially, verizon never hiccups and pauses like at&t and loads every single webpage before at&t completes.
So then the pro's cons.
I have 7 gsm phones all unlocked that I can bring up either att or tmo on but my att contract is up and my tmo is just a $5/mo family line that I just use text on.
unlimited data. I dont have 4g here but it's a chance to grandfather in on unlimited high speed data. Previous calls to at&t complaining about having 4 iphone non-tech unlimited users on my plan where I'm the geek yet I'm the only one without unlim data fall on deaf ears. I may not use the 5 gig I've got but it's a pain having to worry.
Verizon? Really? After laughing at people who were forced to use get it now to get their pictures off their phone? After swearing never to return when they crippled the firmware on the v710? And CDMA?
But the lure of unlimited data gets me to try a thunderbolt. I get in on a 1 year contract and I too get a healthy discount.
Fast forward 3 weeks. Rooted & flashed a non vzw rom after 4 days. 14 day return day came in went without a thought. The iphone is in my desk and the tmo hd2 will probably get turned into a winmo phone when I get time just to see if it's more than an xbox facebook extension. I find there are many times I havent even bothered to turn on wifi since web pages load without pauses, hiccups or waiting. Was going to hold out for a dual core but I've got no complaints. The screen colors seem much more vibrant than my hd2. I got the extended battery but even with not being able to put the phone down be it texting or internet I still last all day on the regular battery. Besides, by now I've got a usb charger about every 5 feet at home.
very tough call and it took a lot to get past going back to verizon and cdma but I'm glad I did. Sorry if I stepped on any toes windows phone, iphone, tmo fanboys, and grammar nazi's. Just MHO. Got a microcell to help not drop calls and still do on att. Verizon goes without extra help and doesnt drop calls. Texts are quick but break at 160chars. I use the phone to monitor several production unix machines so quick sms was imperative.

Well this is my first smartphone so I don't have any comparison. But I love it. Love the screen and it's 4.3" of manlyness. I really never understood why people have such animosity for CDMA vs GSM. Yes I get the whole SIM card thing, but is that the only reason?
For me, it was the problem of no data while on a call. Never again AT&T, never again.

Just curious, but what do you have against CDMA other than you cant port to other carriers as easy as GSM? I found CDMA voice is generally better than GSM. The ThunderBolt still uses voice for CDMA so other than it being fast for data over what is considered GSM, it's still pretty much a CDMA phone in the sense it's locked to verizon (probably more so since you cant take it to other CMDA carriers either).
ATT will be going to LTE sometime next year as well though, so eventually when phones are using LTE for voice and data, you would be able to switch between carriers (assuming they both support the same frequency of LTE, there's 2 of them) and different phones on the same carrier
I love my tbolt. I went from a D1 to the TB, and was a little scared of leaving all the great ROMs, kernels and support on my D1 (was running CM7 nightlies with the deprimed kernel on droidforums and that thing ran more amazing than it ever did) but made the jump to get in on 4G before a rumored switch to tiered plans. And I couldn't be happier, I do miss CM and prime's kernels, but the devs have been putting out some great things on the TB. Adrynalyne and thatdudebutch have an amazing ROM with das BAMF 1.5 remix and I'm running imoseyon's lean xtreme kernel. And since development is young on this phone, I can only see it getting better
I wish I could recomend this phone over my Droid x but the battery life is so pitiful in comparison. Don't get me wrong I love the thunderbolt and having 4g is nice (Seattle) but having to be tethered to the wall on charger almost constantly is just annoying. My Droid x would go all day and had better outdoor visibility. The auto brightness on the tbolt is wack. The new blur on gingerbread also puts sense to shame. Onevgreat thing about the tbolt is the camera is really good and very fast. While the Droid x takes great shots it slow to snap them.
In short I'd recomend the Droid x over the thunderbolt.
My upgrade is in 4 days, and im thinking of the thunderbolt, i have no 4g in my area, they say by the holidays maybe.
That being said i love my incredible but want a bigger screen, is this work upgrading or should i wait until the next 4g phones come out. I only want an HTC phone.

I have heard that AT&T will *not* use the same bands as Verizon. Here is an article stating something less general, but indicative of this discrepancy:

Personally, I think it's worth it. The thing's fast, smooth, and powerful (insert joke here). It works well on 3g, and when 4g comes to you (or you travel to a 4g market), you will DEFINITELY not regret it!
I would consider waiting on galaxy 2. That thing looks like a complete beast.

Get the extended battery my phone now lasts 30+ hours when my Droid X would be luck to last 15 even with liberty installed.

The dev community here is freaking awesome. They've been busting ass to get stuff working, tweaked, and corrected. Great group of guys.
Alrighty then, anybody have the extended battery, how does it feel, i love mine on my incredible.
Well, my Incredible is up on Craigslist, if i sell it ill be on the thunderbolt!
