Attention folks wanting Froyo from ATT - Captivate General

Forget it. We no longer need it. Samsung has released source code for the two out of the three captivate models. The Rogers and armani froyo sources are released and we already have some great ROMS based on them. So I say to hell with waiting and THANKS XDA DEVS!

I was just thinking this, but secretly still being bitter about AT&T not releasing froyo. What if the same thing happens with Gingerbread? (the other 2 get it first, we end up limping behind) :/
Although if not for the XDA devs, I'd probably still be watching my phone say "media scanner running" for what seems like days.....

I say we tell ATT to EAT SH*T!

Ah, but we do need it for the Audience A1026 drivers unless someone finds them somewhere else. Neither the Armani, nor the I986 contain the Audience chip.

As for gingerbread I doubt any of the current crop of SGS phones will ever see it.

okay new to this where r the source codes and what do i do...i have 2.1..thanks

What ROM's have been built from the source code? Nothing I have seen mentions being built from source, only using the leaked firmware...unless I am confused here?

Andromeda for one, based on Armani and Cognition is based on the rogers release.
The Rogers source just dropped very recently so I imagine future cog releases will be even better.

This was kind of my point. These ROMs haven't been built from source...I guess except for Andromeda. Hopefully the devs we have really know code and can utilize the source.
This is my captivate. There are many like it buy this one is mine.

Sorry, but Armani is not the same device as SGH-i897. If you flash through Odin the tar posted on samfirmware, it won't detect your sdcard and you'll have a mapping button problem, and screen orientation issue (Just like i9000 ROMs)
There're only two models sharing almost the same specs:
- SGH-i896 (Rogers Captivate)
- GT-i9088 (From China Unicom)

Some of us just like messing around with stuff. Just like some of us add more hp to our rides via flashing the pcm with certain calibrations, adding nitrous, or supercharger, diff camshaft, better valve springs etc. I myself like doing stuff like that. Xbox modded, controllers modded, ps2 modded list goes on. If i wanted something that worked well out the box i prob got an iphone.

[DISCUSSION] Mesmerize source is out (SCH-I500 USC)

SCH-I500_USCC_OpenSource.zip @ opensource.sammy
Gonna be checking this out with interest.. Wonder if they cleaned it up any as compared to what they gave us..
This might be useful after all. Kernel just compiled without any changes.. Samsung might've finally released some working source.
cool. let us know how it works when you flash it.
Oh, I'm not going to flash the kernel
Unlike our source, we could compile this source straight from Samsung.. This leads me to believe their code for their OS build is probably clean too.. So we might be able to use some of it to get aosp going.
I generally don't recommend anyone flash kernel's from different HW, but in this instance I think with their kernel source and our stock ramdisk, all that will probably happen is a nice US cellular logo, and a kernel panic. I'm sure someone bored/desperate enough will come along and do it soon enough.

While I agree with your statement I don't think the hardware is actually different in this case. That said, I'm not going to be the first.
I'm also interested to see what .apks from the Mesmerize will work on the Fascinate.
I started a thread discussing that here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822186
Very interested in this...hope this will help out the develolment of our phones..
FWIW, I'm pretty sure the model number of the Mesmerize is the SCH-i500, same as the Fascinate, meaning the hardware is identical, so theoretically the code should all be fully interchangeable.

angel (fallingup) flashed the kernel I built a few days ago using our ramdisk.. It was interesting, but didn't quite get there. No end-of-the-world crash, but it didn't make it far into the boot.
Still looking to see what else we can rip out this source code.
Just to share, I recall some people being disappointed that the Fascinate's Contacts app did not have the ability to swipe left/right for messaging/call. I just copied over the Contacts.apk from the Mesmerize dump and it does work on the Fascinate and has the swipe functionality for those that are interested.

Europe and Canada released froyo first, ATT was late to the party.
Because it was THE FROYO RELEASE.... for AT&T.

Uhh...because thats when it was released for the Captivate on ATT (and your in a captivate forum)
Was it released?
I mean what does it mean to be released? When I think about all the (stated) people that bought the captivate (at&t), I have to imagine that the large majority of them are not "tech savy", and 1) don't even know there's an update 2) wouldn't really know how to go about updating even if they did.
I think, maybe, much of the bad press prompted this push out "early". Without OTA, this apparently large number of people (without techie type friends) may never update.
Having said that, I work with someone who just bought one and it came with 2.2 installed. Seemed to lag quite a bit. So does that define "released"? Does it start the clock on the source code release? Will there be a 2.2.1 or .2 or .3 release around the corner? Does anybody really know what time it is?
Thoughts?

rogers in canada has a captivate. they released open source 2.2 for it, but i don't know if there was much done with this open source by the devs. or if most of the JL1 roms are just stripped down versions of the rogers release. Maybe because ATT KB1 is a newer build or that it may contain uses for the audience chip i guess would be the only additional benefits over the rogers release?? i may be wrong.

The Samsung Galaxy S, the ORIGINAL one, the i9000, has its firmware straight from Samsung. No bloat whatsoever. That is what the guy above was referring to, and that is what this firmware is for. Its SAMSUNG's version of GB, with a few added samsung apps.

Ice Cream Sandwitch / Android 4.0 Roms

Sorry if this is a dumb question. As i dont know how Roms come to be or how people port stuff from one phone to another etc.
But my question is, once Android 4.0 is released with the Prime. Will there be Android 4.0 Roms for the G2X. And if so... Will it take long?
If there wont be. I might have to switch to Verizon and get the Prime.

Yes, i'm sure once ICS source code is available our devs will port it over to our devices. With ICS being delayed probaly till end of November it's just a waiting game now...
I dont think it will take too long. I guess it depends how fast the devs get it and create one.
I had a Milestone 2 with a locked bootloader and it finally got Gingerbread but I think G2x is unlocked and easy to create.
Im sure it wont take no time to Cyanogenmod to stark working on ICS
I'm sure we'll get it. Thanks to guys like faux and the cm team, we already have an aosp base. I'm sure there will be drivers that need to be written/re-written, and bugs to work out, but we'll get it. Plus, I'd put money on the fact that once the source code for ics is released, the cm team will start integrating the newer version into cyanogenmod. We probably won't get it right away, and we definitely won't get it officially from lg or tmobile, but I'm sure we'll get it eventually.
Once CM8 is released, it should be released on the G2x along with other devices. I just hope we can disable the software Home & Menu keys.

Android 4.0 is suppose to be compatible with all android devices within 2 years old, and manufactures have agreements with Google that there should be official releases on all these devices. I highly doubt that will happen.
Also, the next Nexus device, by whatever name, won't be exclusively Verizon. It may for a period, but the FCC Documents show that it does in fact HAVE AT&T/Global AND T-Mobile 3G/4G bands, and no LTE.
Wait for official announcements on the phone, but I can guarantee the G2x will have 4.0 one way or another.
The agreement to update all devices for 18 months its for devices released post-ics. We're not eligible, though we will probably get CM8.

from what I hear MR. CM himself uses the g2x as his personal device so I think it will happen prety fast probally faster than others. I could be wrong about that I read it on a fourm when the g2x was still new. You never know how reliable those sources are.
I heard he got a job with Samsung. Though I speculate nVidia will release drivers since so many devices use the T2 soc
Not too worried since the g2x community has a lot of talented and smart developers already
I would expect an official upgrade as well though, seriously its a google experience phone, while not the top selling it has the specs and what not to get the upgrade.

[Q] g2x, nexus prime, and ICS

so samsung announced the unveiling of the nexus prime: october 19. i was watching a video on huffington post and it was talking about different handsets being announced through different manufacturers and carriers, all running ICS. it really made it sound like ICS is going to be a selective update and that some phones may not be getting it.
what do you think the odds of the g2x getting this update are? i'm slightly annoyed that the prime is being released shortly after i bought my g2x. i figured we would have another droid bionic situation and be waiting months for the prime. i'm going to be even more annoyed if the g2x is another tmobile forgotten device.
thoughts?
source: huffingtonpost.com/2011/10/14/android-ice-cream-sandwich-release-date_n_1010973.html
I doubt we will get an update, but eventually we'll get a system dump of ICS & the devs here will make it better than what it is.
I have a feeling it's not going to get it. It's a great phone, but T-Mobile just doesn't seem to be pushing it very hard. There is a small chance that this phone will get ICS, but I wouldn't hold my breath. We'll most likely have to wait for the developers here to get their hands on it before we get it.
Well,i donr think we will get an update. But I'm okay . Miui have the apn fix now, so I'm happy with my g2x lolz
Sent from my LG-P999 using Tapatalk
LG will never update this phone ever again. Gingerbread was an absolute fiasco and they have washed their hands of the G2X. We'll probably get CM8 though, and just like with 7 devs will use that as a springboard to create all kinds of things.
CM8 is better than any update a carrier can provide us with.
