[Q] Maps, GPS etc. outside network - General Questions and Answers

Assuming you are outside a 3G signal or wifi (or out of U.S. for that matter), is it possible to still use some services? For instance, if I were to take a trip to virgin islands or the like outside of Sprint NW, I'd still like to use GPS, map data of the area, and any other services that would be available. Any information, thoughts or helpful apps?

Spoofing Sprint Family Locator Location

I use Location Spoofer on my EVO to watch blacked out content based on location and other things. One thing I noticed is that it appears that Sprint Family locator doesn't use the same location data as google maps and ect. Is there any way to spoof the data SFL uses?
I dont think so. Sprint Locator uses the gps signal, whereas those other programs just use your approximate network location based on tower triangualtion.

You don't just "get" free wifi. You acquire it either as part of your data package through your carrier, from places like Starbucks, McDonalds, or Airports, or through unprotected access points.
You mention "while on the road" which leads me to believe that you may be referring to cellular data. If that is the case, there is no way you can get "free wifi", unless you have connections within your carriers billing center.
Hope this helps.

[Q] No secure connnection over T-mobile 3G or 2G Network

Hi, and thanks for reading. I'll be brief and clear as much as possible.
I am using:
Samsung Nexus S
Android OS 2.3.6 GRK39F
T-mobile US
My issue:
A secure connection (or https) cannot be established over 3G or 2G network.
it works fine over WiFi access.
Additional Info:
I used to have H2O wireless which uses AT&T's 2G Network, and I didn't have any problem like this.
Contacted T-mobile tech support and set APN settings as instructed, but still did not work.
This issue results in:
The phone cannot use Google services (Gmail, Market, etc.) native to the phone as well as apps that require authentication (facebook, twitter, etc.) over 3G or 2G network. In order to get around this, I have to connect to WIFI first to authenticate then it works fine over 3G or 2G.
Thank you again guys, and I am looking forward to getting your professional help.
T-mobile's new Monthly 4G plan may have a problem in their Data Network??
Actually, I found out that it's not my phone's problem, but it could be the problem of T-mobile network.
I've found a thread in t-mobile support page where a bunch of people complaining about the same problem.
They all bought t-mobile's Monthly 4G plan that just came out (Oct 16, 2011), which offers 100min talk, unlimited text, unlimited data (with 5GB throttling)
They are complaining that they cannot get https connection over 3G or 2G Data Network regardless of their cell phone.
I tried to post an outside link, but the forum does not allow me since I am new here.
This issue has been resolved.
The link in the prior reply now shows a solution to this issue.
Virtually, the "Web Guard" feature on the plan was causing the mess.
You can turn off the feature by yourself on tmobile website, or by calling their customer service.
They say it may take up to 2 hours for the action to fully take effect.

Travelling abroad question

I will be travelling to a foreign country next month. I have arranged to get a SIM while in country so I can continue to use my private Google maps and GPS on my phone while I am there. There are, of course, bandwidth restrictions and costs, so I am looking to keep the traffic utilized by my phone to an absolute minimum when utilizing the data signal via the SIM. I ran a traffic monitor on my data connection over the last 24 hours and with limited use of the phone, it still managed to cumulatively send/receive almost 180MB of data.
Can anyone suggest any apps or have any suggestions (short of uninstalling all of my other passive data-using apps) to control what apps are permitted to use the data connection? Any assistance is appreciated, thanks!
*I'm rockin' a Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II (SCH-I605) in case that affects anyone's response.

national roaming priority tool?

Hello!
I am with gsm carrier who uses national roaming for his services. There are 4 carriers for calls but the internet services are availiable onle when the phone is connected to one of them. This internet services carrier has good signal in cities but almost no signal in the countryside. However, the other carriers have stronger signal usually. So the effect is that the phone connects usually to no-internet carriers, even in the cities. I have to change carrier manually to internet carrier but this is not a solution as I have to manually reconnect to calls carriers when outside of the city.
So my question is if there is a way (tool) to prioritize carriers or in other words to set rules for the phone on how to choose services carrier?
