[Q] Help with 4g connection (HTC Evo 4g) - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

I moved to a new apt about a month ago and have a great 4g signal (sprint is my carrier). For the first three weeks the 4g worked great. Now I will be connected to the 4g signal and streaming a video, playing a game, or doing school work and the connection will just cut out. I will still be connected to the 4g signal and have full bars but have no data connection. I connect to the internet with pdanet or wireless tether (I have tried to use my phone's browser as well when this happens and it also does not have data so I know this is not a pdanet or wireless tether issue). I can turn off the 4g and reconnect with 3g service. I will then turn on 4g again and it will take a good 5 to 10 min before it will reconnect and the process starts over again. I generally can get between 5 and 30 min of connection with 4g before it flakes out.
I could not find this issue on these forums anywhere and have enjoyed reading threads on here, but cannot find this issue posted anywhere so far.
What I have done so far:
1.Restore
2.Reset (installed Azrael's rom with Netarchy's kernel in place of stock sense with unrevoked I had before)
3.Updated prl
4.Updated profile
5.Changed the Wimax sleep mode setting from 10 seconds to 300 seconds. I have not had a chance to test this but do not see this helping considering when it cuts out I am generally in the middle of something so there would be no chance for the connection to time out.
6.Contacted Sprint multiple times and been transfered around and got a confirmation number on a ticket for them to check the 4g signal (still a possibility it is on their end, just want to make sure its nothing on my end)
Are there any other settings or things I can try on my end to verify that it is either on my end or sprints end? I really would like to get this working, it is my primary source of internet and I need it for online classes. I have rooted my phone and do have my msl number so if there are any tweaks I can do with these please let me know.
On a final note thank you to everyone who contributes to these forums. This is one of my first posts here but I have been a regular reader since I got my Evo. I am a huge fan of all the work that the devs and posters put into this site. This is a great resource and I am very grateful for any responses that anyone can provide for me.
P.S. I hope this is the right forum for this topic, if it is not please let me know and I will move it asap!

I apologize for posting in the wrong forum. I have moved to the Evo page. Any dev please delete this post. The new post is at
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11108597#post11108597
Again sorry about this, I am brand new to the site.

From the posts that have read 4g problems almost always are Kernel related... Especially Bfs kernels.
Have you tried any other kernel and duplicated the failure?
Net's 4.3.2 cfs kernels work great with my 004 hardware EVO running MikFroYo 4.4 (IMO the absolute best Rom choice for your EVO)

[Q] Mobile Hotspot disconnects after 4-8 min; tried root solutions too

Can't get Mobile Hotspot to run > 5-10 minutes tops, whether I run the stock config from VZN with Mobile Hotspot enabled (incl packet data and roaming enabled) or if I run the aftermarket apps / ROMs listed below. 4G LTE in Portland with 5 bars and 20 Mbps down / 6 up on Speedtest.net app on phone. Similar speed when connected on Hotspot to Laptop. Current system info today (after doing the info listed below last night) is:
Firmware version 2.3.4
Baseband version
i510.06 V.EE4
SCH-1510.EE1
Kernel version
2.6.35.7-EP1Q-CL397514
Build number
SCH-I510.EP1Q
Calls to VZN tech several times about the Hotspot dropping signal; no luck. Sent me replacement phone, which (big surprise) did same thing. Level 2 tech said my next step was to "umm, you didn't hear this from me, but check xda developers and a process called rooting." Confidence inspiring as that was, let's just say I was willing to give it one last shot since I love the phone's screen, size, batt life. Shutting off WPA2 helped extend the time a bit, sometimes to 12 minutes, but that's as good as it got. After drop (laptop shows Wireless Connection Unavailable when searching),
Tried tethering apps (PDAnet, EasyTether) too while still stock. Same issue, but at least it lasted longer. Combined with aforementioned longer time btwn dropping when WPA2 is disabled, I'm thinking it's a software issue at this point.
Tried rooting, with CWM, PBJ kernel & Froyo EE4 debloated. First root experience for me; super careful. Great instructions, no problem going through the process. When I pulled down OpenGarden and Barnacle, they said they didn't have root access though.
Fine, let's step a little further away from stock. Flashed up the GummyCharged 1.9 EE4 Froyo. Nice interface, this time OpenGarden and Barnacle work HOWEVER (here's where maybe someone can tell me how to fix)
Both OG and Barnacle show up only as ad hoc, not full WLAN icons on my laptops (Win7 Latitude, and Win 7 XPS Studio 13), and it cannot connect to the internet with them. Are there settings I need to tweak to get either app to work?
I then tried the $4.99 WiFi Hotspot app. That one looks very much like the stock VZN Mobile Hotspot app, and showed up as a regular WLAN like VZN's Mobile Hotspot does. Worked about 20 minutes, then dropped.
OK, another step down the rabbit hole with Gingerbread this time. GummyCharged GBE 1.9RC2 Beautiful interface. $4.99 WiFi Hotspot no workie at all. Tried OpenGarden and Barnacle as well - still get that stupid ad hoc network thing.
Someone please let me know where I'm missing a step on any of these apps. I love the phone, big fan of GummyCharged Gingerbread look/feel, but frustrated beyond belief that I can't get simple mobile hotspot (or even tethering, which I enjoyed 2 yrs of blissfully slow 3G on my old iPhone 3GS before it was stolen from my truck / forcing me to re-evaluate my carrier & hardware options at that time).
Thanks again - ideas welcomed. Really want to try to make this work on this phone instead of turning it in for a T-Bolt (which VZN tier 2 tech suggested if rooting didn't resolve).
Welcome ANY ideas here. While I love the GB GC setup / speed / batt life, I'm open to going back to Froyo GC if you think that would help. VZN's also willing to let me turn in my Charge for a T-Bolt which they say has fewer tether/hotspot issues (albeit bad batt life).
Flashed a new radio yesterday - still drops Web after 2-10 min. Drops ping too, just f-ing useless as a hotspot or tether. New config is
Firmware version 2.3.4
Baseband version
i510.06 V.EP1
Unknown
Kernel version
2.6.35.7-EP1Q-CL397514
Build number
SCH-I510.EP1Q
Very, very disheartened. Dig everything else about the Charge, but I need tethering or hotspot as part of my job.
Bueller? Bueller? Buellllllller?
OK, for those of you who are suffering the same issues, here's a stopgap fix, hopefully VZN or some stud developer here will drop a wireless hotspot / tether solution that works on this phone. Maybe the issue is that VZN's Portland LTE is a POS implementation that bumps everyone off after 10 min of tethering. I bought the darn service to stay stock and would have used it - IF it worked.
PDANet seems to be the only real working solution if you want to stay tethered more than 10 minutes. You'll want to do the first level of Tether Hiding for more stability. And no proxies, using Chrome browser. That stayed running for 45 minutes. Woo. hoo. Still though, it's better than nothing. Once browser stalls at 45 min, you simply turn off PDANnet on the phone, go into airplane mode, turn airplane mode off, bring up 4G again, then turn on PDANet again.
Download speed was 6Mbps and upload around 1-2 Mbps, so it's kind of an improvement over the iPhone I came from (1 down, .5 up, but would tether or hotspot for days without a drop).
This is using the GB GummyCharge setup mentioned in the original post, with the modem flash mentioned in post 2.
After rooting and trying GB GC, I really didn't want to go back to stock. I haven't even done the lagfix - still using the stock file system. Phone is more stable than stock, faster responsiveness, much faster boot, far superior interface, phenomenal improvement in battery life. I used to drop to 20% battery if I got up at 5 AM and didn't get a charge by 10 PM, minimal 4G usage or navigation, just a few phone calls. Now with GB GC, it's 40% at bedtime.
That said, if anyone finds a cure for this crappy tether/hotspot solution which seems to be with VZN in Portland area on Droid Charge, please follow up with a post here or somewhere in the forum.
its not just your area man i am a truck driver and have had this problem in multiple places both 4g and 3g.

Working TMOUS WiFi Calling?

Anyone have any idea what the issue is or when the crashing after every call and general instability will be fixed? SMS works beautifully but calling is spotty at best, even from ROMa like ARHD that claim to have working WiFi calling.
I fugure we will have to wait until an ICS TMOUS phone is released or the sensation is updated to ICSvon TMOUS.
I made a thread about this a few weeks ago and never got an answer. basically it's tmobile and the app itself that needs to be fixed, and there isn't a single ICS rom that it works on, I don't care what the rom chef says. For me I just turn it off immediately when I flash a new rom as it has never once worked for me during a call.
You have to wait until T-Mobile releases their ics update for the sensation.
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using Tapatalk
I could be wrong but I have a feeling that the problem is caused by one of two reasons. One being that the app it self is really not fully compatible with ICS yet. Or, and I feel this is the more likely the reason, the kernel has been changed for ICS causing the WiFi calling app to not be able to function properly, meaning the kernel has to be reworked. I feel like this and maybe a couple of other kernel issues is why TMOUS has not started pushing out the OTA yet.
I am running arhd and wifi calling works like a charm. So its hit or miss.

+1, arhd, and my WiFi calling works. I rarely use it though .

I am on ARHD as well with no joy. I mean, occasionally I can get a call out on my Bluetooth, and my phone always rings, but usually won't go any further... multiple WiFi access points tested at various places. SMS and MMS are flawless, so I have been tolerating it.
In any case, I find it hard to believe it is working 100% for anyone yet.
Question for those who say it is working... after you end a call does the WiFi calling icon disappear for 20 seconds or so, then come back? Or after making a call the second one will hang with a green icon, then disappear and reappear again? If so, those are signs that the application is crashing and being restarted.
And if those aren't happening and WiFi calling is truly working, please post what WiFi router and internet provider you are using...
WiFi calling has multiple ways of getting out to the internet, some of which are kind of clever... to the point where it will work on most Aruba WiFi systems that use a captive portal...
At the college I work at, the Aruba technician doing an upgrade on our devices had to spend a good 30 minutes figuring out how it was bypassing the captive portal so he could block it.
Good luck finding somebody who will answer you with this, I tried in my own thread and never got a satisfactory answer. There are a few people as you see in this thread who claim it works great but I've never seen anybody explain exactly what their specific setup is. I'd like to know if it has anything to do with the router and/or type of wifi network you are on, the rom, the kernel....so many different variables. I'm like you, I just don't see how it could work 100% for somebody if so many others do NOT have working wifi calling.

Because annoying things like that happen. Gps is funky for me on all cyanogen builds, but works perfectly for everyone else, for example. Only works once per boot up. Freaky...but im the only one.
The fact is the updated version of the apk isnt out yet for wifi calling. So you have to be patient. Those of us who have it working might just be lucky. It happens.

Works for text and mms
Calls fail and app drops out for me
in us running ptd local ISP and a linksys wrt54g router
Has anyone found a ics build with sense that works with wifi calling?
The major issue is kineto_gan.ko a module in /system/lib/module
It is one of the main files needed to run WiFi Calling. The problem is it is Gingerbread base and kind of like when you port items from one sense to another it doesn't play so well.
The secondary issue is there isn't anything on TMO with ICS yet until the One S comes out and with a lot of more recent phones TMOUS patches in the WiFi calling at a later time so we can't really extract it from there either (yet).
Then brings in the issue of WiFi encryption, setups, and so on that mess with the way the call is carried through the network to properly register to TMO.
So it is like others have said. Some people will have good luck some wont. At home mine gets texts just fine but calls I can't rely on it and won't until Tmobile gets us a version we can use.
Yeah I think even when the one s comes out even though won't be helpful either. That will probably have the newer IMS wifi calling like the amaze does and not be compatible because that is more reliant on hardware supposedly and if nothing else needs a newer sim.
May need to wait till there is a offical rom update relased from T-Mobile.
I haven't had reliable wifi calling in any ROM in at least the last 6 months. Would work fine and then crash, requiring a reboot to fix only to repeat the process. Sometimes that crash took 2 minutes and sometimes 30.
With the ICS builds I've been trying it's always closer to 2 minutes but text works fine. It's been rough since I rely on the wifi calling because of the weak signal when I'm at home. I'm expecting it will be much more reliable when T-Mobile releases the official Sensation build which they sent back to HTC,... because of the wifi problem from what I've heard.
Lucky I found this thread (thank you Google), I thought i was having a bad time with calls dying after 5 minutes or so, but from what I hear from you guys, guess I've got it good (just gotta make sure I'm not on wifi calling during an important call). Although, i really wished it worked well for voice calls as I'm always within different buildings and no guarantee of signal in there (same for my apartment). SMS & MMS work fine though
I'm running latest ARHD (ICS) btw. Although some of this problem might be due to the devices themselves different config, etc.
I'm using Virtuous Inquisition v4.0.1 and WiFi calling works perfectly fine with fast connection. It didn't work so well for me on ARHD
It's hit or miss. Not much in between. Stick with gb if you want WiFi calling to work. That's what I have to do. People on here act like you're crazy to want WiFi callinh to work.

3G/HSPA Connectivity Issue

Hi,
My One S seems to occasionally have a few connectivity issues with 3G, I am not sure they are related to the signal issues already discussed in other threads in this forum. I have an international handset, MAO black version (has two tiny chips too, but not worth complaining about), running stock firmware, haven't done the dev unlock yet.
1) Sometimes the phone shows 'No Service', but I still have a working data connection and can make calls. Sending/receiving SMS appears not to work for some reason though. Can work around by switching into and out of airplane mode. Until I do that any SMS I compose under these conditions just pends, after the workaround they do get sent after a few minutes.
2) Sometimes something seems to go wrong with the 3G data connection, all the internet apps suddenly say they have no connection, alogcat says that DNS lookup is repeatedly failing even though I have a strong signal and 3G/HSPA connection (also tried connecting to IP addresses directly, doesn't work either). Tried getting online via Wi-Fi and it works, but all the Internet connectivity fails if I turn Wi-Fi off. If I reboot the phone it is able to get online again.
I brought this problem up in a live chat with HTC customer support and they have advised me to arrange for them to collect the phone for repair, the shop from whom I bought the phone advised the same. Just thought I would share it here and find out if it is common, or it is likely, as HTC think, there's something wrong with my phone's antennae. (My thought is that both could also be software problems)
Anyone else experience problems like this?
I get the no service thing all the time, I pull it out of my pocket and press the power button, it says no service. I am going to call t-mobile in the next few days, I am trying to collect more data. It does it on my same spot on the couch where I used to get good coverage on my old phone. It does it on the same desk at work that I used to get good reception at. It kinda sucks.

Yup, I get that and trying to get more data before sending it back to HTC. I'm not really certain but it's as if there is something wrong antennae? Seems to be quite a few with similar mobile network issues though.
I still have my old Motorola and with sim out of One S in the reception is good where the One S struggles to get a signal - if at all
I have the same issue as Kenyw:
No connection for a while although within covered area.
Strong connection bars but no internet
Usually I switch to airplane mode and back then it works...until the next time!
Very frustrating! I don't think changing the phone would solve the problem!
I have the same exact issue as the OP. Another example would be the streaming of music using Pandora and Slacker. I can listen to 1 song and skip 2 or 3 songs at best before I start having issues where it just keeps loading and I am in 4G range and 3G which shouldn't be a problem still.
Same issue here.

I did exchange my One S for another and it is just the same
It's a bit of a queer issue. I know where I live I have a good Three UK signal as per experience with the Motorola phone. I can be anywhere between 2 bars (approx 104dBm) and no signal in the house and around the yard. Yet I can walk 20 yards towards mast approx 1 mile away and as soon as I get LOS (no buildings, trees) on the mast I get full signal???
I buy my One-S a week ago in Germany and facing the same issue in Israel with Orange 3.5G network. I really don't know what to do now.

Alon,
As mentioned in many different threads opened here in XDA, the issue is related to the phone and its current software version and not to the operator/SIM/area in the world.
Stay tuned and hopefully shortly HTC will provide OTA update or root your device and install one of the custom ROMs based on the new RUU 1.70 which might be solving this issue.
Oren
Thanks,
I will keep waching the threads around waiting for solution.

Data connection issues.

Hi. I was using my Sensation last night, went to bed and woke up the next day only to find that my 4G connection wasn't working! The signal bars were white and the icon (currently an H) is flashing. What does this mean? How can I fix it? I can only use Wifi at the moment, and I DO NOT pay an extra $10/mo to deal with this! How can I fix this? I've checked my data settings, rebooted my phone, scanned fir viruses, but can't figure it out!

this happened to me the other day, even in 3G/4G mode my data would never connect and E would just keep flashing over and over again (in like 10 sec. intervals) thought it was a ROM problem so I restored a backup and sure enough, the problem was still happening. I could still make calls and send texts fine tho. its not happening to me anymore, but I found it weird. could it possibly be T-Mobile messing with their towers or something in preparation for LTE?
Well, I'm not sure what caused this very same issue for me a couple days ago. I can say that it ONLY effected my AOSP (CM9) rom, but my Sense rom was unphased. It seems to be a common recent complaint in the OpenSensation thread...
I've since then done a fresh install of CM9 RC1 with the addition of Tamcore's kernel. Although I'm not experiencing the described symptom any longer, I can say that my data speeds are far from exceptional. I'm not sure what is going on, but it does seem to be carrier related.
I experienced the same 1 day after flashing CM9 RC1. I re-flashed the Virtuous Inq. ROM I was using previously and the problem went away
My phone went back to normal later on. I think you were right mulletcutter, they might have been servicing it.

Same data connectivity issue
I have two sensations, both shows similar data connectivity issue on TMobile. Data signal jump to connected and not connected for couple hours, and eventually problem will go away. I have both phones rooted running either CM9 or Kang. So far I have tried couple following things but no solutions. I believe its HTC Sensation hardware issue:
1. Flickering so far seen usually after night long charge in the morning. It will last couple hours, some time days.
2. Changing/reflashing ROMs did not help at all and saw same issue continued.
3. One of my friend has Sensation and he also has seen same issue.
4. Some time going into Phone application(Dialer) and then Settings/Advance settings and come back without doing anything helps but not always.
Please post here is you have temporary/permanent solution or even know the root cause of this data connectivity issue.
Also thinking to call Tmobile to get some kind of help but not expecting much as I bought phones more than year ago but less than 2 years. I don't want to give any more commitment/agreement with Tmobile as planning to move to value plans to save some money. If Tmobile does not help, thinking to try American Express to conver it under extentended warranty as I paid by AMEX credit card.
Thanks
Have you tried the application get ril? I was having some issues myself, I'm also T-Mobile. I tried get ril and found out my radio and ril we're not matching. The application suggested a ril for download and once I did that I went from one bar of connection to five bars of connection on H. It made a big difference for me. Perhaps it could also help you? You can download get ril from the market. It sure won't hurt to try. Best of luck.

Its a defect in the basic aosp framework. There is nothing you can do to fix it. There is also nothing your usage did to start it.
The good news is that it should disappear on its on after a few hours.
Check my threads started history. You will find a thread near the top of that list showing almost all there is to know about this issue. I think my thread might be linked in the first 2 posts of the cm10 faq thread too.

No service on Straight Talk if I leave my zip code?!

Hey everyone, I just bought an Infuse on Evilbay, and the first thing I pretty much did before I even stuck a sim in it was root the thing. I used this root found here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1613523 (option C), and I installed a custom CRT on animation. I also changed my boot animation. I also have a root explorer on the phone, but I have only deleted stock apps. At least, I am sure I only deleted stock apps. The only bugs I have noticed are my original contact list does not function, so I got a new contact app and dialer. The other bug I have noticed if I try to use the stock task manager, the phone will reboot. So, I have a dif app that kills tasks and manages tasks.
So here is my problem, yesterday I left my town of 15k, traveled east on I90 50 miles to Rapid City, SD with a population of 75k. I got about 10 miles east and I lost all service. I was able to use navigation with GPS, but that was it. I called Straight Talk, and I was told the phone only works best in the activation zip code. I posted on Howard about this, and other ST users have been able to take their phones through multiple zip codes, states etc..
What I need to know is how do I fix my phone to work elsewhere? I know the APN settings are correct, I get the H+ icon when the data is active. I am using the APN settings from straightalksim.com. When I activated my phone, I had to use the zip in Rapid City as it would not let me activate with my zip. Would that that have anything to do with my issues? I appreciate all of your guy's help in advance, thank you!

Well...you could either put your fix in this thread so you can better the site & help other members who might encounter the same problem later, or you could just continue to sound like a giant douchebag & whine about how no one knew how to help you.
Sorry, I am more of an asshole than D-Bag! I don't know how I fixed it honestly. I did flash a new rom, and I flashed the KI3 modem, and bada bing bada boom all fixed and working. Wi-Fi speeds running 3-4 down 1.5 ish up, data speeds 1.2-1.5 down, 1mb ish up. So, its a good modem to use. GPS locks in 1-2 seconds without obstruction as well.
Well if you don't know what you did...leads me to believe that maybe service was just down and/or flaky in the area you were traveling...like a dead zone...have one near my house anytime I pass through the area I lose service...im on att by the way

As I said, I think the modem in the original package was wonky, who really knows. I know that my phone is working fine now, and I am happy.
