[Q] WM6 standard to wm6 Professional - General Questions and Answers

Hi Everyone,
A few days ago I bought a Palm Treo 500 on eBay which arrived yesterday. I assumed it would be just like my very worn out XDA Orbit, just with a keyboard and no touchscreen. It seems I was very much mistaken. The Palm runs WM6 Standard and I am stunned at all the missing features compared to the professional version.
Some current annoyances are:
Outlook wont let me specify more than one email account at the same domain. It says name already used.
I can't customise the home screen and or start menu.
Cannot edit repeating entry pattern in outlook
Cannot create word and excel docs
and on and on and on....
I always liked my Windows Mobile but I had only ever used the Pro version.
So, my question is:
What can I do about my Treo? Can I upgrade it to the Pro version. I know I can buy extra software to address some of my issues (docs to go, pocket informant etc) but spending on extra apps seems daft when I could have just bought something like an XDA mini with the pro OS in ROM.
Thanks for your help
Richard

Someone with the same device needs to dump his rom take out the drivers,
insert them into a WM 6.1 rom at best, create an image and upload it here.
Your Treo seems to be the only model without touchscreen.
I could not find a anything about your device on this site, yet.

Thank you for your reply. It looks like I will have to either accept the shortcomings and buy add-on software or stick it back on ebay and look for something different.
Cheers
Richard

How to make Pocket PC 2003 input software work on WM 5? (Celluon Laserkey)

I'm pissed. I ordered the Celluon Laserkey CL800BT as a mobile keyboard. But it appears it still has not had drivers/installation software created for WM 5. Nowhere on the seller's website did it mention this very critical piece of information. The Celluon website utterly fails to even mention the existence of WM 5 as something they either support or don't support, it's like they're stuck in 2003.
So, the question is... Is it possible to get this thing working on WM 5? I'm not sure if the input panel changes from 2003 to 5 are so big that the drivers supplied won't work or if it might be possible to just fiddle with the registry keys enough to get it to use the 2003 drivers. I figured out that certain registry structure changes were made in how the input software gets listed and so I tried to "upgrade" the entry for the Laserkey and that got the "Projection Keyboard" appearing in the list, but when I select it it just switches to the built-in WM keyboard input.
So, please, all you super clever people, help!!!
Quincy
Wow, that's a neat product. Thing is there is no difference in software keyboards between WM 5 and 2003 but what you have is a hardware keyboard that connects via BT.
If the drivers don't work it means they don't support your devices hardware or BT stack.
Unfortunately short of writing new drivers i do not see a solution to this.
I assume you tried installing it using the WM 2003 setup?
If it doesn't work i think you should ask for your money back.
Thanks, yeah, I tried the install for PPC 2003 and that completes, but as I mentioned the "Projection Keyboard" option in the SIP list does NOT appear. So I figured how what registry tweaking would make it appear but selecting it doesn't work. I changed the registry to point to the DLL I presumed should be called (there were only 2 that came with it, and I tried both) but nothing. I assume the SIP hooks into the DLL/etc. have changed from 2003 to 5.
It is an amazing product, if only it worked. Celluon must be in bad shape or something for them not to have current drivers (I contacted their tech support and have not heard back yet...). There are few things more annoying than having in your hands something that is amazingly cool and having absolutely no ability to use it.
I talked to the seller and it looks like they'll take it back, but I'm stunned they wouldn't have a big warning or at least a little warning/mention of the fact that it won't work on the current PPC OS.
So, warning to all, don't buy the Celluon Laserkey if you've got WM 5!
Quincy
One thing I just thought of, probably should have mentioned it before (this is really stupid of me):
Maybe the DLL you are messing with is not a SIP DLL at all? This is a hardware keyboard and it should work no matter what software keyboard is selected.
So try to do a clean installation (so your registry tweaks won't get in the way) and just open Word for example and type.
Also maybe it needs parring or some special BT settings?
Good suggestion, Levenum. I don't know exactly it is supposed to work, but I do know that you use the SIP selector to choose the "Projection Keyboard" and then it takes input from the keyboard. So, I'm pretty sure it really does act as a SIP. I've tried re-installing a few times, along the lines you suggest, having cleared everything out but still no luck.
I guess I'll wait another couple days and ship it back. I've written several times to Celluon but have yet to hear anything.
Quincy
Hmm, if they have written it this way (its possible of course) it would be a very stupid approach.
I had a chance to use a couple of hardware keyboards and they usually work separately from the SIP system be it BT or IR keyboard.
Strange that company creating a product primarily for mobile devices seems to know so little about them.
I too have the same problem with my IPAQ hx2490b running WM5.
I have found this web site which hosts a Celluon Laserkey driver for WM5 which installs OK without any registry changes.
The problem is that when the Projection Keyboard is seleted from the Input list and from the keyboard icon, I get a message to say BTM Cannot get current state. If I exit from the driver screen, I then get an error to say that the serial port is in use by another device which should be stopped before trying to use the Projection Keyboard again.
I have removed all of my other BT pairings, done a hard reset and started from scratch to no avail.
The CL800BT pairs OK until I load the driver. If anyone has any ideas for a workaround or has had success in getting this keyboard to work under WM5 I would be grateful for your advice.
I have emailed Celluon but have had no reply. The UK distributor has been trying to sort this for me for a week with no success.

Dear all,
there is a WM5-driver on the plawa page aviable -
and it's working as well on WM6 (testet with Hermes)!
okay, that's not a surprise - but the german shortcuts
are working as well!
can I have a link to the plawa page you refer to? I want to use it on wm6 too.
thanks

What's so great about WM6?

Hi,
While I am waiting for my MDA Pro to arrive, I have been reading a lot in the Universal section (have a BA myself).
May I ask for some valid reasons why someone would want to use homebrewed WM6 releases instead of official/customized WM5?
I do understand the fun it is to try out new things, but is it really worth it? I did not find many posts that would clear this question.
Thanks,
vma
WM6.0...
The new look and a lot faster device...
Is there any feature that won't be available with WM6, that did work fine in WM5?
Thanks,
vma
Video call isn't working yet.

The way I see it, WM6 may or may not work for you and may or may not do it for you. Try it. You can always go back to WM5. Most people don't.....
Well .... the simple answer is that I did a lot of searching and reading, and finally tried it out for myself.
I asked this very question a while ago right here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1130569&postcount=88
And came to the follwowing conclusion:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1155497&postcount=89
In the conclusion, the thing about the Bluetooth Stack / Voice Command - it was actually Voice Command that was the problem and this issue was fixed in Jrwightmcps' 2.02.00 WWE http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=297256
Crossbow ONLY!
Tell you the truth... i see the new WM6 is better eye-catching GUI not to mention the enhancement in the functionality and other usability such as email related functions. I know that MS wont just upgrade for no obvious reason nor for desktop OS compatibility.
Yet i reckon i wont -never- go back to magento! Crossbow ONLY!
@nvatvani:
Indeed your posts where the only ones I read, that contained some usefull info about the subject.
No offense to all the other members of course!
I was simply wondering about what to do when my MDA Pro arrives: replace the German firmware with a WWE WM5 one or go straight ahead to WM6 without even looking at WM5.
Also, I had some problems with my Blue Angel, when I tried WM5 on it: it may have been a coincidence, but one day after the upgrade the screen went mad and totally messed up. Only 1 Hardreset in about 100 tries would bring it back to normal for some period of time and even reflashing it with WM5 or 2003SE would not make it work normal again. The screen would get messed up suddenly for no particular reason. At the end I had to send it in for repair, which was actually a good thing, as I complained about the loose stylo and bad working hardkeys, all within warranty. I got a new key-pcb, backside and they reflashed the device with 2003SE. I posted this issue in the BA forum, but got no usefull hint. This means I am a little scared of upgrading to unofficial releases.
Other than that, I have no problems with flashing, as I do that on my other hobby (satellite receivers) frequently, including JTAG-operations for repairing bricked devices. The same applies to games consoles. (Note: I do not sell or benefit commercially from that activity and my goal is not to get illegal software or TV - not that you guy's get the wrong idea about me).
Anyway, thanks for your replies!
Cheers,
vma
What Windows Mobile 5.0 AKU 2.0 has and Windows Mobile 6 (the cooked ones, having tried them all) doesn't have, according to my experiences:
1. Videocalling - at least not a proper one
2. Bluetooth Dial Up Networking (the DUN profile)
3. Wireless Modem (yet some WM6 ROM's have it, although without shortcut in the start menu)
4. Cyberon Voice Dial by default (some WM6 ROM's have it by default, others will need a 500kB CAB to activate it)
The reason why I went back to "good old" WM5 is mainly the reliability. Ok, the OS may be a bit slower here and there, but it has all the functionality (e.g. videocalls and Bluetooth DUN), and NEVER hangs. It just always works and that's what I desperately need right now.
---
The things Windows Mobile 6 has for me that 5.0 hasn't which I miss the most:
1. High resolution browsing in the normal Internet Explorer (I don't want to use alternatives)
2. HTML email support
3. The impressive speed of the OS
Applications like WM6's Windows Live and the superb Remote Desktop Client are also available for WM5, so I don't need to miss those, otherwise I sure would, and then I might have sticked with WM6.
The new sounds and GUI are great, but I don't really miss them, since that's not a true functional thing.
Having WM5 up and running again, without freezes and memory leaking and with full HTC Universal functionality, is enough for me to be happy with it and to stick with it. If there ever will be a ROM that actually ADDS Windows Mobile 6 on top of all of this (without a single registry tweak or CAB fix needed), then it's the time for me to upgrade again.
If such a ROM will ever see the daylight, since it won't be officially available for the Universal, I don't know. I think the HTC X7500 (Athena) will be there sooner (April 2007 over here), and that one will have a official WM6 upgrade for sure. That'll be my next one, so until then: WM5 for my Universal!
So far for my opinion.
why do I use WM6

To be honest, I used them all and later delteted them after 5 2 hours. They leak a lot, ram is at minimum and useless third party applications, and a lot fo thing sodn't really work or missing (I just want a vanill aone without 3rd party applications).
Except for one rom, Darkforce, it is fast and furious, and so far I have using it for two days; battery usage is good, and no leaks. However, no video calling, and no way to set com ports for bluetooth devices. any1 has this problem?
However, common to all ROMS, no video calling, old calculator, speed dial messed up (some work and some don't), wireless connection bubble missing (yes you can install a cab but I don't want to do that).
<Mind you, contrary to other reports, I never had any freezes with any rom.
The thing that attracts me is HTML in email, High resolution mode in explorer, better remote desktop connectivity.
So I thhink I am sticking with DarkForce ROM, so far so good.
Thx

Questions about HTC Cruise

I recently switched from using the ATT Tilt to the Cruise (mainly because it's smaller/lighter to carry around) It's mainly working ok, but I have a few questions:
1) Does anyone know of a decent handwriting recognition software out there I could use? On the TILT i got used to the "block-recognizer," as the lesser of evils, but i would LOVE to find software that can use the whole screen. I use these devices a lot, so after a while that lower left corner becomes all scratched up (even using a screen protector) , and then you have to pay about $200 for a new screen, since the characters no long respond well to Block Recognizer. I"ve tried the "Transcriber" that comes with Windows Mobile 6, and it seems awful, as do the several other programs i found online, such as Pen Writer and Caligrapher, i think they're called? Back when i used Palm/Treo devices, i really loved the Teal Script program, but it doesn't seem to work for W Mobile? Anyone know of anything that could work??
2) Some things worked better on the Tilt, i guess becuase of the ATT software? For example, on Tilt you can use the word completion software in the Calendar mode, but on the Cruise it doesn't come up. And the word completion software "remembers" two-word or longer phrases in the ATT Tilt software, but not in the Cruise. Is there any work-around to be able to do this on the Cruise too??
3) Is it worth trying to upgrade to 6.1 on the Cruise, through some kind of cooked ROM, or better to wait until HTC finally (hopefully) releases the 6.1 ware??
Thanks much!!
Daniel
1. sounds like transcriber

Sorry, but Transcriber is already on the device, and it seem terrible to use?!! Isn't there ANYTHING out there that works ok??
Thx much!

Linux OS for Touchphone

Hello, I was wondering if there was a Linux-based OS I could install on my phone (like Android, except that I hear that Android doesn't support a lot of phones yet). I am quite disappointed with the interface Windows Mobile 6 gives me and it isn't very touch friendly, and doesn't provide simple (and quick) ways to access things.
I am mainly looking for one with a much more usable interface and a decent set of applications (that either comes with it or is available with it).
Any further information on this would be appreciated.
Edit: any general information on any hacks/programs I can install to improve the general UI of the whole phone would also be appreciated. I've also heard about Windows Mobile 7 - when will it come out, and will it be a free upgrade?
I reckon WM 7 will be released in 2010, so that'll take a while.
WM 6.5 seems to be more finger friendly (the bigger start menu, etc. NO personal experience with it different from seeing today-screen and start menu on a flashed hermes), but just running M2D/TF3D on a WM 6 device already improves it by a lot.
Also, which OS you can install is limited to your device, it might be useful to mention which one you have.
Ok, My phone is a Dopod 383 Pro. It has many names sometimes it's called a HTC something, an I-Mate something and so on, but I call it a Dopod 383 Pro.
How do I get WM 6.5 on it?
What about M2D or TF3D, what are they?

You can get WM 6.5 (BETA) on it by flashing your ROM. I'm not experienced with this, so for more information about flashing you should check out the stickied posts.
M2D (Manila 2D or TouchFLO2D) and TF3D (TouchFlo3D) are today-screen plugins by HTC, which give a bar with tabs at the bottom of your homescreen. Here's a youtube video to give you an idea:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjMAUprcFqc&feature=related
The difference between M2D and TF2D is the name, and the difference between those and TF3D is that TF3D has some more fancy animations and such, but requires more of your devices CPU power making it a bit slower.
I believe you have to flash your ROM for this aswell, with a ROM that has 1 of them built in, but I'm not entirely sure.
One thing - Before flashing, Read all information about it you can find. If you fail, things can turn nasty.
Hope that helps

Yes you can install 6.1 or even 6.5 and maybe linux, just do a search on your correspondent subsection here:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Hermes
For example, if you enter on Universal section you can see linux for Uni, and there are also for other devices
Good luck,
Rather than looking for a new OS, why not change how it looks via WAD2, SPB Shell etc?

[Q] how to Get Back to WM 6.5 ?

Hi Everybody !
you all know how strange it might be some requests form your boss but this is the most strange one !
My Boss has a system that work on WM 6.5 only and doesn't work on WM 7 and he requested that I should Provide him with 40 New WM 6.5 devices !
you know that they are not available currently So I figured out that I should buy new WM 7 Devices and Flash it Back to WM 6.5 !
I think theoretically this is possible but have anyone tried it ?!!!
I want to Try it on HTC 7 pro Device , Could anyone tell me what the steps I need to do that ?
any other suggested Devices ? I only want it to be New ,with QWERTY keypad and I can install WM 6.5 on it !
Thank you all in Advance.
Sorry, but you can't go back to something you never had!
WM is very, very, very, very different to WP. In fact they share just about nothing.
There is currently no way of putting WM6.5 on a WM7 device, which you'd have known if you'd spent roughly 70 seconds doing a search of the forum.
Unless it's something very specific, there's probably a way to do whatever needs doing on WP7, but unfortunately if your boss is insistent on non-standard software WP7 isn't going to work for you I'm afraid, the best thing you can do is try and find a bunch of WM6.5 devices.

I think I will try to gather some WM 6.5 Devices
Thank you for your support.
A lot of the enterprise (read: work related) features that were standard in WM6.x were left out of WP7. I only discovered that after setting up Exchange Server 2010 with my WM6.5 phone and was not able to duplicate the same tasks on WP7.
