[Q] BlackBerry Pearl 9105 GPS problem. - General Questions and Answers

Hi, just bought brand new BlackBerry Pearl 3G 9105 from phones4u.co.uk. Can't find anywhere how to use GPS and navigation. There is no "compass" icon on the main sreen (other Pearls have it). The only option I can find is "Location services" and thats it. My network is O2 and blackberry services hasn't been activated yet. Does this phone have a GPS module built in???
For any help I'll be very grateful! Just do not know what to do

For GPS to work on blackberry pearl, it needs navigation maps, which are usually downloaded in little pieces as required. And because these maps are downloaded, you must be subscribed to a data plan and have a radio signal for it than only gps is possible

Google maps, "My Location" (GPS with no GPS, cool!)

This new version of Google maps works on my treo 750. It knows your location based on the GSM towers. (no GPS needed, pretty cool)

I have to force my treo off hsdpa into GSM/EDGE mode though or it wont lock on correctly. Menu>Preference>Phone Settings>Services>Band Selection>Select GSM instead of Auto or UMTS.

This other free tower based gps app is better and works even if I don't force my phone off hsdpa.

Great find.
I found a way to force google maps to work with HSDPA
(no need to disable things back to EDGE as posted above)
Basically, Navizon has a nice option that will setup a virtual GPS port. Here's how you get everything working
1) install www.navizon.com (it's free)
2) launch navizon
3) Menu, Options, hit the left arrow icon (lower right on screen) until the GPS tab appears (lower left on screen)
4)Set everything as follows
-GPS: NO GPS (Navizon Vrtula GPS)
-Baud Rate 4800
-Auto Start (NOT checked)
-Output Port: COM9: (Virtual)
-Load outlput port into driver memory (check this box ON)
-Use physical output port (NOT checked)
-Click ok
5) Click start, settings, System tab, External GPS
6) Programs Tab, GPS program port: GPD9,
7) hardware tab, GPS hardware port: COM9, Baud rate 4800
8) Access tab, Manage GPS automatically (check this box ON)
9) click ok, x out, you should be back in Navigon now
10) click the start action button (lower left screen in Navizon)
11) You should zip to your location on the map. Ok now while you leave navizon running, go ahead and startup Google Maps
12) Googlemaps, Menu, Options, GPS Settings, "Set by Windows....." check this on! Click ok
13) Menu, "Use GPS"
BOOM ! Google will work and you can leave HSDPA full speed internet access working instead of having to force it to GSM/EDGE as above.

need data plan
just curious-does this feature use your data plan, airtime, or neither? In other words, is there additional charge for it, or does it require a data/internet plan?
Navizon - no location found
Does anyone know of any tricks to get Navizon working? I am in a fairly metropolitan area but all I get is 'no location found'. I tried in both UMTS and GSM modes and neither one works for me.
Google Maps, on the other hand, I can get to work, with a 3000 meter accuracy, but only in GSM mode.
Any ideas?

When I first signed up for Navizon it didn't work for me either. Then, on the main web site, I found that they had set my default location somewhere in Georgia: I live in California. After much trial-and-error was able to get my default location to set my local area. Navizon now works. However, I didn't like it much and have moved back to Google Maps. I like the Google product much better even with the GSM limitation.

Yes, if you click on the link "Get more info" in the video link, it says that you will need a data plan for the maps.
My Location now working with 3G. I did a hard reset (for unrelated reasons) on my ATT branded WM6 750, downloaded (the latest?) Google maps and have been 100% successful in getting "My Location" to work with 3G. I'm not sure if it was the reset or if Google updated the software, but what a huge improvement.

GPS Question

I have a Verizon XV6900 with unlimited data connection and I have the gps enabled with Google Maps (cannot seem to get it to work with TomTom)(any suggestions would be appriciated).
Anyways, my wife has a ATT Tilt with no data plan. Her gps works fine so is there a way or software where we can see each other's gps locations without her having a data connection?
Thanks
Kevin
Any GPS software with bundled maps don't require any data connection (tomtom/igo).
Google maps does not bundle any map, so it has to cross check your gps location, and download the map for that location.

Spoofing Sprint Family Locator Location

I use Location Spoofer on my EVO to watch blacked out content based on location and other things. One thing I noticed is that it appears that Sprint Family locator doesn't use the same location data as google maps and ect. Is there any way to spoof the data SFL uses?
I dont think so. Sprint Locator uses the gps signal, whereas those other programs just use your approximate network location based on tower triangualtion.

[Q] Maps, GPS etc. outside network

Assuming you are outside a 3G signal or wifi (or out of U.S. for that matter), is it possible to still use some services? For instance, if I were to take a trip to virgin islands or the like outside of Sprint NW, I'd still like to use GPS, map data of the area, and any other services that would be available. Any information, thoughts or helpful apps?

[Q] GPS on wifi showing as Rose Bay Australia

Has anyone had this problem?
GPS is fine anywhere I go especially when on mobile data. But ONLY on my home wireless my gps location always shows up as Rose Bay Australia when I am from Connecticut.
I searched HTC rose bay Australia and found that there is a htc location here:
2 Park Street Sydney NSW 2000, Australia
(02) 9004 7860
which is like 6 KM away from the gps location.
I had no clue why its doing this. Only thing I can think of is it has something to do w/ the mac address and location it was built?
Its not the GPS, the location is being read from your WiFi router and internet provider. Turn off GPS and I bet it will still show the same location. Is your home internet routed through a VPN or anything like that?
Come to think of it , i just upgraded to DDWRT on my netgear n300
let me look through some of the settings
So I checked all my ddwrt settings and cant find anything that would cause it. No Vpn or anything. Its def my router. However on my PC it shows as normal location from IP service. So not sure.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
Just in case anyone else has this issue all I had to do was update the mac address and clone it to my modem.
You don't use a proxy, do you? That could be another cause
