Help Me Help Us. - Captivate General

Hey folks I'm gonna be honest and say that I did some research not a lot but some.
Things I have
A brand spanking new - Samsung Captivate - ROGERS running 2.2
Things I want.
- to make a full back up - to restore it to FULLY Factory stock either 2.1-or 2.2
- Not to have any At&t logo.
- Not to have TouchWiz UI & use a launcher pro style UI, like default android screens.
- Remove bloatware - unwanted apps - Rogers Shop, My Account,Kobo, Layar, Daily Briefiing, On-Demand, Ringbacks, Samsung apps, etc..
- Mobile Wifi Hotspot.
- Wifi Sync if possible.
now how I'm going to help YOU!....
as im doing this i can make a step by step guide to all of this for rogers users who are new to android.

This has all been done with just a few exceptions specific to Rogers (not having an AT&T boot screen, different apps to get rid of). Try looking at this thread first: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=761819

So i'm not sure if this is what you are doing or if you have questions on how to accomplish this. I'll presume questions unless noted otherwise.
-Full backup, if there's a way, I don't know how to do it. I'd love to know.
-AT&T logo, not sure but some of the threads have discussed it.
-Remove touchWiz, simple. Download launcher Pro, or Go Launcher, or ADW launcher, or Zeam or any one of the other launchers on the market. Install those and choose it as your default. I prefer to use HomeSwitcher to make that transition more painless, that is also available on the market.
-To remove unwanted bloat apps, root the phone, and install Titanium Backup for Root. Choose to remove those apps through the TB interface. Its also a good idea to create backups before you remove the bloat, just in case it breaks something else.
-Mobile Wifi hotspot is included with 2.2. Go into settings and wireless network, the settings are in there.
-Wifi Sync, there is a program called WiFi Android manager. It is an app you install on your phone and PC and you can sync contacts, calendar, pictures, just about everything. I've used it and been successful with it.
Good luck.

Depends on how much tweaking you want to do and how comfortable you are. Like previous post said, you are going have to root for a couple of things. If you want to super customize, you can flash a new rom. With that said, rooting will be your first step. I used 'super one click root'. Works very well. Titanium backup, as the name implies, will help you do the full backup you want. As for the other things, they have mostly been discussed before, just use the search function in the forum. It's s lot easier than using google for specific info.

Oh yeah, you might be able to use odin to flash back to stock if you need. I know it works for 2.1, not sure about 2.2 though.

i tried the titanium back up it made me install busybox, so i did....it failed. but it says im not rooted, but i have a superuser icon.

I had the same problem. Open TB again and click on ' problems?' Should install a new busybox. Also, open superuser and make sure TB is added as an app. Last, does TB ask for permission when you open it?

Try installing BusyBox again. Sometimes it doesn't work. Make sure you also set that app to always allow superuser. I've had instances where its asked for root but the prompt was behind something and I never accepted it. If that doesn't work, reboot and try it again. If still having problems, post back and hopefully one of the members can help.

[Q] Why are Android stocks tied to the system?

I was just wondering, why if you delete certain stock apps (Or Bloatware for that matter), they cause FCs or instability in general? Are they tied into the OS somehow?
If somebody can explain this, (In layman
s terms, I'm still learning things about Android) I'd be very thankful.
Bloatware can be removed when you root your device through the explorer. But you can download custom roms with an unlocked bootloader which usually have no bloatware those are two ways of getting rid of the carrier crap. Your choice.
It's also dependent on your device & what type of rom you're running. There should be a list of safe to remove apps for your device/rom.
If you're iffy of something, try freezing it first with Titanium Backup. If all goes well then you can uninstall it.

Thanks for your quick reply, but what I meant was why is it that if you delete a stock apps (Like DriveSmart from Samsung)

it messes with the system.
EDIT: Figured it was worth mentioning that I don't own an Android device yet (But it'll either be the Epic 4G or the Sidekick 4G [I lurk in the latter's forum]), so I'm trying soak up as much info as I can receive.
So when I get either device [Even though hands on experience always trumps reading things off forums] I won't waste time figuring things out.
EDIT #2: And thanks plainjane, missed your post somehow.

Bloatware and how to safely remove them...

OK... I know I have been full of questions and really I just posted another question in the general forum a moment ago but I am trying to stick to the specific forums for specific questions so don't get mad at me ._.
ANYWAY... Looking at the underlying processes and other apps I will never use how does one safely remove these? I have heard of "freezing" things so you can defrost them later just in case you decide otherwise.
Any thoughts? Would this require a root?

Ah thank you. Now in terms of doing that isn't there a list somewhere that lists all the "safe" apps to freeze? I have found lists pertaining to other tablets but not specifically the Tab 7 plus yet. Unless I'm just blind and it's been right in front of me (which is very likely) xD
I have not seen such a list but I haven't looked for one either.
Ah OK. I think I had found one for the Galaxy Tab (which I am assuming is the 10.1) and another one (which I forget what it was) so I figured I would ask.
Thank you all for your input though!
what bloatware are in your gtab?
Well, I'm getting ready to go somewhere so I can't look but all share comes to mind since I will never use it. That and for some reason after rooting my Tab (did it last night and I am quite happy) the samsung screen saver thing came back! Even though I uninstalled it.
The thing is about 50 megabytes of showcase video of the very tablet I am using...

If for any reason you boot into recovery there is a "hidden" partition that will re-install all that crap. If you install garyd9's CWM recovery it will not do this.
I have uninstalled almost 50 programs on my gtab that I dont use. Its stripped down to a bare tab. I HATE unwanted un needed programs.

50? Can you list these apps?
I cleaned (froze with TB to be exact) and it's not even close to 10, but I am overly cautious so not to break the Tab. For example, I froze Polaris Office, AP Plus widget, etc.
Yes I will. Ill compare it tomorrow and post what I removed about to go to bed for now.

1). Apps

3). Built-in wallpapers (live or static)

You can easily remove all apps that you don't need. You just need rooted device and root explorer or something similar. Then go to system/app and remove app you want.

I got an error too when I intially tried to use Root Explorer, i opened up superuser (didnt actually do anything accept check the settings), then tried again, and access was granted properly. I already had the latest binaries via busybox so I'm not sure what happened.

I think this is an issue with SuperUser itself.
The problem is, I cannot set the Automatic Response to "Prompt". If I do use that, then ANY apps that requires root access will be automatically DENIED. The only solution is to set the Automatic Response to "Allow", which I don't want to.
I tested this with LBE Privacy apps. With "Prompt" set in SuperUser, after every reboot, 2 out of 3 times LBE failed to start. I had to open SuperUser and start LBE again and it works. When I set to "Allow", no more problem.

[ROGERS] bloatware list?

Was wondering if anyone has made a comprehensive list of bloatware that is safe to uninstall for the I727R yet? I've used a couple of roms, and they're great, just not as stable as the stock.
Would love to remove *all* the bloat from my device, just don't know which ones are 100% safe to trash yet....
Also, from what I've read, I can just change the kernel if I want to oc, right? What's a good kernel for that? Da_og?
Sent from my rooted SGS2 I727R using stock, until something really stable comes along using xda-app
Two that come to mind off the top of my head
Da_G oc kernal
or
faux123 oc kernal
I've had no problems with either one, but only have limited experience with them.
And those are pretty stable on the Rogers offering? Sorry for the 20 questions, but I'm a novice at best with Android... and this device in particular doesn't seem to have a lot of material that lends itself to inspire absolute confidence in someone of my level of understanding, lol

I have not tried these kernals with stock rogers gingerbread, but from what I have read around these forums it sounds fairly stable.
if it were me I would just try it; and see if you can get it nice and stable thats the fun of flashing around.

If you think it might be bload but you aren't sure just go into titanium backup and freeze it. It is the exact same but if you run into problems later just unfreeze it and its right back on your phone. If it turns out you really dont need it then just unistall it
I'm running the ATT bln mod kernel on ATT hardware but a rogers rom and I have no issues.

After flashing the TPC v3 rom, here are my list of frozen apps. I've also got a lot of third party apps to replace stock launcher/dialer/keyboard/etc.... so I've frozen the stock ver of those.
I'll repeat the advise stated earlier in the thread, use Titanium Backup to freeze the apps instead of removing them completely until you're sure you don't need those.

One suggestion: TwLauncher, I'm pretty sure if you were to do a factory reset phone would crash after the inital setup(language blah blah).
Second thing, I've frozen secphone.apk for some time with no ill effects(not sure what it does). Could be screenshot service?

Thanks! I've just frozen secphone as well.
Groovy, thanks xda, tom. I was holding off flahing any new roms... but with the card issues, as well as reading the rave reviews of TPC's rom, I'm going to give it a run tonight.
Also, I'll name my first partition after you~
Great
Great list - just rooted, purchased TB, and froze almost all of the above mentioned (except TwLauncher and related).
Seemed to free up a lot of available ram on my SGS2 LTE.
Next step would be trying out 'roms', which I have next to none knowledge of.
Or just wait for the official OTA update coming up in a month or two...
honestly rogers doesnt put as much bloatware on the phone as att does to their version. I removed more Samsung bloatware then rogers bloatware when I was running stock. I'm now running CocaColaClassic and it works flawlessly on my Rogers GS2LTE i727r plus when he updates his rom he includes a update zip. I've tried every single rom and thats the best, cyanogenmod 7 is the second best rom available. Though this is my opinion. Also I use LauncherPro instead of twlauncher (find it much more efficient and faster)
Whats better on Coke than TPCs? Just curious

Freezing apps with TB doesn't free up any memory:
here is a relevant excerpt from TB Technical Guidline
17. Does “freezing” apps free space from phone memory ?
No, it doesn’t. The “frozen” app remains on the phone with its data, it’s just that the app gets completely disabled until you “defrost” it.

WILL factory reset wipe these?
I cannot ROOT my phone. #1 because I don't know how. #2 because I can risk voiding warranty.
Factory wipe will only reset it back to how it was when you got the device... with all those apps. I know in ICS it lets you all but remove apps like hides them and kills them but your device doesn't have ICS.
I would suggest getting a third party launcher like Launcher pro or ADW EX and hiding the apps.
On android, no. Without rooting, the baked in apps are there to stay.
you need root you phone and then find some uninstall tool in MARKet.
how do i know for sure some of these apps are there to stay?
I meant to bold some of them I guess they didn't copy over.
Like all these useless rogers apps. pay for a worse navigation? I hope your joking!
crappy music player... no thanks.
If they were on the phone when you got it then they'll be on there after a factory reset, as that's exactly what happened to it prior to being put in the box.
Only rooting will allow you to remove them if they're system apps.
Alternatively you could try a different launcher. I only suggest this because many of the launchers on the Market will allow you to hide apps from your app drawer. Okay, they're still there, but you can just forget about them and carry on regardless.
ya you have to root to do any thing about it. If you do root make sure you make backups before you start uninstalling these programs just in case.
i have the thrilll 4g almost the same phone as you and i know what you mean what i did was get titanium backup pro has to be pro and froze all the apps i dont like so they dont eat battery or ram they still take up space on the card but o well

There are lists for some devices, but it varies from ROM to ROM and device to device. The best way to test is to use something like Titanium Backup and freeze an app. This is equivalent to uninstalling something, without actually uninstalling it. If anything goes wrong you simply unfreeze it.
I was in the same boat you were about a week ago. I started reading about rooting (even watched a few videos) and it seemed pretty straight forward. Since then, not only have I rooted it, I've also upgraded to the latest ICS v12 and did away with all the crap that was on my original Eclair OS. Happy camper now.

I can understand how you might be leery of trying to root your phone for fear of "bricking" it. However, there's plenty of guides out there that can help you "unbrick" it as long as you do the research.
A simple google search came up with this tutorial that seems pretty straight forward.

[Q] Simple Google ROM for GT3110

hello,
It may have been already posted, but i would like to put on my GT3110 a simple & stable ROM without any additional SAMSUNG layer or any other modification.
i've tested the ROM provided by default, very slow and too much stuff that i don't want in it.
i've then tested the CyanogenMod 10 nighlty build, but the Keyboard wasn't working even after having done the clean as recommended on the web.
i've then tested the ROM RomsWell but it contains the SAMSUNG layer.
i'm now using the Paranoid Android 2.51 but the paranoidSettings seems to modify the resolution of the tablet and icons are not positionned correctly when moving from landscape to portrait.
i don't forget how big the work done by all these people providing this for free mainly, but as this tablet is dedicated for a gift to someone not android addict nor interesting in changing ROMs regularly,
So i would like to implement a Google stock ROM with nothing more/less than what is provided by google. even if i loose some performances or other things.
can you tell me where i can find this for the GT3110?
thank you in advance
If you install a launcher like Nova Launcher Prime, you'll find much of the Samsung layer gone. Some of the Samsung apps are superior. Email, Contacts and Planner come to mind. I would call the system easy for unsophisticated users and reliable as well. There plenty of help and a real user manual.
I've been flashing roms for years now and decided to stay with a rooted SGT27. Custom roms, even AOSP aren't that easy to use and there are always bugs.

If you (or the person its for ) isnt into modding Android, stick to stock. I use Apex launcher (Free) and to be honest they are all pretty much the same. Touchwiz isnt that bad and Samsung stock apps are really cool.
I would suggest updating it to JellyBean stock via Odin/Heimdall or just wait for the official update via Samsung.I personally use AOKP M1 but its a little confusing to set things up at first and needs tweaking.NOT noob friendly at all and takes time to work it out. ( but that's why I like it).
I would be careful giving "Root" access to inexperienced users as they may get themselves into trouble with it....Remember it gives them full access and control of the ROM. I would suggest a start up manager either way ,to stop all the junk starting up when you boot. Samsung loves bloat lol.
If you want pure Android, flash an AOSP no frills ROM.

hello,
It may have been already posted, but i would like to put on my GT3110 a simple & stable ROM without any additional SAMSUNG layer or any other modification.
i've tested the ROM provided by default, very slow and too much stuff that i don't want in it.
i've then tested the CyanogenMod 10 nighlty build, but the Keyboard wasn't working even after having done the clean as recommended on the web.
i've then tested the ROM RomsWell but it contains the SAMSUNG layer.
ican you tell me where i can find this for the GT3110?

This does not exist, in fact it does not exist for any device. Stop dreaming of the mythical "clean" ROM that is 10x faster. There is a lot more to a functioning ROM than Google open source Android. There is no such thing as a pure AOSP ROM for any device because its takes Android + kernel + drivers + libs + apps + bootloader + etc. to have a functioning ROM. and everything except the base Android API is device and version specific.
The Samsung touchwiz launcher doesn't slow anything down and if you don't like the way it looks, as suggested above, install one of the good third party launchers and its not even used.
I find this tablet running the Samsung stock ICS to be very fast and clean, So one would wonder what are you doing to it to make it "slow" There's only a few Samsung apps included and unless you run them, they just sit there doing nothing. You can hide them if you don't want to see the icons.
thank you guys,
i'll try the JellyBean standard ROM as recommended and try another free launcher
