General Question

I have a general question about the AT&T apps that I uninstalled via Titanium Backup. I used Titanium Backup to first backup and then uninstall all the AT&T bloatware apps. I thought the purpose of backing them up first was so they could be reinstalled at some point. But now I find out that the backups made by titanium backup are basically worthless since I uninstalled the original apps. Now I have to try and find the apk files for all those apps if I want to reinstall them.
Is all this correct? Or is there some way to reinstall from the backup files that were saved. If not, what would be the purpose of backing them up first?

On a "normal" android device, Titanium Backup works perfectly to backup your apps and system data. But on a locked down AT&T device its only really good for removing apps after you root the phone. There is a fix that lets you install 3rd party apps but I'm not sure if that includes factory apps (my guess would be no). On a regular Android phone you can download files in your phones browser and use a program like Astro file manager to find them and install them from your SD card. So we are basically waiting for custom roms and hacks to give us the most basic Android functionality. Not cool.

Yes, I know about the AT&T lock down, and I have done the settings.db mod to get non market apps to install.
I guess my question was more about titanium backup. On several threads in here about removing AT&T bloatware using titanium they always said "make sure you back them up before uninstalling them." So I did back them up. I was thinking that the backup was so after we uninstall them, we could later re-install them if we changed our minds. But this is not the case. If you back them up, then use titanium backup to uninstall them, the backups are worthless. The only way to reinstall them is to find the apk file and then reinstall them that way.
So whats the use of backing them up before uninstalling them? And where can we find the apk's for reinstalling them if we need to return our phone for servicing? All of this should have been discussed before offering directions on how to get the bloatware off. I'm pretty new to android so I had no clue that once gone you can't get those apps back. Thats all I was saying; wondering if that is correct.

I dont know what the current guides say, I got my captivate on the 18th and there were several threads then about how to use Ti-backup to remove bloatware.
Its not the end of the world, the full one-click odin flash back to stock is available.
I was just rooting around inside the .tar.gz files that titanium backup creates last night. Discovered that there's no apk file hidden in there. Got me wondering whats the sense in backing up before uninstalling since now those backups are good for nothing. When I go into Ti-backup now and go to restore, the att apps are gone completely from the list.

I think people were just saying to do a backup because thats what they were used to doing on other devices. It may be able to restore everything once a custom Captivate rom comes out. You could try asking all the guys that flashed the i-9000 roms if they had any luck with it. I used it to delete wallpapers and such that were stock on my nexus one and it saved them....but my Nexus didn't have any bloatware to delete and restore so....

Yea, I've downloaded the Odin 1-click factory restore thing and got it saved on my computer just in case.
I'm ready for some custom ROMs, I've thought about trying putting that I-9000 ROM on my phone, but it seems like a lot of work for little or no gain. I've got my phone rooted, did the settings.db mod, uninstalled all the att bloatware, got launcher pro on it; so it runs pretty well. I dont really see a need to put the I-9000 2.1 rom on it, with how much trouble it is to get on. Now if it was 2.2 or if it fixed the crappy GPS I'd jump all over it.

If you do a backup & then uninstall, it's not gone from the list. You can find them at the bottom of the list.
From what OP is saying im guessing TB isn't letting people restore from a backup?

I'm the type who waits for something to be tested and proven before I'll try it lol. My phone runs well enough and I'm not willing to risk crashing my daily driver. I think the headaches just aren't worth it. But I am grateful to all the other guys in these forums dealing with those headaches so they can try new things and learn more about our phones. Eventually they'll get it....and I'll read a forum post about a total noob (even worst than me) installing a rom or fix effortlessly on the first try...and I'll jump right on it lol. I'm not going near the i-9000 stuff for now...no proven gains and so far every version has lost functionality somewhere along the line....but it makes for good reading

You're right, the uninstalled programs still show up at the bottom of the list, but if you click on it, the options are Backup, Freeze, Uninstall (dont know why, because its already been uninstalled). There is no restore or re-install.
That was my point, Ti-backup lets you uninstall an app, but it wont reinstall it from a backup that you make using it.

I backed up all the crapware just as advised. But now I cant reinstall them using TB. Please devs help us what happened to our TB crapware backups. I need them to update the phone. That seems the only way the jh7 would install

It seems to me that there are a lot of bugs in the Captivate, even with the new GPS Update available. I have held off buying the Captivate (I want it alot!).
So I watch these and other boards to see when AT&T comes out with a Captivate that actually works to most everyone's satisfaction. (I am struggling to keep my Tilt ! alive for a little longer.)
Keep up the great work you first adopters. Its valuable to guys like me who are second adopters!

Questions from a NOOOOB

I have a bunch of questions, but here is where I'm at.
I had 2.2 stock OTA. I then used bootstrapper to place dr154's Deodex OTA 2.2 onto my phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794007
Next, I again used bootstrapper to put NexTheme on my phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=749692
Question 1: Are both the deodex OTA and NexTheme now on my phone, or did NexTheme replace the deodex OTA? If I were to load another Theme on, would all 3 coexist or would the other(s) be replaced?
Question 2: If I were to factory reset my phone, what would it revert to? Stock? dr154's deodex? Etc.
Question 3: If vzw released a system update, do I have to do anything to my phone before I receive it?
Now more questions regarding SYSTEM APPS.
Problem 1: MotoTorch was preloaded as a system app, as a part of either Deodex or NexTheme, assuming these coexist. When a new version came out in the market, I could not update to it, because it was a system app. Superuser, same thing, a newer version came out, couldnt get it, "installation unsuccessful".
Problem 2: Additionally, lots of the system apps aren't even recognized as installed by the market. So sometimes you won't even know if an update is available. This was the case with MotoTorch.
So I used the common solution that everyone uses and that I found with a little searching, I loaded adb and mounted /system/app as rw, then removed the apks. Then reinstalled them from the market. Then remounted /system/app as ro.
My question regarding system apps is this:
Question 4: What is the advantage of having an app be a system app?
Question 5: The stock system apps such as Amazon Mp3, or City ID - can I safely remove these? Which ones CANNOT be removed? When I did ls /system/app, there were a huge number.
Lastly, I am new, so I'm sorry if I missed it or could have search it or whatever, but I'm wondering....
Question 6: What is tranquility exactly? I see a lot of themes say they're based of tranquility? If I wanted it, where could i find the newest version? If I install a theme based off tranquility, and then a new version of tranquility comes out, can I reinstall tranquility on my phone, then reinstall the theme and will then the theme be using the newest tranquility?
Question 7: What are the advantages of being blur-less?
Question 8: Is xda the best place to find new themes? Or is there another more centralized site?

just about everyone of your questions are answered somewhere on the web, but ill give it a shot anyways.
1. Themes only replace certain apks, (this is usually stated in the themers OP) so at times you are most likely going to have a merge of themes, sometimes you will notice it sometimes you wont.
for example, you load a new rom which has apks 1-20. Now you load a theme that has apks 1-6. next you decide to load theme 2 that has apks 1-4. then you load theme 3 with apks 1-2. so even though your main theme is is theme 3, you still have parts of 1 and 2.
2. I would avoid a factory reset, just keep a backup and a copy of the rom your on. And if need be boot to recovery and restore one of those.
3. Yes you would need to revert back to bone stock, best done with an sbf. Google it, that subject is beaten to death.
your using the term system app wrong.
1-2. if the apps were loaded and pushed to system/app they usually wont update. the apks should be in data/app.
when you did the mount/uninstall/install this loaded the apk to the proper data/app location.
4. again wrong terminology. consider system app an app that is either neccesary for phone to run or an apk that MUST be in system/app
5. google "remove droid x bloatware"
6. would take way to long to fully explain that. newest can be found on rom manager or TBH.
7. personal preference, plus less &%$# running in the background.
8. no centralized site, you can find different stuff on different sites. mydroidworld, droid-life, droidforums, droidxforums, etc.

the theme gave me mototorch to /system not /data

Here's the BIG question. Did you make your own nandroid back-up before you started this whole process? In other words- did you go into bootstrap recovery and create a back up of your phone first? and then do all this other stuff? Bc that is the easiest and number one way to return your phone to its factory settings. In fact- at this point it may be the only way. With 2.1 we had an SBF file which was essentially the original "rom image" (i come from windows mobile so forgive me). So if you were tinkering around or flashing roms and something happened - you could restore using the SBF to the factory state.
On 2.2 there is no complete SBF. Team Black Hat released a partial SBF they are calling a "system SBF" that can help people that have fubared their phone installing themes and what not. But i don't think it returns the phone to factory settings- I could be wrong since I am a complete newb to android.
So to make a long story even longer- that is why I asked if your remembered to make your own nandroid back up of your phone b4 you did all this stuff- so you have a way to return your phone to its original factory state. If you did not- then don't let it bother you. I have read many posts from seasoned android users that simply got excited and forgot to do it. Eventually - the SBF has to be leaked and we all can sleep a little easier.

I guess if an OTA comes out, and we still don't have an SBF, I'll just have to wait for a customized version of that OTA to be released.

Yes- this is confirmed lagitamate. So you are good to go. You can now restore to factory by downloading this sbf and using RSDlite (RSDLight? - can't remember).
So- didn't have to wait to long

best backup apps

can someone recommended me an app that can backup all of my apps, bookmark etc thing in my xoom? so that i will easily put them back after rooted or flashed my device. its quite annoying to reinstall them 1 by 1 zz

Titanium Backup. I've only been using it for a day, but everybody I've ever heard who has it says it's wonderfully amazing, and it seems to work pretty well from what I can tell. Root required. If you're looking for something without root, then you won't find much.

I'll second that... its the best i've seen/used

I bought titanium because of all the good reviews....but....out of the 30 or so apps I have installed, it seems to only backup a few...like 8 or so. I kept wondering if I was missing something simple, but when doing batch backup it always list a small portion of the apps I have installed.

I've been using it since it first came out.
No problem backing up and restoring 200+ apps on my Nexus One.
Plus it will do settings, sms messages, and bookmarks.

Update. Since I updated to 3.1 and rooted again, seems all 150 or so items are being backed up....yay!

I found this thread while trying to figure out if there is any way to backup BEFORE rooting.
I have a stock 3g Xoom with 3.1 I would like to root it, but my understanding is that it will be wiped, and then I will have to reinstall everything and reconfigure everything, as I now have it, and like it.
So, my question, and I think the question of the original poster, is whether there is a way to backup before rooting? Or is there a way to not loose everything I have now, when I root.
I have used Titanium Backup on my rooted Evo, and it is a great app. But, as was stated, it will only work once the device is rooted.

I want to try other ROMs. Is there a way to install a different ROM without having to re-install all of my third party apps all over again?

I like the Hyperdrive ROM but I would like to add and remove some of the features I installed when I loaded the ROM initially.
Is there a way to change my configuration without having to start from the beginning and having to re-install 3rd party apps?
3)
Apparently this ROM has a battery calibrator built in that I can run in terminal.
Can anyone tell me what it actually does
4)
What is BusyBox and why do I need it?

1. Basically no, the fastest and easiest way to get your apps back is using titanium backup. It's even recommended to not even restore with tb if you switch from touchwiz and AOSP or vise versa.
2. Hyperdrive uses aroma and this is true for any rom running aroma, but to change your features you simply have to reflash the rom. Then while you're in aroma, simply deselect all the features you don't want anymore, but if you forget to mark something you already had it'll go away.
3. Can't help you with this one, try searching the development thread.
4. Busybox is basically a terminal (if you can call it that?) that runs with Linux. It basically gives your phone the ability to run a vast majority of basic commands that would otherwise have to be manually entered into a terminal. It's a stripped down version of a full Linux kit, so it's designed for more stripped down environments such as mobile and tablet devices.

So, do you mean to say that I can back-up and restore only my apps when I either change roms or re-install the current rom?
But if I switch from a TW rom to an AOSP rom then restoring those apps via TB is NOT reccommended?
-- I mean I can back-up and restore all kinds of things, but I can b/u the apps by themselves?

I think titanium is great for backing up apps, and yes, if I'm switching between touchwiz roms or the same rom I'll use titanium to restore user apps with data. But if I went to an AOSP rom I'd only restore the app itself mainly because of the different android versions, most apps such as games should run normally, but restoring data will sometimes cause issues with a rom. You'd have to do a lot of battery stats hunting to get rid of some of them. If you didn't restore data, your system would be pretty clean, and new data would be written for the apps you use as you use them instead of restoring them from a different version.
I would never in any case restore system data, unless I'm reinstalling a clean flash of the same exact rom and build I was on.

If you dirty flash without a factory reset your data will stay intact even after a reflash.
Stuff that's included in system data are contacts, text messages, call logs, etc. I usually never restore that stuff, and just let Google restore my contacts from the cloud.
It generally isn't a good idea, but it shouldn't be a problem going into the same rom. It's up to you whether to do it or not.

you can restore apps coming from AOSP to TW or vice versa. Ive never had a problem anyway when i used to flip flop back and forth.
I always select user apps and not system apps though.
You can use sms backup and call log backup to restore messages and call logs. theyre great apps.

Hi -this is actually in response to a comment on another thread, but I wanted to be sure to reach you and figured if I commented on a thread you initiated you'd get a notification. I just got the S5 mini and it's driving me nuts - I primarily use it to listen to music and it skips/stops the song if I so much as breathe. I cant use it for jogging or even listening while walking, which means it's useless to me. Did you ever find a solution to the sensitivity factor - screen protector, case, etc.........? I may just return it. Even if I twist my hand the tiniest amount it happens, and it doesn't just skip - it turns the song or even the page off completely. I literally haven't been able to listen to one single song all the way through since I got it - even when it is laying down flat. Help!

i never did figure it out. i didn't try a screen protector either, i just hate them.
i just end up being annoyed at the thing.
I hang-up on people with my cheek, i inadvertently open or close apps. i am constantly opening the recent app menu (though i finally found a way to re=map that damn key)... so basically i'm stil unhappy, but i have a year till my contract expires so i'm living with it.
as an aside I somehow changed a setting, disabled my wi-fi, then lost root and can't seem to re-root or enable the wi-fi

[Q] Maximise storage space

Hey guys, i am interested in maximising my HTC One Mini 601s storage space and have seen this but i am unsure if i would be able to use it on my phone, or how to for that matter.

Straight out of the box the storage is 5.2GB / 16.00GB used and id love to remove the bloatware apps but for some reason using titanium backup with root access wont get rid of them (they just appear again after reset)
Im pretty novice in the ways of android at the moment so i dont want to go deleting files using root explorer and brick my phone.
I thought about putting on the magio rom, but i hear it can potentially be unstable or mysteriously drain battery life.
I guess what i am asking is, what is the best way to bring my phone right back to stock android, remove bloat and maximise space?

I'm using Magio R3 and haven't had any battery issues. For me the best version of android for our phones, though I only used stock for a couple of weeks before rooting. I'm able to use the JMZ kernel which has some nice touches, and I don't suffer any wierd bugs. Though with this version a few paid apps are blocked from play store. But easy enough to grab else where and send them a cheque in the post. Magio has some apps removed but not all that can be. I'm still testing which can be removed and which can't.
Anyways.. Only had a glance at this rom cleaner but it might just be for Samsung phones. You wanna search for a HTC one. Personally I don't like these system app removal scripts. They always take something you use and leave stuff you don't. Plus they can still brick your phone if not specifically designed for your phone.
Personally I make a nandroid backup and use Titanium Backup to remove system apps. If you find an app your unsure about Google it, there are a lot of descriptions for all the htc apps on Google.

I don't think i am ready to replace a kernel, but installing the Magio rom could be on the cards later.
I have two questions though
1) Can i completely 'format' my internal storage before i put on the rom, or will that just brick the phone
2) Any idea why Rooted Titanium Backup cant uninstall bloatware (they just re-appear upon reset)

When you are i recovery ready to flash your new ROM, if you want to COMPLETELY loose all your user data, then you wipe a factory reset, then FORMAT data, it will ask you to type "yes" to make sure you actually want to do this....
You can't get rid of the system apps as the system is write-protected - this can be made read/write by either s-off (advanced) or flashing a custom rom (Magio) with the custom kernel built-in.

Okay so turning S-OFF, I can only assume doing so will also practically roll out a red carpet to hacks and viruses, and that unrevoked forever app seems to make it easy to turn it off, but instructions are vague at turning it back on.
Just out of curiosity, is there a wiki for general android hacking and terminology?
And i will try your custom romcleaner file, it sounds promising since you recommended it to someone with a HTC One Mini

Perhaps later, its 11PM and im on painkillers for an ear infection so its not the prime time to be messing with my phone
Is there anything wrong with using moonshine/rumrunners/unrevoked
they seem fairly straight forward methods

I'm not keen on that method - the binary involved, revone, is 400kb, rumrunners download is 25MB.... Personally I'm not keen on "wizards" doing things you can't control.... Plus, you never learn if everything is automated... Hehe! Either way, feel free to give me a shout if you want advice or help.... Take it easy....

although i did get an "error code 2" after inputting "./revone -P" , i just carried on with the reboot then the next command "./revone -s 0 -u"and another reboot and it still worked successfully
