Why official AT&T Froyo update is delayed - Captivate General

Here is why http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/02/...a-2gb-to-phone-tethering-plans-launching-mob/
We know both Rogers 2.2 and T-Mo Vibrant 2.2 contain Mobile Hotspot, a.k.a. wi-fi tethering. Both require you have the special tethering plan activate in order for it to work (it is easily defeated on Rogers 2.2 by deleting a specific apk file). AT&T is simply wait for its mobile hotspot to be ready (2/13) before they release Captivate 2.2 ROM.

I wish that were true but I see no correlation between this and the release of an updated ROM.
At this point it's highly unlikely that they will be releasing an updated ROM for the Captivate...
I'm willing to bet there will be no more OTA updates for the Captivate.

This.
I'm hoping that the arrival of the iPhone to verizon will make the AT&T retention department work herder to keep my business and get me into a better phone. I don't see myself going another 18 months with this Captivate

I would take this as something to keep in mind, as yet another possible contributing factor, but this article does not specify that this is the reason why 2.2 hasn't been pushed out yet. The article doesn't even mention 2.2...conspiracy theorists...

Because I picked St. Patrick's Day, months ago, and I'm gonna win that friggin' office pool!

Because up until now, AT&T doesn't have anyway to support/enforece wi-fi tethering (and charge you $$) on Android platform. They are forced to remove such feature on current Android phones even though AT&T does have a tethering plan. Now they can ask Samsung to make such enforcement in the 2.2 ROM with the Mobile HotSpot app/feature as Samsung already did for T-Mo and Rogers.
We know leaked JI6 has untouched wi-fi tethering. Leaked JJ4 has the tethering removed. I'd bet the final release will have the tethering feature back but only works when your account has the tethering plan paid for.
They probably asked Samung to add this feature in the last minute and hence the delay because all the turn around time (AT&T ask for feature->Samung add the feature to a new build of ROM->AT&T needs to retest everything on the new ROM).

"Hotspot" feature

Will it be possible to use the hotspot feature without paying the so called 29.99 fee?
PDAnet will allow you to tether, however it is for one computer only and involves some hokey DUN profiles if I read correctly.
Once Froyo arrives there is hope that Sprint will not disable the in-built WiFi capabilities.
Outside of that slim chance once root access is obtained there will of course be wifi.
sprint will disable wifi tether for froyo, 100% guarantee. wait for root.
Once the Evo is rooted you can just run WiFi Tether for Root Users. This works perfectly on the Sprint Hero.
Thanks... I will wait it out. I am sure it'll be done rather soon after release, shoot there is already a possible root already.
I wouldn't worry about it. I'm probably the cheapest man alive with cell phone bills (I have ATT with unlimited data for 56 <_< apparently I use way over any kind of limit and I was grandfathered in with unlimited) I don't plan on using the30 dollar add on BUT I do plan to use tethering and since the Evo is already rooted and will probably have an easy method of rooting by the time the phone is released I plan on doing that then just updating to froyo when it is released (there are a couple tethering programs out there for rooted phones.)

This is the important question though...
Will Wireless Tether for Root Users funnel just the 3g connection, or will it also use the 4g radio connection? I'd hope the latter, but am skeptical. From an OS standpoint though, I'd think it just sees 4g as another radio connection, so I'm hoping there's some grain of chance that it will work.

I'm sure they will include 4G support, but it might not be until a CDMA specific Froyo build that has WiMax support built in. Right now the EVO's ROM has 4G coded into it, it's not really integrated into the OS.

Wifi Tether/Wireless Tether for Root Users

The only version of wifi/wireless tether for root users that works is the most recent experimental build:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
wifi_tether_v3_0-pre14.apk
From the options menu, you will need to change the device from auto to Samsung Facinate.
This is the only configuration that worked for me. The stability is questionable. I did have to reboot a few times to get wifi working AFTER I turned off wifi-tether.
It did seem to help that I kept wifi on before I started wifi-tether. I don't suggest turning off wifi, then running wifi-tether. Under this scenario, I could not get wifi-tether to work.
YES, I understand I can use the free official version that's built into the phone, BUT I have no intention of seeing a line item of $20 on my wireless bill AFTER the promotion ends next month. VZW might/will just assume you used it once and you got the service until you call to cancel. No thanks with that situation. Going to avoid that like the plague. I would not put it past VZW [insert any phone/cable/cell company] from this dirty little trick.
I have even considered calling VZW to have the promo code taken OFF my account. I just don't trust these companies.
On a side not, I am running ED2 with the voodoov4 kernel.
This method can use the 4G LTE connection for the tethering, right?
I did not do a speed test on the other device, but I am pretty certain it said 4G. I actually would have noticed if it was 3G or 1X because it would have stuck out as my house is covered in 4G love

I'm having a hard time getting this to work with altered beast. Has anyone else found a solution for altered beast wireless tether?
I have this app from my Fascinate and I'm posting this right now on my laptop that is being tethered from 4G from this app. That should clear things up.
I got it working. As a matter of fact, I am tethering at about twice as fast as my previous phone.
I live on a farm where our 3G is spotty, and I'm getting 1.5 Mbps as opposed to 0.6 Mbps previously. I can actually stream stuff now! Very happy.
Try Wired Tethering instead
I can't say much about Wireless Tethering, 'cause I'm really not that interested in it: The battery on the Charge gets drained so fast when downloading 4G data without the WiFi stuff, why add an additional drain?
My philosophy on this is that you're probably going to want to plug your Sammy into something to charge the battery while surfing, so why not plug it into your laptop and go with a Wired Tether instead? It probably will get you faster speeds, to boot.
If you want to try it, I recommend "Easy Tether". (The free Google Code root user "Wired Tether" isn't working right now).
E.T. is a lot cheaper than PDAnet, and personally I think it has a simpler user interface. It doesn't require root access, either. The free version gets you unlimited access to http: sites, but restricts https: sites.
Food for thought.
I use Wireless Tethering 2.0.8, not 3.0.
Been using it since I picked up the phone and rooted it. 2.0.8 works perfectly for me. Ad-hoc not Wireless signal, but still works!
I download a 3gb HD movie in about 15-30 minutes, depending on the speed. That's gotta be LTE 4G speed. I'm pretty sure 1.5mbps cannot download 3gb in that time.
i ran wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre9 on my alteredbeast last night and it worked fine for me. not in a 4g area.
The wireless tether option is the only reason to root in my opinion. Plus its free! When I work overtime details where I just have to sit in the cruiser, wireless tether is the best cause I can watch movies and surf any sites without the city's server blocking me.
I've got a couple rooted Charges..anyone know what wireless tether is the BEST? I know of Barnacle and Wireless Tether...and have used both, neither stands out above or any different really than the other.
I am using barnacle and it is working very well no FCs or issues so far.. just stated a few days ago but i am getting full speed.
my guess is that at some point they will be charging by the usage to stop this practice.. but until then this works great.

The device was launched with the Mobile Hotspot (and Mobile Broadband Connect service) offered at no additional charge to customers for a limited time. Due to a software bug on the Charge, the device has now disabled the Mobile Hotspot. Customers who now try to launch the application will see the screen momentarily change to a black screen, and then return to the menu with the same Mobile Hotspot icon.
Resolution Plan Samsung has found the root cause and has submitted a software upgrade (MR2) to Verizon Wireless. We are currently testing this software and expect to approve it and release to customers as an "over-the-air" upgrade by June 9 end of week. Once the upgrade is installed on the customer's device, the Mobile Hotspot will resume working at no additional charge until the promotional period expires. Isnt verizon plan on suspending accounts that use 3rd party apps to enable tethiering?
I used to use 46GB of data a month with my imagio and nobody ever said a word, and im already up to 16 with the charge (unfortunately still on 3G). If they are supposedely suspending accounts they would have tore me apart by now. I think once 4G gets established nationwide the carriers are probably gonna change there rates on data, but until then im going to keep paying my 30 a month for UNLIMITED data and use as much as i want

I can't even get tethering to work on my laptop (let alone Galaxy Tab 10.1) through the Droid Charge, with either Barnacle nor Wireless Tether. Did you have any luck?
Can anyone report if this is working in infrastructure mode, or is it just ad-hoc?

Cool. Glad theres a fix. My Wifi tether app is annoying me because it only wants to do Ad-Hoc and Xbox and PS3 don't like that.
The current workaround is to set the phone's date/time back to May 31. This was posted on VZWSupport's twitter page, and I verified it last night when I let a friend grab the GB OTA for his DX.
"...until the promotional period expires."
So what, June 15th? We get 6 whole days? I wonder if they're going to "extend" the promotional period because of the troubles, crappy move if not.
Glad I rooted. Time to get rid of that garbage and install something that works (and allows me to use MY device and MY service that I pay for to its full...)
/soapbox
Confirmed. I asked a friend who works for Vzw today
"Work Around There currently is no known workaround for this issue."
I bought my SCH-I510 on Friday and was told the HotSpot function was broken and the Free period would 'likely' be extended.
I found a workaround by using the hotspot widget (at.mysandbox.android.hotspotwidget on market) to turn the hotspot on. I see the hotspot set as 'SCH-I510 abab' (MAC related) and found a web site that mentioned the default hotspot password is the phone number and now I am using the hotspot on my new Samsung Charge SCH-I510.
It's interesting that my second android (Nexus One) is getting 5mb down when the SCH-I510 is getting 11mb down.
Hopefully the fix addresses the crappy handoff between 4g and 3g, as well as spotty 3g-only data connectivity. I can dream, can't I?

I have wifi hot spot after sensation ICS update

first want tto thank everyone for helping me S-off yesterday.
Last night i updated to sensation ICS.
to my surprise i still have wifi hotspot...
i never joined up for it or pay for it...
am i missing something here? i thought everyone lost it when they updated?
dont get me wrong, im glad its here, but im surprised thats all.
If you have a 5 GB or a 10 GB data plan, those are now being advertised with the free mobile hotspot. The plan was previoulsy known as "Classic Unlimited - Premium" It's being shown though as a limited time offer. My guess is (only my guess) they are grandfathering those who already had the Classic Unlimited - Premium / Ultra 5 / 10 GB plans to include tethering / hotspot access. And looking at the pricing, it is pretty much what I am already paying.
There are also reports that after upgrading, people have been able to use it temporarily then all the sudden, they get the "upgrade to hotspot" TMOB paage and are then locked out from further tehter / hotspot usage. TMOB also said that there would be a grace period for some who would still have it and then would later be required to upgrade for continued usage. So you may or may not loose it.
wow interesting.
I believe i will fall into the temp usage and probably have it taken away since i am only on the 2gb plan..
this is good info.. thanks..
In case that ever does start to fail (HOPEFULLY it doesn't), there seems to be a few options out there for providing hotspot from 3rd parties (such as FoxFi on the google market).
I haven't personally used this since I don't particularly need hotspot much myself, but it's good to know there should be other ways around this if necessary.
[Edit] Apparently I spoke a bit too soon. Wifi mode on FoxFi does not work on HTC devices. Bluetooth does however. There may be other options out there as well. There's an app called "Wireless Tether for Root Users" that may work
Yeah my guess is they do "grandfather" you in the plan because I have the 10 GB plan and its included as a "free" service. I called and asked because I DONT want anymore charges on my already too high bill. They assured me it was free for the plan I have. So your correct about it
Being included. I also think its for the 5/10GB plans.I'm not sure about the other plans.

From what I read so far, am good to go.

[DISCUSSION] - Moving Verizon S9+ to T-Mobile

I decided to move from VZW to T-Mo! Woooot!
First I will share my experience with the setup and porting of my new accounts then talk about using a VZW Phone on a T-Mo line. Yeah, I know there are couple of these threads already but they are somewhat old and unmonitored.
The transition went smooth but seemed to take almost 1.5 hours in the T-Mo store! I thought that was kinda excessive! I think the employee that was helping us was new. She didn't know much, couldn't explain anything, and kept going to her manager with every simple question I asked. Its all good, new employees have to learn! So I was fine with that aspect of the switch. It was a Sunday afternoon with nothing else going on.
They moved me from a 24GB Plan on VZW to the T-Mo One Military plan. I then added the $10.00 advanced data package on our phones. Its nice not worrying about overages and NOT paying an arm and leg for the data plan!
So my VZW bill went from about $350 to $150.00 on T-Mo. In all fairness I do have device payments on VZW, but moved those phones to save money. Will pay them off on the final bill. Still pretty happy with this! The device payments accounted for $80.00 of the VZW Bill. So I am still saving about $120.00 a month.
So now onto the service aspect.... Over all T-Mo, in FARGO ND, cant compete with Verizon! Not at all. Oh well, not too worried, I get decent coverage and "fair" data speeds.
At home, T-Mo gets about 10 megs down and 2 megs up. This was about the same speed Verizon had before they upgraded whatever tower was near my house. So, ok, at home, data sucks. No biggie, I have decent home internet package and to be quite frank, I never use my phone when I am home. I have so many gadgets with bigger screens to surf with.
At Work, Both Verizon and T-Mo get the same, 5 to 10 down and 1 to 5 up. Oh well. I can say that T-Mo is more reliable in this specific building for data when you are near a window, which I am. However, when you go into the building, where there are no Windows, T-Mo drops its data pretty low. We are talking about EDGE data. Verizon speeds would drop but not as drastic as the T-Mo. All in all I would say at work everything is equal.
Have not been around town much but when driving to work today I was using speedtest.net along the way. In general, Verizon beets T-Mo all the way from home to work.
So, now that I am a T-Mo customer with a Verizon phone I realized that there was going to be a minor learning curve. I cant get Advanced Calling features such as WiFi Calling, HD Calling, and Simultaneous Talk and Text! I knew something like what would happen because of difference in carrier implementation of those services. No biggie there. I understand that I would only need to flash the USERDATA partition to transform my VZW to a T-Mo s9+. Can anyone confirm that?
Also, I heard that the latest T-Mo update is hosed and not being pushed to the phone. I am currently on Verizon build ARE6 Dated Mid May 2018. I am not sure of the boot loader versions but I am thinking I should be able to go back one build on the T-Mo build and flash it. Hopefully. Anyone know about this?
Right now, I am at work, and I was wondering, was anyone able to turn on the advanced calling on Verizon Firmware without flashing USERDSATA? Also, those of you that made this switch with this phone, did you flash the T-Mo USERDATA? I was actually thinking about flashing the International Snap Dragon or the US Unbranded Snapdragon ROM on this phone instead of T-Mo. Did anyone do that? What sort of drawbacks did you have?

Woot! My jouney is complete!

Hey, I'm planning to do the same you did in the next few weeks.
I'm a bit lost on what to do (first samsung phone ever), could you go trough the steps you performed?
Did you had to change the CSC at all?
Thanks!

Wow! Thats crazy good. WE dont have Comcast here and I can assure that CableOne and Midcontitennt cable will not be offering cell service anytime soon! Hell, we barely have a decent selection of HD channels. The big cable company doesnt even have Comedy Central.
I live in Fargo man. We dont have options. We just take what we can get, lol

I don't use cable (other than their internet). I get all my shows off torrents. My relative does have cable and does have 3 televisions, I just don't use it.

No, I did not do a CSC change. I only flashed the U1 firmware linked in the prior post.
I let it factory reset, the phone booted, told me it needed to reboot to adjust features for the SIM and then it came back up a second time. Walked through set up and everything worked fine.
If you are new to Samsung then you need to get familiar with an app for your PC called Odin. Its the too that is used to flash factory firmware to Samsung devices. There are tons of tutorials on how to use Odin so I wont bother with a walk through.
And one last follow up.
I have now flashed the T-MO ARF4 update and have ALL the T-Mobile Features. When I call I get the "HD+" icon now.
